OEM macbook pro battery is full, but it won't start

Posted: 20 Mar 2021 12:08 AM PDT

I have a mid-2009 MBP with a new OEM battery. It only works on charger, but not on battery. The battery status is 'Replace Now' on both Coconut Battery and menu bar.

This is the second OEM battery in a row that has this problem. The sequence of events (for both batteries):

  1. Replace battery and it works, but drains fast (100% to 0% in an hour or so).
  2. Battery capacity starts to drop over a few days (100% - 89% - 84%)
  3. A week or so on, after leaving it in sleep the mac won't start up on battery. But still works on charger.
  4. Battery capacity is 84%, holding 100% charge. Condition is poor, and it's not providing power.

enter image description here

Does anyone have experience in this? I doubt it's 2 batteries with exactly the same problem, in the same sequence. I have heard it may be the power controller on the motherboard that's failed.

Any advice is welcome. Thanks!

Updating an application for everyone based off of specific user input

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 11:41 PM PDT

I have not found a question similar to this so please forgive me if this has already been asked. I am trying to make an iOS application that needs to receive input from some users (users with a certain kind of account) and based on their input, update what other users see. The input from the "administrative" accounts needs to be able to influence any "customer" account. How would I keep this data globally? Can anyone give me advice as to how to do this in Xcode? How can I take what one user inputs and use that change what another user sees?

Adjust path for iTunes / Music files after files move

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 11:15 PM PDT

I moved all my music library to a network drive. So now all my library is messed up as Music (former iTunes) can not find the files. I have to manually set the path for each file I want to play (~3500) files. I tried to grep -r '/Volumes/S_Drive/Music/Music/' to see which file I could replace the paths in my home but it came up with nothing. So guess the music library is saved somewhere else. I would like to run this in one step instead of having to adjust paths manually every time. Cheers, EL

How to force clean local storage for Photos.app?

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 07:55 PM PDT

I recently noticed that my photos Library is using over 50GB of storage space on my local storage on my MacBook Pro even though I have setup "iCloud Photos" with "Optimise Mac Storage" option selected on the device.

Is there any way to force clean the cached images on my local storage?

macOS wants to make changes. Enter an administrator's name and password to allow this

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 04:55 PM PDT

My macbook periodically asks for my password when waking up. It always looks like below and usually has a skype icon (but not always, i think). Is there a way to find what event is causing this using console.app? I've already tried some standard steps to reset the keychain.

Unicode character for Apple special keys?

What are the Unicode values for character representations of these symbols?

How to get Preview to ALWAYS open image in a new window

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 03:44 PM PDT

I have my Preview preferences set to open images in a new window. Before upgrading to Big Sur this worked unconditionally. Since switching to Big Sur this works for the first 15 windows, but after that, it starts opening them in an existing window. I can right click and open them in a new window, but it is really inconvenient. Can I tweak a setting somewhere, possibly from the command line, to be have Preview continue to open images in new windows?

Messed Up Permissions on Catalina

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 04:06 PM PDT

I am an on-and-off user of Sibelius, and the version I own turns out to be partially incompatible with Big Sur. Some months after upgrading to Big Sur, I decided that I wanted to use my version of Sibelius and have it work as intended. So I reinstalled Catalina. I figured I could migrate my Time Machine backup without issue, but Migration Assistant couldn't find it. So I dragged files I needed to my computer from my external drive manually. However, I found that there were permissions issues. For example, I tried editing a JS file in VS Code, and it wouldn't save, telling me it didn't have permission. It gave me the option to try with sudo, which I did, but that still didn't work. I've tried the following:

  • Using the Finder to try to recursively apply permissions to my user to Macintosh HD's contents (was told by a popup that I didn't have permissions).
  • diskutil disableOwnership on one of the volumes.
  • chmod -R
  • chown -R
  • sudo diskutil resetUserPermissions / id -u (with backticks)
  • Repairing permissions from the Terminal in Recovery Mode

Has anyone had an issue like this and found success with another option? I suppose that the reason I can't recursively apply permissions to the hard drive is that there are files within there that I don't have permissions for, even after clicking the little lock, but I'm at a loss with what to do after trying all of this stuff in the Terminal/Recovery Mode.

Moving an icon on the dock triggers "Keep in Dock", any way to prevent this?

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 09:20 PM PDT

If you 'right click' an icon on the dock > hover 'Options' > un-check "Keep in Dock" and proceed to drag the icon to move it, what happens is the "Keep in Dock" option becomes checked once again.

This is annoying because I do not want closed applications to be on my dock, yet I want to be able to organize my dock when application are open.

The issue was briefly mentioned in the comment section of this thread with no apparent solution.

Is it possible to disable this behavior?

Show window preview when switching windows of the SAME app

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 05:55 PM PDT

I've recently switched to MacOS from Ubuntu, and have been trying to replicate my usual keyboard shortcuts for window management. I'm using Command+` to switch between windows of the same app, but when doing so, I can't see which window I'm switching to until I've already made the switch!

In Ubuntu, it works a bit differently: it shows a preview of all open windows for the current application. See below: enter image description here Note the preview of each Terminal window. This allows me to CMD+` around until I find the window I'm looking for.

Is there any way to add this functionality to macOS?

What is causing Word to start selecting text while I type?

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 07:20 PM PDT

Periodically while typing in Word on a 2019 MacBook Pro, my keystrokes are captured by some sort of search mode that causes them to select text instead. In the example below, while I was typing "synonym", the letter "n" did not print to the screen, but caused the selection of text until the next "n" in the paragraph. Then when I typed the letter "p", the selection expanded to cover the next letter "p".

Image of selected text

What is making me enter this mode and causing Word to select text by itself like this? Is it related to brushing the touchpad somehow?

Update: This seems to happen especially when I type the letter "y". And it also happens in Outlook.

Cannot use software update "SoftwareUpdateNoticationManager quit unexpectedly", in MacOS 10.15.7 on macbook pro. Softwareupdate crashes everytime

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 06:17 PM PDT

About My Mac:

MacBook Pro 11,3 2014, MacOS Catalina macOS 10.15.7 (19H524)

Issues:

When trying to update MacOS Software using systempreferences or via the notification center Install popup I get 3 consistent error messages after a softwareupdate and system preferences crash.

  1. *com.apple.preferences.softwareupdate.remoteservice (System Preferences) quit unexpectedly.[com.apple.preferences.softwareupdate.remoteservice (System Preferences) quit unexpectedly1
  2. Preferences Error: There was an error in Software Update preferences. Preferences Error: There was an error in Software Update preferences MacOS Image
  3. SoftwareUpdateNotificationManager quit unexpectedly. SoftwareUpdateNotificationManager quit unexpectedly MacOS 10.15.7 error Problem Report for SoftwareUpdateNotificationManager

Things i've tried:

  1. Creating a new user account and trying software update. NOTE: THIS WORKS!. So the issue must be in the users home folder.
  2. Downloading and installing software updates via command line with in the malfunctioning user account via softwareupdate --install --all NOTE: THIS WORKS ALSO!
  3. Reinstalling MacOS on top of my currenct install without erasing MacintoshHD. This DOESN'T SOLVE THE ISSUE! ISSUE REMAINS PRESENT AFTER INSTALL!
  4. Backing up via Time-Machine, doing a full clean install, and then restoring from time maching. NOTE: THIS DOESN'T SOLVE THE ISSUE! ISSUE REMAINS AFTER CLEAN INSTALL AND RESTORE!

Issues that may have caused this:

  1. I read some post on a random mac forum about eliminating notifications for macOS software update. I entered a command that I am fairly certain modified a plist file for mac os. I don't know what command I used or what plist file it modified. I'm hoping it is just as easy as finding the plist file and removing it hoping mac os recreates a default plist file.

LOGS:

FULL LOG REPORT OF com.apple.preferences.softwareupdate.remoteservice (System Preferences) shared on pastebin

FULL LOG REPORT OF "SoftwareUpdateNotificationManager" shared on pastebin

My Question:

How can I fix this so that softwareupdate properly works on my current user account with my current mac os install?

When I try sending messages to certain destinations I get a "Not delivered" message

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 03:43 PM PDT

I have a friend I text many times a week. My iPhone 11 and my older iPad Pro will both deliver the messages fine. My newer iMac recently stopped delivering messages to him. It immediately gives me the "Not Delivered" message when I try.

Another address that has been receiving my messages for years will now not accept images of size 150K or other sizes. I have sent image files much bigger than this that has been sent to various sites with no problem.

I am running Big Sur 11.2.3

Things I have tried:

  1. Restart Computer.
  2. Sign out of Messages and back in.
  3. Searched Internet for solutions.

Most possible solutions were obviously not for Big Sur or didn't have the correct command.

How can I tell if all USB-C ports on a 2020 M1 MacBook Pro are the same speed, or if one or more will be faster than others?

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 03:39 PM PDT

I'm doing some heavy copying of files, and wish to do it via the fastest USB-C connection possible.

I tried holding option and clicking on the apple logo on the very top left, then going to System Information. From here on I'm guessing. I looked under 'Hardware' and see two areas of interest: 'Thunderbolt/USB4', and 'USB'. Does this automatically imply that one or more USB-C ports are faster than others?

Question

How exactly can I tell if one (or more) USB-C ports on a MacBook Pro offers faster speeds, and how can I easily know which that is?

How can I fix or back up a system after I use gparted to resize my drive and the system will not start?

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 11:04 PM PDT

I created an EFI to run Ubuntu on my mac it was working well but I didn't have enough space so I created a another partition in disk utility and then went to gparted and turned the new partition to un-allocated space, selected swapoff on my SwapSpace partition in order to move the un-allocated space next to my ubuntu partion.

Now I can no longer select macOS to boot and am exclusively stuck in linux. I don't know to much about this stuff and am really struggling.

Apple support says to erase everything but I have no backups.

My whole drive for my mac is still there and I can see it is taking up space. I just cant access it gparted screen

Is there a way to salvage the system or at least back things up now that my system will not boot?

How to fix broken text to speech rate on Big Sur

Posted: 20 Mar 2021 01:01 AM PDT

I'm on macOS 11.2 using a 16 inch 2019 MacBook Pro. I noticed when I use the text to speech functionality (system preferences > Accessibility > spoken content), the Siri voice doesn't adjust it's speech rate when using the slider (or the button on the popup controller). One thing I've noticed is that any other non-siri voice works. Furthermore, the voice was working till I reimaged my computer. Lastly, I have an older mid-2015 mac and it works just fine (even after I completely wiped it).

I tried to copy over some plist files from my old mac to see if I could get that to work, but that failed.

Any suggestions on how to fix the broken functionality?

GFortran compiler error on Mac OS Big Sur

I am trying to compile a hello world program in fortran on Mac OS Big Sur. Before updating everything worked fine.

Bootcamp error: Can’t install the software because it is not currently available from the Software Update server

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 06:03 PM PDT

Whenever I try to proceed with the bootcamp installation or click the download windows support software option from the action menu, it throws me that error.

I've googled this problem and made sure I have a strong wifi connection, plugged in my Macbook while doing this, am running the latest Catalina version and apart from the current windows 10 iso on the microsoft website, tried using older versions of windows 10. Nothing helped.

IPad app to annotate PDF without showing a toolbar

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 05:36 PM PDT

I want to find an iPad app that allows me to annotate a PDF with an Apple Pemcil while all the app's toolbars and navigation menus etc. are hidden.

Ideally, I would like to select an annotation tool (say a highlighter or pencil), hide the toolbars, and then just go through the document (a lecture that I am recording) occasionally highlighting or writing a few words here and there. I don't want the mostly-unused toolbars to clutter up each and every slide.

Apps like Notability and PDF Expert hide their toolbars while in "presentation mode", but ONLY when the content is being mirrored by HDMI or AirPlay, and not when connected to the Mac (doing the recording) by cable.

Basically, I want an PDF annotation app with a "presentation mode" equivalent that the user can choose to enter when they want, regardless of how the iPad is connected externally.

How do I drag a text box in Preview?

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 05:02 PM PDT

When using Preview, I can create a text box to add text on top of a PDF. However, the text box is not always created in the correct area. I find that I can use the Arrow Keys to move the text box. Or, I can stretch the text box with my mouse and pointer. However, I cannot move the text box using my mouse. What am I missing? How do I do that?

Apple's reference says, "To move the text box, just drag it." But, I haven't figured out how to do that.

Thunderbolt cable that only works as USB 3.1

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 10:02 PM PDT

I have an LG 5k Ultrafine screen which does not work when connected to my Macbook Pro 2018. Before thinking that the screen may not be working, it could be that the cable which isn't working.

In order for it to work, it must be a Thunderbolt 3 cable, which I know it is (I bought it and it used to work with the screen). I plugged the cable Macbook <> Different USB-C device and it did work, however it Apple -> About this Mac -> System Report, the device only gets shown in the USB 3.1 bus instead of the Thunderbolt section.

Are there ways to test if the cable that I have is a working Thunderbolt 3 cable?

how do I get 1080p resolution when screen recording an iPad Pro?

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 09:24 PM PDT

I have an iPad Pro 10.5 inch with an advertised resolution of "2224 × 1668 px". However, when I do a screen recording using Quicktime Player of the iPad, I get a much lower resolution. How do I get at least a 1080p resolution?

Caldigit TS3 Plus, Ethernet slot always showing cable unplugged, my OS Catalina

Posted: 20 Mar 2021 12:02 AM PDT

I purchased Caldigit TS3 Plus today and try to use it's network function on my 2018 mbp. Ethernet slot always showing cable unplugged.

I confirm my network is normal (I connected this cable to other computer and it works).

Tried below procedures but not working. A. Restart B. Download official drive from Caldigit (though not necessary),installed and restarted C. In network setting, hardware, set it to be manually according to some googled articles

I am supposing is it possible that not compatible with new OS Catalina? What can I do now?

Prevent Mac to sleep when lid closed on Mojave / Catalina

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 06:42 PM PDT

So I saw a lots of old discussion on this topic, but I'm trying to find out an actual solution that still works on Mojave / Catalina, without the use of external monitor/keyboard/mouse/with power adapter.

When looking up Amphetamine, they claimed that you can only do it when the 4 criteria are met, and cannot overridden it.

Amphetamine

But on the other hands, Anti Sleep provide the feature in their pro version...

enter image description here

So, which one gets the real deal ? Is Anti Sleep lying about it or Amphetamine (and all other caffeine app on the appStore) is out of date ?

I also heard about InsomniaX and built-in caffeine but it's really not user friendly, and appear not to be supported anymore...

iDrive backup for Mac failing

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 04:00 PM PDT

I got a message from my Mac IDrive app that there has been no backup for four days. The message says the most common cause is the Mac being turned off, but my Mac is always on and connected. IDrive has been working fine for months.

IDrive support suggested that I upgrade to version 3.5.1.5 but that's what I have, and they haven't responded further. There's no clue in the logs; it just says "Backup operation failed" at the end after listing files for backup. I Have paid for a years service.

Is there a way to troubleshoot this other than requesting another support ticket?

Default Bash 3 overriding shebang /bin/bash with brew installed bash 4

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 08:14 PM PDT

Background

Bash 4 installed successfully using homebrew and the additional steps required to make bash 4 your default shell. Many guides on the net with a simple google: Example Bash 4 upgrade guide for Mac

  • Bash 4.x (installed via brew) location: /usr/local/bin/bash
  • Bash 3.2 (Default OSX) location: /bin/bash

Problem

Scripts I can not control/modify the shebang, as it would affect other users. Unless I was to manually change and then revert before committing to source control. Another option is to type: bash some_script_with_bin_bash_shebang.shto force the use of the newly defaulted bash 4 shell.

I only ever need to do this for Bash 4+ functionality, which is very common now.

Question

Does anyone have a cool technique, workarounds to alias a shebang bash path like so: #!/bin/bash to the newer bash 4 shell at /usr/local/bin/bash?

Without obviously modifying the file! ^_^ (e.g. adding #!/usr/bin/env bash)

Is Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 (type C) possible?

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 07:16 PM PDT

Apple released Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. Is it possible to connect an external device using type C (ie ASUS MB169B+) by connecting the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter with an Thunderbolt cable into the Mac (this is an older Mac before 2015)?

Can the MacBook (which only supports Thunderbolt 2) fully access the device which supports type C? The transmission traffic still won't compare with the real Thunderbolt 3 speeds but at least the Thunderbolt 2 ports are not useless!

How do you force OS X to re-detect displays?

Posted: 19 Mar 2021 04:50 PM PDT

I use my MacBook at work and at home. Whenever I switch between work and home, every now and again I get bug whereby the Mac thinks an external monitor is still plugged in, even if it's not.

This means when I go to plug in either my work or home monitors, one of them doesn't work as OS X still thinks there is a different monitor plugged in.

The only way I've been able to fix this is to restart, but I was hoping there was a quick way to fix this through a terminal command or something.

Note that System Preferences > Displays > Option + Detect Displays does not work.
