How to block "No Caller ID" calls but not unknown calls

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 11:09 PM PDT

My phone number is published on the website of a project I run. However, it seems some young people have found it really funny to start prank calling me. It's very annoying and rather humiliating to have them get a laugh out of me at my expense. I would like to block them.

The conventional advice is to enable "Silence Unknown callers" in iOS 13. However, this will block not only Unknown Caller ID but also any number not in contacts. This doesn't work for me, because as a part of the project, strangers will contact me by calling which I do want.

Is there any way to only block private numbers/"No Caller ID" in iOS without also blocking people that are not in contacts? It doesn't seem like a hard problem but it's doing my head in. I've tried the 000-000-0000 trick but it doesn't work.

How to hide links when searching messages in iOS 14?

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 08:26 PM PDT

When I use the search bar in messages I am bombarded with links to websites, and all I want to do is search through my messages history.

Has Apple sacrificed usability and "It just works" for corporate pimping?

I have Siri and more or less every search "enhancement" I can find turned off in Siri & Search.

How can I search my messages history without capitalist pig dogs incessantly hawking their wares at me?

Renamed an icloud drive folder with the .tmp extension and files have disappeared

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 06:22 PM PDT

I read that I could rename a folder to have the..tmp extension to prevent it syncing over. I did this to a folder that had some confidential files, but I renamed the folder in my icloud drive and the files have all disappeared.

I found a copy of the folder on the desktop, but that was also empty. Any idea where I could locate these files or are they lost?

Can I prevent macOS from asking for keyboard type every time?

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 04:18 PM PDT

I use a lot of keyboards and I flash their firmware often. Every time macOS recognizes a new keyboard, it'd ask me to press the keys next to the shifts to identify the layout. It can be annoying if you get asked more than a handful times a day. The thing is, I always use ANSI keyboards. Is there a way to shut it up? Thanks!

Big Sur - Homebrew Intall - illegal variable name

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 04:09 PM PDT

Trying to install Homebrew on Big Sur 11.2.3

Using: /usr/bin/ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/HEAD/install.sh)" in my Terminal

Getting: "Illegal variable name"

The above code installed fine on a VM of High Sierra an hour ago. so I know it works

Anyone have any ideas why it is not working on Big Sur?

Is it reasonable to buy a new Apple Watch even though you own an iPhone 8?

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 02:28 PM PDT

I own an iPhone 8 and I am considering buying an Apple Watch SE (GPS, 44 mm). I have had my iPhone for a long time and I have replaced the battery once. In my opinion, the iPhone 8 works perfectly well. But I have been contemplating about getting a fitness watch for a long time now and I really wanna buy an Apple Watch, but is it a good idea? Will it not drain my phone battery when paired? And will all features on the watch be available?

Question: Should you buy an older Apple Watch if you own an iPhone 8?

Launchct GD Extension with Freetype support not working on php

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 01:37 PM PDT

I'm Running a .plist php file

previously, I've installed phpbrew and use 7.3.11 php version.

Then I've just installed GD extension with freetype support

I can running my php files into Macos terminal with not problem at all using GD Extension.

As we can see here:

juanpro@MacBook-Air-de-juanpro ~ % php /Applications/XAMPP/xamppfiles/htdocs/alert/imagen.php  Array  (  [GD Version] => bundled (2.1.0 compatible)  [FreeType Support] => 1  [FreeType Linkage] => with freetype  [GIF Read Support] => 1  [GIF Create Support] => 1  [JPEG Support] => 1  [PNG Support] => 1  [WBMP Support] => 1  [XPM Support] =>   [XBM Support] => 1  [WebP Support] =>   [BMP Support] => 1  [TGA Read Support] => 1  [JIS-mapped Japanese Font Support] =>   )  FreeType Support Enabled

But if I Schedule the same file I don't get the desired output, apparently the GD extension is not running.

What I tried to do

My first thought was a permission problem

So a check all folder and file permissions. Then I check my .plist permissions as well, then Ive use chown root chgrp wheel.

Nothing Works.

So, Ive just wondering about creating a log file in order to see the error output (I'm a lawyer but do my best try), so a Put some lines into the Plist file and finally I can see the output

Array  (  [GD Version] => bundled (2.1.0 compatible)  [FreeType Support] =>   [GIF Read Support] => 1  [GIF Create Support] => 1  [JPEG Support] => 1  [PNG Support] => 1  [WBMP Support] => 1  [XPM Support] =>   [XBM Support] => 1  [WebP Support] =>   [BMP Support] => 1  [JIS-mapped Japanese Font Support] =>   )

This was totally weird to me, Because same file executes with not problem directly into terminal.

So, I thought: Maybe, Launchctl are using another php versión

Then I Use a PHP Code into my file to see what version are actually running and I getting this:

Core => 7.3.11<br/>date => 7.3.11<br/>libxml => 7.3.11<br/>openssl => 7.3.11<br/>pcre => 7.3.11<br/>sqlite3 => 7.3.11<br/>zlib => 7.3.11<br/>bcmath => 7.3.11<br/>bz2 => 7.3.11<br/>calendar => 7.3.11<br/>ctype => 7.3.11<br/>curl => 7.3.11<br/>dba => 7.3.11<br/>dom => 20031129<br/>hash => 7.3.11<br/>fileinfo => 7.3.11<br/>filter => 7.3.11<br/>ftp => 7.3.11<br/>gd => 7.3.11<br/>SPL => 7.3.11<br/>iconv => 7.3.11<br/>json => 1.7.0<br/>ldap => 7.3.11<br/>mbstring => 7.3.11<br/>session => 7.3.11<br/>standard => 7.3.11<br/>mysqlnd => mysqlnd 5.0.12-dev - 20150407 - $Id: 7cc7cc96e675f6d72e5cf0f267f48e167c2abb23 $<br/>PDO => 7.3.11<br/>pdo_mysql => 7.3.11<br/>pdo_pgsql => 7.3.11<br/>pdo_sqlite => 7.3.11<br/>pgsql => 7.3.11<br/>Phar => 7.3.11<br/>posix => 7.3.11<br/>readline => 7.3.11<br/>Reflection => 7.3.11<br/>mysqli => 7.3.11<br/>shmop => 7.3.11<br/>SimpleXML => 7.3.11<br/>snmp => 7.3.11<br/>soap => 7.3.11<br/>sockets => 7.3.11<br/>exif => 7.3.11<br/>sysvmsg => 7.3.11<br/>sysvsem => 7.3.11<br/>sysvshm => 7.3.11<br/>tidy => 7.3.11<br/>tokenizer => 7.3.11<br/>wddx => 7.3.11<br/>xml => 7.3.11<br/>xmlreader => 7.3.11<br/>xmlrpc => 7.3.11<br/>xmlwriter => 7.3.11<br/>xsl => 7.3.11<br/>  enter code here

So, this is a mistery to me, because I really don't know why Launchctl refuses to uses the GD extension with freetype support previously installed in that version (it works only without freetype). ¿Am I forgetting something? Thanks in advance

Internal SATA drive unmounts by itself

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 01:35 PM PDT

I have a 1TB SSD that was my boot drive in my now-dead MacBook Pro, and I need to recover some files from it and clone it. The idea is to have an exact copy on another HDD that I can clone back to that SSD or use it as my source for migration when I fix or replace that MBP while I use that SSD in another computer (It seems kinda wasteful to leave a 1TB SSD in a drawer somewhere).

I installed the MBP SSD inside another Mac to clone it with CCC, however, when I boot into this second Mac, the MBP SSD unmounts itself after a few seconds. Mounting it through Disk Utility ends up in the same way: I mount it and after a few seconds, it unmounts by itself. Doing it through Terminal says the disk was mounted successfully, but the same thing happens, the drive unmounts itself after a few seconds.

First Aid says the drive is fine, and swapping the MPB SSD to another SATA connection inside still results in the same issue. The second Mac works as it should, apart from the MBP SSD unmounting itself, even with other SATA drives, which leads me to believe that the issue is specific to that SSD.

Does that happen because the Mac sees two bootable drives or something like it? Both machines are/were on High Sierra w/ APFS.

iPhone not working but iPad is working with chromecast

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 01:31 PM PDT

I have been using my phone to cast to my chromecast for almost a year with no problems but about a month ago my phone stopped seeing that my chromecast was available. Fortunately I have an older iPad, so in the case where my phone does not work I use my iPad to cast which still works as it always has. My iPhone and iPad are both on the same WiFi network so if one sees the chromecast, so should the other. Why does my phone not see my chromecast on the same WiFi network but my iPad does?

What I have tried:

  1. In the beginning I found that if I reset the chromecast that would allow the phone to see it and cast to it, but that does not work anymore. RESET CHROMECAST = NO
  2. I try resetting my iPhone but there is no change. RESET PHONE = NO
  3. In the beginning I found that if I reset the WiFi router that would fix it, but that no longer works. RESET ROUTER = NO
  4. I thought maybe the chromecast was old and breaking so I recently got a new device but that did not have any effect on this problem. BUY A NEW CHROMECAST = NO

My conclusion: I may be wrong, but the last thing I can think of is that the phone is broken.

Does anyone have any ideas before I conclude that the phone is just broken?

MacBook Pro (16" 2019) Does Not Recognize Correct Resolution

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 11:34 AM PDT

I'm having a rather annoying issue with my MacBook Pro 16" 2019 device since upgrading to macOS Big Sur. Every time I plug my device to my 4K monitor into the device (via USB-C to USB-C, or USB-C to DisplayPort), macOS will show a maximum resolution of 1600x900 but my monitor's recommended resolution is 3840 x 2160.

Photo shows the Display setting screen, with resolution of 1080p selected

I currently have a workaround to resolve the issue which is the following:

  1. I switch from 1080p resolution to 1600x900
  2. Un-plug the cable, and plug it back in again
  3. Then switch to 3840x2160

This process can be tedious and take a while to complete (between switching resolutions). Is there any solutions which people are aware of?

These are the details of the device and monitor

  • macOS Version: 11.2.3
  • Model: MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019)
  • Processor: 2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 4GB
  • Monitor: BenQ EW327OU

These are the things which I've done to date

  • I can't pin the issue on the monitor, as I've been using a MacBook Pro (2017) with the monitor for a week or so without a single problem.
  • Used ColorSync to repair any issues with the monitor profiles
  • Used various other cables such as HDMI, USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to DisplayPort.
  • Reset NVRAM and SMC
  • Re-installed macOS
  • I can't reproduce the error in Windows via Bootcamp, so I'm confident it's OS related.

Restore access to Recovery Volume after update to Big Sur

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 02:47 PM PDT

After updating macOS from Catalina to Big Sur, I cannot boot into the recovery volume by pressing Cmd+R during boot anymore. Rather than booting from the recovery volume when holding Cmd+R, I see a spinning globe indicating that some system image is fetched from the internet.

Is there a way to restore access to the local recovery volume for Big Sur without wiping the disk and doing a complete re-install of the operating system?

diskutil list

I think, the recovery volume is still present. When running diskutil list, I stil see the APFS Volume Recovery. Do I need to re-add some boot flags to make it work again?

Things I've tried

  • I've tried to use a rEFIt stick: When I boot from rEFIt, I can see the Recovery Volume. But when I try to boot from it, I get the error: "The firmware refused to boot from the selected volume."
  • I've tried to reset the nvram with Command+Option+P+R during startup, which does not resolve the issue.
  • I've used a bootable macOS install usb stick and run Disk Utility's First Aid from there, but it didn't help.

Corrupt Photos in Photos_Private.photoslibrary

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 04:23 PM PDT

When I try to open a photo in Photos_Private.photoslibrary, its corrupted. However, if I select Show Package Contents and open the Originals folder, everything is fine. So the question is, where do I need to copy the folder Originals to, to be able to view the images in Photos?

Is there a way to switch virtual desktops on two or more monitors SIMULTANEOUSLY?

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 02:39 PM PDT

I have my laptop (M1, Big Sur 11.3 Build 20E5186d) and a second monitor. I split up my virtual desktops into "topics" so I can better handle the big amount of open windows and applications.

On my laptop, I have Desktop 1,2,3,4,5. On my second monitor, I have 6,7,8,9,10.

The Desktop topics are kind of "paired", so e.g. when I am working on coding tasks, I use Desktop 1 (on the laptop) and Desktop 6 (on the second monitor), which both have relevant apps and windows open.

Now, when I want to switch to another topic, e.g. to Desktop 2 which has another topic, I also want the second monitor to simultaneously switch to Desktop 7 (one virtual Desktop to the right on each device).

Is there such a possibility/feature?

This relay isn't allowed to send mail "From" me.com

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 12:56 PM PDT

We have a domain on a Virtual Private Server hosted in GoDaddy and I have set up an email that forwards to a me.com email, the email gets delivered to the me.com email but when I respond from there I get a (This relay isn't allowed to send mail "From" me.com) delivery failure message.

How can I set up any arbitrary Mail client to send as me?

Unable to mount read-write in Big Sur 11.2.2 in Single User Mode

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 05:37 PM PDT

I'm on Big Sur 11.2.2, Single User Mode. When I use /sbin/mount -uw /, it says mount_apfs: volume could not be mounted: Permission denied and failed with 66.

I have read this post. But mount -uw /System/Volumes/Data gives mount: unknown special file or file system /System/Volumes/Data/. Also, csrutil enable --without fs in recovery mode changes nothing. Errors still occurs. (Previous tries are based on SIP entirely disabled.)

The commands mount -P 1; /usr/libexec/init_data_protection; mount -P 2 in the prompt during startup works. However, I don't know what it's mounting.

PS: current SIP status:

Configuration: Apple Internal: disabled Kext Signing: enabled Filesystem Protections: disabled Debugging Restrictions: enabled DTrace Restrictions: enabled NVRAM Protections: enabled BaseSystem Verification: enabled This is an unsupported configuration, likely to break in the future and leave your machine in an unknown state.

Samsung G9 not working with MacbBook Pro 2012

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 09:12 PM PDT

I was using M1 Apple Macbook Pro but had to sell it for some reason but now I am back on my Macbook Pro 2012. I tried using the display port to HDMI on SAMSUNG - Odyssey G95 but my MacBook seems to freeze and when I take the cable off the MacBook it is working. But the monitor doesn't even display.

Why is it happening

Is there a config option to maximize widows that are minimized when you select them via cmd+tab

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 04:01 PM PDT

Is there a config option so maximize widows that are minimized when you select them via cmd+tab?

I understand why this might be not possible, since technically the selection involves the app, not the window. And you might have multiple windows in various states of maximized/minimized. And you don't necessarily want to maximize all minimized windows...

BUT, that said, I often just have one minimized window of an app open, and it would be very useful for it to maximize itself when I select the app with cmd+tab.

Thoughts?

Printing Error - Stopped - The file '/private/var/spool/cups/tmp/...' could not be opened

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 02:03 PM PDT

When trying to print a PDF document using Preview (as well as printing any other document from any application), I'm getting the following error about how Stopped - The file '/private/var/spool/cups/tmp/0076a5fa0ea54 could not be opened.

Every time I print a new document the last section of the path changes.

I went into Terminal and listed the contents of that directory (/private/var/spool/cups/tmp) in sudo mode, and the file doesn't exist. Only one different file with a different name.

Tried restarting the computer, printer, and deleted the printer from macOS and re-added it.

Any ideas on how to fix this? I'm running macOS 10.15.7.

Printer Error

A software update is required to use this startup disk - does not update

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 11:15 PM PDT

I'm trying to do a clean install of macOS via USB on my MacBook Pro 2019 13". I have setup the boot security so that:

  1. It has medium security (I also tried no security) on bootable devices
  2. Allows the Mac to boot from an external drive.

I formatted my USB to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with GDUI partition map. The USB with the macOS installer successfully shows on the startup manager. When I try and boot from it, however, I get this message:

enter image description here

I click update and I then get this error after seeing an Apple Logo (yes I was connected to internet):

enter image description here

So in conclusion I cannot boot from this USB.

The USB is of type USB-A that's connected through a USB-C hub, that could be the problem? Maybe a direct connection from a USB-C usb flash drive is better? Or the wrong formatting on the USB drive.

That's the only two I suspect. But then again, why isn't it updating?

Thanks.

iMessage iCloud - Time Machine Restore

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 03:04 PM PDT

I was trying to free up space on my iPad and accidentally hit delete iMessage history after 1 year in iMessage- thinking it would just affect the iPad. Since I had iMessage in iCloud enabled it deleted all my iMessage history after 1 year from all of my devices (iPhone, Mac, iPad) as well as in iCloud (~10 years of iMessage history (25GB)). I didn't have it in an iCloud backup since I was using iMessage in iCloud. 😓 I thought I had permanently lost it but remembered I have been doing Time Machine backups on my Mac which is synced with iCloud iMessages.

My question is: I restored the iMessage database (including all conversations, attachments, etc) from that iMessage Time Machine backup on my Mac and all of the messages are showing properly on my Mac. I thought once I enabled iCloud iMessage on my Mac it would push the old (previously deleted now restored) messages onto iCloud and down to my iPhone and iPad. It is not giving an error it just will not upload the old messages to iCloud.

Repeating /Systems/Volumes/Data/Systems/Volumes/Data

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 11:35 AM PDT

I'm using ncdu to see where my storage space is going, and noticed a seemingly endless file path it seems to be traversing:

/System/Volumes/Data/System/Volumes/Data/System/Volumes/Data/System/Volumes/Data/System/Volumes...

This file path doesn't actually exist if I try to cd in there (thank goodness):

$ ls -lshart /System/Volumes/Data/System/  total 0  0 drwxr-xr-x@  3 root  wheel    96B Aug 24  2019 .  0 drwxr-xr-x   9 root  wheel   288B Sep 29  2019 Library  0 drwxr-xr-x  26 root  wheel   832B Apr 20 02:15 ..

But it does seem that I'm inexplicably using more data than I think I am; ncdu says I'm using about 40GB under the user space, and I try to keep the machine fairly uncluttered. XCode and Docker are the largest applications of the few I have, by far.

For example, ncdu is telling me I'm using 487GB (and counting), while the machine has only an 120GB SSD:

Total items: 17767208 size: 484.7 GiB

On Catalina 1.15.4.

Can't install updates from macOS App Store

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 01:46 PM PDT

I'm on a new Mojave install and I can't install updates to Apple suite programs (Garageband, Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie). I've updated macOS and Xcode command line tools successfully from the Software Update app. When I open App Store, it says that I'm not signed in. (Logga in means Login in Swedish).

Screenshot showing that I'm not logged in

I try to login, but each time I enter my Apple ID password it just loads and exits the login prompt, without switching to logged in state. Note that I've logged into iCloud and iTunes successfully.

When I try to update the outdated apps. The circle loads for some minutes, and then the Update button returns.

Screenshot showing update circle on Garageband

I've tried some different tips that I've found online, such as this, and this.

Prevent switching workspaces when clicking on dock icon

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 11:41 PM PDT

I am constantly running multiple applications on multiple workspaces. I want to remain on the same workspace, and only switch workspaces when I explicitly ask for it (e.g. with a magic mouse gesture).

Currently when I click on the app icon in the dock, osx switches to the next workspace that has a window of the active application.

I know there is an option in System Preferences -> Misson Control, called "When switching to an application, switch to a space with open windows for the application". What it does: When clicking on the icon of an inactive application, don't switch to a workspace that has the application window. But this option does not affect the behaviour of clicking on an active application.

The question: How do I prevent OSX from ever switching to another wokspace when clicking on an app icon in the dock, regardless of whether the app is active of inactive?

Creating a new folder in finder doesn't highlight "untitled folder" for renaming

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 09:45 PM PDT

I have a trivial but annoying finder bug and I'm wondering if I am the only one?

If I hit command-shift-N in Finder to create a new folder it should automatically highlight the default name untitled folder ready for renaming. It works as expected in icon and list views but not column view which is really annoying because I use column view all the time. I am running OS X 10.8.4 (12E55).

How can I get a high-quality screen capture on a mac?

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 07:20 PM PDT

⌘ + Shift + 3

The screen capture shortcut on the Mac is one of the most useful tools I know. It grabs the screen and neatly places a .png file onto your desktop.

But is this the highest quality screen capture you can get? Is it possible to get a higher resolution screen capture? Are there any ways to tinker with the settings of this command?
