Forwarding a US phone number (verizon iPhone) to an iPhone with EU SIM card

I plan on traveling in Europe and getting a local SIM card, and placing it into my unlocked iPhone 13. I presume that will give me a local phone number. Is there a way to get calls to my US phone number to ring my EU-based phone with the local SIM card?

I'm fine with this happening via the phone network, via an app, or FaceTime, or some other mechanism. The iPhone will usually be on WiFi while in the EU (in addition to the local SIM card/phone network). I'm ok with missing forwarded calls while the phone is not on WiFI (if relevant).

How do I make my mac remember projector color settings?

I'm fighting with my Mac over projector color settings.

When I go to Settings → Displays → Display Settings → Colour Profile → Projector..., I get a nice panel for adjusting the projector gamma and white balance:

The problem is, after I move the slider up, which makes everything brighter (good!), the projector brightness smoothly goes down to the original level over the next few seconds. The slider stays up, but the brightness isn't the same. When I click the slider again, the display becomes brighter again, but again only for a while. How do I make my Mac remember this setting?

I also tried various color profiles from the list, but none of them gives me the brightness I want and I also didn't find a way to control the gamma manually. And my projector has no brightness/gamma setting either :(

I'm using macOS Monterey 12.4.

How to keep transparency on fullscreen windows?

I'm trying to put Emacs in transparency mode. It works, but only when it's window is not on fullscreen mode :

but as soon as I fullscreen the window, it breaks it :

Non-transparent

The reason I'm posting this here and not in the Emacs stack exchange is because it do the same with other apps such as the terminal. I think it's a MacOS thing that I would like to change. Some ideas ?

My iPhone 13 loses the internet when connected to my Macbook

I tried different cables and also habs. My new iPhone 13 loses Internet immediately when I plug in the cable to connect it to my MacBook. What could be the problem?

Internal Links in Apple Pages not working when exporting to Epub

I made my own TOC, with links to different parts of the document. None of those links work when I export to Epub but they all work inside Pages.

I have tried with Reflow - No Reflow - Enable TOC - not enable TOC. No change.

What can be the cause?

This is for a book of poetry, and while it is not so important where poems end it is important they always start on their own page and are not part of another poem's page.

So I know that when I export to Epub if I select Fixed Layout it should not reflow, but it still seems to reflow a bit. Obviously some reflowing would need to be done because what if you have more content than can fit on a page, then it should reflow to the next page, but I am getting the scenario where page 1 is short and then the content that in Pages is on page 2 starts on halfway down page 1.

What I would like is:

if I have text that starts on the top of a page that we keep that page structure, so that

if page 23 is half a page, then page 24 does not start halfway down page 23 but is on its own page.

if page 24 goes over two pages then page 25 does not start immediately where page 24 is done but is on its own page.

It would be optimal if I could just add my own hard coded page breaks - that is to say that will force it to move that poem to its own page but not ever create a blank page.

SSH won't work until the local account is logged in

I've a Mac mini running Big Sur Monterey to which I cannot connect via ssh unless the user has his session started.

I guess this is, like on ubuntu, due to the authorized_keys file not been accessible until the session is started, but I don't seem to be able to apply a similar approach, and it is becoming an issue.

The Mac is being used as a server, and if for some reason the session is closed or the machine has to be restarted, I'm forced to connect a monitor, mouse and keyboard to start the session. The problem here is that this has already happened while working remotely, so I completely lost the access to the machine.

Is there a way to fix this?

iTerm+ssh mouse actions suddenly showing text instead

Basically what the title says. Something changed and I can't figure out what, and I made a new iTerm profile.

When I do anything with my mouse in an ssh connection in iTerm (scrolling, trying to select text, etc), instead of the actions occurring I get text like:

> 65;50;28M65;50;28M65;86;46M65;17;50M32;

etc.

Never had this happen before, any ideas?

Apple Pencil Pressure sensitivity is always at max, but the tilt is still working [closed]

I have two ipads, and one Apple Pencil each. When using one of my pencils, I realized that suddenly the pressure could only be at max. Disconnected that one, and used the other. Worked great!

Until about a few hours to a day-ish where it turned out it was actually not perfectly fine because it had the exact same issue. I've unscrewed the nibs on both who-knows how many times now, the inside was clean but I still blew gently at multiple angles just in case on both, switched pencils about 3 times after the initial switch, did forget Apple Pencil, turned Bluetooth off, and then reset my iPad multiple times not counting the amount I did individually, and tested when the nib fit "snugly, but not too tight", along with very loose and very tight.

Nothing works! I've done this in ProCreate, GoodNotes, and Notability with what I'm pretty sure was pressure sensitive and not just from the speed. So because of that I can see it's not a problem with the apps or my iPad, and I also tested out both pencils on a family member's iPad Pro. Nope! Didn't work.

Something interesting I noticed though, was how the tilt worked perfectly fine. But then how did both just stop working one after another in quick succession? There's no way it's because of the iPad, but then how did both pencils just… die? And why does their tilt still work?

I asked the same family member, and they said that most likely it was a problem with the software, but I haven't been able to find anyone else with he exact same issue. Some have only 2 levels, others need to press really hard, etc., but I think I only found 1 with the exact same issue and apple support just said, "hey screw the nib on".

We are traveling currently, and so it wouldn't really be a good idea to get it to an Apple Store, plus no one wants to spend their one vacation, their very nice break which they were supposed to relax and have fun drawing in, just driving for nearly an hour and sorting out a huge hassle, only to find out they could've all done this at home much quicker without the stress and waste of time to the employees and us.

So do we really have to go to a store, or have we exhausted all possible options? Is it even an iPad OS issue? If so, then when will the bug fix come? I've already contacted apple support in a chat, they just go, "sorry, can you please visit this store?" And has anyone else had a similar problem? Thanks!

Incremental rsync to encrypted APFS USB drive extremely slow

I use rsync to create incremental backups of my backup dir (containing symlinks to all relevant local dirs) to various machines and/or drives:

rsync -ivrLtzS --delete-during --progress --link-dest=../latest /home/Backup [target]

The command is part of a wrapper script which updates the latest symlink after each run to point to the most recent target dir.

The backup contains ~ 150.000 files and takes ~ 20 GB of disk space. Backing up incrementally to a server (via ssh) or to a local (encrypted) disk image takes between 4 and 10 minutes. But backing up to USB drives (APFS encrypted) took ~ 4 hours for the initial incremental run, and 8 to 12 hours now.

After a quick start, rsync always seems to hang on some random file for hours before finally completing the sync.

Could this be related to APFS/encryption? Or to USB? I recently read about slow write speeds to disk images, but writing to my encrypted disk image works fine (s. above).

What is the best Xcode version for C++ development

Currently I use Eclipse on my Mac to develop with plain C++. However, I've been getting quite a few problems with it, but held back bc of my low disk space. Recently, I've freed a lot of disk space and wish to switch over to Xcode due to multiple advantages. But even after I freed like 30 gigs of space, I can't install the newest version avaliable of Xcode that is even larger than the entire Big Sur OS.

So, what is the best Xcode version for C++ development that preferably isn't that large?

Side question: What is the newest version of Xcode that has new features/a new feature for C++ development?

update iterm2 title with SSH User & Hostname

How can I get iTerm2 to update the title of each tab with the User & Hostname of the remote SSH host? currently the best I can achieve is "ssh user@hostname" and with multiple tabs this makes it impossible to differentiate between them as it gets to the point where only the "ssh" part is visible

bluetoothd repeatedly pops up on nettop

Unable to remove symbol from mac menu bar

I have the symbol from the trend micro security agent in my menu bar and can't remove it. I tried to remove it via command + drag into the bin and also closing it in the activity monitor app didn't help. I also don't have any other folders or apps from trend micro on my mac anymore. Please help :)

calling emacs from applescript

I have been trying to make the below script work in mac Catalina .

when trying to save the script as application a pop-up asking Choose Application asks for Where is Emacs? pops up . I tried to navigate to /usr/local/bin where my emacs are located but couldn't find the app . I clicked cancel and saved the app but whenever i try to access that app the very same popup is coming to view . What have i done wrong here ?

Can't get rid of a disk partition on mac

I have a base model MacBook Pro with M1 and 256gib of storage. I tried macOS Ventura and it was fine, but I didn't like it much so I reverted to Monterey by adding a partition and installing it here. Today I wanted to remove the old partitions but they couldn't unmount and begone.

What should I do?

I want to bind a launchd service so that it's accessible only to the machine where the service is running via socket activation; no external network access.

I have a .plist in ~/Library/LaunchAgents that contains:

This website at the top of the search bar keeps appearing no matter what, see the screenshot.

Clearing history and website data doesn't help.

I'm even thinking about creating a new Apple ID.

BTW, my current Apple ID had an email address changed in the past. Maybe that's a clue (a bug somewhere?).

Karabiner Elements Fn + F keys to volume control on Mac

I'm using a Durgod keyboard (replacing an old Mac keyboard) and would like to have Fn+F11 to lower volume and Fn+F12 to increase volume. Those are the keys I use for volume control on the Mac keyboard. It doesn't work right now with the Durgod keyboard. How do I make this possible using Karabiner Elements?

Is there any possible way whatsoever to install your own (not purchased) custom "alert tone" / notification signal (not ringtones!) on an iPhone?

I have a very simple question about custom alert tones on iPhones, which there doesn't seem to be any good Google hits for:

Is there any possible way whatsoever to install your own custom "alert tone" / notification signals (not ringtones!) on an iPhone?

And when I say "your own custom", I do not mean purchasing alert tones from the Apple store, but rather, importing them from whatever audio you have in your iTunes library, or somewhere else.

There are a lot of apps for making custom ringtones (including Garageband), but none of them seem to be able to save these as "alert tones" (notification tones) in iOS, but rather just ringtones.

The problem with this is that most other apps that allow you to customize their notification sounds (e.g. Signal, Telegram, WhatsApp etc), only allow you to choose from the "alert tones" list in iOS, rather than the "ringtones" list, which makes this distinction critical indeed.

There a lots and lots of tutorials and apps online that claim to be able to install custom alert tones / notification tones, but every single one that I have found end up installing a custom "ringtone" after all. :-(

If the answer to my question is "no", an extra bonus question would be: Why on earth would Apple lock down such a feature?

Bluetooth device connected but not showing up in Output Device

In order to remove another audio device from my Mac, I deleted the HAL folder from Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/ (This is the advice I got from a quick google search, I don't understand the mechanics of it at all)

It removed the device I wanted to remove but now my Galaxy buds are not working. They connect to the bluetooth successfully for a few seconds and then disconnect automatically. Even when they are connected, the headphones do not show up in the list of Output devices.

If someone has any solutions, please help me out.

How to exclude docker files from time machine backups

I don't need back up of my docker files. How do i exclude them from time machine backups

I see people mentioning /Users/david/Library/Containers/com.docker.docker folder but that does not exists on my machine.

Docker engine version: 20.10.2 running on Big Sur: 11.2

Update: Found the location

My virtual machine appears to be here. I added it to the list of folders to be excluded. However that folder is not shown in the Time Machine UI.

macOS Big Sur 11.2.1
Cant add any account to Mail, Calendar, etc..
For example, when I try add gmail account to my Mail and follow all steps:

Mail app, Google

Authentication Failed

Same time when I log in with this account to google in browser, I see in this google account access for 3rd party untrusted applications is enabled:

Untrusted google apps

It is not needed, google already gives access to my MacBook Pro macOS without this setting. But I found lot "solutions" in Internet to set this security settings to On. This is not help in my case.

How to fix this bug which goes with macOS looks like couple of years?

Too large Other Volume in Container

My Mac show disk full and realized that I can use only 100 GB (Out of 500 GB). I checked Storage and realized that there are a lot of space for "Other Volume in Container".

So I check diskutil list in terminal and found below

I know APFS Volume disk1s5 and disk1s6 but I am not sure what is disk1s1. It is not visualized it in DiskUtil also. Does someone know how to increase available volume? Or how to delete that disk1s1 volume?

Horrible Sound in Bootcamp

The sound on my Windows 10 bootcamp installation on my 2019 13-inch Touch Bar MBP is HORRIBLE! It sounds muted and has no bass at all volume levels. I've tried reinstalling the drivers, but it didn't help at all.

When I enter commands in the terminal I get: "username is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported."

When I try to enter commands into the terminal I get this message "myusername is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported." It started when I tried to edit my host-file. What do I do to fix this? I want to spoof my MAC address. I have the newest version of OS X. myusername is not actually my real username.

How do I edit current shell command in VI

I have seen in blogs on Linux machines you can edit the current bash shell command in VI (or whatever the EDITOR is set to) by pressing ctrl-x,ctrl-e.

This doesn't seem to work on 10.8. Any ideas on how to edit the current bash command in the default editor?

How can I crop a video?

How does one remove a black border around a video. The input video has the size 720x576 and has the output video should be 720x480. I need to crop away 96 pixels from top and bottom.

I have gazed through this list of video tools for Mac, but I'm unsure which tools can do this. I have tried MPEG Streamclip and avidemux2, but they doesn't seem capable of it.

Preferable a free tool.
