What is the purpose of directory /var/dirs_cleaner? Posted: 26 Apr 2022 01:05 AM PDT I'm using a 2020 MacBook Pro on Monterey 12.3.1, and noticed a new directory, var/dirs_cleaner which is empty, has permissions of read and write by the system. I've tried to find out on Google, but no information on this is available. Is this a part of the system, or malware? Is there anything I should know about this folder, as I've not seen it before. |

Can I boot from "MSI" file? [closed] Posted: 26 Apr 2022 12:04 AM PDT I have a MSI file or let say it is a Windows installer. I can run the file inside the Windows and Windows will restart to load the setup in booting phase. So I have an ISO file. In Windows, I have the tool from the vendor to wrap the ISO to MSI file then ISO can be boot without USB flash. Is there any tools to create this "MSI" file? or is possible to create custom script to execute ISO file in booting mode? Thanks. |

How do I play all songs shuffled of an artist? Posted: 25 Apr 2022 09:56 PM PDT I mean all songs of an artist that exists in Apple music. The songs should include those that are not in my library. I couldn't find a way on iOS or macOS. |
Cannot copy files but can copy folders to SMB share Posted: 25 Apr 2022 06:51 PM PDT I've set up my Raspberry Pi to share an external HDD as a samba share. My clients are macOS 11.6 and 11.5. I've followed the Samba Wiki page on how to configure samba to work better with Apple. I can see and connect to my share. I can delete files and folders. I can rename and move them. I can copy directories to the Samba share. The only thing I can't do is copy over individual files. When I do this, I get error 100093. These are my Samba global settings Googling around I did find this discussion with a proposed fix that seems to have worked for others. I tried this, using the following Samba global settings Exact same behaviour and error. Any idea what could be causing this? |
Session count DECREASING in AppStoreConnect/TestFlight for my app Posted: 25 Apr 2022 06:35 PM PDT I'm seeing session counts DECREASE over time when I check TestFlight for my app. It has been in TestFlight for an extended period (over a year and half) while we've been creating a new and improved alternative. CLARIFICATION: Because users are using this, after nearly 90 days we create a new build, so they can continue testing the app. I've been checking counts about once a month, and this month most of my users are showing a DECREASE in the sessions column from last month. I'm always (now) using the ALL TESTERS choice. My desire is to start asking the most active users if they are ready to test the NEW app, using the session count as an (imperfect) guide. |
Is there any way to add Slack to the Share menu on a Mac? Posted: 25 Apr 2022 05:47 PM PDT Pretty simple, I'd like to right click on a file, select I want to share a file over Slack with a coworker from the finder. |
WhatsApp Videos not working after i upgrade my iphone Posted: 25 Apr 2022 04:40 PM PDT I just upgraded my iPhone recently I did backup for my WhatsApp using iCloud, but after installing WhatsApp in my new iPhone and restoring my chats all my VIDEOS are not working anymore. Videos are there but not playing and when I press the play button it's not changing. And when I try to forward the video it says "can't forward. This video unavailable because it was not backed up" I tried to search over the internet to find a solution but I couldn't. Will be highly appreciate if any solutions available. 2nd photo link: https://i.postimg.cc/RVVSjH3Y/3-EA7-D6-DA-D771-4189-9708-2-D55-BA093624.jpg |
Recommendations MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013) Bootcamp 120 GB Posted: 25 Apr 2022 05:58 PM PDT I'm considering installing bootcamp to play a single game Valorant on my Macbook. I'm clearing up storage space for this very purpose, and will have only 80 GB of free storage space to likely even partition when done. For this reason I am considering using a SanDisk Extreme Storage (256GB) Micro SD to partition for bootcamp. If I am only running a single game, what is reasonable amount of storage to run a game like Valorant, and would using an SD be necessary/ more efficient? |

Accessing a Whatsapp backup on iCloud Drive (Windows) Posted: 25 Apr 2022 04:31 PM PDT I am trying to retrieve a Whatsapp backup file that is stored on iCloud. I have found this thread which explains how to do that with a Macbook: accessing whatsapp icloud backup I have a pc with Windows 10 so I installed iCloud drive on it, then tried to look for any hidden files from the command line, but I cannot find anything (used dir /a:h). When I click on the storage button in the icloud window, I can see there is 186MB for Whatsapp, which I think corresponds to the backup I am looking for. Any advice on how I could access that Whatsapp backup file? Ultimately, I am trying to download the file, then will try to use a third-party software to try to load back in a new phone. Thanks! |
Finder and Terminal have different views of the system disc [closed] Posted: 25 Apr 2022 09:24 PM PDT MacBook Air 2017, macOS 10.15.7 The question below, now delimited by '---' has been closed by the Mighty Ones, and is not accepting answers. I have now resolved it, thanks to a helpful comment by @Mike. In Finder, I'd added a space to the folder name, 'ABC ' for 'ABC'. bash reports "ABC: no such..." to either "cd ABC" or "cd ABC " Please remove this text from the question, to allow an answer, which might help others. I've put it here, as my last reopen request was refused. I can see a folder in Finder, but Terminal says 'No such file or folder. There have been similar questions here, but none seem to address my particular problem. Everything has been fine with this folder, Finder, and Terminal for several months, but this has suddenly happened, without warning. I should really appreciate some help. |
WD Hard Disk not Mounting/First Aid not Running Posted: 25 Apr 2022 05:45 PM PDT My hard disk has decided to not mount anymore. It has a partition, one I use for Time Machine and the other I use for storing files. This is what disk4 and disk5 is where the problem lies. I am wondering what the solution is. When I am opening files like iBoySoft the files are there and clear to see that my hard disk has not been wiped. However, it will not mount. |

iPhone photos taken on camera fail to show up in Photos for ten seconds Posted: 25 Apr 2022 11:05 PM PDT I take photos or screenshots frequently and then want to immediately send them to friends or share on social media. Recently I have noticed it takes up to ten seconds for photos or screenshots to appear in my "Recents" album. When they first appear in the album they show up at low resolution and I can't select them, and then a few seconds later they show up at high resolution. I have 150GB free space on a phone with 256GB total storage. Curiously I noticed if I took a bunch of photos in a row - say, ten in five seconds - those photos showed up immediately. I do not have iCloud photo sync enabled. I can also reproduce this effect if I have airplane mode turned on, ie. no Internet connection. Has anyone ever seen this before? Do you know the possible cause? |
Posted: 25 Apr 2022 04:09 PM PDT I have lost my Magic Mouse. To be clear, it's somewhere in my home office and it's powered on. I can pair with it via bluetooth. I just can't find the physical object. Does anyone know of a way to make it beep or flash or something so I can locate it? |
Issue restoring iPhone from Mac backup using Finder Posted: 25 Apr 2022 03:12 PM PDT Edit: I upgraded to Monterey 12.1 and am still seeing the same issue. I've also updated the iPhone to the latest software version. I have two phones, both iPhone XS running the latest iOS (15.1 or 15.2), that I backed up to my Mac yesterday from Finder. My Mac is on macOS Monterey 12.0.1. I am now having issues restoring those backups. I am experiencing the exact same issues restoring backup 1 to a new iPhone 13 and restoring backup 2 to an iPhone XS. So, the below applies to both phones: Issue 1: When I plug my phone in and then select "Restore Backup" in Finder, the Finder hangs on "Erasing Phone", even though I can see that the phone has been erased and is now on the new phone setup screen. After waiting 30 minutes with no changes in Finder, I unplugged the phone (eject didn't work) and plugged it back in, and then Finder recognized the phone (the name updated to the name from the backup) and automatically shows "Restoring iPhone from backup". Nice. Maybe this isn't an issue, but I wanted to include these details Issue 2: When the phone starts restoring from backup, the Finder initially shows the progress bar moving left and right (i.e. it feels like it's doing something but still deciding how long it will take), but after maybe 10-20 seconds, the progress bar shows completely filled, and there's no animation or indication that anything is happening. This is what I see: Meanwhile, my phone just shows the "Connect to Mac or to a PC with iTunes" screen and gives no indication that a restore is in progress. I can even tap "Back" and continue with setup. I left my phone connected for several hours just in case it was working, but the screens never changed, so I disconnected my phone, and it is still in the initial setup state. For Phone 1, I gave up and tried restoring from the old phone with Quick Start (holding the phones next to each other), and that failed three times in a row after almost two hours each time. I ended up backing up the old phone to iCloud and restoring that way, which worked great. For phone 2, I no longer have the old phone, so restoring from this Mac backup is my only option. |
How can I stop a bluetooth keyboard from waking my Macbook Pro? Posted: 25 Apr 2022 03:48 PM PDT I use my 2019 MacBook Pro with a Magic Keyboard via Bluetooth. When the MBP is in sleep mode, I can wake it up by pressing a key on the keyboard. I would like to change it so key presses on the Magic Keyboard are ignored. I still want it to wake up easily otherwise - if possible by pressing any key on the integrated MBP keyboard, or by some other simple means (i.e. by a quick press on the on/off button). I do not wish to turn off the Magic Keyboard, to disable Bluetooth or to disconnect the device in the Bluetooth settings. Is there a way to achieve this? I checked the settings, and found no option to disallow a specific device to influence sleep mode... |

What is eating up space inside Final Cut X bundles? Posted: 25 Apr 2022 04:04 PM PDT So here is the deal: I am backing up my HD, deleting all the media and keeping just the bundles. Usually it takes no more than 2MB, maybe 5MB. However some bundles are getting 10x more space. Like this one: Often it is just about embedded render files (and then it can take several GB). No problem, I just get inside the package and delete the Render folder. Now what is really odd, is that inside some packages, there is nothing using that space. As you can see, I have already enabled hidden files to display. Could it be some sort of Finder refreshing issue? |
Why is the Data Roaming option missing from iPhone settings? Posted: 25 Apr 2022 03:04 PM PDT I am travelling internationally, and charges for Internet data are about $15 per megabyte. My provider doesn't offer a roaming package for that. I plan to add a second local SIM using eSIM. I want to be sure Data Roaming is off, even if Cellular Data is on. Currently using an unlocked iPhone SE 2, with iOS 14.7.1. According to this Apple help page: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201643 in order to turn off Data Roaming, I should: "Open Settings and tap Cellular, or Cellular Data, or Mobile Data. Turn off Cellular Data, then tap Cellular Data Options and turn off Data Roaming." I did the above, as far as turning off Cellular Data. However, when I tap Cellular Data Options, there is no option for Data Roaming. There is only Low Data Mode. Why is it missing, and how can I assure that Data Roaming is off? I understand that turning off Cellular Data should stop any data roaming charges. However, I don't want to make an expensive mistake, in case I accidentally turn on Cellular Data. I want to be sure that Data Roaming is off, even if Cellular Data is on. I don't want to experiment with turning on Cellular Data to see whether an option for Data Roaming appears. |
El Capitan sidebar preferences not sticking Posted: 25 Apr 2022 08:07 PM PDT I had a hard drive failure and am temporarily using a machine which can only be brought up to El Capitan. I have a sidebar problem that is driving me crazy. The configuration of the sidebar favorites is "stuck". If I make a change (such as reordering the list or deleting a folder), after a logout, the sidebar configuration reverts to one I made a long time ago. I have tried trashing the Finder and Sidebar preferences, quitting the Finder, logging out and restarting with no joy. I looked in com.apple.sidebar.plist and compared it to the file I have on my Yosemite machine and it is quite limited. Specifically, it is missing an entry called "favoriteItems" which has a child "CustomListItems" that seems to hold the info needed to make the sidebar look the way I want. I have actually been having a lot of strange "things not sticking" issues on this machine - most seem to be solved, but this one isn't. I checked the permissions on my ~/library and ~/library/preferences files and I do have rw privileges Is the sidebar favorites configuration stored differently on El Capitan vs. Yosemite? |
How to create a script with Automator to watermark each PDF in a folder with a different watermark? Posted: 25 Apr 2022 05:01 PM PDT I am trying to create a script to watermark a group a PDF files in a folder, each PDF has to have a unique watermark. All the PDFs are in one folder, all the watermarks are in .png located in another folder. I currently have watermark script which I found on Apple Forums, but this was made to watermark all files with one watermark only. What I need is a way to watermark each PDF file with it's own different watermark (there are 400 pdfs and 400 different watermarks) Here is the contents of the watermark |
Import Albums "From my Mac" to my iPhone albums and keep them synced Posted: 25 Apr 2022 06:06 PM PDT I don't use iCloud Photos. I wanted to import my iPhone photo albums to my Mac but it seems that without iCloud Photos it is not possible without any third party software according to my searches. But I've found that I can create albums on Photos on my Mac and then sync with my iPhone. So I took time to recreate albums on my Mac. I factory reset my iPhone and then sync with my Mac. All the photos are back, even the albums, great. BUT, the albums on my iPhone are "hidden" in the "From my Mac" section. Not in "My Albums". And I can't add photos to these albums on my iPhone. I could select all the photos and add them on a newly created album on my iPhone with the same name but.. I guess it will be out of sync. Is it possible to keep the albums between my Mac and iPhone synced AND have the possibility to add photos to these albums on my iPhone ? Without iCloud Photos. I've searched for a solution for the past two days and I don't know what to do anymore. It is supposed to be simple.. isn't it ? :( Thanks |
Permanently remove sidebar that pops up every time I open a tab in Safari Posted: 25 Apr 2022 09:52 PM PDT How can I permanently remove the sidebar that pops up every time I open a tab in Safari 9.1.3 on OS X El Capitan? |
MacBook Air forgetting display arrangement Posted: 26 Apr 2022 01:01 AM PDT My Mac seems to be forgetting display arrangements for external monitors. It doesn't matter what type of connector it is (Tried Apple converter to VGA as well as non-apple to DVI). Within only a few hours after unplugging the display it will be reset. Has anyone seen anything about similar issues? Is it maybe Mavericks-related? |

how to reset iphone to factory settings
ReplyDeleteYou might sometimes get stuck up in a situation where your apple iPhone is corrupted due to one or the other reason. It then calls for some action to be taken that helps to revive it back. Trying restart or soft reset is the first thing that you can go for.
