| Some Application keeps creating folders Posted: 28 Mar 2021 11:38 PM PDT I opened a write-protected and locked PDF-file with the preview-app. Originally it was located within a folder at the desktop. Afterwards, I moved the file within its folder to a different location. After some time, the containing folder reappeared at the desktop but without any content in it. It has been some days since then and I rebooted several times. The folder just keeps reappearing. I delete it, it somehow gets recreated by some application after some minutes. I even unlocked the PDF-file, moved it back and forth. I also deleted the folder with sudo in the terminal. It says that "staff" is the owner. But it keeps reapperaring. What could I do? Can I see why the folder was created?  |

However when opening a markdown file on a local git clone the Markdown editor does not activate:
Am I missing something here? I am on catalina using the latest _chrome Version 89.0.4389.90 (Official Build) (x86_64)  |
| What happens if you do not listen to an audio message an iPhone? Posted: 28 Mar 2021 08:27 PM PDT I do not want to open an audio message that was sent to me via iMessage. How do I get it to go away without deleting the whole conversation? Sidenote… I do not have my read receipts on, so if I open the conversation but do not listen to the audio message, can i delete it without being noticed by the sender?  |

I have spaces enabled and for some reason, the mission control won't work. I have tried the "killall Dock" in the terminal but that doesn't work. Please help!  |
| How to disable SMS for two factor authentication? Posted: 28 Mar 2021 08:07 PM PDT Apple will use SMS as a fallback for two factor auth, if an authorized device is not available. Given that SMS security is a dumpster fire, this seems unwise, and I'd like to disable the feature. However, I'd still like to have a fallback if an authorized Apple device isn't available for 2FA. You'd think that's what a recovery code would be for, but I can't seem to find a path to access my Apple ID by using my recovery code instead of an authorized device.  |
| What does this icon in available wifi mean? [duplicate] Posted: 28 Mar 2021 06:09 PM PDT I just stumbled across something I never saw before. When clicking on the the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar at the top right of my screen, every available network has this "Wi-Fi icon" except one which has another icon and a "[?]" displayed as name, can someone explain what this is ? I'm running macOS Sierra on a MacBook (8,1).

| Posted: 28 Mar 2021 03:33 PM PDT For a few updates of iOS (os 14.x) I can't receive popups from Shortcuts app. Another notifications show correctly (notices in Notification Centre, text prompt, lists, etc.) Alerts from other apps are working correctly. I don't have any toggle in settings to change notification permissions for shortcuts app. I have this bug on JB iPad ,currently I'm on iOS 14.4.1 (beta i think but installed without touching PC) if smth (but didn't yet modified shortcuts app). Someone know how to fix? Every trick allowed. :)  |

| iPadOS 14 external keyboard arrow keys issues Posted: 28 Mar 2021 10:02 PM PDT I recently purchased a Logitech K380 keyboard for my iPad, running iPadOS 14.4. It's awesome, but I have one issue. When I use the arrow keys, it doesn't let me navigate text with the arrow keys. For example, when I enter text on the search bar, I press the arrow key to go back a letter to edit, and it just swipes. Is there a way to change this so I can navigate through text with a hardware keyboard's arrow keys?  |
| macOS BigSur keep booting from external backup disk (made with CCC) Posted: 28 Mar 2021 07:02 PM PDT My Mac is on BigSur and I am using Carbon Copy Cloner to create a one on one disk which is bootable also. I have this setup running for years now and never noticed any problems – also on BigSur it worked. Now my Backup Drive crashed and I bought a new HDD. I have exactly build this HDD (one 1 TB partition for CCC for the one on one copy and another 1 TB partition for TimeMachine). But two major problems: The clone partition is the one that get booted after a restart – I also cannot choose another startup disk from system preferences since I only can see the actual booted one. So when I had booted with system SSD only this disk is shown and when I booted from the backup disk only this ons is shown. But the mac should boot from the internal disk by default, what could happened here? The Drive was always plugged in in a Thunderbolt 3 Dock. I also recently switched to an eGPU (Razer Core X Chroma) which now operates as my dock where the HDD is attached. But I think the problem occurred since the new replacement disk. Also when I plug in that drive directly on my macbook this drive get booted on restart. Another issue is that the TimeMachine partition of the disk get mountet sporadically and is making intense work but not running a time machine backup. I tried to disable the volume on spotlight which presents an error (time machine backup cannot be excluded since they are always excluded – something like that) but disabled it by command line with Maybe you have an idea. Thanks! -- Update The regular automatic TimeMachine backup is disabled – I have an own task that runs every hour that mounts the volume, do the TM backup and unmount it. That also worked for years now.  |

I have changed the default icon in the Launchpad, but the main icon, Siri.icns found in ~/Appications/Siri.app/Contents/Resources, has not been changed. Help would be much appreciated. | Can a USB-C to mini DisplayPort cable be used with USB-C to Thunderbolt ports? Posted: 28 Mar 2021 03:05 PM PDT I have the above cable for my current set up of sending display from my PC laptop with a USB-C port to my 2010 iMac with a mini DisplayPort port. It works great. I have now bought a mid-2011 iMac that does not have a mDP port. It has a Thunderbolt port. Which I guess is Thunderbolt 2. The current cable is not working with this new set up (even though it will plug into the Thunderbolt port) and I cannot work out if the problem is trying to use the cable itself or if I am not setting it up properly. So do I need a different cable if the only thing that is changing in the configuration is that instead of a mini DisplayPort on the iMac, I have Thunderbolt port on the iMac. From other answers I think I might need a different cable but I still can't quite work out what, or if I need one of those very expensive apple adapters.  |
| "Battery is not charging" after updating to MacOS Big Sur Posted: 28 Mar 2021 06:55 PM PDT I just upgraded my MacBook Pro to MacOS Big Sur Version 11.0 Beta, and my battery, even though the power adapted is connected, is showing the message "Battery is not charging", while displaying this (new) icon:
My Mac is indeed not charging, even though the battery source is the power adapter. How is it possible to solve this issue? UPDATE: This looks like a new feature of MacOS Big Sur. In the Battery settings, there is a new option called "Optimised battery charging" which stops battery charging after 80% to reducing battery ageing. By unchecking this option the battery starts charging again normally.

| macOS briefly falls back to console after login Posted: 28 Mar 2021 06:08 PM PDT A few days ago, my 2018 MacBook Air entered console mode after logging in:
and then switches back to graphical mode (full video here). I didn't install any system updates. I didn't see anything in the system logs. Console output shows nothing relevant (AFAIK). Also, after this issue appeared, macOS asks me to allow incoming network connections for emlog.pl. Any idea how to debug this issue? I've already tried to reset NVRAM, PRAM and SMC.  |
| Port Forwarding an SSH Connection on macOS Posted: 28 Mar 2021 08:03 PM PDT I have been trying to use SSH over the internet to connect to a few different computer on my network. Unfortunately, it only seems to work on the computer that is set to the forwarded port of 22 (ssh port). Here is what I have done: Router: Port forward 70 -> computer IP address macOS Terminal: It connects and then asks me for the password for the account "username". Even though I type in the correct password, it gives me "Permission denied (publicly, password) I have been trying this all day and cannot figure it out. I can access my router non-locally and change the computer I am trying to access to forward to port 22, but I would really like a better solution. I am not very familiar with bash commands (I think these are bash?) and am at a loss. Fortunately I have been able to connect to my storage server via SAMBA, but I would really like to be able to ssh into each computer independently.  |
| MDict can‘t load more than 122 files as group Posted: 29 Mar 2021 12:04 AM PDT I had issue with MDict which others or the developer of app can't reproduce. I can't load more than 122 files as groups. If i using more than 122 dict files, app can't show, it shows fail to open file. The files not corrupt, all of them works for others and developer. The issue only when loading all files together as group. I reinstalled new macos, issue doesn't solve it. Here is log file of app: Should be normal way; Found dictionary:/Users/**/Downloads/pro/****, added to list Files is ok, if i opened only one file is ok. I appreciate for helping.  |

| Spotlight conversion in UK units Posted: 28 Mar 2021 05:00 PM PDT If I type '1 pint' into Spotlight, I am told that this is equivalent to 0.47l. This is true for US units, but I am in the UK, where a pint is 0.57l. Many other imperial units, such as the gallon, are different in the UK, so this isn't a problem exclusively with pints. I frequently make quick conversions using Spotlight for cooking and brewing, but have only recently realised that the system is set to use US unit measurements. As far as I know, all my regional settings are set to UK, but I must have missed something somewhere. How do I tell Spotlight to use British measurements?  |

Using "top," I noticed that my systems was always running "ReportCrash"; I looked into the logs, and found: Looks like there is a problem with MRT, MRTd. Are those security thingies? Also, Google Mail's "new interface," sometimes requires me to log in, multiple times. Otherwise, it goes goes back to the my original page, when I start the browser. I am interested in not just fixing my problem, but in the integrity of my system.  |
| Compress without .DS_Store and __MACOSX Posted: 28 Mar 2021 07:10 PM PDT When I compress a folder or file by right click menu of Mac OS X, the archived file contains .DS_Store and __MACOSX folders. Because I share the archived file online for download, Windows users mistakenly trying to search the file in __MACOSX folder. I need to have a cleaner archive option. I do not want to include .DS_Store and __MACOSX folder, but only the file or folder into the archive file. All I found is CleanArchiver but it is GUI application. It really takes time and I have lots of files to compress. I am looking for a solution by context menu if possible. Is there any solution that you can recommend for clean compressing?  |
| Can SquashFS filesystems work with macOS El Capitan? Posted: 28 Mar 2021 07:55 PM PDT I am converting some .tar.gz to SquashFS (using squashfs from homebrew) using xz compression because I want to be able to mount the archives and read the content without extrating and also because the compression is about 10% better in my case. Now I only found one implementation of SquashFS for OSXFuse here. I am wondering what sort of driver or shim or software would be needed to let macOS work in any way (and hopefully read+write) with SquashFS?  |

| Better tabs management in Safari 6.x Posted: 28 Mar 2021 04:02 PM PDT I'm looking for extensions to allow the Safari 6.x versions to manage a large number of open tabs better than the current implementation. In particular I'm looking for two features:
Up to know I've found and tried several times SafariStand but it doesn't look great and it doesn't provide the features of Tree Style Tab. I would really like to move from Firefox to Safari, but for the problem of "I have too many useful extensions in Firefox." :) Has anyone discovered extensions that add these features to Safari for OS X?  |
