Problem after installing ubuntu on dual-boot macbook

Appologize that the explanation will be lengthy. I really did a lot of stupid things, and I don't know much about how to handle computer-related problems...

While installing Ubuntu on my macbook pro 2015, which already has windows and macOS installed, I made a huge mistake by selecting the "install alongside windows" option. As a result, I can no longer boot into macOS or windows. With the successfully installed Ubuntu, I can still see and edit my files from the windows partition, but not the mac partition (in fact, it nows shows as a "110 GB volume", see tge image below) which contains the most important files for me. Since I stupidly did not make any backups, rebooting into macOS or somehow extract the files in this particular partition is now my top priority. enter image description here

Here are what I have tried.

First, upon inputing the command diskutil list in terminal under internet recovery mode, I discovered that the partition type for my disk0s1 had turned into FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF.

Then I followed @klanomath's instructions on Data Not Backed Up, Partition Type: FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF to cope with the problem, but wasn't successful.

here is what was returned after inputing dd if=/dev/disk0s2 count=3 | vis -c:

so I thought this should be from a standard OS X partition, and edited the parition type of disk0s2 accordingly. Meanwhile, I also fixed the MBR problem according to @klanomath's instructions from How to fix broken GPT, GUID and unmountable, no type volumes?.

After all these, the command diskutil list returns:

At this point, there still seems to be a problem with disk0s2, as its type name is "Apple_HFS". This was further supported by what was return after inouting diskutil verifyDisk disk0:

Also, an error was raised for diskutil verifyVolume disk0s1:

Make text follow a line and remain upright-ish for line directon in Omnigraffle

In https://discourse.omnigroup.com/t/how-can-i-get-a-line-label-to-follow-the-line/32925 there's a neat "follow path" feature. That's great for lines that go straight down, or rightwards and downward. But what of lines that go leftwards and downwards? The "follow path" directive for the text makes the text upside down. I wish there was a follow-path with an additional "never upside down" feature, so I could move my boxes around at full speed without line legends causing me regret.

Mail SMTP server list discrepancy

When I'm in Accounts and I select the dropdown of SMTP servers I get a long list of servers (as I manage a lot of accounts). But when I go to edit the SMTP server list, not all of the accounts in the dropdown are listed. Any ideas what's happening?

du reports subdirectory sizes which add up to more than the total disk size

My total physical drive space is 256GB and i am not connected to any remote storage.

When i run du -sxh ./* 2>/dev/null in zsh shell on macOS Big Sur 11.2.3, i get the following results:

39G ./Applications
2.8G ./Library
209G ./System
131G ./Users
2.8G ./private
5.0G ./usr ...(rest of the output is omitted)
total is at around 389GB

So my question is then, why does the the output add put to more than 1.5 of my total physical storage capacity?

In my research on this problem i was primarily relying on this answer. My question is very similar to this one, however 1) there was no response 2) comments there suggested that this is due to hard linked files, which i have supposedly excluded with -x argument

I tried the below things.

sudo su  csrutil clear  reboot

Uninstalling and then re-installing Virtual Box multiple times. I did not receive any permission request to enable the blocked loading extensions in System preferences-->security.

csrutil enable   reboot

I tried on a Mac intel chip 2017 and it runs perfectly fine. Not sure what to change for the M1 chip here.

Automatically close non-responsive app

How can I automatically close an application that is listed as Not Responding in Activity Monitor?

I have one application in particular that I'd like to be killed if it goes non-responsive. I'm thinking I could schedule a script with cron, but I'm not sure what the script would need to be.

Is there a way to copy the album art from an MP3 in the new MacOS Music app?

I bought an M1 Mac and it has the new Music app instead of iTunes. I was organizing some MP3 into folders and decided to use some common "covert art" graphics as custom folder icons.

I know how to paste a graphic into a folder icon. But I couldn't find a way to copy it from the MP3. In fact when I bring up the Info dialog for an MP3 that has cover art, the Info dialog doesn't show it, even though the Music app does.

Anyway I couldn't find a way to get the image into the clipboard from Finder, Music, or even VLC. Is there a way? Googling leads me to believe that it could be done on the old iTunes.

Is there a way to detect when the fn lock key is depressed?

With my Logitech ERGO K860 keyboard I use both F keys and media keys. When I am ready to press an F key I would like to know whether I will get F-key output or media-key output. The Caps lock key has a light that is enabled when that key is depressed, but not the fn lock key. Caps Wizard app also can detect and indicate when Caps lock is depressed. The author of Caps Wizard told me he might be willing to add an indicator for fn lock but he doesn't think that key sends a modifier code such as the ones he currently uses.

MacBook Air battery discrepancy (charged vs shown)

I have recently upgraded from a MacBook Air (2020 Intel Chip) to a MacBook Air with the new M1 Chip (16 gb ram) and I have noticed something that would not happen with my previous Mac. Today, I charged my new laptop from a 35% battery level to 89%. When I unplugged it from charge, there was an issue connecting to my hotspot so I restarted it. As soon as I logged in, I noticed that the battery level jumped to 93%, a 4% increase. It dropped from 93% to 92% in a couple of minutes, but then performed as usual. I want to add that the battery is fairly new, with a maximum capacity of 100% and 5 cycles. I am not sure if this is normal, or if anyone has encountered this "possible issue".

AirPods: Does the H1 chip use a proprietary bluetooth profile?

The AirPods don't seem to use HFP (only 16Khz) nor A2DP (output only) when talking with Apple hardware (iPhone, Mac Book). I noticed that when calling in Discord or Skype on my iPhone the audio quality remains surprisingly good, which seems to be impossible with the standard profiles AFAICT. It's clear to me that they need some sort of protocol for controlling the AirPods ANC settings (etc), but I wonder if that same protocol is used for audio transmission?

What does it mean that an SMB-server explicitly supports Time Machine?

What does it mean that an SMB-server explicitly supports Time Machine? E.g., on my NAS I can enable SMB and then I can also enable support for Time Machine. OTOH, there are routers that supports filesharing via SMB but does not support Time Machine.

What does this mean? Does Time Machine require an SMB-server to support some extension of the SMB protocol (or something like that) that not all SMB servers includes?

I have seen some more advanced AppleScript users mention efficiency of their AppleScripts in terms of execution time.

Is there an AppleScript method for getting the execution time?

I know there is time when calling do shell script. I have this working in a loop:

Open Zoom meeting email link (URL) on iPad Air

I am not a regular iPad user. On Windows I can open a Zoom meeting directly from the link I receive with the invitation email. I just click on that link, the Browser opens and Zoom starts connected with that meeting.

How do I accomplish the same on an iPad? What happened in my case was that the Zoom App opened, but was NOT connected to that particular meeting. I had to manually copy/paste the id/password parts to get connected.

How can I directly open a Zoom meeting from the invitation email on iPad?

I wanted to have a backup of my iCloud notes

I know iCloud is already supposed to be a backup, but I have heard of people having problems or notes being deleted out of nowhere, so that's why I wanted another kind of backup

That could sync to iCloud so I could keep my notes on iCloud, plus somewhere else

Does such a thing exist ?

kernel_task taking too much CPU despite low CPU temperatures

I have a MacBook Air 2013, which randomly started having issues with the fan speed shooting up (from booting and no applications running) and just completely slowing down. Apple said it was a problem with the SMC controller and logic board. I have reset the SMC 10 times and wiped the laptop. Finally, I have downloaded TG Pro which has solved the fan issue but the Kernel task is still eating up CPU even though the CPU temp is around 45 degrees. Any clues?

CPU PECI 46 degrees.

Activity Monitor: kernel_task 258.1% CPU

How to move Preview window to other desktop in MacOS?

I know how to do this with regular application windows, you just drag the window to the edge of the screen until it moves to the next desktop.

This does not work with the Preview window.

How can I disable or enable keyboard input source?

I am using macOS Catalina v10.15.7. I am using Control+Space to select text in emacs. In order to achieve I am deselecting Select the previous input source and Select the next source Input menu.

=> Settings => Keyboard => Shortcuts => Input Sources  [ ] Select the previous input source  # deselected  [ ] Select next source in input menu  # deseleced

So when I press Contol+Space not it does not open open Input Source window.

In some cases I believe if macOS crashed or if I force macOS to shutdown by pressing the power button, after opening macOS and when I press control+space it is bound to Input Source even if (Select the previous input source Select next source in input menu) are deselected under the setting.

Is it possible to change input sources's setting using a script in startup as

  • First select Select the previous input source and Select next source in input menu

  • Then deselect Select the previous input source and *Select next source in input menu

How to run a Shortcut from a web page in iOS

I am trying to use the Shortcuts feature of iOS.

I want to run some simple JavaScript on a web page.

I made a new Shortcut, added "Run JavaScript on Web Page".

The contents of the JavaScript are

alert("hello world");  completion();

I named the shortcut "do hello world".

Now how do I trigger this to run on a web page?

I've googled and it seems that I should be able to click on the "export" button in Safari and run the shortcut from the panel that appears, but I do not see my shortcut in that list.

Buzzing sound through MBA earphones while charging

I have got a MBA M1 base variant and am in India with 220 V @ 50 Hz power supply. Currently, my MBA is plugged in (and 100% charged) and through my earphones I am hearing a buzzing sound. If I turn off the power then the sound vanishes.

More interestingly though, if I touch my hand to any area on the metal surface the sound vanishes. Likewise, if the power is plugged-in and I drag my hand through any area of the metal surface then there is a distinctive vibration I can feel which is absent when my hand is resting.

Is this normal behaviour? Is there any chance of damage of any kind? Could this be a grounding issue? I'm pretty sure that the power is grounded (but not 100% sure).

Edit : Additional Comment -

In case it's relevant I bought the MacBook through official online store of Apple so no chance of a run-in with power rating issues. Also, the power supply at my place is rock-steady.

AirDrop no-response from MacBook to iPhone

MacBook Air M1 2020 + iPhone12 Pro Max

AirDrop from iPhone to MacBook works well.

Handoff in both directions works well. (Although I didn't know whether they were acting in similar ways)

The only problem is that when I want to airdrop a file from MacBook to iPhone, I can see my iPhone's figure, however with no-clicking-response neither in Mac nor in iPhone.

I tried to toggle the bluetooth and WiFi in both devices but the issue still exists. I tried to restart both devices but the issue still exists.

How can I have a key pressed at a specific time?

I want to press a certain key (e.g. 'p') in a certain time (e.g. at 00:00), how can I accomplish this? I'm aware of Can a Mac be programmed to simulate pressing a key at a certain rate via software? but this doesn't include a timer of any kind.

I want to mirror from my iPhone 7+, to an Aucary projector , displaying to a wall. What adapters, or cables do I need ? I haven't been able to connect wirelessly ( Phone showing no wireless connection ) , and I don't have anything to plug hdmi cord into , with 1 end in projector... What are my choices ???! Why will my MacBook Pro (15" Late 2016) not power on after disabling 'Boot on Lid Open'?

I wanted to disable the boot/power on by opening the lid. To do so, I entered the below command in the terminal

sudo nvram AutoBoot=%03

Post that, I shut down the laptop by going to the Top Left Apple icon. After shut down, I closed the lid. I opened the lid and Voila, it showed the battery indicator 100% on the screen and then the screen went dark. Reasonable, but not for me. This is where my problem starts, as my laptop won't start anymore.

I have taken the below troubleshooting steps.

  • Press the Power Button
  • Press and Hold the Power Button from 3-10 seconds, (tried all)
  • Tried resetting NVRAM
  • Tried resetting the SMC, ^ Control ⇧ Shift ⌥ Option ⦿ Power for 10 seconds.
    ( I am not sure about SMC reset, as the power was not turning on)
  • Opened the back lid, disconnected battery connectors for 60 hrs, hoping SMC would reset. Plugged in the charger, and opened the lid, it showed no battery in red on the screen. No power on until now
  • Removed the charger, connected the battery, opened the lid and we are back to square one. It shows the battery percentage and the screen goes dark.

I am looking for solutions to start the laptop. I don't know what I have done wrong, a simple command to disable the boot on by opening the lid and I am stuck with my MacBook Pro not starting.

PS: Apple Service Centre are closed, as we are still in lockdown. I am posting a question after a long time, apologies for any improper format.

I deleted Macintosh HD - Data and now the computer won't boot even in Recovery Mode

Okay all, I think I messed up really big time.

Was so excited and delighted today to see my brand spanking new MacBook Air arrive (running Catalina). Everything was wokring great; I started Migration Assistant to get it migrating over from my old computer and, after a little while for the preliminaries, it said it was going to be 6.5 hours. So I thought let's not do this right now, so I can still use the old computer, and cancelled it.

That was my first mistake.

It wouldn't let me go back to the original state of Migration Assistant; the users were already on the new computer. Okay, fine, I have to go into Utilities to find Migration Assistant on the new computer. But then when Migration Assistant did start up again, it would keep freezing in the early stages, stalled and not progressing - never even got to the part where it estimated time remaining. It did this in multiple ways, whether I was connected through WiFi or Ethernet, direct from the old Mac or through my Time Capsule.

So I figured I wanted to start clean. And this appears to be where I made the REALLY big mistake. I thought "well, I'll just wipe the data so I can start clean, right?" I tried to followed instructions for a factory reset: went into Recovery Mode (cmd-R), entered Disk Utility, deleted the Macintosh HD-Data partition. I thought that what I was supposed to do next was delete the Macintosh HD partition too. But it wouldn't let me do that because it was in use. I also tried to reinstall the US, and it wouldn't let me do that either (also because it was in use). Okay, I thought, I'll just restart and see what happens.

And now my brand new $1800 computer is completely bricked.

The Apple logo appears, followed briefly by the start of the progress bar - and then I hear this whooshing sound, like ocean surf or a heavy breath, and it turns back off again... and then the Apple logo appears again and the same thing happened. Over and over on an endless cycle, just Apple and whoosh. I can sometimes get it to turn off by holding the power button, but turning it back on just gives me the endless cycle and whooshing again; I can't get into Recovery mode. In the old days I would have tried sticking a paper clip in or some other option for a hard reboot, but there's nowhere to do that.

Help! How can I get back to a brand-new computer with the old data smoothly migrated?

How to copy pdf file to Books using File manager?

I have many pdf books in iCloud, now I wanna read it with Books application, according to https://support.apple.com/en-qa/HT205751, It said can Tap the share button and Tap copy to Books. But When I using Files to share the pdf file, there is only Open in Books avaliable, there is no Copy to Books avaliable:enter image description here

Screen on Max Brightness Appears Slightly Dim After Sleeping, MacBook Pro 2015

The issue: Screen appears about 2-3 dots dimmer on max brightness after waking from sleep for more than 30 minutes. I only noticed this a few months after upgrading to Catalina, it's been ongoing ever since.

My settings: No auto-adjusted brightness, disabled screen temperature modifiers like NightShift/Flux, slightly higher gamma color profile for better contrast/brightness (it looks a bit faded otherwise).

My computer: MacBook Pro 13" early 2015 mid-tier model with Catalina 10.15.4. (bought in 2017 used, no repairs or hardware issues the whole year. Great battery cycle life).

My Temporary solution: Resetting the PRAM (cmd + opt + P + R). This fix lasts until I close my laptop and let it sleep overnight usually. Sometimes I've had success reducing the brightness before putting it to sleep. I am not completely sure if this is hardware or software related.

Edit: There have been rare/infrequent occasions when my display would do weird things after waking from sleep. There was one incident of my display completely blanking out with a white pixelated screen for a moment (like an old static TV out of tune). A few other incidents where the display blinks black or totally freezes. It was at first a problem with video playback and hardware acceleration, but now I am beginning to believe it may be a hardware-related problem (though this Mac doesn't have a graphics card).

I use YouTube premium to watch videos offline on my iPad (iPadOS 13). Where can I see the size of a video on the YouTube application?

I don't see any details when going to General -> Storage -> YouTube

Enable "stats for nerds" in account (icon) > settings > toggle "stats for nerds". Then when playing a video, tap "more", select "stats for nerds".

However, stats for nerds don't show the video size:
