Can't put "/var/lib/dpkg/info" on a new partition with the debian installer Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:46 AM PDT I put /var/lib/dpkg/info on a new partition and put everything else in "/var" on another noexec partition (suggestion 2 in #21941). Every partition was mounted with the defaults flag. Somehow, the installer for Debian buster failed to install new packages to the hard drive. If I don't make a new partition for /var/lib/dpkg/info , the installer works fine. What went wrong? |
Enable lightdm autologin using sed Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:54 AM PDT I need to edit /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf using sed inside specific section, uncomment and set value. This section is [Seat:*] and line is #autologin-user= I expect this change: Before: [LightDM] . . . [Seat:*] . . . #autologin-user= . . . After: [LightDM] . . . [Seat:*] . . . autologin-user=pi . . . I've tried this command: sed -i.bak '/^\[Seat:*]/{s/#autologin-user/autologin-user=pi/}' /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf But without success. PS: There are more occurrences of #autologin-user , so selecting section [Seat:*] is really important. |
Debian 10 installation. Display resolution stuck at single default monitor 720x400 Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:00 AM PDT Fresh install of Deb 10. ATI RADEON 3000 on board GPU I installed this with a really cheap/small AOC monitor via a VGA connect. I do not know if this had anything to do with my problem. I connected the PC to a TCL ROKU UHD TV via HDMI cable. I logged in and started GNOME. The resolution was like it was on the tiny console I did the install from. When I do xrandr : 720x400 0.00+ only is displayed. I have read, it feels like, every blog in this solar system. Tried all of the suggestions. I did go to GRUB command mode and listed all display capabilities and they were all in the output. I checked the driver level. Manually added another resolution and attempted to switch to it. It failed with "Max level is 720x400 0.00" I also get the famous "xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default" message. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Best regards, Michael:D |

How can I tell which ethernet port is the one connected with an ethernet cable? Posted: 23 Mar 2021 08:51 AM PDT This system's was basically cloned from another system so it has its network properties so the network does not work at all. I connected an ethernet cable into one of the ethernet ports and ran ifconfig. I think the output is giving me the details of the previous system. I can't connect to the internet at all or ping other systems on the same network. I ran $lspci | egrep -i --color 'network|ethernet' and the output gave me the two ethernet ports I believe 00:1f:6 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Device 0e7c 07:00:0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation Device 13g7 (rev 02) so the ethernet ports are detected. How do I determine which port is being connected by the ethernet cable? I'm not sure if virbr0 is actually one of the ethernet ports or if it is from the previous original system. |
People already have SSH and SFTP access, any reasons to provide FTP? Posted: 23 Mar 2021 08:34 AM PDT I'm managing a server and users may or may not be in the sudo group. Assume the file permission bits are set properly since the / folder. Users are now using SSH to log into the system, and some of them are using SFTP to transfer files. I guess I understand the difference between SFTP and FTP(s). Since users are expected to use SSH to access the server, are there any reasons to provide FTP(s)? What benefits do I get? Even if I set up FTP(S), are there any reason to disable SFTP? |
Fedora 33 KDE shutdown button has no option to reboot the system anymore Posted: 23 Mar 2021 08:16 AM PDT Since Fedora 24 I always upgraded the system via DNF System Upgrade up until Fedora 33. Some time ago I installed a new Fedora 33 from scratch, to clean up the system. This new installation works fine so far, but has one wired quirk, the upgraded old one didn't have. When I configure a shutdown button in KDE, and use only the default option "Leave" the button performs an init 0 (shutting the whole computer down) instead of an reboot (restarting the computer). Is there a way to set the default KDE shutdown button to reboot? The upgraded old Fedora performed a reboot with the same button (and button setting). |
What are some useful use-cases for eval in Shell? Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:02 AM PDT You hear it a lot eval is evil , whether it's in Shell/POSIX world, or in other langs like python etc... But I'm wondering, is it actually useless? or is it there some arcane, non-documented, interesting or just useful use-cases for it? Would prefer if the answer is sh /bash centric, but it's fine if it's about other Shells too. PS: I'm well aware why eval is considered evil . |
How to find why a Debian package is no longer in the stable release? Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:05 AM PDT I often run into the situation in which some tutorial (or similar) that I find online recommends installing a Debian package that is no longer available in the latest stable release. Likewise, sometimes apt install lists "suggested packages" that are no longer available1. Is there a formal record of why a Debian package is no longer available? 1 In fact, at the moment, I am interested in the torbrowser-launcher package, which apt lists among the suggested packages for the tor package, but my question is not specific to it. As I wrote above, this is a recurring situation. |
Linux Mint 20.1 will no longer start Posted: 23 Mar 2021 08:57 AM PDT I may have really screwed up. I changed the contents of a file on linux and now virtual box hangs. Here's what I did: In my home directory on linux there is a file .gtkrc-2.0. The file looks something like this: style "xfdesktop-icon-view" { XfdesktopIconView::label-alpha = 0 XfdesktopIconView::selected-label-alpha = 80 XfdesktopIconView::shadow-x-offset = 0 XfdesktopIconView::shadow-y-offset = 1 XfdesktopIconView::selected-shadow-x-offset = 0 XfdesktopIconView::selected-shadow-y-offset = 1 XfdesktopIconView::shadow-color = shade(1.5, @tooltip_bg_color) XfdesktopIconView::selected-shadow-color = shade(1.8, @tooltip_bg_color) XfdesktopIconView::shadow-blur-radius = 2 XfdesktopIconView::cell-spacing = 2 XfdesktopIconView::cell-padding = 6 XfdesktopIconView::cell-text-width-proportion = 1.9 fg[NORMAL] = shade (0.9, @selected_fg_color) fg[ACTIVE] = @selected_fg_color My actual file only had lines in it with the word shadow. I commented those out and restarted the linux system through vb. The first time I did this the system restarted so that may or may not be the issue. However, on subsequent attempts I am unable to get the linus guest running. Update Latte Dock v0.9 to v0.10 Posted: 23 Mar 2021 08:26 AM PDT I am starting to use Arch Linux and, I am customizing my KDE Plasma. I've initially installed Latte Dock 0.9 because I thought it was the latest version. Now I need the Latte Dock 0.10 because, with the Latte Dock 0.9, tapplet-latte-sidebar-button breaks. Can anyone help me? I didn't find anything that could help me and, because I already have Latte Dock 0.9 installed, I don't know how to do it. Sorry if it's a simple question or if the solution is simple. I am starting to use Linux as my main operating system and, I don't want to break something. Edit: To install it, I've cloned these repository. Then I've run these two commands. sudo pacman -Syu sudo pacman -S cmake extra-cmake-modules python plasma-framework plasma-desktop After I run the installation script sh install.sh |
How can I get the count of specific characters using vim in a file Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:35 AM PDT My question is similar to this one: How can I count the number of words in a file whilst editing the file in vim But with a different task where I have to count characters with the search function in vim and write them at the of the file. For example, if I have to count how many numeric characters are there, I would need something like this: :%s/[0-9]/{g} and after that a command that counts how many characters I have selected with that search. Edit: I'm trying a method where I first select all the characters that I want to count with /[0-9] and trying to use '<,'> like this: '<,'> !wc -m |

But there is a router, with public IP address, which forwards the SSH 22 port to the private IP address. sshd log Suggested here, I used this command on server to log sshd output: $ tail -f -n 500 /var/log/auth.log | grep 'sshd' When I run ssh uconn@192.168.1.11 on client I get the following log: Mar 23 17:26:10 server-homeshine sshd[1355]: Accepted password for uconn from 192.168.1.52 port 53107 ssh2 Mar 23 17:26:10 server-homeshine sshd[1355]: pam_unix(sshd:session): session opened for user uconn by (uid=0) But when I run ssh uconn@11.111.11.111 on client, no log is displayed whatsoever. How to map compose key to insert via setxkbmap? Posted: 23 Mar 2021 08:13 AM PDT I'm using US (non-international) layout. One way of typing üäöß is setting a compose key via: setxkbmap -layout us -option compose:ralt Unfortunately, this removes the normal "alt" functionality from right alt. 1- I figured insert key is useless in modern editors. How to map the compose key to it? The list of available options does only include few keys: grep "compose:" /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/base.lst compose:lwin Left Win compose:lwin-altgr 3rd level of Left Win compose:rwin Right Win compose:rwin-altgr 3rd level of Right Win compose:menu Menu compose:menu-altgr 3rd level of Menu compose:lctrl Left Ctrl compose:lctrl-altgr 3rd level of Left Ctrl compose:rctrl Right Ctrl compose:rctrl-altgr 3rd level of Right Ctrl compose:caps Caps Lock compose:caps-altgr 3rd level of Caps Lock compose:102 <Less/Greater> compose:102-altgr 3rd level of <Less/Greater> compose:paus Pause compose:prsc PrtSc compose:sclk Scroll Lock 2- Is there a way to retain the "alt" functionality when it is mapped to compose? 3- Is there a way to make right_alt, as AltGr without changing the keyboard layout to international? |
Moving from dual-boot (Windows10 / Pop_OS) to single (just Pop); Q's about my EFI setup: 2 EFI partitions? Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:40 AM PDT Last July, as a complete Linux noob, I bought a refurbished Dell e7470 with Windows 10 pro pre-installed. I followed instructions in this video (cued to disk partition steps) to install Pop_OS 20.04 to dual-boot with Windows 10: Pop!_OS 19.10 - Setting up a Dual Boot with Windows 10. It went well. Now I am thinking about removing Windows, and I am looking at my disk partitions to see what can be removed. Here is screenshot from GNOME Disks while running Pop: I do not understand why the video had me create a new EFI partition (sda5) instead of using the ESP (sda1) that was pre-installed with Windows. I am wondering if that may cause problems, but, more importantly, whether I can use Disks to remove the Windows OS (sda3) as well as the ESP (sda1), recovery partition (sda4) and "Microsoft Reserved" (sda2). I do not want to do something wrong and end up with an un-bootable computer. In case it is helpful, here is the output from efibootmgr : steve@pop-os:~$ sudo efibootmgr BootCurrent: 0003 Timeout: 2 seconds BootOrder: 0003,0000,0001,0004 Boot0000* Windows Boot Manager Boot0001* UEFI: SK hynix SC311 SATA 512GB, Partition 1 Boot0002* Pop!_OS 20.04 LTS Boot0003* Pop!_OS 20.04 LTS Boot0004* Linux Firmware Updater Boot0000 and Boot0001 seem to be the same -- Partition 1, as are Boot0002 and Boot0003 (partition 5). I would like to know: - Is this 2-EFI-partition setup acceptable?
- How would I safely (and as completely as possible) remove Windows 10?
- Will my system be bootable without ESP, ie, will it use Partition 5 which says it mounts at
/boot/efi ? |
How to backup and restore Dolphin toolbar settings? Posted: 23 Mar 2021 09:38 AM PDT After installing Dolphin I spend a lot of time customizing it, something which is normal in Plasma. But can we save these detailed changes for future use? I am interested in backing up as many settings as possible, but I will ask here more simply about the most obvious: the toolbar buttons. |
Poor CPU Frequency on HP Laptop running Kubuntu Posted: 23 Mar 2021 08:51 AM PDT After using Windows my hole life, i wanted to try a new operating system. I settled on Kubuntu since I liked the design and the easy usability of Ubuntu from a newbie perspective. While using it for browsing I haven't noticed any problems. However when I try to load some CPU intensive tasks I can feel a significant performance hit compared to windows. But first of all my configuration: I'm running a HP Probook 470 G5 with a Intel i7 8550u which should be capable of 1.8GHz on all cores and 3.7GHz burst. However when I load the CPU (e.g a stresstest) it will only run at 1.2GHz (output from i7z) As you can also see in the picture the CPU isn't thermal throttling. As soon as I reduce the load the clockspeeds return to "normal" I also issued sudo cpupower frequency-set -g performance to change the CPU profile to performance. This didn't show any difference in clock speed under load. Also note that I'm running all test with plugged in power cord. Furthermore no advanced power manager should be running, but you can prove me wrong ;) If you need any more information I will add them as soon as possible. I assume it has something to do with the general power management of the system, but I can be wrong. Hopefully we can find a solution. Otherwise I will need to change back to windows ;( The Kernel Version is 5.8.0-44-generic Edit: I noticed that the temps spike (at least s-tui show that) on the CPU die itself, then the CPU throttles and never recovers. Edit: Turning the CPU frequency down to 2GHz result in a way longer CPU burst, but only at 2 GHz. This may indicate that it's in fact a thermal issue. However I would consider 60°C as more than adequate cooling. |
Backlight control not working on Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 with Renoir / AMDGPU Posted: 23 Mar 2021 08:43 AM PDT The brightness (LCD backlight) controls on a Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 (15ARH05, LCD display, AMD Renoir CPU Ryzen 5 4600H, discrete NVIDIA GeForce 1650 Ti Mobile) are not working: Fn keys show the brightness slider on the display moving. /sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_bl0/brightness changes accordingly from 0 to 255. - The display does not show any brightness change.
- Manually writing to
brightness does not change the display's brightness either. /sys/class/backlight/amdgpu_bl0/actual_brightness stays at 311. I figure this indicates a problem with the amdgpu driver. - The display seems to stay at full brightness always.
Adjustments work fine on Windows 10. The laptop is running: - Kali Linux Rolling
linux-image-5.8.0-kali[23]-amd64 (based on 5.8.14) and custom-built kernels 5.9, 5.9.1 and 5.10-rc1, mostly based off the Kali config - X with
amdgpu drivers, discrete graphics unused (proprietary NVIDIA drivers loaded and unloaded for testing). I have tried booting with various acpi_backlight kernel options, which lead to various backlights being available in /sys/class/backlight/*/brightness : acpi_backlight=video : acpi_video0 acpi_video1 amdgpu_bl0 acpi_backlight=vendor : amdgpu_bl0 ideapad acpi_backlight=native : amdgpu_bl0 acpi_backlight=none : amdgpu_bl0 Other things that did not work: acpi_osi=Linux (no change) acpi_osi= (hangs at boot) - BIOS update (no other version available)
- moving
/lib/firmware/amdgpu/renoir_dmcu.bin away - patching
amdgpu_dm.c I am aware that there has been a number of updates related to backlights for AMDGPUs, like general support and fixes in kernel 5.7.x and updates to the scaling of brightness values >255 in 5.9, but so far this seems not to have helped my case (or possibly, broke more things). I am not looking for: - software alternatives
- adjusting the gamma values
- using discrete graphics (if it can be avoided)
What else can I do or look into to gain control of the backlight? I came across this comment and this bug report, which seem to suggest that some kernel fixes may have broken other things. What would be the best place to report that? |

Custom EDID for specfic physical monitor, not output Posted: 23 Mar 2021 08:40 AM PDT I have a setup where I connect to two different displays depending on where I am. I would like to use a mode which one of the monitors doesn't allow, but that won't be loaded when any other display is connected. To be more concrete, the I would like to overclock the external display at home to 120hz, but not overclock a different display at work that I connect to the same HDMI port. Is this possible using nvidia? I can't seem to be able to override EDID with xrandr, at the same time using the EDID settings by default. |
Use desktop icons in Debian 10 Posted: 23 Mar 2021 08:41 AM PDT Debian 10 (Buster) uses GNOME 3.30, which again can use icons on the desktop. To achieve this, I understand that one needs to make a setting that GNOME uses Nautilus to manage the desktop. I searched in dconf-editor, Optimierungen and Einstellungen (no idea what they're called in English), bus was unable to find such a setting. Where can I find this? |

I'm not able to add any PPA. |
