What is the native program OSX load to edit the screenshots? Posted: 26 Mar 2021 12:15 AM PDT When creating a screenshot with Cmd+Shift+3 or Cmd+Shift+4, a smaller version of the screenshot image appears at the corner of the screen. When clicking the image, the full-sized screenshot image pop on the screen in an annotation kind of app. This app allows to draw, circle or outlines and it will interpolate the drawing to the closest geometrical shape. What is this app? Is there any way to load any image through it instead of Preview? |

CPU and RAM usage statistics for iPhone/iOS (similar to Activity Monitor)? Posted: 25 Mar 2021 08:54 PM PDT Is there any (preferably free) way to view CPU and RAM usage by process (e.g. app) on iPhone without jailbreaking the device? Activity Monitor on macOS displays
and some other CPU statistics, as well as these RAM statistics:
It would be great to know how to view similar statistics on iPhone. |
Macbook is freezing and restarting again and again Posted: 25 Mar 2021 08:17 PM PDT I am using a Macbook Pro 16 inch 2019 with macOS Big Sur version 11.2.3. My macbook randomly freezes mid screen and I can't move the cursor. Then it restarts all by itself with a whirring sound(probably made by the fans). It is very irritating as I have bought the laptop quite recently, hasn't downloaded any kind of malicious softwares and the storage left is also pretty decent. I can't understand the reason it freezes arbitrarily. Can someone please help me with this issue? |
How to copy text in Preview in password protected PDF Posted: 25 Mar 2021 07:53 PM PDT According to this question preview previously didn't care about password protection on pdfs. Now in big sur I'm finding pdfs fairly often that don't allow me to copy text unless I have a password. Is there a way to prevent preview from doing this or do I need to find a different pdf reader? It's incredibly frustrating to have to re-type text from a pdf if I want to google something I just read. |
Applescript to find application path from partial app name? Posted: 25 Mar 2021 10:20 PM PDT How do I get the path to a running application using part of the app name. (eg. 'Acrobat' in 'Adobe Acrobat Reader DC') This is what I tried but it's incorrect. (Note: Not sure if it changes if multiple instances are running, but I only want a single POSIX path returned) |

Facetime overloading my computer's scheduler Posted: 25 Mar 2021 06:05 PM PDT Running Mac OSX High Sierra 10.13.6. Many times when I'm on a facetime call, and when doing other video things, my whole computer gets hangy about 15 minutes in. I'll throw in specs on my machine: Model Name: MacBook Pro Model Identifier: MacBookPro9,2 Processor Name: Intel Core i7 Processor Speed: 2.9 GHz Number of Processors: 1 Total Number of Cores: 2 L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB L3 Cache: 4 MB Memory: 8 GB Boot ROM Version: 230.0.0.0.0 SMC Version (system): 2.2f44 Sudden Motion Sensor: State: Enabled I'm trying to pinpoint what the holdup is, since in the past it was able to do facetime well. Looked at it in Activity Monitor, but couldn't find any one culprit. I copied the console logs from that hour, and I'll look through it for more info. Just wanted to get the question started. |
How do I prevent iOS device from going out of low power mode? [duplicate] Posted: 25 Mar 2021 04:21 PM PDT If my iOS device is in low power mode and I am charging it then at a certain percentage iOS automatically turns off low power mode (and it always tells me) but I'd like to keep low powered mode on all the time. How do I prevent iOS from turning off low power mode all the time? Note: This is the opposite of a similar question I asked a while back. I never want the phone to go to the " lower power mode" even if the phone battery drops to 10 % . |
windows 10 - I have the "Create a Windows 7 or 8 version install disk" but there's a problem Posted: 25 Mar 2021 03:56 PM PDT I followed instructions in this video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gh667JSvymU showing me how to install Windows on my Mac and showed me how to get the "Create a Windows 7 or 8 version install disk" option. But, when I check it and continue in Bootcamp, it's showing me "There is no USB drive connected to the system. Please insert a USB drive to continue". I don't have a USB Drive and I already have the ISO image thing installed on my Mac. Here is what it shows: Beneath the option "Create a Windows 7 or 8 version install disk", it says that I can use the ISO image downloaded from Microsoft but it always says that I need a USB drive. Can someone help me, I have been watching videos and researching on google for an hour but I cant find anything. |
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 04:14 PM PDT I have a refurbished 2015 MacBook Pro 13", Intel i7 Processor, 16GB RAM and 512 SSD. When I first began using it I noticed it got unusually hot rather often, and so I downloaded Macs Fan Control to keep tabs on it. But whenever I do anything remotely resource intensive, for example playing music or using a virtual environment or using Xcode or VSCode, the CPU gets to temperatures over 100 degrees celsius. This is concerning and I believe it may have made the computer reboot a time or two, though that may have been something else. I am able to control it by keeping tabs on it but it is rather annoying and very worrying that the temperature gets that high. Are there any reasons why it does this? |
iOS 14.4.1 upgrading many (but not all) apps, re-downloading old ones; why? Posted: 25 Mar 2021 03:06 PM PDT I just upgraded from iOS 14.4(?) to iOS 14.4.1 on my iPhone 8 and I'm somewhat in a state of shock because it seems very many of my apps are being re-downloaded.
What the hell happened there? Why are my apps redownloaded/upgraded/re-installed although I had removed them? And importantly: Is there any risk that my previous versions are lost? Very unfortunately app developers decide to just remove features and very badly Apple does not support app downgraded so I want to make sure that I can keep current versions of certain apps. |
How do I move mp4 files from fotos to files on an ipad Posted: 25 Mar 2021 02:42 PM PDT I airdropped 3 movies from my laptop to the ipad. Since they were mp4's they ended up in fotos, but I'd rather watch them with VLC. How do I get these files "moved" from fotos to files so that VLC can deal with them. I've been working with .avi files up until now so it hasn't been a problem, but evidently fotos is claiming the mp4s and not even giving me a way to control where they go. |
Problems with Varmilo VA88M keyboard, seems to switch to ANSI layout Posted: 25 Mar 2021 05:23 PM PDT I have, since some 2 months, a VA88M Varmilo keyboard (and am very happy with it), a ISO Nordic keyboard layout. |
Apple Configurator 2 and Automator "File not found at specified location" Posted: 25 Mar 2021 02:01 PM PDT I am looking for help using Automator to enroll a device into an mdm with Apple Configurator 2, My OS is 11.1 Big Sur, whenever I get to the point where the device is getting prepared, I get an error message saying the certificate is not being found in the specified location. But I am getting that .crt file from my desktop, using the other option, how is Automator not finding the file? When I use the call " Get Specified Finder Items" that Automator action finds that fill just fine. Does anyone here have any experience using Automator and Apple Configurator together? I tried everything I found at https://configautomation.com/ but I am suspicious that the latest versions Mac OS no longer support Apple Configurator Automator actions but I have found no proof one way or another throughout all the various forums for Automator content |
Where does Xcode install if macOS is installed on an external drive? Posted: 25 Mar 2021 01:55 PM PDT Normally Xcode can only be installed on the internal drive. Use OSX Mail from Panther (10.3) with iCloud email address Posted: 25 Mar 2021 01:32 PM PDT I'd like to use OSX Mail from Panther (10.3) with an iCloud email address. When I punch in the valid iCloud account info and server ids, both smtp.mail.me.com and imap.mail.me.com servers fail to connect. I saw a reference to app-specific passwords some Apple docs, but I couldn't get that to work. What am I missing? Thanks! |
Posted: 25 Mar 2021 02:37 PM PDT I just purchased 64GB of RAM that's compatible with my 2018 Mac mini, but in no way shape or form do I trust myself enough to make the installation myself. I called my local Apple Store to see if they could do it for me, and they said they couldn't do it with third-party RAM for warranty reasons. Does anyone know of a place that could make the installation for me such as a place like Best Buy perhaps? Not really sure who does this type of stuff by I would definitely prefer to have a professional do it instead of risking messing something up on my own. |
Automator keeps crashing after one iteration of a loop Posted: 25 Mar 2021 11:44 AM PDT I'm using Automator with a for loop to click (cliclick) on some icon and buttons, run nodejs, click on some icon and buttons again and loop. First iteration works fine. However Automator crashes after that with "EXC_BAD_ACCESS" Able to loop the workflow if I try it with a basic nodejs file with "console.log("test Automator Loop"). The complex one using axios to call a web API. How to solve EXC_BAD_ACCESS? |
How do I use all four cameras of the iPhone 12 in WhatsApp? Posted: 25 Mar 2021 01:56 PM PDT The iPhone 12 has four cameras; the front camera, a general use one on the back, a wide angle one and a zoom camera. During video chats placed with the WhatsApp app, only the front camera and the general use one of the back can be accessed. It is therefore very difficult to show certain things during a call that would require the wide angle or zoom cameras. Can I use all 4 cameras of the iPhone 12 in WhatsApp, and how? Or is there an app for video chat that supports them all? |
How to always allow any app to do anything / disable Security & Privacy authorization dialogues Posted: 25 Mar 2021 06:05 PM PDT Currently on macOS Catalina. I work in sound design and audio development. I use several Automator-scripts and other workflow applications to control various stuff, and for every new project or when I make any change in any AppleScript, I get a nagging dialogue to "Allow for Keystrokes", "Allow for Accessibility", etc. Sometimes I have to re-authorize all my automator scripts after changing a single line in one of them. This is killing my workflow, and this was implemented in macOS Mojave and forward with the new Privacy and Integrity-routines. On High Sierra this was never a problem, which was the system I used before. I need to disable this permanently. I want any app to make any change it want. I know the risks, but I don't care. It is not a problem for me running an isolated systems with absolute control over all apps I use. I never install anything new, it's an audio workstation with bare minimum applications installed. I've tried Disabling SIP, didn't help. Adding an application to "Full disk access" still makes me have to authorized it in all other fields. Sometimes, when I use application A to control application B, if doing changes in App A, the option to again authorize it to control B never shows up, and is not available. Question is: Does anyone know how I can globally disable the Security & Privacy check in macOS Catalina so that any application I start can control/do whatever it want? If there's no "official" setting, is there no way to hack the underlying preferences or similar? macOS should have a power user mode. |
MacBook Pro has kernel panic same time every time Posted: 25 Mar 2021 05:06 PM PDT I purchased a second hand MacBook Pro 2015 and installed High Sierra on it and upgraded the SSD. Every day between 5-6pm it has a kernel panic and restarts. Any idea what might be behind this? I can't identify an activity trigger and its been happening daily for about 6 months. |
Apple Developer Pay Out Currency Posted: 25 Mar 2021 07:08 PM PDT When selling an app or in app purchases in the Apple App Store and having customers paying in USD, EUR, GBP etc, does Apple do the conversion and then pay you in your native currency i.e. for me £GBP as I am based in the UK or do they just pay out in $USD? Can you select which currency you wish to be paid out in, or can you connect multiple bank accounts to be paid out in each currency? |
Apple Health draining battery following iOS 14 update Posted: 25 Mar 2021 02:03 PM PDT Since updating to iOS 14 (now 14.0.1) Health is draining my battery even though I don't use it much. For example, just one minute of use results in 37% of battery use and I need to recharge 2-4 times (iPhone XS) to get through a day, rendering my phone pretty much useless. What causes this and how do I fix it. Is it another bug with iOS 14? |
Creating a Windows 10 Install USB when FAT32 has 4GB max file size Posted: 25 Mar 2021 04:11 PM PDT So I am attempting to create a Windows 10 install USB on my MBP running macOS 10.14 Mojave. To create a bootable USB it needs to be formatted into FAT32, not exFAT. The issue is that when copying the Is there any solution to this problem, or should I just burn a DVD with the installer on it? EDIT: I forgot to specify that I was creating a USB for a PC, not a Mac. The Mac was just being used to create an install USB. |
How can I change default font Notes - Sierra, High Sierra Posted: 25 Mar 2021 04:47 PM PDT In the actual Notes application there are menu choices for changing the font of a note. However, this doesn't change the default font for new notes. There is also no Preference.../Settings... where the default font can be changed. Does anyone know how to change the default font of the Notes app on MacOS Sierra and/or High Sierra etc. |
merge folder trees on OSX by moving, not copying them Posted: 25 Mar 2021 01:05 PM PDT It's backup time, and I've been trying to merge two big directory trees on the same (physical) partition, with lots levels of depth. The first one is the base containing all my projects up to 2014, and the other one is only a partial one containing the "changes" that have happened over the last few years (2014-16). New projects, and revisited ones. In other words, mostly directories or files that have been added/modified exist in this new tree. There are a few files that only by accident ended up having the same name (but in essence are different, and not from the same original) and a few untouched files here and there (mostly files in projects that were revisited, updated, but not in every single aspect). Now I wish to consolidate all the changes in one big base tree so I can put it in my drawer. In the past I used to work with arRsync but it makes actual copies of the files; and at this point I don't have the space (or time) to spare for all the files to be duplicated. It needs to be done by moving the files. I've tried rsync, ditto, and the Finder on Sierra (with the alt key pressed), but all of them end up actually duplicating the files! Not sure if I missed something, but since I'm a bit stuck and afraid to mess up I thought of asking here for help! Anybody who could point me to a safe direction on how to merge these trees without copying but moving the folders/files? PS. I don't mind if the files with the same name get overwritten unintelligently - as long as no folder gets replaced, and all unique files come together it is good for me. The files that have the same name on both trees, are few and can be easily recovered. However it would be nice if the answer made mention on how to perform intelligently these overwrites for the sake of completeness (and future reference) |
Any way to change sound output device via Applescript or shell? How do I create a link on the iPad home screen to a specific pdf? Posted: 26 Mar 2021 12:21 AM PDT I would like to be able to create a link on my iPad's home screen that will open up a specific PDF either in iBooks or some other app. I need to be able to access the PDF even when Internet access in not available. My iPad is used by my 3-year-old son. I want to make it just as easy for him to open up the (non-DRM) PDF picture books we have as it is to open up a random app such as Elmo ABCs. Right now, in order to open his picture books, he has to go to iBooks and then open up the picture books. It sounds like a small step but it isn't for him. I've tried accessing the PDF from Safari and then choosing the "Add to Home Screen" option. It does put an icon on the home screen but when clicked, it tries to open up the original site the PDF came from. As a result, this isn't a good solution unless there is a way to cache the PDF locally. I've looked in iBooks for some way to do this but nothing obvious is jumping out at me. |
