App Store Mac OS Monterey 12.5 downloads 12.4 Posted: 24 Jul 2022 01:03 AM PDT Checking the Mac App Store for Monterey I can see that the version is listed as 12.5. However, upon downloading and doing a clean install the resulting version is 12.4. Anybody else experiencing this? Is 12.5 just a delta download via software update? |
Error ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'timewheel' python Posted: 23 Jul 2022 11:34 PM PDT I have installed timewheel and also timewheel-scheduler on my mac. Trying the following https://pypi.org/project/timewheel-scheduler/ However I am encountering the following error |
MACBOOK AIR, stuck on windows! Posted: 23 Jul 2022 09:44 PM PDT I was attempting to download Windows on my MacBook and it was successful so far. The Windows desktop loaded in and everything. Now came to the part where Bootcamp was once again asking to install, I said yes but halfway while it was installing it suddenly cancelled out on me. I also didn't have network since mine was not appearing and I figured I would fix it afterwards. How do I get back to MacOS now? I still have BootCamp files in the files for windows. |
Keep having Run time error 53 when opening Microsoft Office 2021 Posted: 23 Jul 2022 08:40 PM PDT Keep having Run time error 53 when opening Microsoft Office 2021. I have reinstalled the Office completely and it did not help, tried to delete some files from the office pathway as suggested in other forums, and I don't even remember what else I tried but nothing helped. It looks like I have to live with this stupid bug for the rest of my life ! Run-time error '53': File not found: /Library/Application Support/Adobe/ MACPDFM/MacPDFM.framework/Versions/A/MacPDFM |
Maps not rendering in Firefox and Safari on MacBook Pro 15" early 2011 Posted: 23 Jul 2022 05:11 PM PDT I have a MacBook Pro 15" early 2011 running macOS Catalina with dosdude1's Catalina patcher. The dedicated GPU is inactivated with the non-permanent solution circulating elsewhere. Ever since I upgraded (perhaps already in Mojave, but not sure about that) I'm unable to use Google Maps and most other map services in Firefox and Safari. In Google Maps, the map view renders correctly, but I'm unable to click any points of interest, and if I move around the map it lags heavily and soon turns black; basically unusable. However, in Opera Google Maps works perfectly fine! The computer does heat up and the fans start spinning, but at least Google Maps is fully functional and runs smoothly. Apple's own Maps app also runs without any trouble at all. I also have two MacBook Pro 13" mid-2012 also running Catalina (officially supported), where Google Maps works perfectly fine on both Firefox and Safari, so it doesn't seem to be due to lacking browser support. Any idea what could be causing this? I assume the inactivated GPU may have something to do with it, but why does it work fine in Opera? |
Why can't I set up Airtag via my Macbook pro M1 since it is able to run iPhone programs natively? Posted: 23 Jul 2022 05:35 PM PDT The question is in the topic; the case is the following. I have several macbooks and no iphones at all - I just don't like them. I have a cat and I ordered an airtag to follow him if he passes outside. Macbooks pro M1 seem to run very similar hardware as iphones; even native support for running applications is there. I wonder why couldn't I just set up the airtag on macbook since exactly that device all the time reaches the airtag. It seems to me like a ridiculous attempt from apple to lock airtag not even to "apple trademark" but to make every apple user to buy an iphone and it's quite disappointing. I would like to have any option to track my cat via macbook m1, mini m1 or mac studio. Does anyone know any way to do it? (as it seems, xcode emulation for iphones is quite limited and the application "find my" for iphone version is hidden for macos users). Maybe there is a hack that would allow to install "find my" application with version from iphone, not mac os? Thanks in advance; I hope someone could manage to solve this puzzle since apple blocked this post in their own discussion pages. |

Posted: 23 Jul 2022 03:45 PM PDT I have a MBP mid-2015 running 10.14.6 and want to upgrade to a Scandisk Extreme Pro 1TB. When I install the drive and try to boot up using Cmd+R, a window with only "Internet Recovery" pops up. However there is a note with the drive, that internet recovery is not supported. Where do I find the other option "recover from Time Machine, bootable disk, etc? I wanted to install from Time Machine (2TB Time Capsule) As far as I know, Time Machine back-ups are bootable? What am I doing wrong here? P.S. I have the original SSD in a USB enclosure (migrate from a different Mac) but this option is not offered. |

Universal Control Stopped Working (12.5) Posted: 23 Jul 2022 04:08 PM PDT Every update Universal Control stops working. There is another thread here: Universal Control Stopped Working (12.4) Trying the usual steps:
Nothing works. I called Apple and they said you need to re-install the OS again (I just re-installed a week ago!!). It seems every OS update universal control stops working. Is there any solution to this other than to format and reinstall? EDIT: I managed to get 1 iPad Air4 to connect and captured these logs: https://gist.github.com/rgaufman/7ff744d6d4b412544ecb4da660c4f7d9 When I switch on the iPad Mini 5, the Air4 disconnects immediately and then struggles to reconnect. Alert me if my mic input reaches a certain level Posted: 23 Jul 2022 11:04 PM PDT My housemate complains that I speak too loud (when having phone calls or during Zoom meetings). After failing to consciously control my voice level many times, I decided to ask for help by making this post. I would like to create an automated script (e.g. apple script & Automator) to alert/notify me if my mic input reaches a certain voice level. I tried using those audio editor apps like Voicemeeter or Audacity. They have a sound level indicator that will turn red when the sound reaches a certain level. However, I cannot constantly monitor those apps during phone calls/meetings. It will be very helpful for me to receive a ping/alert. I oftentimes wear a headphone for phone calls/meetings, so you can safely assume the mic is always on when the detection is needed. |
How to prevent MacBook Pro notch from hiding menu bar icons (from the right) Posted: 23 Jul 2022 07:37 PM PDT In macOS Monterey it seems that menu bar entries can only occupy the space from the right corner to the notch in the middle. If you add more menu bar entries they just get hidden and you don't have any chance to see/interact with them. Considering that the spacing has been increased (Can the spacing of menu bar apps be modified in Big Sur?) this is really a big problem. Menubar-living tools like iStatMenu are hardly usable. So my question boils down to: How to force macOS to really show all menu bar icons? (be it by overflowing to the left side of the notch, decreasing spacing between the icons, 2-line menu bar, whatever) |
How to fix "undefined symbols" for compiling mplayer Posted: 24 Jul 2022 01:01 AM PDT When I try to compile mplayer on MacOS (12.4) I get an error Any ideas how to fix this? I did run just before that. |
Editing Accent Shortcuts (overring) Posted: 23 Jul 2022 06:01 PM PDT I've been doing some linguistics work for a side project, and I'm having trouble typing some characters efficiently, namely those with overrings on them. For most accent types, like the acute (Opt+E) and umlaut (Opt+U), I can simply type in the combination and get the desired symbol. However, this same process does not work with overrings. I can type the overring A, "å", with the Opt+A shortcut. However, I cannot do the same with overring E, "e̊", and overring O, "o̊". Weirdly, these are also not available by holding down the letters and selecting them from the alternate forms menu (for instance by holding down the letter E). Is there any way to get these letters more efficiently? Right now I am simply copy-pasting them, but this is somewhat slow. Thank you in advance. I have some day-to-day computer skills, but nothing too technical for reference. I hope everything is clear. |
What causes Apple Mail to repeatedly quit? Posted: 23 Jul 2022 08:03 PM PDT One of the senior I help reports that on her 2011 MB Pro running El Capitan 10.11.6, Mail keeps crashing. She will open Mail, read two or three incoming emails, click on the next email to read and Mail will crash. This happens repeatedly. Each time Mail quits, in the report to be sent to Apple this is prominent: Exception Type: EXC_BAD _ACCESS (SIGSEGV) Exception Type: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0X000000000018 Exception Type: EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY I Googled this and the only thing useful I found was the suggestion that perhaps this might be connected with SIP; we checked and her is turned on. I told her, tomorrow morning, when her mails comes in, to restart in Safe Mode, read her email, and see if the same thing happens or not. Will report back with her results. In the meantime, can anyone suggest anything to try that might fix this??? |
mail app changing the automatic text in replies and forwarded emails Posted: 23 Jul 2022 10:08 PM PDT When you reply to an email (in the Apple Mail app on osx), the original email text is prepended by a line: "On Jun 20, 2022, at 9:36 AM, ... wrote:" How can I change this text? More specifically can it be changed based on the account I am replying from? I work in a multi-language environment and I use different accounts to communicate with people with different languages. I prefer americans have their weird way of date formatting, others have the text in their own language with different date/time formatting. |
Is there a way to script to mark Mails as read directly from the notification popup Posted: 23 Jul 2022 11:01 PM PDT I get a lot of emails in a day, most of them I don't even need to read. I will the info I need just from the notification. Is there a way to script the clicking of "mark as read" from the notification pop up? That way I can then assign that script to a keyboard shortcut. |
Syncing tab groups in Safari Tech Preview Posted: 23 Jul 2022 11:32 PM PDT It seems that only Safari is sync tab groups between devices. Safari Technology Preview does not seem to share them. Is there a trick? Was it just disabled for STP? At worst, is there any handy one-off want to bulk transfer tab groups? The problem: https://imgur.com/a/MX1tUPL |
How much memory/cpu is mds_stores consuming for you? Posted: 23 Jul 2022 04:06 PM PDT I'm trying to figure out if the spotlight process "mds_stores" is consuming more resources than it should be. I've turned spotlight on and off and reindexed everything but it's still regularly using between 40 and 80% of the CPU on my lightly loaded system and chewing through insane amounts of memory even after a reboot. Right now, the real memory and private memory it's consuming is over 32 GB on a 64 GB machine. This doesn't seem normal to me. As far as I can tell, Spotlight finished indexing my drive over a day ago yet mds_stores is still consuming a bunch of resources. I've told Spotlight to ignore my external drive and the caches. Is there anything else I can do? |
Hard drive full no matter what I try Posted: 23 Jul 2022 02:01 PM PDT I have run into the issue where no matter what files/applications I delete I cannot actually free up any disk space on my Early 2014 Macbook Air with 128GB of SSD storage. The most recent exercise was to delete Xcode ~10GB. Before the delete, the storage summary showed 3.6GB of free space. After the delete, the storage summary showed ~4.8GB of free space. What did change was the allocation between "Applications" and "System". Before the delete, System was 82GB, and Applications was 20GB, afterwards, Applications went down to 11GB, and System went up to 92GB. Here are the items I have tried / won't consider trying:
So hopefully someone has encountered this issue and found a substantive solution. I am personally wondering if the "cloud" drives I have installed are just consuming all of the free space (I have two providers). For reference, I am running macOS 10.14 (Mojave)and I am unable to install the latest update because I cannot free up enough space on the system to do so! |
Posted: 23 Jul 2022 05:01 PM PDT My goal is to build a station for my local dancing school with an audio interface for old iPads, iPhones and USB-C devices (Such as the iPad Pro, Android Tablets and Phones and hopefully the next iPhone) The "station" needs to charge the mobile device and pass through USB-Data. At the moment, it is solved with the Camera Connection Kit (Charging+USB-Port to Lightning), which is plugged into a Power adapter and to the USB-Audio-Interface. However, this solution obviously only works for the old ipads and iPhones, but when a dance instructor comes and wants to connect an iPad pro or - god beware - an android device with USB-C, they completely mess up the system because they unplug all cables and then don't know how to replug them. The question is: is there a way to have a single cable, preferably USB-C that charges and carries data and then a simple adapter or adapter cable to lighting? Are there any USB-C Docks that would work when adapted to lightning or do we need active components when adapting from lightning to usb c? |
Photos: Import All New Items doesn't work Posted: 23 Jul 2022 06:36 PM PDT I have over 30,000 photos on my iPhone 8 Plus. Photos Library on my MacBook Pro is currently empty. I tried to import all photos from my iPhone to the Photos app but had a lot of problems. The first few times it was stuck at around either 13,000 or 15,000 photos, now the "Import All New Items" button doesn't work at all. I tried restarting both devices (also in safe mode), deleting the Photos Library, and creating a new one, but nothing helped. If anyone has had a similar issue, how did you resolve it? |
Posted: 23 Jul 2022 09:07 PM PDT I receive incoming emails but cannot send out. They stay in the 'Out' box. In Mail Preferences it says 'Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) - in the slot is 'concordmedia.org.uk I am using IMAP system. |
Touch ID Canceled by another authentication Posted: 23 Jul 2022 03:06 PM PDT I've had this issue over multiple iterations of OS. This began for me in High Sierra, followed into Mojave, and now into Catalina. I finally figured I'd deal with it. I've tried everything I've found currently, and nothing works. I've done the following.
Any other ideas before I blow this profile away? This is a work laptop so it'll be a pain to get this back to normal working order. |
Removing Messages from iCloud (but not locally) Posted: 23 Jul 2022 06:17 PM PDT How do I remove my Messages from iCloud only? I want to keep them on my local devices (where I have plenty of space), but remove them from iCloud (where I'm low on space). |
Posted: 23 Jul 2022 02:22 PM PDT Often I find myself needing to take many PNG images and join them into a larger image. Specifically, in this particular case, I'd like to take 2 PNGs of roughly equal width (±2px) and different heights and create a new PNG where the first is above the other. E.g. The join should be seamless. Is there a command line tool/app that does this? Best would be if Preview offers a solution. |
External Monitor not working on MacBook Pro 2015 with HDMI-VGA converter Posted: 23 Jul 2022 03:39 PM PDT I have an HDMI to VGA connector and a Samsung LED screen. The screen is fine, the VGA cable is fine, the connector is fine (tried with different laptops running Ubuntu and Windows). The Problem: I'm plugging the HDMI-VGA connector in my Macbook Pro 2015 but the display doesn't show on the external screen. What I've tried: I went in Displays and tried all given options like extend screen and more. The window also shows the name of the screen "SMB2230" on my Macbook and when I plug-in the HDMI, the screen flickers for a second and dock (on the right) disappears from the built-in display and I can move my mouse to the right and it also disappears but the external monitor shows the message "Check signal cable". I have tried restarting it as well but no luck. Note: The screen is working with other laptops running Windows and Ubuntu with the same connector and the same VGA cable. Please don't tell me that I have to use MiniDisplay port/wire from Apple. |
Google Photos won't stop syncing on iOS Posted: 24 Jul 2022 12:06 AM PDT I have Google Photos installed on my iPhone 6S and would like it to stop automatically syncing my photos. I like to view my pictures but don't want everything backed up. I have gone into settings on the app and turned off "Backup & sync" but if I take a picture it still gets uploaded! I've tried restarting the app and the iPhone but it still does it. |
