Stop iCloud from restoring deleted files in IntelliJ Posted: 02 Jul 2022 05:09 AM PDT Sometimes I delete files directly in IntelliJ at the left hand project panel. For example classes or packages. I also clean the project after deleting the files. Unfortunately the deleted files appear again after few days or weeks. I guess they got restored from iCloud since some of the files have an ".icloud" appendix. How can I permanently delete these files? |
Can’t log into my 2017 macbook pro Posted: 01 Jul 2022 11:31 PM PDT I can not log into my mac, it stops here after I enter the password, i have tried restarting it more than 10 times but it still stays here after I entered the password. I tried reinstalling the os, everything was fine, reinstall successfully, but then it keeps stopping here after i enter the password |
Foobar2000 Mobile App shows Album Name in All Caps Posted: 02 Jul 2022 05:13 AM PDT I am using the Foobar2000 music app on iPhone 7 It is displaying one of my album names in all CAPS. I have edited the track data so that the album name is in title case, which I can see is correct in the foobar2000 windows app. These are .FLAC files. Any idea where the mobile app is getting the All Caps from? This isn't happening with other albums in my library. |
How do I tell Siri which device I'm talking to? Posted: 01 Jul 2022 09:33 PM PDT When I have multiple Apple devices in the same room, and I use "Hey Siri", sometimes the wrong device will respond. This isn't always a problem, because a lot of things work the same no matter which device does them. However, sometimes I'll hear something like "You'll need to unlock your iPad first" when I intended the request for my iPhone, which was unlocked recently enough that my request would have gone through fine. Or even more annoying, I'll be in the same room as my dad's HomePod, and "Hey Siri" won't work on any of my devices because they assume I'm talking to the HomePod, even though it's not on my Apple ID. (No Siri, remind me, not my dad.) Is there any way for me to specify, when I say "Hey Siri", which device I'm talking to, so I can be sure the correct one will respond? I've tried saying e.g. "Hey Siri, iPhone, [...]" but that doesn't seem to work. |
How to disable default keyboard in macOS Monterey? Posted: 02 Jul 2022 05:19 AM PDT When I connect my bluetooth keyboard and place on top of my default mac keyboard, there are some keys that get pressed, to avoid this - I'm trying to look for an option to disable my default keyboard. The open source solution Karabiner gives some errors for the latest macOS. |
Posted: 01 Jul 2022 08:10 PM PDT I have followed the instructions here to turn on "Find My Mac", but it doesn't work. I have a Macbook Pro 14 inch 2021, with MacOS 12.4 Moneterey installed. I alread had location services turned on, and then specifically enabled it for "Find My". Now, when I go into Apple ID -> iCloud, and try to turn on "Find My Mac", I get a popup asking if I want to allow find my mac, and then for a second it says "Settin up..." ... and then nothing. See this GIF. It looks like someone else has had this exact problem, so I tried the various things in that post. Namely:
All without success. I should note that I also have looked on my other devices and they definitely can't see this Mac on the "Find My" app. So this is a real failure and not just a UI quirk. (Aside: Is there a command line command or tool to enable these settings? I ask because, completely unrelated to this issue and on my work computer, I was able to fix an issue where I couldn't enable screen sharing with Google Meets by running a command line tool.... but that tool was only for Accessibility options.) Anyway, I know this is a long shot but hopefully someone is out there who eventually sees this and can answer. I'm going to try to call Apple Support tomorrow and try my luck with them. If I find a solution I'll be back to enlighten y'all. |
macOS Mail app: is there a way to prevent local storage? Posted: 02 Jul 2022 06:39 AM PDT I'd like to use the macOS Mail app for a few different reasons. But each time Mail launches (say, after clicking a mailto: link or if I'm taking a look at app preferences), the app begins downloading 15+ years of Gmail history to my drive. It's not that I don't have the drive space, but I have several practical reasons for keeping the the individual 'file count' of the drive as low as possible (each email is stored as an individual file in Mail's local storage folders). Gmail's POP function does not have much in the way of settings, though I imagine local (client) settings are what will make the difference here. I do notice that Gmail's IMAP settings have an option to limit client-side folders to 1000 items (at the fewest), but then I cannot use the Mail client to access history older than whatever 1000 files happens to be in a given folder. Even if I did go the IMAP route, a 15+ year old Gmail account would make this far from what I'm looking to do (turning local storage off altogether for Mail). So I'm wondering if I just need to keep periodically deleting Mail's local storage folders -- or if someone here knows of a solution before I perhaps send this to Apple/feedback. Thanks in advance! p.s. Unlinking this email address from Mail (or finding a workaround in terms of how much is/isn't stored on the server) won't be practical in this case unfortunately |

Reverse scrolling per individual mouse Posted: 02 Jul 2022 05:41 AM PDT I know this is a thing for mouse and trackpad and I know the application "Scroll Reverser". What I'm looking for is an app that let me set the scroll direction per individual mouse. I only use the second mouse with the physical scroll wheel for blender and would like it to be reversed. Just got used to it with the Magic Mouse because it's intuitive like on the trackpad, but the second I have a scroll wheel in my hand this feels wrong. Any suggestions? Slightly off topic for the title, but an app that would let me set scroll direction per app would also work for me. |
Is there a bash command to make a screen text box? Posted: 02 Jul 2022 03:04 AM PDT I am writing a small application for Intel OS X to display a range of internal temperatures but I have not been able to find a satisfactory text box command/application. Applescript works but the box has a mind of its own - only one width (which is too wide), goes where it wants and insist upon being on top. A Terminal window is best but tedious to make entirely risk free. I am looking for a free of charge text window, preferably generated by a pre-compiled bash command, with a narrow border and without buttons, decoration, title bar, scroll bar etc. It should be manually and programmatically resizable or auto-fit the text. It should be possible to both manually and programmatically position it anywhere. It must be small and self-contained so that it can be put inside an application and not limited to being installed on a particular OS/computer. Preferably it should work on all Intel OS X Mac computers. Code for Applescript solution: Code for Terminal solution: |
M1 MacBook Pro Drops Wifi Periodically Posted: 02 Jul 2022 02:45 AM PDT My 2021 M1 Pro MacBook Pro drops wifi periodically, it does this on all networks I've tried, including at the Apple Store. Sometimes it automatically reconnects, sometimes it doesn't. Turning off bluetooth significantly reduces the frequency of the problem but doesn't eradicate it. Obviously I'd like a solution where I can have bluetooth on. How can I diagnose this further? Here's some other misc notes:
I've run the wireless diagnostics tool. It often detects the drop and generates an output file. The Apple Genius said this would "be something for engineering". I'm not sure if there's anything I can do with this file? Can anyone advise how I can diagnose this further and isolate the offending software? |
How to diagnose too many kernel panics on a 2017 21" Retina iMac running Monterey Posted: 01 Jul 2022 08:12 PM PDT This on a 2017 Retina 21" iMac Running MacOS 12.4 The day before I installed 12.4 I had a kernel panic. The day after I installed it I had four kernel panics in rapid succession in the space of a half hour. Since then I have had more. Sometimes a day goes by without one, sometimes there are several in a day. I have read and, for the most part, followed this: If Your Mac Restarts and a Message Appears The Kernel-YYYY-MM-DD-hhmmss.panic logs (/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/) offer no clues as to what software/hardware might be causing the panics So far I have: • Removed an external display and adapter • Removed a USB hub • Notremoved a non-Apple (Logitech) keyboard as the machine would be useless without it. • Not removed an external drives as the machine would be useless to me without them I started the machine in Recovery Mode and: • Ran Disk First aid on the boot volume: No problems found • Reinstalled MacOS I started the machine in Diagnostics Mode and ran diagnostics: No problems found The only extensions I have are those installed by: • Graphic Converter • Bartender • Dropbox • Google Drive • Markup The external drives that I have not removed have all been running fine on the machine for well over a year. I've had the keyboard for about 18 months. I have attached the first few lines of the most recent panic report. This one happens to show that iStat menus was the panicked task, but I don't think that means much. Every panic reports shows a different process as the panicked task. Any ideas? I have uploaded four .panic files. Complete links: https://mgnewman.com/panic/Kernel-2022-05-27-160620.panic https://mgnewman.com/panic/Kernel-2022-05-27-160805.panic https://mgnewman.com/panic/Kernel-2022-05-27-163709.panic https://mgnewman.com/panic/Kernel-2022-05-27-163923.panic The should be downloadable with curl, or wget or even a web browser. They should be symbolicated: Should be symbolicated, but, AFAIK, they are not. At least on this machine, changing that one NVRAM setting did not have the desired effect on the kernel panic files. MemTest86 Results Safe Mode I booted into Safe Mode; something I'd never done before, so I didn't know what to expect. What I really didn't expect was what a slug the machine was in Safe Mode. It was barely useable. Instead of moving across the screen smoothly, the pointer moved in fits and starts. In text fields the insertion point simply disappeared now and then. I tried to use the machine that way, but was actually grateful when a kernel panic rebooted the machine in regular mode and the machine returned running as smoothly as normal. So weird. Is Safe Mode always like that? |
AppleScript - Click coordinates stopped working Posted: 01 Jul 2022 09:06 PM PDT I use a web-based program that lacks batch actions. This creates the need for repetitive clicking. I wrote a script on Apple's Script Editor that took care of that, it is very simple and worked perfectly. However, as of yesterday it no longer works, for some reason. I'm using Brave browser, but even outside the browser, clicking in general seems to no longer work. I've set different coordinates to click icons on the desktop and whatnot. Nothing works. This is the script: This is the feedback I get under the replies tab of the Script Editor This worked until about a week ago. I did not update anything, and did not change the script. I'm really baffled that it just stopped working. Surely I'm missing something. I'm running MacOS Catalina 10.15.7, on a 2017 13" MacBook Pro. Thank you *edit: Just to be clear, I would appreciate either an alternative method to solve this problem or a possible explanation for why it stopped working. Cheers |
GarageBand is unusable - "Maximum number of tracks (1000)" Posted: 01 Jul 2022 10:01 PM PDT Only weeks after getting it, I can no longer use GarageBand on my brand new MBP 14" M1 Pro (macOS 12.1) because any attempt to create a new project immediately results in the error "Maximum Number of Software Instruments - You have added the maximum number of software instruments tracks (1000)". I also get this error when attempting to create a new track in any existing project. (Obviously I have nowhere near 1000 tracks in any of these projects). I also sporadically get the message on launch: "A plugin has reported a problem. Please quit and restart GarageBand". These two issues began at the same time. After doing some of my own research I tried restarting Core Audio via Can anyone help me? |
Posted: 01 Jul 2022 09:57 PM PDT After receiving my Very pleased with 3840x1600@144Hz except that sometimes red text on a black background or white text on a red background would look eye-strainingly blurry and awful, with weird dark fringing around the edges. After playing with the settings, I discovered that the likely cause was Chroma subsampling; specifically that it was likely that my single Thunderbolt connection was not high-bandwidth enough to drive the display at 144Hz. I stepped it down to 120Hz (which is really all I was looking for anyway, although 60Hz→120Hz is very noticeable, 120Hz→144Hz is barely perceptible, at least to me) and now the fringing seems to be gone. However, I would really like to know if any subsampling is still occurring, and in particular I'd like to be able to experiment with different configurations (is it my dock? my cable? the display interface; i.e. does DisplayPort work better? can I get 144Hz anywhere or is 120 the max without this?) without having to look at subpixels in the iOS magnifier app to determine if compression is still happening. I've looked at the output of Update 2022-03-22: I got a new CalDigit TS4 Dock and, wondering if the higher bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4 would result in less chroma compression, I took a look at 144Hz running through it. No difference that I could see, based on this chroma sampling torture test image. But then I wanted to see if DisplayPort was any better or worse – it was hard to see, but it seemed like I was getting some level of subsampling at every refresh rate, so I plugged the thunderbolt cable back in, and now I don't get subsampling at 144Hz either. So… the entire saga was just a loose thunderbolt connection, maybe? Or some bad persistent state in the display, cleared by power cycling it when I was experimenting? I still really wish I could get a quick report on the display protocol so I didn't need to take multiple comparison pictures every time I made a change! Update 2022-06-09: At some point the signal quality degraded again, and the torture-test image started showing subsampling reliably. So the connection at 144Hz is extremely prone to interference, possibly operating right at the top of the available thunderbolt bandwidth, or... something. Not clear. But I'm down to 120 again for good this time. I'd still love a clear answer as to how to diagnose this properly without guessing... Update 2022-07-01: For unrelated reasons I tried to use the DisplayPort connection again, just to see. And now… it's working great, and even offers me variable refresh rates up to 144Hz, taking advantage of FreeSync. Upon first being plugged in, once again, I saw chroma subsampling. At every refresh rate. But then, cycling back and forth between thunderbolt inputs, I now see no subsampling, again, at every refresh rate. This whole process is crazy-making without any diagnostic tools! I have had some other issues with the dock, and have RMA'd it and will be replacing it this week, so maybe this has something to do with a defect in the dock where it's stepping down to lower display bandwidths because of a fault rather than because this is how it's supposed to work. I've already RMA'd it, and when I receive the replacement I'll conduct these tests again. |
How to reconcile number of photos and disk space used on MacBook Pro vs new iPad Pro Posted: 02 Jul 2022 02:08 AM PDT I have a newly set up iPad pro, 3rd gen, 11 inch that we got new and set up via wireless side by side transfer. Upon plugging it in to MacBook pro Big Sur 11.6, i noticed that the pictures folder on the MacBook shows (left side below on screen shot of Get Info) 34.16 gb and 13,085 items while the iPad (right side of screen shot) shows 18.48 GB and the iPad has 6,695 photos and 71 videos showing synced from the computer. I have deleted the synced photos, soft reset ipad and restart MacBook and re-synced with same results as shown below. Questions: Which is right? Why the difference? How do i reconcile the difference? I have compared manually almost all of the computer folders to the iPad synced folders and have only found about 5 missing picture and .mov files for a total of about 200mb. thank you In the photo folder on the Mac I sync with there are "iPhoto library", "iPod photo cache", "Photo booth library" and "photos library folders". If I exclude those and "get info" on the remainder of the folders, the no. and sizes matches almost exactly to what is being synced to the iPad. The culprit for the greatest difference is the iPod photo cache for about 15gig. The 4 folders are included in the total on the Mac but do not sync to the iPad, hence the difference. |
keep MacBook Pro from powering on unexpectedly Posted: 01 Jul 2022 08:10 PM PDT Powered off 2016 15" MacBook Pro running Big Sur unexpectedly powers on. Happens whether lid is open or closed. Shortcuts stopped to work when Dvorak + macOS BigSur 11.4 Posted: 02 Jul 2022 04:06 AM PDT I upgraded my macOS and after it the shortcuts stopped to work, on all apps! It's like the Command + N is not respecting the current selected keyboard layout, it's using the QWERTY layout for the shortcuts. I have been using Dvorak layout more than 8 years, and it's the first time that this is happening. I am not sure if it was because of the update or not. Anyone know how could I fix it? |
Bootcamp - Windows 7 Installation Help Posted: 01 Jul 2022 11:05 PM PDT I have a mid 2011 21.5" iMac with High Sierra, the disk drive I think has an issue, it writes to DVDs but can't read. I successfully burned Windows ISO to a DVD+ disk but the drive reads it as blank DVD, I confirmed this by using another pc. I went to the USB drive way, I modified the BootCamp plist file to enable USB drive, I successfully created windows installation drive with BC, sat the partition, but when the Mac boots, it goes to a black screen, with a message "no bootable device". I couldn't find any way to read from the USB drive, I used both USB 2.0 and 3.0. Any help would be highly appreciated. |
Why has the basic search function on external drives stopped working for one particular drive? Posted: 02 Jul 2022 12:00 AM PDT I use several NTFS external disks with my Catalina Mac (for PC file exchanges). None of them are Spotlight-indexed, and that's fine as it is not necessary: macOS has no trouble seaching the disks without Spotlight. All of a sudden one of the external disks stopped being searchable. macOS is unable to find any files. On my other external NTFS disks there is no problem with the macOS search function. (and Spotlight is not enabled there either) (Rebuilding the Spotlight index is N/A as Spotlight is not used.) I have the feeling something in my macOS is messed up regarding that particular external drive. Pehaps a setting that got corrupted? Is there such a thing as a .plist or so for a drive that can be deleted and recreated? What could be the cause of the basic search function not working on an external USB drive? |
iPhone: Set recurring reminder to get off an app Posted: 02 Jul 2022 01:02 AM PDT Instagram has become a major distraction for me. I will spend hours upon hours mindlessly scrolling, allowing what little time I could have spent doing things I enjoy to slip away. I don't want to delete the app since I sometimes use it to message people. Is there a way, perhaps using Shortcuts, to check if I'm on Instagram, if so, set a reminder (e.g. "Get off!") to pop up every 10 minutes, and once I'm off, delete the reminder? |

How to download only recent mails in Apple Mail.app on El Capitan? Posted: 02 Jul 2022 06:24 AM PDT I have an account at Hotmail/Outlook.com and I have lots of mails there since 2006 (dozens of GB). I am using IMAP and I don't want Mail.app to download them all, also because I have really slow connection (and I dont care about my emails from 2006.) Is there a way to make Mail.app download only mails more recent than, for example, 10 or 30 days ago? |
Avoid download 100.000 mails from gmail when using Apple Mail Posted: 02 Jul 2022 06:29 AM PDT When I am using Apple Mail, it insists on downloading the full body and attachment 100.000+ email I have on gmail, which eats up my hard drive, and makes the interactive search function annoyingly slow. Is there any way to make Mail only create indexes for Subject/From fields, and keep all the actual mail content remotely? Possibly, it could cache "new" mail locally (from the last week or so), but to cache the full body of every single mail from years ago is just insane with the amount of mail one has these days. |
Writing a Mail.app rule to say "do not download from server" Posted: 02 Jul 2022 06:26 AM PDT I have a POP based mail account from my ISP. What I need is a way to say "If the Subject contains XXX then do not download it from the server". This was simple in Windows Mail, but there doesn't appear to be this rule action in mail.app Any ideas? (I guess something to say, leave it on the server, and delete it from my inbox" might also be appropriate). EDIT: Is there really no alternative solution to this? Even with a mail plugin? Perhaps I should rephrase: I need a way to not leave certain messages on the POP server. |
