Dictation stopped working macOS Monterey version 12

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 07:12 AM PDT

On a new 2021 Macbook, with macOS Monterey 12.0, I used Dictation frequently.

A few days ago Dictation just stopped working completely. The microphone overlay pops up but there is not movement in response to sound and no words are generated.

I thought it might be a microphone input issue but checking the Sound settings, the microphone is selected and working great.

I have turned it on and off as suggested by this question and answer. However doing the on off restart dance has not fixed the issue for me.

Also found this AskDifferent question where Dictation stops working intermittently. However for me restarting has not fixed the issue.

I opened the Console app and did see an error when I tried using Dictation. Don't know if that is helpful or not, I don't know what I am looking for.

How can I fix Dictation so it works again?

USB Drive Password Not Stored in Keychain

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 05:32 AM PDT

I have an encrypted external USB drive which I am using as a TimeMachine backup drive. I have to enter the password every time I log into my machine, despite checking the box "Remember this password in my keychain".

Is there a way to fix this so that I don't have to enter my password every time?

Disable option for USB accessories

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 05:16 AM PDT

I have an iPhone SE.

I want to disable USB Accessories so that my phone cannot be connected to via USB after an hour, protecting my security.

The problem I have is that the option is enabled, and I cannot disable it because it is greyed out, preventing me from tapping on it. I checked a few YouTube tutorial videos and it just seems to work.

Change Mac terminal name before the @

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 06:54 AM PDT

In my terminal, it shows

(base) jeffsungs@Sung-Macbook-Air ~ %

on every row. I know that Sung-Macbook-Air is the localhostname, and how to change it. But how about the writings before the @ (in this case is jeffsungs), what is its name and how to change it?

Pressing the "Opt" key to show Lauchpad

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 01:52 AM PDT

In KDE Plasma I was able to press the Win key and the overview menu has been shown with my apps, favorites, recent, etc.

I would like a similar behavior for my Mac - just because of the muscle memory.

So, I would like to press the Opt key and after the release it would show the Launchpad.

But at the same time I still want to retain the ability to use the Opt key in combinations with other keys to trigger shortcuts, etc.

Any idea how can it be done?

How can I save all my message data onto my computer?

Posted: 27 Apr 2022 10:51 PM PDT

I just bought a new cell phone (Android) but my old one is an iphone and still holds a lot of data and I dont want to lose it so I want to save all my sms conversations and messages so I can see them on my computer any time. I came across some paid solutions as iMazing but its just too expensive for a feature an iphone sould have. Is there anyway to do it via itunes or something? I have Windows.

Thank you.

How do I use Mac dictation in Google Docs?

Posted: 27 Apr 2022 11:05 PM PDT

I'm using macOS 12.3.1 and Google Chrome 101, and I want to be able to use macOS's dictation in Google Docs, but I couldn't activate the dictation prompt in Google Docs.

I tried assigning a different key in Sys prefs > Keyboard > dictation, but dictation still won't activate in Google Docs.

My questions are:

  • How do I use Mac dictation in Google Docs, and some other apps, like the terminal?
  • Can I activate dictation from command line?

AppleScript: get A's every item whose B is in {1, 2, 3, 4}

Posted: 27 Apr 2022 10:07 PM PDT

I'm pretty sure my question is just a general syntax question, but including specific context in case it's relevant:

There's a Mac app called SwitchResX which lets you do cool things like create and use custom resolutions on Mac monitors. It has a background process called "SwitchResX Daemon" which is AppleScriptable.

Among other things:

  • application (class) has one or more display elements
  • display (class) has one or more mode elements
  • mode (class) has properties like height, width (integers), frequency (real), valid (boolean), etc.

I'm having two related problems:

Problem 1: whose/where X is in {...}

tell application "SwitchResX Daemon" set theDisplay to the second display set theModes1 to theDisplay's every mode where it is valid and ((its width is 3008) or (its width is 2560)) --> {mode 8 of display 2, mode 12 of display 2} = expected and desired result set theModes2 to theDisplay's every mode where it is valid and (its width is in {3008, 2560}) --> …error: Can't make {3008, 2560} into type specifier. end tell

I use if statements like if width is in {3008,2560} then ... a lot. Can the is in {...} condition not be used in a whose/where clause, or do I just the syntax wrong?

Problem 2: I have a need to split the filtering in at least one situation. So...

tell application "SwitchResX Daemon" set theDisplay to the second display set theModesAllValid to theDisplay's every mode where it is valid --> {……, mode 8 of display 2, mode 12 of display 2, ……} = expected and desired result set someModes1 to theModesAllValid's first item where ((its width is 3008) or (its width is 2560)) --> mode 8 of display 2 = expected and desired result set someModes2 to theModesAllValid's first item where (its width is in {3008, 2560}) --> same error as problem 1 above set someModes3 to theModesAllValid's every item where ((its width is 3008) or (its width is 2560)) --> error noted below** set someModes4 to theModesAllValid's every item where (its width is in {3008, 2560}) --> error noted below** end tell -- **error = "Can't get {……, mode 8 of display 2 of application "SwitchResX Daemon", mode 12 of display 2 of application "SwitchResX Daemon", ……} whose width of it = 3008 or width of it = 2560."

So someModes1 (using first item instead of every item) works -- similar to theModes1 in Problem 1 (except item instead of list, as expected). And someModes2 gives the same error as theModes2 (so, consistent at least).

But then I would expect someModes3 and someModes4 to give the same results as Problem 1, but here the every breaks it somehow. Why is that? And even if there's no solution to Problem 1 (meaning someModes4 won't work), is there some way to break the filtering up into two steps for some derivative of someModes3 to work?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Can’t erase Bootcamp volume to reinstall MacOS

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 03:23 AM PDT

I had MacOS Monterrey installed and wanted to dual boot with Windows 10. I used BootCamp to install Windows 10 on another partition I created.

Somehow along the way, my macOS partition got completely wiped out.

I don't see it as a boot up selection when I hold Option during boot up. I only see Windows. I boot up via the Internet Recovery partition and using diskutil list, I see the following:

/dev/disk0 (internal): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme *500.3 GB disk0 1: EFI EFI 314.6 MB disk0s1 2: Microsoft Basic Data New Volume 177 GB disk0s2 3: Microsoft Basic Data Windows 322 GB disk0s3 /dev/disk1 (synthesized): #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: GUID_partition_scheme - +3.2 GB disk1 1: Apple_HFS macOS Base System 2.9 GB disk1s1

I ran diskutil cs list which shows:

No CoreStorage logical volume groups found

I have tried to perform the following command but I get a Error: -69878: Couldn't open disk:

diskutil eraseVolume free none disk0s3

I want to start over from scratch and have Monterrey re-installed with Bootcamp deleted. Can someone point me in the right direction?

Can I expect another Xcode 13.2 update beyond 13.2.1 that would support iOS 15.4?

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 06:30 AM PDT

Where can I find a roadmap for Xcode to know if Apple intends to provide another 13.2 update?

I foolishly upgraded my iPhone to iOS 15.4.1 without first checking if Xcode 13.2.1 supports it. I can't upgrade Xcode to 13.3 without first upgrading macOS to 12. I've heard some horrible problems (memory management) exist for that release and I'm wanting to wait a bit longer before upgrading from macOS 11.6.5. And there's no telling what other programs (e.g. VMware Fusion) I might have to upgrade after a macOS upgrade.

Mojave 10.14.6 is it possible to specific folder icons links in the finder context menu?

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 06:38 AM PDT

Specifically the desktop, but other folder/location links would be great too. Being a 25 plus year daily Mac user I should be able to figure this out, but I'm lost. I'd like to create a clickable folder link in the context menu - hovering over it to see the contents if said folder would be a bonus. Thanks for any advice or tips ;o

It seems no way rotate screen display after updating to Monterey, even when I press Command and Option?

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 06:12 AM PDT

Before updating to Monterey, I was able to turn on the Rotate Screen option by pressing and clicking Display Settings, but it seems that all this doesn't work after Monterey?

Secure Erasing Internal SSDs Using File Vault

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 05:07 AM PDT

I am the "middleman" in an effort to collect old, unused Apple devices from seniors living in an aging-in-place community. My intention is to collect their devices, wipe them clean, then donate them to a local charity resettling Afghan refugees in the immediate area. Erasing HDDs I understand. Erasing SSDs is where I need guidance. I suspect all the donated computers will be 2016 or before and most will be laptops. I read that if I turn on FileVault, encrypt the SSD, boot into Recovery mode and erase the SSD, that will be the equivalent of securely erasing an HHD with one or two passes writing ones and zeros. Is this correct - I feel a very strong obligation to those donating old computers to get this right.

Big Sur terminal sometimes 5-second lag, 16in macbook pro

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 02:00 AM PDT

update 5 issue seems to still be happening for another user (see comment in answer below) under macOS 11.2.3.

update 4 Looks like this issue in terminal is no longer happening after updating to 11.2.3. However, there's now a similar issue in Google Chrome where having multiple tabs open and then clicking a tab does nothing, but then moving the cursor will go to that tab (the expected behavior is obviously to go the tab immediately upon clicking the tab). The "Battery" settings under System Preferences now has a checkbox to enable/disable discrete graphics switching (not sure if it was there before) but disabling switching causes the Chrome tab problem to go away.

update 3 This just happened to me again when my macbook was at 100% battery, and plugged in. Is it possible that it's not due to the graphics switching?

Update 2 Looks like this is a known bug with the hybrid graphics of my MBP, as the answer below points out. Here's another thread. Interestingly, I haven't noticed any issues in other apps like Chrome or Safari that much, just in Terminal.

Update I notice that the lag seems to happen only when running on battery. Additionally, I've observed in even when not pressing return, for example when using Vim and just navigating around with hjkl, sometimes a single keypress would seem to not register, but then the second press would "flush" of them, or alternatively waiting about 5 seconds will "flush" the first press.

original

I'm using the default terminal in Big Sur using 2019 16 inch macbook pro. I'm on a clean install, with no changed settings or installed programs. Default shell settings.

Sometimes (maybe once every 15 min or so) when I input a command in terminal (e.g. ls or cd ~/Documents), and when I hit Return on my keyboard, the terminal seems to do nothing. If I press any key again, then the Return "goes through", along with the second key I pressed. Alternatively, if I just wait 5 seconds, the Return "goes through", and everything is fine.

Has anyone else noticed this terminal lag?

How can I troubleshot bluetooth occasionally restarting on MacBooks?

Posted: 27 Apr 2022 10:05 PM PDT

During the last 4 years I've had 3 different MacBooks (one personal, two from different jobs) that had the same issue: bluetooth randomly dropped all connections. I typically have a bluetooth keyboard, mouse and headphones connected but headphones are typically optional.

If it happened with one machine, I would blame myself for messing something up or maybe faulty hardware in that particular unit. However, this is my third macbook that's suffering from the exact same issue. Bluetooth either comes back after a few minutes or I restart the thing manually. It's a bit annoying during conference calls.

Is this by any means a known issue and something I could do anything about?

Are there iOS apps for taking notes with Apple Pencil in color, grid, and with pages to print?

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 12:07 AM PDT

I am searching for an app, in which I can take notes during lectures. To be more specific I would like to find an app which extends the default notes app in the following ways:

  1. Creating a color palette (eg. I would like to have darker colors, but it seems like I can only pick one color at a time)
  2. Changing grid size (I would like to make the grid a bit smaller, so it fits my handwriting better)
  3. Option for pages (Ideally I would like to be able to print my notes, but the $\infty$-paper cuts my handwriting in half)

Other features (like pdf annotation, text recognition etc.) are not important for my use case. The recommended apps I was able to test (Notes, INKredible, Nebo, Sketches, Paper, Quicknotes) didn't fulfill these requirements. Due to cost I could not test Goodnotes or Notepad+.

I hope there is an app satisfying my needs, to specially to vouch for a paid app if that's the only fit for my requirements.

Can any app do some or all of my requirements?

Unable to share Wi-Fi passwords with one of my Macs

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 07:06 AM PDT

I am unable to share any Wi-Fi passwords to one of my Macs.

  • AirDrop works to share photos / files / web pages
  • Handoff does work for Safari to hand off an active page
  • Sharing WiFi passwords certainly does not work at all

Let's call the affected Mac "Mac A". I am able to share passwords from my iPhone to "Mac B" and I am also able to share passwords with other contacts from my iPhone. I am able to share Wi-Fi passwords from "Mac A" to my iPhone, but not the other way around.

When I try to share a password from any device (but using my iPhone as an example) to "Mac A" the iPhone says "Sharing" for about 30 seconds and then shows "Password Not Shared" "There was a problem sharing your Wi-Fi password." I've added a screenshot of the error, just in case that's of use.

I've tried to fix this by:

  • Signing out of iCloud on all of my devices
  • "Forgetting" Wi-Fi networks from all of my devices
  • Restarting all devices
  • Sign in to iCloud on my iPhone
  • Connect to my home Wi-Fi network from my iPhone
  • Connect "Mac A" to the internet via Ethernet
  • Sign in to iCloud on "Mac A"
  • Disconnect Ethernet
  • Attempt to connect to my home Wi-Fi network on "Mac A"
  • Performed a reinstall of macOS on "Mac A" (using recovery mode)
  • Erased "Mac A" and performed a clean install of macOS

However, I get the same error. I've also tried resetting "network settings" on my iPhone and then going through the above steps, but that didn't change anything. I kind of didn't expect this to help as the issue appears to be with "Mac A".

I don't know what else to try next with this. Does any one have any ideas on what to try?

How to leave the Rename Printer dialogue without renaming the printer

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 01:04 AM PDT

In Catalina, when I try to rename a printer but then change my mind and try to close out of the screen, one cannot.

Here's what I did:

  • Go to rename an existing printer (System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Right click > Rename Printer)
  • When the rename printer dialog opens, then change your mind and don't rename the printer.
  • Or, perhaps just rename the "Location" and leave the printer field the same.

For me, macOS Catalina always responds like this, even when there is no other printer that has a conflicting name.

Printer error message

Is there a way to cancel the Rename Printer dialogue once one enters it without renaming the printer? OR, if this problem does not show up on other people's computers when they try to replicate this problem, what might be causing my system to do this? This seems like one among many bugs in this frustrating release of the operating system.

Standard Windows Keyboard - wrong keys recognised

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 02:42 AM PDT

I have a classic British Windows keyboard plugged into my Mac Mini. I'm sure I had it working but now it's not... I can choose between these two layouts but neither is correct:

enter image description here enter image description here

My keyboard, like every other UK PC keyboard, has backslash to the left of Z, and nothing to the right of [ & ].

How can I reset this - reinitialise the keyboard?

cal command - start monday

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 08:40 AM PDT

I was wondering - is there a way to make 'cal' (a terminal program) start the week on monday?

Usually it can be done with the -m flag, but this does not have any effect on the Mac. AFAIK, for freebsd you need deskutils, but I could not find any equivalent on the mac, even in homebrew.

Is there a switch or alternate source for a cal tool that allows weekday start changes?
