Is there a way to print as PDF in landscape mode using Safari? Posted: 23 Mar 2021 12:14 AM PDT Short question is: can I use Safari to print out a webpage as PDF, but in landscape mode, if no printer is added whatsoever? Details: First of all, I cannot use Google Chrome to print out the document https://redux-toolkit.js.org/usage/immer-reducers and be able to highlight it, because the highlighting is about 1/3 inch off (try highlighting the header or text and we can see). So I am using Safari. On my other MacBook Pro, I added a printer, and was able to choose Landscape Mode. But I have a MacBook Air M1 and don't always use that MacBook Pro, and if I use the MacBook Air M1 to print out that webpage, there is no way to choose Landscape Mode, seemingly because no printer is selected, and there is no printer "capability" of printing in landscape mode. So is there a way to make it work, other than to somehow find a real printer and add a printer? |
USB 3.0 hub connecting over USB 2.0; How to correct? Posted: 22 Mar 2021 10:34 PM PDT Issue: I have a couple USB-C 3.0 hubs, and a 2016/2017 MacBook Pro 13" [Fn-Key]. The first hub, everything connected over USB 2.0, so I assumed it was just a shitty hub, so I bought one from Anker that is verifiably 3.0... And all my devices connect over USB 2.0. Specifically, the device registers as both a USB 2.0 hub connect to the USB 3.0 controller, and as a USB 3.0 hub connected to the USB 3.1 controller. However, devices always default to the USB 2.0 device... — This is confirmed by System Information. I tested the same hub on a Windows PC with a USB-C port and it connected as a USB SuperSpeed (3.0) hub over the USB 3.1 controller... So why is my MacBook connecting it as a legacy 2.0 device? It's clearly not. The devices connected are USB 3 devices that do not require external power. The hub is a USB 3.0 SuperSpeed hub. But my MacBook keeps prioritizing USB 2.0 for whatever reason... Is there a way to disable the 3.0 controller and/or the 2.0 hub device? Update: One of the USB 3 devices randomly started connecting over USB 3.0 instead of USB 2.0, but another still connects over USB 2.0. Sometimes the flash drive (the one that started connecting right) still connects over USB 2.0 however. It seems... random? |

Posted: 22 Mar 2021 09:39 PM PDT Using Numbers version 10.3.5 Running on macOS Big Sur 11.2.2 Something has happened such that when I type into a Table cell or a Text box, the letters flip. They fill the box in reverse. Almost like I'm looking out of the monitor rather that at it. When I type "United States" the cell or text box will enter "setatS detinU". Have I inadvertently pressed some key sequence that has done this? This only happens in a single Numbers file, but it happens in every tab of the file. Solution(s) appreciated. |

Weird red square box appears in foxit reader pdfs upon clicking in that region Posted: 22 Mar 2021 06:42 PM PDT How to disable or get rid of this red square box? It appears when I am single clicking the text "connected" (however, it will appear upon single clicking anything in that square region) This is how the issue looks This is how it normally looks (when I haven't clicked in the red square region) Note: This issue is common for all pdfs, only most of the pages. This doesn't happen when viewing the same pdfs in other pdf viewers, for eg, preview. It started around 6 months, only decided to post this today. |
Macbook Air 2020 M1 consumes SSD life too fast Posted: 22 Mar 2021 06:36 PM PDT Macbook Air 2020 M1 consumes SSD life too fast. The SSD wrote twice as much data in two weeks as the Macbook Retina 2017 did in two years. I use VSCodium and Google Chrome for Web development. I haven't downloaded anything other than those programs. I haven't logged into iCloud. I have not connected any iPhones to this laptop. I haven't even downloaded old projects. I don't know exactly, I estimate my data on the SSD to be less than 1-5GB considering the programs I have installed in unpacked state. That said, smartctl shows that I have written 17Tb of data to the SSD and continue to write 1Tb daily. I honestly don't understand how this can be. I keep working on my old macbook with the same programs VSCodium and Google Chrome. The smartctl program says I'm writing about 20-30Mb per day. The number of writes to the SSD only goes up when I download files from the internet. I have never tried XCode. Maybe there are special programs for Macbook M1 for web development. If I replace VSCodium with XCode and Google Chrome with Safari, can my mac survive the rest of this year? |

photos library shows blanks after updating the library Posted: 22 Mar 2021 05:20 PM PDT What happened
In full screen mode, the images appear blank: This is the same for all media, i.e. Live Photos, videos and portraits. However, all media is still in the library package (opened the files in Preview, no problem there) and all metadata (location, tags, lens info, date) is fine, too. Further, these photos are not camera-, location-, face-detection- or file name-specific. They seem to be totally random, however all photos taken before march 2015 are fine (I am probably reading into this, but What I have tried so far:
More info about the system
My question is: Does anyone know how I can effectively get these blanks to disappear, without having to manually reimport all photos? I have a couple more options/ideas up my sleeve, however, they will take a lot of time, so maybe someone here already knows a better/faster fix/idea than the following:
Update #1 I have updated macOS to version 11.2.3 to no avail. FYI, I have looked into the following posts:

Creating a reminder on Mac programmatically/in a script, without opening the Reminders app Posted: 22 Mar 2021 08:39 PM PDT For creating reminders from a script or command-line, the usual advice is to use AppleScript and
So what's the trick for doing this? I'm pretty sure there were no web APIs involved, since I never had an iCloud account and I don't think reminders can even be synced with third-parties like the calendar. Though I guess Fantastical could do something behind my back, but it's hard to imagine it happening without a trace. |
Login trouble after upgrading from Catalina to Big Sur Posted: 22 Mar 2021 08:37 PM PDT Upgraded to Big Sur on a mid-2015 MacBook Pro. The upgrade appears to complete successfully, but at the login screen, when I click an account and enter the password, I briefly see a beach ball, then an interminably spinning "wheel" below the account name/pic like this. I have tried various workarounds to no avail, including:
Full disclosure, NoMAD and NoMAD Login were installed/configured on this MacBook before starting the Big Sur upgrade. We've been using NoMAD and NoMAD Login at least as far back as High Sierra, so I don't think that's the trouble... Also, apparently NoMAD Login isn't loading. At the login screen, I see the Big Sur login screen, not the NoMAD Login screen. I would appreciate any tips/suggestions for other possible steps. I'd rather not wipe/format and clean install Big Sur if I can avoid that. I managed to gain ssh access to the normally-booted system. I have an Apple Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter connected to the MacBook. The system wasn't connecting to the network (no associated DHCP lease) when booting normally, but it was connected when in recovery mode. I found if I boot the system normally, enter my password, press/hold Option and click the button to login (not sure if this is necessary), the wired network comes up and I can ssh to the machine using an administrator account. I was hoping to add another (admin) account this way, but if I try sudo [some command], the session hangs and doesn't prompt me for a password. I was able to use this method of access to reset the administrator's password, but this made no difference. Without a functioning sudo, I don't think there's a way to create a new administrator account... After backing up critical data, I abandoned efforts to resolve the post-upgrade trouble, booted to recovery mode, used Disk Utility to delete the volume set and the Reinstall macOS Big Sur option to do a clean install. Installation went smoothly and the MacBook works normally. While reinstalling applications, I was planning to install the Spiceworks Collection Agent and encountered this nugget: |
Can't boot from Big Sur installed on a USB Posted: 22 Mar 2021 08:26 PM PDT I'm trying to install Big Sur on a USB so that I can boot from the separate installation on the usb. Note, I'm not trying to create an installation USB. I followed the directions here and everything worked, except after installation, at the final stage of the boot it just hangs. I've tried this on a few different macs, and they all hang at the same step. Booting up in verbose mode gives the following final output before hanging (this may be a little off because I used OCR, but I tried to correct what seemed relevant, note in this log it was attached to a thunderbolt port): It seems like maybe the problem is with Some things I've tried:
The one thing I haven't tried is seeing if I follow the same process for a different usb drive if I encounter the same issue. That should at least narrow it down to the process of installing or the image itself. UpdatesUsing a different device with the same image did work, so it seems like this is a hardware problem with the usb device. However, I've been unable to get this to work with multiple different usb-c devices. Catalina also worked, so this seems to be something funny with Big Sur. I've also be unable to upgrade from Catalina to Big Sur once the installation is working. |
Lost one AirPod Pro — but “find my“ thinks it is together with the other one! Posted: 22 Mar 2021 11:03 PM PDT I lost one AirPod pro in my house. However, even though the other AirPod is in its charging case, when I ping them on "find my", only the one I have makes a sound. See screenshot. When I click on "right" , see screenshot, (not sure it is even clickable) — nothing happens. Unlikely that the battery is dead since this just happened recently. Any suggestions would be appreciated! I could "forget" the earbuds and then reconnect them in Bluetooth and try again, but not sure if that'sa good idea... |

Apple Watch 1st Gen serial number and pairing issue Posted: 22 Mar 2021 05:02 PM PDT I am trying to get the serial number of my Apple Watch 1st gen watch. I can't get it off the back as wear has scraped it off over time. I thought I would try and get it off the watch itself in settings, but I can't pair it to my iPhone 11 (running iOS 14.1). Every time I try to pair, my iPhone tells me I need to have the latest version of iOS on my iPhone. Which I have. Is there any way I can get the serial number without pairing? Or is there a way to help me pair it to get the number? |

VS Code - Code Helper process using more than 100% CPU on macOS Posted: 22 Mar 2021 08:02 PM PDT I noticed that my MacBook gets hot and noisy (fans) when using VS Code (v1.31). The Activity Monitor shows the process Code Helper using more than 100% of CPU. It started happening with one repository which is huge. Only one window opened, no files opened, and it always uses more than 100% CPU. Checking in Microsoft/GitHub, there was an issue reported but they closed it saying "This issue has been closed automatically because it needs more information and has not had recent activity." , but it is still an ongoing issue. I tried some of the recommendations in the comments but didn't work. Does anybody has more info and/or know how to avoid this? Is it possible to make some configurations for VS Code to not burn the MacBook? |

How to change a PDF's title? (not file name) Posted: 22 Mar 2021 10:10 PM PDT My question is in reference to the title shown in Acrobat Reader's tab and title bar that reads "Modern business letter." I generated the PDF from a .docx document, and the document is generated based on a LibreOffice template (.odt) named "Modern business letter", which is where the title name comes from. I know how to change the template name in LibreOffice, but that can cause unwanted error if I forget to change it the next time I use the same template. Im looking for other macOS options so I don't have to struggle in LibreOffice. How do I change the individual PDF title, either in Acrobat Reader or in Finder? |
