In Apple Pages, is there a function to search for names and tell me yes or no?

Posted: 02 Jul 2022 10:42 AM PDT

In apple pages, I have a list of names created and it's gotten too big for me to scroll through and see if a name already exists. I was curious if there is a way to make a function/formula to help me find names that are already inside my list and confirm them.

I have a table made with the names, (an A, B type column with 180+ rows of the names) And I want to add a function up top where I can type into a box and it returns if the name is already there or not. Would the 'If' function work like this for me? or the 'Search' function? (if-true)"Name Found", (if-false)"No name Found") ?

I also understand that I can use the (Cmd + F shortcut to search for the names that way, but that's an extra window. I wondered if there was a function to solve this situation.

Icons for files opened with a given app are show showing

Posted: 02 Jul 2022 09:23 AM PDT

I have installed Catalina 10.15.7 and for some reason the icons for the ".tex" files to be opened with the app "TexMaker" disappeared. Namely what I see for a given file is a generic icon like this: enter image description here

On the other hand, when I open /Applications/texmaker.app/Contents/Resources, the texmaker.icns is:

enter image description here

When I have a file ".bib" or ".sty", the icons are correctly displayed. These formats are given in the .plist of the TexMaker app copied below. I do not understand why the same does not happen with ".tex" whence the question:

How do I get the correct icons for the ".tex" files?

I tried to delete some cache files, kill the Finder, turn off/on my computer, go to safe mode, ... nothing seems to work!

MacOS not trusting the Cisco Umbrella Root CA

Posted: 02 Jul 2022 10:34 AM PDT

I've started seeing failing "Cisco Umbrella Secondary SubCA syd-SG" certs in all sorts of places suddenly when browsing. Safari, Firefox, Chrome on my 2 macs are both having this problem for various sites that all use the Cisco Umbrella Root CA.

My main source of non-technical news was what I first noticed... Missing images on theage.com.au site

https://static.ffx.io/images/$zoom_0.24609375%2C$multiply_0.8862%2C$ratio_1.5%2C$width_756%2C$x_0%2C$y_0/t_crop_custom/q_62%2Cf_auto/1a9b8a6c39d0b07f63b73f0cb5e0a69a5d15c50a untrusted cert for theage.com.au's static images

Then it's on the pan macmillan site as well...

This is happening on safari, chrome, firefox on both my macs, and my ipad. doesn't seem to happen on my iphone. And i don't have a non-apple device at home...

What I'm really trying to find out is:

  • is this just me!??!
  • is this just on macs, and Apple hasn't updated its Root CA list? (It's not on their list of trusted Root CAs)
  • if it's just me, any idea how I fix this?

Thank you in advance!

Why can't I change the date or time on my MacBook Air?

Posted: 02 Jul 2022 07:56 AM PDT

I'm trying to change the date on my MacBook Air (2020, running MacOS 12.4). When I try to do so I'm met with this screen:

sys pref change time

"Set date and time automatically" is checked and cannot be unchecked, even after I've authenticated. The time zone tab looks like this:

set time zone

When I turn on location services for Date and Time it sets my time correctly, but then after a few minutes or hours that setting magically unchecks itself and I'm back to square one.

How can I fix this and either set my time manually or set my location correctly?

Update

Interestingly, when I turn on location services this is what shows up:

location services pane

How do I get back the input source flags on my menu bar?

Posted: 02 Jul 2022 08:49 AM PDT

I just upgraded to macOS Monterey 12.4 and now the flags, primarily the one for the current input source, is gone from the menu bar and was replaced with a country code.

I find the colored flags much easier to work with, also when quickly switching between inputs via a shortcut. How do I get back the flags?

Is:

macOS input source switching menu since 12.4

was / want:

macOS input source switching menu prior to 12.3

Is there a way to force preview to open files in the center of the screen

Posted: 02 Jul 2022 07:16 AM PDT

Whenever I open a pdf file with preview the window goes automatically to the most left side of the screen, is there a way to make it open files in the center? In case it's relevant I use an external monitor.

Remote iOS Upgrade Through MDM Bypassing Welcome Screens

Posted: 02 Jul 2022 11:08 AM PDT

I administrate an MDM with over 95 locations and 16,000 iOS tablets, distributed globally.

I have remote access to upgrade iOS to any devices centrally, but also the local admins can push to their specific locations/tablets.

All tablets are locked into Single App Mode (kiosk).

The question is, Is there a setting or way to push an iOS upgrade with MDM to the tablet and it upgrade without the Welcome screens displaying and forcing a local response on every tablet?

In the Find My App - why does Macbook show a random time in the middle of the night?

Posted: 02 Jul 2022 08:17 AM PDT

I have family sharing on, and one of my own laptops was showing a timestamp of 3am, but I was asleep then.

Will a macbook ever periodically "ping" its location, or is it exclusively when it is being requested? I asked all my family members if anyone was awake then and looking at the app, but everyone said they were asleep.

Is there another reason that a macbook may show a time when it's not actively in use, or if its location is not being requested?

OmniGraffle: change characters spacing for text to occupy surrounding rectangle how?

Posted: 02 Jul 2022 10:01 AM PDT

Is there a simple command in OmniGraffle 6.0 x for (a) stretching the character spaces or (b) increasing font size of a word inside a rectangle (enlarge their distances) such that the word fills the entire rectangle nicely?

I would like to achieve an effect of the following kind: a square split into equal upper and lower rectangles; shorter word (e.g. "one") in upper, longer word (e.g. "four") in lower rectangle; words should align at their left and right margins and character spacings and/or font sizes should should remain even.
