Macbook Pro gets slow frequently when connected to external monitor via HDMI cable

Posted: 22 Mar 2021 01:09 AM PDT

Hi I have a Macbook Pro (2019). Both my laptop and external monitor is getting slow frequently when i connect to a LG 4k external monitor. I am using typec to Hdmi adpater to connect to monitor.

My Laptop details: enter image description here

Also when this happens videos are getting pixelated (can be seen in the below image). enter image description here

All I can see is that my kernal_task is consuming too much cpu but not sure why this is happening. enter image description here

I have took some screenshots of temperatures from tg_pro app when this issue occurred, and it seems fine. enter image description here enter image description here

Any Idea, How I can fix the issue?

Permission denied when trying to generate ssh key on Mac?

Posted: 22 Mar 2021 01:08 AM PDT

I've changed X11Forwarding in my sshd_config to "yes" and uncommented it. I've installed XQuartz.

But when I run the following command:ssh-keygen -t rsa -f~/.ssh/my_key -C shisui I get "Saving key "~/.ssh/my_key" failed: No such file or directory"

So I moved into my ~./ssh directory and ran the following command. ssh-keygen -t rsa -f my_key -C shisui. And I get "Saving key "my_key" failed: Permission denied"

I've checked my permissions using ls -ld ~/.ssh and I get drwx------ 3 shisui staff 96 Jan 24 2020 /Users/shisui/.ssh so I think my permissions are right.

I also tried the top rated approach from here https://stackoverflow.com/questions/47805504/mac-os-error-when-generating-an-ssh-key-with-git-no-such-file where you don't specify the file until prompted. Still no good.

I would really really appreciate any insight on this. Thanks in advance

Boot Camp Windows 10 keeps disconnecting my USB mouse and keyboard

Posted: 22 Mar 2021 12:43 AM PDT

I recently downloaded Windows 10 on my 2016 MacBook Pro 13 inch using Boot Camp. My RK61 Bluetooth mechanical keyboard and my usb mouse works fine when I'm operating on macOS. But when I switch to Windows 10, my mouse and keyboard says that it's connected, but my mouse will disconnect randomly and become unresponsive.

I have a 3.0 USB Type C Hub: https://www.amazon.com/Hiearcool-MacBook-Multiport-Compatible-Nintendo/dp/B07WPTG7NX/

I'm not sure why this keeps happening. I know that that my mouse isn't defective, since I've connected it to another laptop and it works perfectly fine without any glitches. I've also gone into my device manager on Windows 10 to turn off power saving options for USB. I also tried uninstalling the device as well as updating the driver.

Get directions by nickname in Siri

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 09:17 PM PDT

Asking Siri to get Maps directions to someone's address, is it possible somehow to refer to the relevant contact by its nickname (as its defined in the Contacts app) instead of by long first and last name combination?

That is,

Hi Siri, show me directions to Rob

Instead of

Hi Siri, show me directions to Robert Pattinson

I am asking specifically to iOS but an answer for MacOS is also appreciated

How do I make my cursor return to its normal size?

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 09:23 PM PDT

Apparently because of either some BetterTouchTool shortcut or bug1 I have a gigantic mouse cursor, and I can't reverse it. BetterTouchTool has the option to toggle the cursor size, but instead of going back and forth between normal and larger, it just gets larger and larger and larger. This is driving me crazy and can only be fixed by rebooting, as far as I know.

I need some way of restoring the mouse cursor to its original dimensions. How can I do this?

1 In the past I used BTT's ability to toggle mouse cursor size to visually signal that my shortcuts were working. But now something is doing that without my knowledge or consent.

I've searched through all of my BetterTouchTool shortcuts and I can't find one causing the problem, so it may be a bug in the software itself, or it may be a result of a combination of lacking a good enough search engine and me somehow overlooking it.

All my games installed on second drive, now can’t get Steam to recognize them

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 06:07 PM PDT

So I was running out of room on my first drive (C), so I installed a second drive (2tb NVME), named it "M", and went into Steam and moved my game installs all over to M. I thought I was moving them all to a folder I made called "games", but upon second look it seems that only the icons were moved there. However all the games seem to now be in a folder called "SteamLibrary". So that's good, I still have all the game installs.

I uninstalled Steam (and SteamVR), and reinstalled them - I was hoping to install Steam on M, but I think they installed back on C, because now on C, under ProgramFilesx86 I have:

- "Steam" folder - within it "config", "logs, and "steam"

On M, I have:

- "Steam" folder - Within it, too many folders to type out here, including another "steamapps" folder - "Steam Backups" folder - "steamapps" folder (yes, a third one..) - "SteamLibrary" folder - Within it, all my game installs

In Steam settings -> downloads -> Steam Library Folders, it's set at M:\Steam. I tried to add the folder "M:\SteamLibrary", but I get a message that the selected drive already has a Steam library folder. Steam will manage multiple game installs in a single folder for you."

I'm not sure what to do here. I have all my games installed in M:\SteamLibrary, but for the life of me I can't get Steam to recognize them there.

Please if anyone knows how I can get this sorted I'll be so grateful! Thanks in advance for any help!

M1 MacBook External Display Scaling

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 05:30 PM PDT

I just purchased an M1 MacBook Air that I would like to attach to an external display. When I do so, the video quality is pretty terrible. It almost looks like the the output is being slightly scaled. However, I've verified from my monitor's OSD that it is outputting to the correct resolution as well as from MacOS. There isn't any oversampling or other scaling effects from the monitor (it's outputting 1:1). Just as a sanity check, I took a screenshot and it outputs the correct resolution and looks beautiful on another computer attached to the same display. I've tried various output cables (USB-C to DP and HDMI) and this doesn't seem to have any effect. I've read elsewhere that there can be some colorspace issues on Dell monitors in particular, but this isn't a Dell monitor and it really doesn't appear to be the issue.

MacBook Pro 15" (Mid 2012) won't connect to a specific wifi network

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 04:45 PM PDT

Recently installed fibre optic (in the UK), and I can connect my MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2012. I can connect to my old wifi network on the MacBook Pro.

The strange thing is I can connect to my new network on my phone and MacBook Air, as well as other devices.

Any ideas what is happening?

Spotlight crashing on `1` and only `1`

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 04:43 PM PDT

I have a really weird spotlight problem and it is driving me insane.

When I open the spotlight search and type 1 the search box disappears as if it crashed. For example, if I intended to search for 1password, typing 1 will cause the box to disappear. However, if I type pass it works fine and finds the "1Password" app.

As far as I can tell this is the only character that triggers the crash.

I already tried the "disable indexing of bookmarks and history" fix and it doesn't help.

Is there some way to delete the spotlight index? Maybe that will help?

Any other clues I should look for?

I am on BigSur, but this also happened on Catalina, I was hoping the upgrade would fix it... but it did not. :(

iCloud Contacts and iPhone Contacts show different birthdays!

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 04:00 PM PDT

tl;dr;

Supposedly-synchronized Contacts on iCloud and on my iPhone seem to have serious differences. How can I avoid this?

Background: I have extremely little Apple experience. I've been on Android forever and am trying to switch, but am frustrated at nearly every turn.

I exported all my carefully-maintained Google contacts to a .VCF file and imported them into the web iCloud interface. The intent was to do this one time and abandon Google Contacts forever. The new iCloud contacts seemed to be okay on the web interface, except it said something like "20 of your contacts couldn't be imported". I couldn't figure out which ones, nor why they didn't import. (So any help there would be great.) Then, later when it synced with my new iPhone, I noticed some of the fields didn't import properly. For many of the contacts, their birthday became "February 7, 506713" on the iPhone. Others simply don't have the birthday field when they should have. I looked at the source VCF file, and everything looked correct there. I looked on iCloud web interface Contacts, and the "February 7, 506713" birthdays were correct there.

Searching the web for answers didn't seem to help. I found many folks have an off-by-one (or two) days issue with synchronized dates. I think I am also seeing this issue, as my wife's birthday is moved two days earlier and called our "Anniversary". This is seriously aggravating.

I want to just import all my contacts and work correctly. I don't want to go through many hundreds of contacts by hand to verify every field. Any suggestions help. How do I overcome iCloud showing the right date and iPhone showing "February 7, 506713"?

It's a fully-upgraded (as best I can tell) iPhone 12.

Numbers app on iPhone not syncing with iCloud

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 08:29 PM PDT

tl;dr;

It appears Numbers documents I create on the iCloud web interface do not populate to my new iPhone. Numbers documents I create on the iPhone will show up on the web iCloud interface. Why doesn't it sync the other direction?

Background: I have extremely little Apple experience. I've been on Android forever and am trying to switch, but am frustrated at nearly every turn. I've tried to take a Google Sheets document I had available on both sheets.google.com and my Android and move it to Numbers so I can use it both from my iPhone and the iCloud web interface. I've updated the formulas on the web interface and it functions just fine, but the iPhone won't see it. Can you help me? I think all the settings are correct to allow for syncing.

Notes created on iCloud seem to sync just fine. Numbers documents do not. Why?

It's a fully-upgraded (as best I can tell) iPhone 12.

Awk/Gawk not working after install gawk on M1

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 05:22 PM PDT

Using brew, I installed gawk on my m1. upon doing so, awk does not work. Before install gawk:

❯ awk -version awk version 20200816 ❯ which awk /usr/bin/awk

Then I install gawk and add the path to the binary to my $PATH

==> Downloading https://homebrew.bintray.com/bottles/gawk-5.1.0.arm64_big_sur.bo  Already downloaded: /Users/jtsmith/Library/Caches/Homebrew/downloads/78854a178070158dd17ca1789b20ecabe69f924bad7052337c019a8efeb30178--gawk-5.1.0.arm64_big_sur.bottle.tar.gz  ==> Pouring gawk-5.1.0.arm64_big_sur.bottle.tar.gz  🍺  /opt/homebrew/Cellar/gawk/5.1.0: 90 files, 5.4MB    ❯ which awk  /opt/homebrew/Cellar/gawk/5.1.0/bin/awk

Now, if I try to use awk/gawk, it always results in a killed

❯ awk -version [1] 10790 killed awk -version ❯ gawk -version [1] 10796 killed gawk -version ❯ echo "test test" | awk '{ gsub(/ /,""); print $0}'; [1] 10800 done echo "test test" | 10801 killed awk '{ gsub(/ /,""); print $0}'

I assume they are clashing but can't figure out what's going on.

tcsh filename globbing broken?

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 11:51 PM PDT

'[3-4]' expands as if I had asked for '[0-4]'. This occurs with letters as well:

ls file_0 file_1 file_2 file_3 file_a file_b file_c ls file_[2-3] file_0 file_1 file_2 file_3 ls file_[b-c] file_0 file_1 file_2 file_3 file_a file_b file_c

Enumerations work as expected:

ls file_[2bc] file_2 file_b file_c

Is this a known bug or have I suddenly been teleported to an alternate universe? Do you see this on your system (csh or tcsh)? Is it fixed in tcsh 6.22 ? Thanks!

How to continue Time Machine backups from a previous computer?

Posted: 22 Mar 2021 12:28 AM PDT

I had MBP 2015 in the past and used Time Machine on it. Last September, I switched to MBP 16'' 2019 and did a fresh installation / manual copy of most of my home directory files, maintaining the layout.

Note: I wanted to do a fresh installation for various reasons but if I were to compare the filesystems in the end, they are almost the same – my home directory is still /Users/borekb, the folder layout under it is exactly the same, etc.

Now I'm trying to set up Time Machine again but I'd like to continue with my previous line of backups – for example, I want to see last year's versions of files that are on the same path. Also, my first backup on this new Mac should be "incremental" – I'd like Time Machine to compare what is on my current Mac with the latest state of my previous backups (from September 2020) and does a diff as usual.

The key to this seems to be the tmutil inheritbackup command, which I've successfully ran:

$ sudo tmutil inheritbackup /Volumes/time-machine/Borek's\ MacBook\ Pro.backupbundle Password: Mounting disk image... Unmounting disk image... Inheriting disk image for machine... Successfully inherited disk image '/Volumes/time-machine/Borek's MBP 16.backupbundle'

/Volumes/time-machine is a mounted network folder (I backup wirelessly to a Synology NAS) and the command seemed to work well – it did this rename:

Borek's MacBook Pro.backupbundleBorek's MBP 16.backupbundle

I then went to Time Machine UI, selected the time-machine disk, entered my previous password for encryption, etc.:

Everything seemed fine so far.

However, when I start backing up, it does a full initial backup to a new folder inside the .backupbundle that is called after my new computer's name: Borek's MBP 16. This is what it looks like after I mount the sparse bundle and browse the /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb folder:

I somehow want to tell Time Machine keep using the original Borek's MacBook Pro folder (the one that was last modified on 22 Sep 2020).

How to do that?

UPDATE 1: I tried changing my computer's name to match the old one but Time Machine still insists on creating a new set of backups from scratch – it just calls the new "machine directory" Borek's MacBook Pro 2:

I have also ran this script, found here (as Big Sur doesn't seem to support -a), to run tmutil associatedisk an all folders found under the original backup location:

for f in /Volumes/Time\ Machine\ Backups/Backups.backupdb/Borek's\ MacBook\ Pro/*; do if [[ -d "$f" ]]; then sudo tmutil associatedisk /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD "$f"/Macintosh\ HD; fi; done

This also worked correctly but Time Machine still doesn't see my older backups and is attempting to create Borek's MacBook Pro 2 when I try to run a backup.

UPDATE 2: I've successfully verified backups which was a solution in this answer. The preferences UI still report "no backups" so I'm now trying to run a new backup, which was Step 2 in that answer and the author wasn't sure if it's necessary or not. I'll report back in a few hours...

Can BTT detect mouse cursor moved to different monitor on another computer via Synergy?

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 11:26 PM PDT

I am using the BetterTouchTool and I have a question about that.

Actually, I would like to run some shell script to change some of the key mappings on another computer. So can BTT detect mouse cursor moved to a different monitor on another computer via Synergy?

The Synergy app allows sharing a mouse and keyboard across computers. Synergy software shares one mouse & one keyboard between multiple computers & monitors. Easy download, install & configuration. A Symless product.

My synergy setup: Mac (2019 late, Big Sur) as a server, Linux (CentOS 7) as a remote client.

Thanks,

Arsene

What exactly is chflags opaque, nodump?

MacOS timed won't keep accurate time

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 08:04 PM PDT

My MacBook Pro (13-inch, 2016, Four Thunderbolt 3 Ports, 16GB) running Big Sur 11.1 won't keep accurate time. It's regularly up to a minute off. I verified this using:

I've tried sntp -sS time.apple.com, and it doesn't adjust the time. I'd expect it to step to the right time, given we're (way!) more than 50ms off.

I've tried turning off automatic time sync in the system preferences, then setting the time right by hand, then turning automatic sync back on and it puts the clock back to the wrong time!

I've tried killing timed - it's restarted and the time remains wrong.

I've tried removing /var/db/timed/com.apple.timed.plist and then restarting timed. It recreates the file and the time remains wrong.

Reading this question, I checked the contents of the plist file, but mine doesn't appear to have any store of the current offset:

# plutil -p com.apple.timed.plist  {    "BootUUID" => "<redacted>"    "HostUUID" => "<redacted>"    "RTCResetCount" => 0    "TMLastNtpFetchAttempt" => 5331203.310338818    "TMLastRtcTime" => 5331203.336288487    "TMSystemTimeSet" => 0    "TMTimeSynthesizer" => {length = 499, bytes = 0x62706c69 73743030 d4010203 04050607 ... 00000000 00000179 }    "TMVersionKey" => 17  }

No mention of TMLastSystemTime or TMTimeError.

I'm at my wits end with this. It's a real problem because it often prevents me using 1Password-generated TOTP codes because the drift is so bad.

Any ideas, please?

Perform an action when bluetooth keyboard is connected or disconnected

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 08:02 PM PDT

I am trying to write a script that can detect when a bluetooth keyboard is connected or disconnected from my mac and perform an action. The keyboard is a Logitech MX but I don't want my script to be dependent of that.

I can use bash, applescript, C, or any other language that can be called/binded to node.js

The message "You do not have permission to open the application" is shown when trying to open a downloaded app

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 03:24 PM PDT

This seems to be a new issue with Big Sur.

I have "App Store and identified developers" enabled in Security & Privacy, but I've run into a certain app outside the App Store that seems like it doesn't fall under the category of "identified developers".

When I try to open the app, it tells me "You do not have permission to open the application". Going into Terminal, however, I can see executable permissions are enabled for the app, just like for every other app.

What can I do to be able to open the app?

WindowServer High CPU using external monitor - Big Sur

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 02:36 PM PDT

So, few bits of context

  • I've got a MacBook 12" from 2017
  • It's connected to an external monitor via USB-C to a Satechi V2 dongle and then HDMI to the monitor

I'm experiencing a few things:

  1. Stuttering when I move windows (like dropping frames)
  2. Videos stutter when my mouse pointer is in motion
  3. WindowServer in Activity Monitor shoots through the roof of CPU usage when I move my mouse a lot
  4. The above is accompanied by the beach ball

See screenshot Activity monitor with high Window Server CPU usage

I've had a bit of a speedup by disabling "Displays have seperate spaces" in the System Preferences, but it's still happening. It's also slowing down game animations as when my mouse it moving, games won't animate.

Any thoughts?

Make zoom use system proxy

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 06:53 PM PDT

I'm in China, and Zoom on my Mac often gets stuck because of unstable connection to Zoom server. I have a http(s) proxy that works great (I get 0% packet loss with this proxy, and 30%-40% otherwise). However, Zoom usually ignores the proxy.

Can I force Zoom to use the http(s) proxy configured in "Network Preferences" panel?

Endless stream of "Suspicious packet count xxx when bytes xxx for flow xxxx" followed by "Flow details for excess packet count <private>" in Console

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 05:01 PM PDT

I have a 2018 MacBook Air Retina. Fresh reinstall of macOS Catalina (10.15.5). Nothing installed except apple numbers, pages and google chrome. After a few hours, after noticing that on idle the fans are spinning at maximim, I opened Console.

In "Errors" I have an endless stream of "error 09:41:36.901853+0300 symptomsd Suspicious packet count 121 when bytes 968 for flow 7434"

and

"error 09:45:08.399365+0300 symptomsd Flow details for excess packet count "

If I check Network Utility I see that the packages are sent via the Ethernet network interface.

And this goes on forever, and my macbook is getting really hot and slow, to the point I can't use it anymore. This continues even after I turn off wifi. I did SMC and NVRAM resets, nothing.

Catalina: Purpose of /System/Volumes/Data/Previous Content/?

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 03:02 PM PDT

After the update from Mojave to Catalina I noticed that the used disk space has increased from about 1TB to almost 2TB. And there is hardly any free disk space left.

A closer inspection of the file structure of the whole system shows that about half of the data is in the folder /System/Volumes/Data/Previous Content/Users/myusername. It seems to be a mirror of my user data that was created during the upgrade. This would explain the sudden doubling of the disk space used.

I can't find any clear information about the purpose of the folder /System/Volumes/Data/Previous Content/Users/ neither here in the forum nor on the web. Is it possible that after upgrading and setting up all user data from the backup, the contents of the folder /System/Volumes/Data/Previous Content/Users/ can be deleted without problems? Since it does not seem to be necessary for the operation of Catalina?

(Note: this question is not about the general purpose of the APFS partition /System/Volumes/Data/ of the new APFS)

iPhone stuck "Removing iCloud Data..." after iCloud sign out

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 10:27 PM PDT

I have an iPhone 5C and have logged out of iCloud (in order to test in App Purchasing on an App under development).

The 'phone indicated "Removing iCloud data...", which seems reasonable, but it has been stuck like that for around 30 minutes now, which does not. There is not that much iCloud data on the 'phone.

Pressing Home closes settings and other apps can be run. But the logout process does not appear to be complete as the In App Purchase test does not ask for an account name, just a password. Reopening Settings just brings back the "Removing iCloud data..." indication.

Any thoughts?

Low CPU usage when performing big task in java

Posted: 21 Mar 2021 04:03 PM PDT

I recently got mac mini and I'm new to OS X so maybe this is a trivial question. I'm developing web application in java using Spring. I have another project to run IT tests which sets up the API and performs lots of testing.

Tests take ~6 minutes on Linux and Windows (and when this is first thing i do after restarting my mac). When i run them on my mac they take very long time (~30 mins and go on) I notice in Activity Monitor that CPU is 90% idle after the API has started and tests begin to execute. Java processes uses ~0.5% of CPU. There is still ~7 GB memory free.

Running this on other environments (e.g. Linux) usually takes most of available resources (almost 100% CPU usage and memory)

Can somebody help me resolve this issue? Does OS X have any limitation regarding CPU usage for java processes?

I can provide more informations but need to know where to look.
