Why Other storage keeps increasing when I don't download anything on this laptop

I cleaned my Macbook Pro about 2 months ago, I deleted plenty of non useful files and junk and I made about 100 gb free.

After this I use this laptop only for browsing web, watch youtube and write some code on my personal project (rarely), but Other storage keeps increasing day by day, I don't understand what is using the space and where it comes from, I'm getting crazy about it.

I don't want to go through hundreds of folders and guess what is useful and what can be deleted again, It will waste considerable amount of my time, so what might be the solution here?

How do I check the memory usage from a certain time in macOs?

I had a website which was using massive amounts of memory on my MacBook but I was unable to take a screenshot of the total memory usage from Activity Monitor to file an issue with the website. Is there any way I can see the log of the Activity Monitor from a specific time?

Whenever I add an mp3 to garageband it either pitches it up SUPER high or SUPER low. Fix?

Also, this only happens to vocals that I import. I can record some and it won't glitch, and also when it pitches up it gets faster than the instrumental of the song, and when it pitches down it gets slower. Trying to make a mashup but it's hard because of this! If you need more info please ask. Also, if I add two vocals (different songs) and two instrumentals (same songs as before) it bugs out and makes the instrumentals the same and the acapellas the same.

How to reclaim deleted MacOS partition or Container

So a little of background and I have doing research many page but have not found the solution yet.

  • I tried out Boot Camp Assistant to install Windows 10 on my MacBook. Then I accidentally deleted the MacOS Partition (350GB) after booting in Windows 10.
  • After that I could not boot into the MacOS. I boot to Internet Recovery and reinstall the new Mac OS in another partition (150GB). (I did not have any Time Machine saving on the old OS)

Here is my Disk Utility screenshots.

Total is 500 GB

You can see that 350GB partition is nowhere to be found.

I have tried many tools (Disk Drill, DiskTest, Hetman, Recoverit, ...) to recover the deleted Partition or data from the deleted partition but the only data showed up was system data like "Apple manual PDFs" or "system mp3 sound".

I do think the old OS data is still there after research on many forums but have no luck so far.

Please help if anyone have got into this problem and found the solution. I really don't want to lose those data.

Traffic of different Apps in Little Snitch with enabled VPN? What is the meaning?

So, I am trying to understand my VPN connection observing the traffic in Little Snitch. My VPN is connected and I can see its connection to the server and the amount of data that is transfered. Shouldn't go all my data through this connection? Why is there, for example Firefox, connecting to a huge amount of IP-Adresses and sending/receiving a huge amount of data? When observing the map it looks like the connections start at my 'real location'. I looked up my IP on the browser and everything seems to be working fine.

Just wanted to understand the causal chain of data flow for Example googling something in Firefox.

I'm familiar with long-pressing on Apple Maps on iPhone to drop a pin and then getting directions to that location. Is it possible to long press on Apple Maps screen in CarPlay to a drop a pin?

How does macOS detect keyboard? How to manually add a new keyboard?

I have new keyboard, Logitech MX Keys, 920-009416 = US ISO. Logitech MX Keys

The keyboard works well, out of box, on Windows 10 and Linux, Manjaro. On macOS there is issue with it.

After plugin on macOS, app Keyboard Setup Assistant opens and try detect my keyboard. The main problem is with keys: tilde~ on the left side of 1 and backslash \ near to z. According to the documentation:

If you are a Windows, Linux and Android user, the special characters will be on the right side of the key:

If you are a macOS or iOS user, the special characters and keys will be on the left side of the keys:

but I want to use tilde to the left of key 1, so I want to use windows/linux layout. After many attempts with the Assistant, I wasn't able to generate the correct configuration:

I had to help myself Karabiner-Elements and map the keys: grave_accent_and_tilde(`) with non_us_backslash.

I tried to find out what the code in /Library/Preferences/com.apple.keyboardtype.plist means, but I failed. At first Karabiner could see the keyboard but it was grayed out and I couldn't map keys for it.

The second problem is with adding a new keyboard, new dongle. After this, when I use Keyboard Setup Assistant, the file /Library/Preferences/com.apple.keyboardtype.plist is changing and I have the problem again. I don't know why.

Is it possible to use the same layout as under Windows/Linux? How to manually add a keyboard? What does the keys layout depend on, §|` and `|\ ?

On Linux, xev returns for left-upper tilde:

Stop macOS VNC server from rendering remote cursor

Currently running macOS 11.2.3, and noticed that the system VNC server (enabled in System Preference -> Screen Sharing) always includes the cursor in the images sent to the client, causing a shadowed cursor on the client side. And the behavior is the same no matter if I use the Screen Sharing as the client on another Mac, or some third party VNC viewers on PC. While the Vine VNC Server does not have this issue and works perfectly.

So I wonder if there is a way to stop the system default VNC server from rendering the cursor of the remote machine. I have heard the rumors that the $80 Apple Remote Desktop can somehow configure this, but I haven't yet made the investment. Can someone confirm?

Connecting Asus ZenScreen MBC16 to Mid-2015 MacBook Pro

I bought this nifty Asus ZenScreen to have a second monitor on the go. What could go wrong, right? Well, everything it seems. I am running High Sierra (10.13.6). The ZenScreen takes USB-C input with only one port. The first attempt was to connect via the USB side by downloading the DisplayLink UserAgent 4.3.1 driver. It seems that Apple doesn't want us to do that for some reason? I can connect and it will display a picture- but only a static one. As in, if I have a video playing, only a still image appears, and clicking in that extended desktop will only update to that next snapshot. (A video of this can be provided if need be.)

Next, I tried HDMI to USB-C. And learned that HDMI does not provide power.

Third, I purchased the seemingly overpriced Thunderbolt Cable and USB-C adapter, as the internet informed me that Thunderbolt does in fact provide power. Still no avail.

Now I have a lovely paperweight and several cords that I don't need to boot. Any thoughts?

Any data on Big Sur market share? [closed]

I can't find any data on Big Sur market share among Mac versions.

The only source that covers this is https://gs.statcounter.com/macos-version-market-share/desktop/worldwide

However on that source there is no data for Big Sur - if you download .csv you will see that all values add up to 100% and there is no 'Big Sur' or 'Other' category. I would assume that Big Sur has similar to what Catalina had in this period of year (41%) and that all other values should be corrected by multiplying with 59%.

But that is just a guess. Does anyone have any data? Including from his own site if nothing else just if it has at least 1k Mac users a month?

Black rectangles in menu bar that randomly appear

I recently purchased a MacBook Air M1 and it runs the latest OS version. I noticed that sometimes there is a black rectangle in the menu bar. I have attached two screen shots. I am now worried if this is a known software bug or if my device has a defect. I have not been able to find the problem on the internet. Should I replace my device? The size of the rectangle is changing in size.

Help Installing Wine Mono

I installed Wine Mono from its Git page (by git clone), their README file says

To build Wine Mono, use the msi or bin target.

$ make msi

So I go to the directory (cd) then do make msi it outputs:

GNUmakefile:54: *** 'wine' command not found. Please install wine or specify its location in the WINE variable.  Stop.

so I follow the other option make bin

so I try make /bin, and the sane happens.

Am I doing something wrong, also I may not have one of the dependencies, I do not know what are

  • libgdiplus, to support Mono's resource compiler.
  • The dos2unix command.

And I use a macOS 10.15.7 so I may not have (I don't know what is autotools, and I can install CMake again if required)

  • All of the dependencies of Mono for your native (presumably Linux) system, such as autotools, CMake and a C++ compiler.

EDIT: It also throws errors about libgnutls, like this:

How do I create an "artificial" redirect on iPad?

I have a webserver running under the 0.0.0.0 address, bound to a given port - let's call it 8080. By using 0.0.0.0 as the host address, I can successfully access my webserver from the iPad using my computer's network IP (192.168.100.5).

Turns out my server has some redirections pointing to 0.0.0.0:port, and 0.0.0.0 is unknown to my iPad. One idea I had is to make the iPad interpret 0.0.0.0 as 192.168.100.5, but after some thorough research, I couldn't find successful answers on how to do that.

So here I am: how can I make an iPad, using Safari, to interpret 0.0.0.0 as 192.168.100.5?

A parallel example would be, every time I access http://whatever, I'd like my browser (Safari) to access https://google.com or something.

Why a downloaded app can write to ~/Downloads/ without requiring the privacy allow permission in Big Sur?

In MacOS Big Sur, I figured out an app (downloaded from internet) normally can not access ~/Downloads/, ~/Documents/, ~/Desktop/ folders directly. When it tries to access those folders at the first time, there will be a popup window to ask for permission and the permission can be setup in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Files and Folders.

Edited: It seems my bad description makes people confused (sorry about my English). I will put two screenshots here to clarify what I mean:

The above screenshot appears when the app iTerm2 tries to access ~/Downloads folder at the first time in Big Sur. (basically when I execute ls ~/Downloads/ commands in iTerm2)

The above screenshot is where I can change the folders privacy setup.

But, today, I downloaded an app (it's a downloading tool) and installed it by dragging it to /Applications folder. (the same way I installed iTerm2) I tried to use that tool to download a file to ~/Downloads folder and the file can be downloaded and written to ~/Downloads folder directly without any permission requirement. I checked the Privacy setup in System Preferences and it does NOT have that app setup too.

I am very confused how can that app write the file to ~/Downloads without requiring a privacy permission on the protected folder. I thought those protected folders were protected and were not allowed to be read/write before granting privacy permission. But I was wrong. (Note that, later I found out Google Chrome App can read/write those protected folders too without asking this privacy permission)

PS1: I haven't mentioned the "downloading tool app" name here because that is a non-English app. If anyone consider I should give the name to get a better help, just let me know. Thanks.

PS2: This is a fresh install of MacOS Big Sur. (Not a upgraded system)

PS3: The "downloading tool app" is a GUI app. (NOT a CML app).

PS4: I just find out the Google Chrome.app downloaded from https://chrome.google.com can write to (save file to) ~/Downloads/ folder directly without requiring any privacy permission too. This is weird. Why does iTerm, Code and VLC require privacy permission to do any read/write to those protected folders but google chrome does NOT need to require anything.

Cannot access directories over SMB (permissions error)

I am unable to access directories like ~/Documents, ~/Downloads, or ~/Desktop via SMB — the SB share on which they exist can be accessed, but not the directories themselves (trying to browse them gives permissions errors)

In Console.app, I have (for kernel), e.g.,

System Policy: smbd(7706) deny(1) file-read-data /Users/alex/Documents

This appears when I try to access ~/Documents.

How can I fix this so ~/Documents and similar dirs are accessible via SMB?

Do I need the Developer Program to sign an app for my own use?

I installed iTerm2 from MacPorts; since it was built from source, it wasn't notarized. If I want to sign it for my own usage (not distributing any app), do I need to (pay $99 and) join the Developer Program? I have not joined the program, but apparently there is a local certificate with name "Apple Development:" followed by my Apple ID. Can I use that to sign? I tried

codesign --force --sign 'Apple Development: foo@example.com' /Applications/MacPorts/iTerm2.app

and saw error message:

The reason I want to sign iTerm2 is that unsigned version can't run osascript to control another application. To verify:

osascript -e 'tell application "Finder" to display dialog "hello!"'

With unsigned iTerm2 I got authorization error (-1743). (Of course I intended to use OSA for more complicated automation.)

burning a multi-session cd into iso

I have a multi-session (osx/windows) cd that I'd like to create an iso from. Is there a way to create a single iso file with all the sessions included in it?

How do you "select-all" in Apple Calendar (iCal)?

I use my calendar like a scheduled to-do list. I sometimes want to shift all today's events down by 15 minutes. Select All is grayed out in the Edit menu, and it's tedious to click on every event while holding shift.

How do you select all events on a particular day? If there isn't a way, is there a workaround?

Macbook Pro fans spinning until I close the lid

TLDR : Fans randomly start spinning like crazy and calm down only if I close the lid.

Hello there !

At work, I have a MacBook Pro 15" mid-2015 (2,5GHz Intel Core i7, 16Gb 1600MHz DDR3). I have basically the same apps open all day long and it works fine with the CPU at roughly 50°C.

A few times a day, while I minded my business and doing nothing in particular, then fans start spinning very loudly (but the CPU temperature stays the same).

The first times it happened I thought there was something like the time machine working in the background but I checked and its not. Moreover, if I bear with it and don't do anything, they keep spinning like crazy for hours and never seem to calm down.

The weird part is : If I close the lid of my computer (which is plugged to another screen, so it doesn't shut down or anything), the fans calm down slowly. If I open the lid again while they're calming or when they're done, the problem doesn't come back immediately (but will eventually, a few hours later).

I've read about people having fans spinning WHEN closing the lid, but I don't know what to do about this problem in particular.

Any idea ? :D

How Can I view My local/offline Html file on Ipad

I have My HTML file saved in many locations on IPAD to try to launch it.

  1. In files. When i click on the html file, it shows a preview ( with an empty white page) since this step is not calling any links (js, css, etc) i tried to tap and hold to see if i can open it with safari also no luck, and i did some research about it. It says that you can not open html with safari or any other browser on ipad cause it will not call the links in the folder.

  2. I tried to open it in dropbox also. Again it shows a white empty page.

  3. I tried to launch it directly after downloading the file from we transfer (i sent it to myself) also no option to launch it. It only gives me the option to save it.

  4. I used to save it to files, icloud or dropbox. I previously downloaded an app called documents by readdle. Locate the file. When i used to click on it, it used to work perfectly fine. Within the app itself. No browser needed. But suddenly after updating the app all the html folders i have stopped working.

  5. I also tried documents pro app: no luck

  6. goodreader app: it opens the file but freezes and the app stops responding after.

  7. I also didn't find a way from safari to locate a specific file and open it.

so i reached the i "give up" phase. And i am searching for help 😅

How do I remove the source (base) from my terminal?

Now, everytime I open my terminal it always comes with the (base)

Force Sidecar to use usb connection

macOS Catalina has a feature where you can use your iPad as a secondary display for your Mac. I have a Macbook Pro 2016 and a 10.5 inch iPad Pro 2017. Both are officially supported for the latest versions of macOS and iPadOS and support Sidecar.

I installed the latest version of iPadOS and macOS and tried using Sidecar and it kinda works but it's extremely laggy and blurry and almost unusable and if I turn wifi off in my mac it disconnects and complains about wifi being turned off.

As far as I know this feature can work with wired connections as well and I tried connecting iPad to Macbook using a (Lightning -> USB A) to USB C adapter and also also tried using a USB 3 hub connected directly to the laptop using USB C and it still does not work.

Is there any way I could force Sidecar to work over a wired connection?

iPhone 4s asking for old Apple ID but nowhere to type code

My phone was disabled so I connected it with iTunes. We unlocked it and now it is requesting the old Apple ID. I don't know the old one but my brother made a password reset, and now it gave us a code but there is nowhere to type it in on the phone. The screen didn't reset for us to type in the code. What do I do? Of iPhone 4s

Why is my Advanced Add Printer mode disabled?

I am using a Unibody MacBook Pro on Lion. I am trying to add a networked printer at work so I can print to it, but OS X is not cooperating with me.

Typically for adding networked printers on a Windows network, most instructions online suggest you open the Print & Fax preference pane, hit the + button to Add Printer, then use the Advanced tab to select the type of networked printer, and type in a specific URL to reach it.

I would like to follow these steps, but I am unable. As you can see in the screenshot below, everything under the Advanced tab in the Add Printer window is disabled.

I don't understand how or why this is. My user definitely has full administrator privileges, and this tab of all the others in the dialog should be open-ended and allow you to type and search for printers to add regardless of environment, or perhaps what OS X may have already detected as plugged-in or over Bonjour.

I have searched the web for any indication of why this area of my Add Printer dialog is unusable, but have not been able to find any clues. Any tips to get this thing unstuck are appreciated.

P.S. My connection to the Windows network at work seems to be fine. I am able to mount and use several of the shared network drives over SMB.

What are Icon\r files and how do I delete them?

I notice that within my xcode project I see an Icon\r file. When I go to the folder where the project is from finder, I don't see this file. I believe this is some sort of hidden file that I should not be able to see. However, xcode sees this file and it's causing some error on my project when I try to archive it.

The following is the error that I got:

Is there a way I can delete this file? I can't delete it from within xcode. When I drag and drop it into trash nothing happened and when I right click it, it doesn't give me the option to delete the file.

The project folder is inside my dropbox folder so I think dropbox is the one that put the file there.
