How to print on Big Sur/Monterey if the printer doesn't have drivers for the latest macOS?

Posted: 23 May 2022 11:43 PM PDT

The printer I am about to purchase is HP Ink Tank 115 and its macOS driver only supports up to 10.15. It doesn't have AirPrint or wireless functionality.

I have a 2020 Macbook Pro and an 2014 Air both running macOS Big Sur 11.3.1.

The salespeople at the shop told me they had customers having issues printing on Big Sur.

Might any of these possible solutions work?

  1. Install the printer's Windows 10 driver on Windows Parallels and just print from the VM everytime.

  2. Same as #1 but with Bootcamp.

  3. Downgrade to macOS 10.15 (this would be my last resort as it's not a very sustainable solution)

Any other suggestions are welcome. Thank you!

MacOS mp3 preview error when using chapter markers

Posted: 23 May 2022 11:43 PM PDT

Recently, when I preview a podcast mp3 file from the Finder, I get an error when trying to access the chapter markers.

Whether using the space bar on a selected file, or right-click and choosing Quick Look, the preview window opens and the mp3 begins to play.

The files have chapter markers, and when I click on the chapters icon, the mp3 stops playing and the window displays the message, "An error occurred with the preview of this document".

This is happening on new mp3 files and on files created previously that worked previously.

Anyone else experiencing this? Should chapters still be supported in previews?

How can I sync/transfer only photos from a specific album from iPhone to iPad

Posted: 23 May 2022 09:45 PM PDT

I have a large photo library in iCloud. I also have an older iPad that doesn't have much storage space. My iCloud photos use up way more storage than my iPad has available. Currently, the iPad is not connected to my iCloud storage for photos.

I would like to sync a selection of my iCloud photos to my iPad. On my iPhone, these photos are in an album.

I don't have a Mac computer.

How can I sync/transfer only photos from a specific album from iPhone to iPad??

Switching Control and fn keys does not work

Posted: 23 May 2022 08:37 PM PDT

I want to switch my Ctrl and fn keys. It's a MacBook Pro 2019 with 12.4 and a Touch Bar.

Keyboard > Modifier Keys:

Control (^) Key: fn Function Function (fn) Key: ^ Control

But it just doesn't work. My fn key still works as fn and Ctrl as Ctrl.

Is this a known bug?

Where are the default icons stored on macOS Monterey?

Posted: 23 May 2022 04:57 PM PDT

Running on macOS Monterey v12

I recently learned that if you create a folder called Developer in your home directory, you can drag it to the sidebar in Finder and it will display with a tiny hammer icon. However, if the folder is anywhere in iCloud instead, e.g. ~/Documents/Developer it will not have the hammer icon, nor will it show up as a hammer on the sidebar.

I tried creating ~/Documents/Developer folder and copy&pasting the DeveloperFolderIcon found in System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources. That works but I notice that those icons are actually different from the ones macOS natively uses.

The one found in Resources:

enter image description here

The one natively created:

So my question is, where are these "native", newer icons?

How to paste a shortcut action

it gives me an option to copy this action, but how do I paste it. command + v does not work when I attempt at pasting this action to another shortcut.

Switching to Homebrew [closed]

Posted: 23 May 2022 03:05 PM PDT

Is there a best practice for switching to a Homebrew setup? Say someone has had homebrew installed for a while but often forgets to install via Homebrew, not to mention the apps installed before choosing to use Homebrew. Say there are 50 apps installed through other methods (app store or internet dl); is the best option to individually uninstall and brew install, and deal with whatever app data is missing? What is the correct process?

Set QoS for command-line tools

Posted: 23 May 2022 02:55 PM PDT

I've finally got hold of a new Mac Studio with an M1 Ultra SoC, which I will stress mostly with scientific software run from the command line.

Some of it is compiled C/C++ (often using multitasking via OpenMP), some in higher-level languages like python. What sets the QoS level for code run from within (say) terminal? I have some very long-running jobs I want to ensure live entirely on the P processors with the highest possible priority. Setting OMP_NUM_THREADS=16 (the M1 Ultra has 16 P cores) seems to do a pretty good job at this, but I would like to understand how this works in more detail).

(Ideally, this would not require any MacOS-specific calls or libraries, so it can easily compile and run on other architectures.)

Stop Mouse pointer sticking - snapping when going from Macbook to External Screen above

Posted: 23 May 2022 02:54 PM PDT

In the picture the Red line is where my mouse sticks. it has a snap to grid like feel. it does not stick at the other external monitor boundary just the top of the mac screen. and only when 2 displays are touching top and side boundaries.

This is my setup

enter image description here

This is where it sticks (RED) - unfortunately you cannot fully see it because I covered it with red but if you look closely the top menu grey line on the mac is curved, this ends up being the key to the problem.

enter image description here

This is where it doesn't stick

enter image description here

It also does not stick if the macbook is at the top (but this is not an option)

iCloud Drive re-uploads everything for second time

Posted: 23 May 2022 02:04 PM PDT

I realized that iCloud Drive, without me making any configuration changes in Settings, is reuploading all files. This happened so far 2-3 times within the month. I am worried if such "auto-force sync" will cause any data loss. Did this happened to anyone else?

Does anyone have copy-paste between screen-shared Macs working when using "Push Through" with macOS Monterey 12.4?

Posted: 23 May 2022 11:41 PM PDT

Before AND After installing Version 12.4

I use Screen Sharing (full screen) on my Mac Mini (M1, 2020) to connect (via LAN) to my iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015).

  • My Mac Mini screen sits to the left of my iMac screen.
  • Once connected, I can use the keyboard/mouse (connected to the M1) to manipulate the iMac (which has no connected keyboard or mouse) BUT FIRST I change the M1's Mission Control desktop to display the iMac desktop (i.e., show the same iMac screen on the M1 monitor and iMac):
    • I can manipulate the iMac screen remotely (using the M1 mouse/keyboard).
    • I can copy (Cmd+C) data from one machine and paste (Cmd+V) the data into the other machine (in either direction).

After installing 12.4 on Both Machines

As before, I can adjust the M1 Mission Control desktop to display the iMac screen (both the M1 and the iMac showing the same screen). I can manipulate the iMac AND copy-paste data in either direction.

Improved Screen Sharing, but no Copy-Paste

  • Now, I can use "push through". As the mouse traverses right across the M1 screen, when the mouse reaches the right edge of the M1 screen IT CONTINUES onto the left edge of the adjacent iMac screen WITHOUT having to change the M1's Mission Control Desktop. [The M1 shows a Mission Control desktop that IS NOT the iMac desktop.]
  • Once the cursor is "on" the iMac screen, the mouse and keyboard attached to the M1 operates the iMac (very cool).
  • In this new mode of operation, copy-paste is not intuitive:
    • I cannot copy-paste data (in either direction) between the M1 and the iMac when using "push through" to switch the mouse/keyboard focus between the two machines.
    • I CAN continue to use copy-paste BUT ONLY if I adjust the M1's Mission Control desktop to display the iMac screen.

Question

Has anyone found a way to copy-paste between two machines when using the "push through" model (i.e., without having to change Mission Control desktops)?

Shell script error 127

Posted: 24 May 2022 01:06 AM PDT

I am not knowledgeable about shell scripting, but I'm using a command for merging files together, which works great on my computer, but when I move it to someone else's computer, it generates error 127.

The initial variable setup include also this:

set Processing to path to resource "Processing" set AppendWorkflow to Processing & "AppendIndesignPDFPages.workflow" as string set AppendWorkflow to quoted form of (POSIX path of AppendWorkflow)

The command I use in the longer script and that are generating the error are these:

set command to "/usr/bin/automator " & AppendWorkflow set output to do shell script command

When working correctly (that is all the time in my computer) I get a set of merged documents into a single PDF. But, like I said, when running the same script on another computer we get the 127 error (the rest of the script runs correctly on the other computer). My searching around for an answer seems to indicate that, instead of a permissions problem (my first guess) I should have a full path to the command. Since I don't know enough about shell scripting, I can't tell if I have it or not.

Any hints to a solution?

Thanks.

Can you tell iTerm2 profiles top-level windows to never show up in Cmd-Tab?

Posted: 23 May 2022 06:05 PM PDT

I use a primary iTerm2 window, and some further iTerm2 windows which display specific information (e.g., like a dashboard). They live in well-visible positions on my screen, and do their own thing non-interactively. I never need to Cmd-Tab to them.

That said, of course (by Murphy's Law) whenever I do Cmd-Tab to the single iTerm2 icon showing up in the Cmd-Tab selection, I always end up in one of those windows, not in the one I constantly type in.

Is there a way to change this? I am aware of questions like this, but that's not it. My question is not related to screens, displays or spaces. I could imagine having some tool to mark a long-running window with some hypothetical "ignore this window in Cmd-Tab", or maybe some arcane setting in iTerm2. Those windows all have their own iTerm2 "Profile", but I could not find a setting obviously related to this in the iTerm2 profile settings.

Photos: Import All New Items doesn't work

Posted: 23 May 2022 04:05 PM PDT

I have over 30,000 photos on my iPhone 8 Plus. Photos Library on my MacBook Pro is currently empty.

I tried to import all photos from my iPhone to the Photos app but had a lot of problems. The first few times it was stuck at around either 13,000 or 15,000 photos, now the "Import All New Items" button doesn't work at all.

I tried restarting both devices (also in safe mode), deleting the Photos Library, and creating a new one, but nothing helped.

If anyone has had a similar issue, how did you resolve it?

MacBook Pro Retina turns off during Apple logo

Posted: 23 May 2022 08:03 PM PDT

I have a mid-2014 15-inch MacBook Pro Retina. I was using it half an hour ago, and everything worked perfectly. I turned it off and left it for five minutes or less. I turned it back on to check something I forgot, and now it won't boot. the little progress bar underneath the Apple logo fills in much slower than normal, and the computer turns off when the progress bar is about 2/3 full.

Battery is fine. The computer was plugged in before I turned it off, so the battery is full, and it's plugged in now.

I have a Windows partition I can boot from with no problems since the Mac problem started.

Trying to start in safe mode results in either a black screen indefinitely or the computer turning off when the progress bar is maybe 1/10 full.

Trying to start in diagnostics mode results in a black screen indefinitely.

Tried resetting the system management controller. Nothing changed.

Tried resetting the PRAM. What happened is the Mac kept restarting every five seconds or so while I kept cmd+alt+P+R held down and then returned to the above problem when I let go.

If it helps, the internal SSD is a 960-GB Aura drive with two partitions: 760 GB with Catalina and 200 GB with Windows 10. It is not the internal drive that came originally with the Mac, but the replacement was made several years ago and I'd never had a problem with it before.

No IPv4 access on my Macbook Pro, only IPv6 works

Posted: 23 May 2022 03:12 PM PDT

MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2017, Two Thunderbolt 3 ports) / macOS Big Sur 11.4

I'm experiencing a weird WiFi issue at our remote office where I'm only able to connect to IPv6 addresses and not IPv4 addresses. Ping does not work, ping6 works. Local DNS works as ping6 resolves correctly. I can access google.com in my browser (resolves to an IPv6) but not stackoverflow.com (resolves to an IPv4).

Network settings

I've tried rebooting both my machine as well as the router. My iPhone works correctly on the network and shows similar values for the network addresses. My mobile hotspot works and other WiFis work on the Macbook. Internet is working for everyone else and everything was working fine in May when I last connected to this network (I did update from Mojave to Big Sur in the meantime but otherwise the set-up should be the same).

I've tried switching IPv6 to link-local only, configured IPv4 manually, removed external DNS addresses, disabled all proxies, turned the firewall off, flushed the DNS cache, booted to safe mode, disabled IPv6 completely via Terminal, uninstalled NordVPN, and done other things I don't even remember anymore and I've run out of things to try.

I don't have access to configure the router, but aside from that does anybody have any ideas?

WiFi connection on my iPad automatically gets disconnected when the screen goes off

Posted: 23 May 2022 07:04 PM PDT

When screen goes off on my iPad, the WiFi gets disconnected automatically. How do I keep WiFi enabled? I just noticed this problem is only when the hotspot is made by a xiaomi mobile(which makes a connected chain symbol rather than normal wifi symbol) which is the same type as the hotspot by Apple devices. This problem is not when hotspot is created by other android devices.

Running a cleanup of icloud desktop on load

Posted: 23 May 2022 03:05 PM PDT

I have the following launchd saved as an agent in: /Users/my_name/Library/LaunchAgents

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>  <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">  <plist version="1.0">      <dict>          <key>Label</key>          <string>local.desktop.cleanup</string>          <key>ProgramArguments</key>          <array>              <string>zsh</string>              <string>-c</string>              <string>/usr/local/bin/trash ~/Desktop/Screen*</string>          </array>          <key>RunAtLoad</key>          <true/>          <key>StartInterval</key>          <integer>3600</integer>          <key>StandardErrorPath</key>          <string>/tmp/local.desktop.cleanup.err</string>          <key>StandardOutPath</key>          <string>/tmp/local.desktop.cleanup.out</string>          <key>KeepAlive</key>          <dict>              <key>NetworkState</key>              <true/>          </dict>      </dict>  </plist>

It runs a very simple program that moves, instead of removes, the selected files to the bin. I've only been testing the launchd's success with RunAtLoad and I cannot get it to work. I get the following error in my log file after each time I log in:

zsh:1: no matches found: /Users/my_name/Desktop/Screen*

My Desktop is actually one of those icloud folders that I suppose MacOS just has symlinked. My theory is that maybe these files do not exist locally at the point the program is run. If this is the case, or not, I would appreciate any ideas or solutions to make this specific use case work.

N.B. You'll noticed I left KeepAlive NetworkState in to show I attempted to delay the run until the network was "alive", however, this wouldn't account for downloading any files.

How can I debug an extremely slow login?

Posted: 23 May 2022 11:02 PM PDT

Recently, I poured water onto the keyboard of my MacBook 2017 (4 thunderbolt), and I forced shutdown it. After letting it dry for two weeks, I opened it and everything seems to work. It also passes the Apple Hardware Test.

However, login (login window, switching user, authenticating for root permission, terminal login) is extremely slow, taking around 20 to 40 seconds. After restarting a couple of times, the behavior does not change. After reinstalling macOS 10.13.6, High Sierra, (keeping application and data), the behavior persists. After starting up in Safe Mode and restarting, the time shortened a little bit.

To verify that this is not a hardware problem, I copied the system partition to another MacBook Pro (same generation) and I can see the same behavior, suggesting that this is a software issue.

Update: On the other MacBook Pro, I run chflags -R noschg, nosappnd, nouchg, nouappnd / and boot up the machine in Safe Mode (and rebooted). The issue was gone, but only for Safe Mode. Starting again in normal boot recreates the problem, and further Safe Mode cannot correct it.

Things I have tried on my other MacBook Pro that does not work:

  • Reinstall macOS High Sierra
  • Removing caches and user added filesystems/extensions/launchdaemons/launchagents
  • Upgrade to Mojave (login for login window is extremely fast, but terminal login is still slow. Plus it deletes all the files I have in root account (downloads, desktop, documents, etc.)
  • Partial copy done by Carbon Copy Cloner from my mac because it disconnected after a certain while in Target Disk Mode. System work and login is fast. But for some reason I forget I erased the system and did a full copy again.
  • Repaired home permissions using diskutil resetUserPermissions / 501 then 502, 503, etc.
  • Repaired disk permissions using https://www.firewolf.science/2016/07/repairpermissions-v3-now-supports-repairing-permissions-on-macos-mojave/

The output of dtruss login root is here.

The output of sample login as instructed here: here The main cause is semaphore_wait_trap, but I don't know how to debug it.

How can I troubleshoot this problem?

Stop mouse pointer from sticking to the edge of display in dual monitor setup

Posted: 23 May 2022 03:12 PM PDT

I am using macOS Mojave on a MacBook Pro.

I don't know if it's just me, but I feel like the mouse pointer, from time to time, seems to stick to the edge of the monitor when I try to move it from secondary monitor to the primary monitor (the secondary monitor is to the right, primary (laptop built in monitor) to the left).

If I try to make it happen on purpose it never happens, which makes me feel like I was mistaken in the beginning, but after playing around for a while I feel like it definitely is happening, but only sometimes and I'm not sure why.

Does this annoying snap-to-monitor-edge feature have a name, and more importantly how do I disable it?

Configuration profile for managing multi monitor display

Posted: 23 May 2022 11:42 PM PDT

I am not sure how exactly to phrase this, but wondering if there is a way to manage the display preference and monitor arrangement with a unique profile on macOS?

The problem is, I have a home and office multi monitor setup but the specific monitors are arranged different in each environment. So when I move the laptop between work and home the display arrangement is all confused and I have to manually change in display preferences.

+------------+ +----+ | +----+ +------------+ | | | | | | | | 4K Dell | | TB Display | | 4K | | | TB | | | +------------+ |DELL| | | | +------------+ +------+ | | | | | +--------+ | MBP | +----+ | +----+ | MBP | +------+ | +--------+ +------+ | +--------+ | Home Setup | Work Setup | +

Because of specific physical constraints I am unable to change the physical layout of the monitors. macOS seems to automatically detect by monitor type.

I am wondering if there is a software configuration and profile I could create to manage this? For example, tell the system when at home the TB Display is on the left and horizontally oriented, but at work it is on the right and vertically oriented, etc..

Is there an app or AppleScript technique that manages this?

How to replace the System's Download folder with one in an external drive?

Posted: 23 May 2022 02:46 PM PDT

When you open finder, there is a download folder with a unique icon. I'd like to move that folder to an external one and force the system to recognise that new location.

Slow login and Terminal loading time in Yosemite, possibly related to open directory

Posted: 23 May 2022 09:03 PM PDT

I have a problem with slow login times in Yosemite. Logging in is speedy after booting, but after a while (a few days usually) it slows down and can take 20-30 seconds. The time to load a new Terminal window / tab also increases. If I reboot, the problem is fixed...for a while. I tried the answers in this question and nothing seemed to work. I ran the profiling suggested here and this part of the output looks suspicious:

+ ! 8118 ??? (in login) load address 0x10583c000 + 0x2a8f [0x10583ea8f] + ! 8118 openpam_dispatch (in libpam.2.dylib) + 277 [0x7fff86957a7d] + ! 8117 ??? But further Googling hasn't turned up anything helpful for solving the problem. Any ideas on how I can further diagnose or fix this issue?

Mavericks lock screen doesn't show screen saver

Posted: 23 May 2022 02:07 PM PDT

Prior to upgrading to Mavericks, when I chose to lock my MacBook Pro's screen, it would do so with my screen saver options (rotate through images in a folder, and show a clock). However, when I go to lock my screen now, it's simply a black screen.

Is there a way to make Mavericks use my screen saver settings when I choose to lock my screen as with older versions of OS X?

typing a backtick on Mac OS X Snow Leopard

The backtick character is one I use on a regular basis on StackExchange.

Linux' `ps f` (tree view) equivalent on OSX?

Posted: 23 May 2022 04:26 PM PDT

How can I get a tree view like the one below on OSX?

vartec@some_server:~$ ps xf PID TTY STAT TIME COMMAND 11519 ? S 0:00 sshd: vartec@pts/0 11520 pts/0 Ss 0:00 \_ -bash 11528 pts/0 R+ 0:00 \_ ps xf

To clarify, I'm mostly interested in the tree structure, not the extended information.
