Different apps stopped working after updating to Monterey 12.3.1 from 12.2.1 Posted: 02 Apr 2022 07:59 AM PDT Yesterday I have updated my M1 Mac mini from 12.2.1 (or .2) to 12.3.1. I had some work apps opened (vscode, figma, slack, firefox..) so I decided to let the Mac update given that my work day was over. So I start the update, leaving all of my apps opened (as I always do, I mean, I don't close the apps before an update, the OS will close them when it restarts). The updater ask me to reboot and I click reboot now. At this point I leave my desk as I know it can take a bit. I return after some minutes and I see that the Mac has finished updating, cool. I go and try to open Firefox, it starts, but it's stuck, it can't to anything. So I try with vscode, same, crashing. Then I open Slack, crashes. Figma, crashes. I contacted the support, followed the procedure: created new admin user, no luck, safe mode, same errors, reinstall the OS, same errors. During the last contact I had with Apple they said that might be caused by the apps themselves rather than the OS and that I should contact their support but they will open a ticket. Also tried to reinstall all of these apps and there is always the same problem. Tried also to download some more apps which are optimised for M1 which I did not had installed when I updated (downloaded Edge, Brave, vscode insiders, opera) and I always see the same behaviour. The only way of making the apps work is to open them with rosetta. Suggestions? Here's a gif of the problem Edit: this is the output I get from |
“TeXmacs” is damaged and can’t be opened Posted: 02 Apr 2022 05:47 AM PDT When I download the texmacs dmg( why did this happen? what should I do to fix this problem? macOS Monterey – Control Centre memory leak Posted: 02 Apr 2022 04:59 AM PDT is there any solution for the macOS Monterey memory leak? At least since 12.2 the Notification Center process consumes memory and more memory over time, requiring even ≥4 GBs after a few hours of running. Killing the process temporally helps, however, the issue occurs again after some time. |

Permanently change Safari Custom User Agent editing the plist file Posted: 02 Apr 2022 02:32 AM PDT I need help with changing Safari's user agent permanently by editing the plist file Usually one would go to "Preferences > Advanced > Show Developer mode in menu bar." Then "Develop > User Agent > Chrome - windows" for example. However, when you open a new tab or window, this goes back to Default (Safari). This is expected behaviour. In the past, it was possible to edit a line that determined the user agent in "/Users/(user)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist" There was a line called: 'CustomUserAgent'. It's not there anymore. How can I create it (with defaults probably) with the user agent of Chrome (Mac)? Alternatively, is there another way to change it, or has the procedure changed? I called Apple Support to no avail. Thank you. Edit: Forum article for reference. This is an old trick as the CustomUserAgent string is not there anymore http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20090630112653430 I tried also this: make custom user agent change permanent but when I use the default write command it seems not to have any effect |

How can I create a UEFI FAT32 bootable USB to install Windows 10 from Linux? [closed] Posted: 02 Apr 2022 05:55 AM PDT I only have UEFI BIOS mode on my computer and it only supports the FAT32 file system. My computer comes with windows 10, but I removed Windows 10 from the dual boot and only used Linux. Now when I am trying to find away to install Windows 10 again, nothing is working because the Windows 10 ISO exceeds the FAT32 size. Is there a way to to install Windows from Linux on an UEFI system? |
What is an "avenger advertisement" coming from the locationd process? Posted: 02 Apr 2022 12:07 AM PDT Out of boredom, I ran the console application that comes with macOS by default. As I was looking through some of the logs, I noticed a line that said:

coming from the same subsystem and category. Does anyone have any idea where these logs are coming from? I'm on a MacBook Air M1 running macOS Monterrey 12.2.1 |
My MacBook Wake up for No Reason Posted: 01 Apr 2022 10:49 PM PDT My current system is MacOS Monterey 12.2.1. I found my MacBook waked up for no reason at night. At first I though it was because of my keyboard was pressed, so I switched off my Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. But the computer waked up and went into login page while I did not touch a thing. I checked system preference --> battery --> schedule, the start up remains unchecked. Then I had to look for the log with |
Posted: 01 Apr 2022 07:20 PM PDT Sometimes my magic trackpad doesn't work reliably or have lags because of unstable bluetooth connection. It seems to work completely fine when connected via the included lightning to usb-c cable. I've heard that keeping the battery charge at 100% is bad for the battery. How bad is it? i.e. If I use my magic trackpad plugged-in for 2 years, what health will the battery most likely have? |
How to start TextEdit with a new document right away? Posted: 02 Apr 2022 06:02 AM PDT Normally when I click on TextEdit or use Spotlight to open it, I'll have to click on "New Document". However, I notice some Mac start TextEdit with a new document right away. How did people do that? I know this answer but that requires either removing the functionality to sync text file with iCloud or using a terminal command. Is there an easier way? |
Time Machine believes that iMovie Library is deleted, when iMovie is open Posted: 01 Apr 2022 07:41 PM PDT I have a Mac Mini (Mid-2011 model), running Mac OS X 10.11.6, with iMovie 10.1.6. I have a When I don't have iMovie running, and I perform a Time Machine backup, Time Machine backs up the file just fine. However, when I have iMovie running, Time Machine does not back up the file. For some reason, Time Machine believes the iMovie Library file has been deleted, while iMovie remains open. And then when I quit iMovie, Time Machine backs up the iMovie Library file again, since it is then able to "see" the iMovie Library again, even though it never went anywhere. And since Time Machine thought the iMovie Library was deleted, then later sees it, it thinks that the iMovie Library is new, so it backs the whole thing up, rather than only the changes that were made since the last iMovie Library backup. So, why does Time Machine believe that the iMovie Library is deleted while iMovie is open, and how can I fix it? I've already tried running |

Open local network adresses without internet connectivity on iOS Posted: 02 Apr 2022 06:01 AM PDT I've building an appliance that offers a control panel on an integrated WiFi hotspot. People using iPads however experience the situation where there are connected to the WiFi network, but cannot access the local appliances pages address with Safari, as Safari is telling them that the page can't be opened, as there is no interent connection. I've got some device to test with, and in fact this happens on an 6th generation iPad with recent software updates. Is there any way to work around this bug, maybe by Safari / iOS settings? |
How to delete Self-Signed certificate from System Keychain (Big Sur) Posted: 02 Apr 2022 07:17 AM PDT I just can't find a way to delete the Self-Signed Root CA from Keychain under System. Help diagnosing repeated kernel panics Posted: 02 Apr 2022 01:00 AM PDT I've been experiencing repeated kernel panics on my 2015 Macbook Pro. Sometimes the fans start spinning really loudly before the panic, sometimes not. Sometimes the screen jut goes black, sometimes it glitches in crazy ways (see picture). I've taken the MacBook to a repair shop and they've looked at it four times(!), each time insisting that nothing is wrong with the hardware and that they can't replicate the error. Wifi packet loss problem with Mac Posted: 02 Apr 2022 05:02 AM PDT (MacBook pro 16" 2019 big sur [latest]) I have a problem with my wifi. I noticed that my browser gets "stuck" by not loading pages, or taking too long doing that (any browser). I tested this using the command in the terminal: I tested this on my android phone which is located right next to my macbook and connected to the same wifi network with a 100% success. Can you please help me resolve the problem? |

Is it possible to rename an USB or Bluetooth audio device? Posted: 02 Apr 2022 03:57 AM PDT I am using a Bluetooth headset. To charge it, I need USB, and when connecting that, it appears two times as audio device - obviously once as Bluetooth device, once as USB device. Both audio devices show up with the exact same name. This is no huge problem, but everything sometimes gets confusing and weird. If I'm in video conferences and busy with other stuff, I don't want to spend even seconds to fool around with that. Is there a way to permanently rename such a device? I assume both a Bluetooth and an USB device has a unique ID which is the actual way for the laptop and the device to communicate; I guess the name is just a human-friendly label. At least the Bluetooth device is surely a persistent thing inside the Mac, since it knows that it has coupled with the device before. If that is not pssible, is there a way to permanently block a specific USB device from ever showing up as audio device at all? |

MBP built in keyboard unresponsive until complete shutdown Posted: 01 Apr 2022 09:08 PM PDT MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), running macOS Catalina 10.15.5. Sometimes while working, the built-in keyboard becomes completely unresponsive, the only button that works is the power button. Logging-off, sleeping etc. does nothing, only shut down and fresh boot (with the chime) removes the issue. While the issue is happening, the Caps Lock light is turned on. Touchpad works fine, and plugging external USB keyboard also works (but doesn't unlock the built-in keyboard). Mouse Keys, all this stuff is turned off. I noticed, but have no proof, that this happens when I'm pressing various left-side modifier keys: shift, alt, ctrl, cmd, tab. Is this a hardware issue? A software issue? A hidden shortcut? Is there some kind of logging that can be turned on to watch for this kind of things? |
USB Ethernet to WiFi Internet sharing does not work Posted: 02 Apr 2022 04:03 AM PDT I have a MacBook Pro Retina 2012 running Mojave. I was using USB ethernet on my Mac and sharing that as a WiFi to my android phone. All was stable. Last week I had a partition error while I was resizing the disk and OS had crashed. I had to reinstall Mojave. Now I'm trying to use the same setup. MacBook is getting internet from USB ethernet fine. I then shared the ethernet into my WiFi like last time for my Android. The Android connects to the WiFi but this time keeps saying no Internet. Mac can connect to WiFi, but cannot share internet through it. (I would guess the NAT server is not working or something like it) I don't know how to diagnose the problem and fix it. Please suggest. |

How can I get my Mac to automatically connect to a given network whenever it becomes available? Posted: 02 Apr 2022 02:55 AM PDT I take my Macbook out and about during the day and I'm often connected to my phone for internet access. I'm always careful to not watch videos or start any large downloads until I get home for obvious reasons. However, on numerous occasions I've got home, and started to use the internet freely, only to then realise I forgot to manually connect to my home (unlimited) network--that is to say I'm still connected to my mobile phone, blazing through my monthly allowance in no time. Is there any way to get my Mac to automatically (or perhaps with a prompt) disconnect to whatever network is was connected to, and connect to the new, designated network, whenever it comes into range? |
