Moving contacts between groups in iOS devices? Posted: 31 Mar 2021 02:39 AM PDT Can I move a contact from the All group to another group in an iOS device? I don't see a way to do this on my iPhone XR with iOS 14.4.1 |
F11 key no longer works (with or without fn) Posted: 31 Mar 2021 01:56 AM PDT The solution is probably out there but I don't know the terms to google to find it! I was using F10, F11 and F12 to turn the volume up and down on my Mac. When I press them now, either on their own, holding down for example fn+F11, or with shift+option+f11, I get the grey volume box pop up on the screen but with the 'no' symbol underneath, as in the attached screenshot. I checked in system preferences and I haven't' selected 'use as normal function keys'. It's also not that there is no sound, just that I can't change the volume. How did I manage this?! And how do I undo it? Thanks! |
Will turning off and delete photos via icloud preferences on macbook delete my iphones photos? Posted: 31 Mar 2021 12:05 AM PDT I was writing a note in my notes app when a popup came up saying my cloud was full, it prompted me to go to references, so I did. Now in iCloud preferences I see the following: For a while now I have wanted to turn off iCloud saving of my photos, so that can be allocated towards saving my notes. Question: If I click the "Turn off and Delete" for photos, will it delete my photos from my phone? |

Downloads stop when using fast user switching Posted: 30 Mar 2021 09:16 PM PDT I have Mac OS Big Sur installed. When downloading files in Chrome or Safari and I fast user switch to a different user, the current downloads are stopped with a "Failed - Network disconnected" error message. How do I stop the network from being turned off when fast switching between different users? |
How to convert AppleScript URL type to string? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 08:55 PM PDT In AppleScript, I can cast some variables (e.g., the clipboard), to the built-in URL type: If my clipboard contains an RTF link to https://temochka.com/, This last part ( |
iPhone7 transmits excessive _sleep-proxy._udp.local mDNS messages Posted: 30 Mar 2021 06:56 PM PDT I noticed suddenly increased battery discharge rate while my phone is on home Wi-Fi. Fired ngrep and observed mDNS packets with a rate about one per second. Other phones on the same network don't exhibit this phenomena. I provided network dump to Apple support but even second level and supposedly next level support were completely clueless and demonstrated very strong absence of any mDNS knowledge. Here is the one of the packets There are several other Apple mobile and desktop devices on the network and none transmits nowhere near as many packets on port 5353 as this particular iPhone. Has anyone seen or can explain this behavior? |
How does the iPhone round when calculating averages in the Health App? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 01:40 PM PDT Tracking steps month by month and am curious how the app rounds numbers. For example, a calculated average of 99.53 does not round up to 100, but shows as 99. This is deep in the weeds, but wanted to know how it works. |
Time Machine backups to Time Capsule use internet data. How to stop this? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 11:54 AM PDT thanks in advance for the help. Main issue: by using an internet data traffic monitoring app (TripMode), I finally found out what was using up my home internet data allowance (1TB/month).... Time Machine backups to Time Capsule! I don't understand why, as TM backups should only be local traffic. I use the modem from my ISP, and connect that to my TC so it can act as a router that my laptop connects to for internet usage (and TM backups). I also have an Airport Express connected wirelessly to the TC that I use for sending audio out to my speaker system. Is there some way to change settings on my TC and/or modem to restrict the TC's access to the internet and then just use the modem as my apartment router, while still enabling TM backups and the Airport Express (airplay) audio functionality? OR, the holy grail here, just stop TM backups from using my internet data. I have definitely verified that the backups are using internet data: I have done isolated sessions with backups going and TripMode on that show the same data usage as TM backup data amount. TripMode shows this usage as being from "Disk Images" (as opposed to "Mail" or "Chrome", etc). Any help would be sooo appreciated. |
How do I download App Store? [closed] Posted: 30 Mar 2021 12:38 PM PDT I have a school iPad but the main iPad have cracks and the teacher doesn't like the App Store and I can't get it and also I can only get school games |
Posted: 30 Mar 2021 01:34 PM PDT Question MacOS Catalina - System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> Privacy -> Accessibility What does granting 'control (of) your computer' include? The following question from 2013 provides some very broad information: What does Security & Privacy/Accessibility enable? but I would greatly appreciate any more specifics that people can provide.
Even if I trust an app now (no mean feat), there is always the possibility that it could suffer a supply-chain attack in the future. I would like to understand more about the damage that an app could do if I grant it access to my Mac.
I found the following page in the Apple Developer documentation: https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/documentation/LanguagesUtilities/Conceptual/MacAutomationScriptingGuide/AutomatetheUserInterface.html It seems like one example of 'control' could be for an app to instruct Safari to open a particular (malicious) website? |
How can I programmatically get the Terminal scrollback text? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 09:54 PM PDT I ran across this comment which stated that it is possible to access the text in the macOS Terminal scrollback:
I've done some searching, but I have not had any luck finding anything online saying how this can be done. The reason I ask is that I'm looking for possible solutions to this Stack Overflow question, and am investigating whether there is a way to get text from the most recently run command in the macOS Terminal. For this specific use case, I'm hoping to find the line(s) that match a particular pattern, so I can extract the matching text and pass it to the ↓ In short, how can I get the text of the Terminal scrollback? Bonus points if it's limited to just the ouptut of the last command, but I can make a workable solution to my problem if I can get the entire Terminal scrollback text. |
Wanted: Ad blocking without a periodic fee, Big Sur, Apple Silicon [closed] Posted: 30 Mar 2021 11:52 AM PDT I'm looking for an ad blocking solution that works on Apple silicon/Big Sur, with Safari, and does not involve a periodic fee. (I want to buy the software once, not rent it.) Or at worst, if it does involve such a fee, it needs to be payable without involving Apple, since they've previously caused lapses in subscriptions for me by not paying such fees reliably. |

Can I get an alert when my iPhone 5S is unplugged? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 02:50 PM PDT My iPhone 5S gives a beep or buzz when I plug it in to a charger, but doesn't provide any notification, apart from the lightning bolt in the top right hand corner disappearing, when it gets unplugged. I'd like to get such a notification because my phone has a tendency to stop charging if the cable has the slightest touch to it - this happens with many different cables. My phone is not jailbroken, so https://www.idownloadblog.com/2013/02/23/unpower-jailbreak-tweak/ doesn't help. I'm on iOS 12.5.1 |
Use OSX Mail from Panther (10.3) with iCloud email address Posted: 30 Mar 2021 06:13 PM PDT I'd like to use OSX Mail from Panther (10.3) with an iCloud email address. When I punch in the valid iCloud account info and server ids, both smtp.mail.me.com and imap.mail.me.com servers fail to connect. I saw a reference to app-specific passwords some Apple docs, but I couldn't get that to work. What am I missing? Thanks! |
Why is my Macbook Pro going to sleep while using it? Posted: 31 Mar 2021 01:00 AM PDT 2012 Macbook Pro 15" Non Retina Randomly goes to sleep while I'm using it. Sometimes it resets altogether. Its not a magnet, or Hot Corners It takes 30-60 seconds to wake up. The indicator light on the front lip stays solid for a long period and then fades on and off before I can wake it back up. |
MacOs BigSur 11.1 Display Flickering Posted: 31 Mar 2021 01:31 AM PDT Since I have updated my Mac on the newest version of MacOS BigSur 11.1 my external monitor HP Z27n G2 starts flickering heavily in 2560 x 1440 resolution. Now I have changed the resolution to 2048 x 1152 and it seems to be okay. Now actually I would like to have the better resolution because the monitor can it and before the update it wasn't a problem. Does anyone have the same issue and have a better solution then going down in resolution? Thanks in Advance |

Saving Terminal Color/Opacity Preferences Posted: 31 Mar 2021 01:33 AM PDT My question is related to this question: Transparent Background in Terminal? I have successfully found the menu to change color/opacity. I used the "homebrew" profile. Then I attempted to change the opacity as shown in the answer. However, once I put the opacity at 100% and closed the window, it completely ignored my changes and went back to 90%. How do I actually ensure that my preferences are saved? There is no "OK" or "apply" button on the color menu. |
Unable to redirect Salesforce links to Salesforce App Posted: 31 Mar 2021 02:20 AM PDT I'm unable to open the Salesforce links in Salesforce App. The links are directly opening in Safari, but they need to open in the Salesforce App rather than the browser. Is there some settings involved so that iOS is able to recognise the App by clicking on a link? How do I get this to work? |
Dual monitor flickering: the secondary monitor does the flicker Posted: 30 Mar 2021 11:44 AM PDT I am experiencing flickering with my dual monitor setup. The nature of the flicker is "on/off", i.e. the screen gets completely black for a split second (sometimes a few seconds) and it goes back on. Sometimes it happens when I am not doing anything on that monitor, and sometimes it seems like it is triggered when pixels change on the monitor (opening something, or even just moving the mouse cursor) I have a dual monitor set up at work with my MacBook Pro 13" 2017 (two thunderbolt 3 ports). I am using the following to connect these monitors to my Mac:
The docking station connects to the MacBook via a thunderbolt 3 cable. The AOC monitor is connected directly to the docking with DisplayPort. The BenQ is then connected to the remaining Thunderbolt 3 port on my Mac via a HDMI-USB-C adapter. The docking station provides power to the Mac. It seems random which monitor flickers; sometime it is the BenQ, other times it is the AOC. Also, it is random which port is involved in the flicker. However, I only see flickering when two monitors are connected at once. I have also used a Satechi slim multiport (as a very simple docking station), and I see the same flickering behavior. I have tried different cables, and the issue persists. I have also tried another AOC (same model) monitor together with the BenQ, and it still flickers. I am going to try another MacBook Pro (same model) this week, and will report back. Is this a software issue with High Sierra? Are the two monitors "incompatible" for some reason? I see no reason why the flickering happens. I really hope someone can help me out. It seems similar issues are common, but I have not yet found a common explanation to fix these things. Needless to say, I have tried the standard things, like various resets etc. |
Can't connect to L2TP over IPSec VPN from Mac 10.12.4 Posted: 31 Mar 2021 01:47 AM PDT Have troubles with connecting to my VPN from Mac. Using default Mac client, pre-shared secret. Also this works well on iOS 10.3.2 from the same Wi-Fi network. Firewall is disable, no Little Snitch. macOS error message says 'The L2TP-VPN server did not respond' Also, I've tried to connect open free VPN, us.freel2tpvpn.com and got no response again, so I think it's a macOS problem, not the server / routing. Do you have any ideas? Here is my /var/log/ppp.log update 1 checked udp ports 500, 1701, 4500 — all open from mac update 2 set up another l2tp ipsec preshered secret server on windows and got same result — don't respond on mac, connected on iphone update 3 wiresharked booth on 'connections', and there is no udp packets from mac on connection, but test packets are ok. definitely the mac vpn client is broken (firewall is off), where should I dig? |
Folder displaying in terminal but not finder Posted: 31 Mar 2021 12:44 AM PDT Alright, so I just started beginning web development using my mac. My localhost says "It works" and I read somewhere I need to add my code files etc in Library/WebServer/Documents. However, inside my Library, I do not see any WebServer folder. I can only see WebKit. But if I try to locate the folder with terminal, it exists right there inside /Library. What mystery is this? Please help me out. |
Google Chrome won't open URL files by double click Posted: 31 Mar 2021 12:46 AM PDT I recently tried to open a URL link I saved onto my desktop by double clicking it, but it will not open correctly. If I DRAG & DROP the file into chrome works fine. The code of the file is as follows: the file is saved with a ".url" extension If I double click on the file I'm prompted by finder to choose which application to open it with (Chrome is greyed out, but I choose 'All Applications' and then choose Chrome), it will then simply load a page in Chrome and display the code on the page, instead of opening the url specified in the code. running Version 50.0.2661.94 (64-bit) on OSX 10.9.5 |
