Help - Bootcamp on MacBook Air 2020

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 07:45 AM PDT

I am 17:00 minutes into this tutorial on YouTube (by 9to5Mac) and am not seeing the drivers I need to install (Windows Support). I can see them on the external drive and VMWare, just not when I boot to Windows. What am I doing wrong here?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IhW722IMwE&t=221s

To be honest here, all I want to do is be able to play Windows Games on my MacBook through places like Steam and Epic. I just don't want to drop $1k to do so.

How to get into Recovery mode in MacOS 11.4 **Remotely**(M1)

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 07:19 AM PDT

I need to reboot into recovery mode on a remote Mac machine (M1, 11.4). I found that there are 2 ways to do it: One - By pressing some buttons at startup. Two - By setting the nvram like so:

sudo nvram "recovery-boot-mode=unused"

But the latter gives me this error:

nvram: Error setting variable - 'recovery-boot-mode': (iokit/common) not permitted

I read that is something to do with SIP. But this exactly what I'm trying to change in recovery... So I'm in an endless loop :(

Any help is welcomed.

Bash script to move files with '(2)' in filename from second monitor

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 07:28 AM PDT

When taking screenshots on MacOS, the second monitor content is in file xxxx(2).png

If a user (poweruser on Windows but newbie on MacOS) wants a script that moves all screenshot with *(2).* to folder "two", how is it done via script/command line?

The command below does not work. It moves all files and the user needs just half of the files moved.

mkdir two mv *(2).* two

What is the correct mv command?

(and ideally making it clickable/executable (chmod or .command or bash mymovecmd.sh)

man mv does not talk at all about any star notation for moving files. Not sure if mv on macos suports globbing and how to use it. https://stackoverflow.com/questions/28176590/what-do-double-asterisk-wildcards-mean

CoreServicesUIAgent - stuck on Verifying "providerESP.dylib"

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 05:41 AM PDT

I have recently updated my Macbook to Monterey and I have noticed I keep getting a Verifying "providerESP.dylib" dialog box appearing with a loading bar, but it never progresses and completes.

enter image description here

I can only minimize the box, the close button does nothing, when it minimizes in the system tray I can see it and when hovering on it shows this as a CoreServicesUIAgent process.

I can find the process sure enough in Activity Monitor, and its seemingly not doing much at all. I can kill it and sure enough the loading dialog goes away, but it will come back some time later.

Anyone got any clues what this "providerESP.dylib" is? I cant find anything on the web as to what program it may related to specifically, although ESP could be Email Service Provider from some searches I have done.

Erratic mouse movement on Macbook Pro trackpad

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 05:11 AM PDT

I am experiencing erratic behavior of my Macbook Pro (2020) trackpad. I can't seem to be able to precisely target anything, with the mouse constantly jumping around during movement (sometimes jumping small distances like jittering, sometimes large distances).

I used FingerMgmt to capture the actual inputs received from the touchpad. What I see is puzzling:

Trackpad jitter in FingerMgmt

I tried restarting the device, but the problem persists.

Mac stuck in a loop

When I was trying to install Big Sur I was stuck on apple logo after update so I cleared some space using terminal in recovery mode and I reinstall big sur. After that I opened my Mac and one user was lost when I tried logging in 2n user it got in loop.

Network environment switch with Wifi network change

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 02:58 AM PDT

I have two network environments I want to set up, with one having Wifi enabled but not connected, while the other is connected to a Wifi network. While I can configure whether Wifi is enabled or not, it looks like you can't configure which Wifi network to configure in a network environment.

So the configurations I want to have are:

  • Ethernet only: Ethernet interface enabled with DHCP, Wifi interface enabled but not connected to network. That last part is important and is what I struggle with.
  • Wifi only: Ethernet interface disabled, Wifi enabled and connected to a specific network.

My goal is to be able to quickly change between these two setups. But if I switch between these two environments, I always need to manually connect/disconnect the Wifi network as the environment does not remember my preference here.

Is there a way to do this with macOS tools or third-party helpers?

(System is macOS 12.3 Monterey.)

How can I stop Mac Automator using previous specification for my actions?

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 06:22 AM PDT

How can I stop Automator using previous specification for my actions?

I'm going crazy with Automator. I have three folders : Deployed, Draft and Live.

In both folders there is a Public folder:

Before

I want to use a set of Automator actions to: Copy the Live Public folder to the Deployed folder, then rename the copied folder by suffixing the date to it. Finally, copy the Draft Public folder to the Live folder

Seems simple. But, Automator seems to remember the previously specified location of my Public folder and applies my action to both the previous specification and the new specification.

Here is the set of actions:

Script

Here is the result, with the Draft being copied to Live, as I wanted, BUT with the renamed Public folder from Deployed also being copied back to Live :

After

Can someone put me out of my misery? How to I stop it using the previous specification? Is there a clear option for memory or another approach - I have tried many.

Thanks.

iMac freezes and then "soft" restarts/ resets

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 01:55 AM PDT

This could be a general problem, but I couldn't find my exact issue and no solution so far.

I have an iMac 5k 27" 2019, 3GHz i5, 40GB RAM, Radeon 570X, macOS Monterey Version 12.3.1

In the last two weeks I have experienced this problem multiple times. Out of nowhere my Mac freezes, no input or anything possible. Screen stays as it is. Then after some minutes it turns black and is immediately at the login. When I login again it looks like it restarted because everything is closed and my start up apps open up. Although it doesn't feel like a restart, because the process between blackscreen and login screen is too fast.

I have no error code or notification from macOS.

I'm not 100% sure but if I remember correctly this always happened when I had lots of stuff open (a lot of chrome tabs, Visual Studio Code, Spotify, Outlook, Project Management Software, Calendar, Photoshop). So far Photoshop was open every time this happened. I haven't used it a lot in the past month and every time it was open the crash happened. Photoshop is on the latest version.

Any ideas what could cause this?

I just wanted to do a restart and closed all apps, then I found a log behind all screens (that didn't show up directly after the restart so I overlooked it). I'm also not sure if this is the correct log, yesterday happened a crash. But the log seems like it's from 27.04 and I'm not sure if I had a crash there.

Maybe this helps, I hope there is no sensitive data in it, I couldn't find any.

iMac mid-2011 GPU upgrade

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 12:16 AM PDT

I'm looking for which GPU would be appropriate to replace my mid-2011 iMac's original GPU which is a Radeon HD 6750M, I'm looking for a $ 100 budget card, but one that may be newer to support a forced macOS upgrade. I would appreciate if someone could recommend me some GPUs within the budget but above all compatible.

Is there a way to get battery charge over USB protocol? [closed]

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 12:08 AM PDT

So, I would like to be able to get current battery charge in percents. But I'd like to get it not on iPad screen but rather on a device that is connected to iPad via USB. I haven't found similar in SDK, so wondering whether this is possible.

MAC OS Sierra 10.12.6 - does not accept region preference changes

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 07:24 PM PDT

For whatever reason, the region preference changed from Brazil to United States (Custom) and I cannot change it back to Brazil. The currency changed to USD and I can also not change it back to BR. The date format displayed is American, the change back to European style date is not accepted either. Any other preferences in Language & Region as well as Date & Time can be changed without any problems.

I tried to:

  • Reset NVRAM
  • Repair the disk with Disk Utility
  • Booting into single-user mode and ran fsck -yf
  • Clear caches with OnyX

all without success.

I can also not locate the .GlobalPreferences.plist in ~/Library/Preferences/

Creating a new user account for test purposes solved the problem and all changes in the preferences were accepted. So it seems to be somehow user account related. However, I would like to continue to use the old user account and to understand what caused this problem.

Did anyone experienced this problem before?

Is there a command line for doing these changes? (I have very basic experience with Terminal)

In which .plists are these preferences stored?

Can anybody help me? Thank you very much in advance.

SSD mounts (in macOS/UNIX) but not in Finder [closed]

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 06:16 PM PDT

MacBook Air (Late 2012) Running a factory-reset, then upgraded to Big Sur (via the required hops).

When running Big Sur's most recent system update (macOS Big Sur 11.6.5), the update got stuck overnight. Was not able to solve problem (did all the standard troubleshooting including re-installing OS).

Stopped trying to complete upgrade, want to focus on disk recovery, and seeing following problem:

When mounting disk in Target Drive mode (using a MacBook Air early-2014 <- thunderbolt to thunderbolt cable -> (dead) MacBook Air mid-2013.

The drive mounts in macOS terminal (unix). The drive does not appear in Finder. Another partition "upgrade" does appear in Finder. When you eject that partition, it warns you that you can eject one or two partitions.

Disk Utility: Disk first aid works without error. Drive is "mounted" when app loads. When you unmount, no error. When you (re-mount) it says:

"com.apple.DiskManagement.disenter error -119930868"

I've looked at the other questions with the error number, but this problem seems to be unique.

Middle click on trackball

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 07:12 PM PDT

I just upgraded to a M1 Monterey Mac and I have a Kensington orbit trackball with two mouse buttons. On Pre-Monterey, I could (with Kensington Trackball works) press the left and right mouse button simultaneously and get a middle click.

Is there a software that can do this on Monterey?

BetterTouchTool didn't seem to have support for this, and steermouse required holding one mouse button and then pressing the other, rather than simultaneously pressing both.

iPhone keeps connecting and disconnecting from Mac when charging

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 04:12 AM PDT

When my I connect my iPhone 7 to my MacBook Air (2015) with the original Apple USB cable it endlessly alternate between connected and disconnected, i.e. charging and not charging. Thus, the iPhone does not charge and even discharge. How to solve this issue?

Note: cables and connectors are fine. the cable works properly when charging with the power adapter. I also checked with other cables (MFI certified) and on all USB ports of the Mac and the issue is still present.

Also, as far as I remember, I had this issue since my first Apple devices (iPod Touch 2G with MacBook Air 2013) and it affected all my iPhones since (3GS, 4S, 7).

I also want to point out that this issue does not occur each time I plug my iPhone to my Mac but only sometimes and at random moments.

How do I ensure that my Mac mini will *always* connect to my Synology NAS with the username and password saved in the Keychain?

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 04:34 AM PDT

I have a Mac mini - Intel i5 Mid 2011 - running MacOS High Sierra - the latest version of the OS it will allow to run - with all suitable software updates.

I have a Mac admin user with a username and password.

I have set it to automatically log this user in. (see below for how)

I have a Synology DiskStation NAS - running DSM 7.0.1-42218 Update 3.

It has SMB File Sharing enabled, and one shared volume.

Both devices are connected via ethernet to my WiFi hub - an Apple AirPort Extreme.

The shared volume is protected by a username and password distinct from the Mac user username/password.

I have manually mounted the shared volume, entered the username and password, and saved it in the Mac user's keychain.

I have an application that accesses data on the mounted shared volume set to launch at startup. (see below for how)

Every time the Mac mini boots, it automatically logs in as the user and launches the application. (see below for how)

Most times - about nine out of ten times - when the application is launched, it connects to the shared volume and mounts it (with username and password).

Occasionally - about one time out of every ten, it attempts to mount the drive - and pops up a dialog asking for the username and password.

How can I prevent the Mac from forgetting the saved login in the keychain OR how can I prevent the Synology from rejecting the keychain-provided password (I don't know why this happens - how can I investigate further)?

It is not as consistent as definitely every tenth attempt.

And it is made worse by the fact that this Mac mini is running headless and so I don't even see the dialog until I find that my Application is not running, and so I investigate

Update

I am auto-logging in to the Mac through Settings --> Users & Groups --> Login Options --> Automatically Login.

And I am auto-logging in to the Shared Volume because I have saved the username & password in Keychain the first time I connected to it.

The app is being launched through Settings --> Users & Groups --> Login Items

Type special characters similar to Windows

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 04:26 AM PDT

My son follows an online typing course for school. This course is offert through a website. As my son advances, he needs to type characters like: è, é, ë, ü, ï.

We have not found a way to type these characters in a way it satisfies the typing course. I think the site expects you to type a sequence of characters.

For example, to type the é I think it expects an ' + e. We tried multiple ways of typing these characters but have not found a way to satisfy the course software.

These tricks did not work for me:

  • When you holddown on the e key the typingcourse software directly registers an e and it is counted as a wrong keystroke.
  • When you press the ' MacOS directly prints the character which is not the character the typingcourse software expects and it is counted as a wrong keystroke.

Is there a way to mimic the Windows way of doing the keystrokes? Preferably without any additional software installs like Keyboard Maestro of similar.

And yes, I have send an email to the supplier but have not heard anything yet.

Why are there two apps called “python” and "python launcher" seperately?

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 10:07 PM PDT

enter image description hereWhy are there 'Python' and 'Python launcher'? What's the difference?

"Python launcher" is in Applications/python 3.10/python launcher

"python" is in the MacintoshHD/library/frameworks/python.frameworks/resources/python app

I can't run python files that use modules using 'Python launcher' but can by using the 'Python' app.

And I can run a python file from anywhere, maybe Desktop or in a folder or anything by using 'Python launcher'. But in the 'Python' app, it either works on the Desktop or a specific place and is strictly not inside folders. (if I run, it's displaying an error as the directory cannot be found.)

The current version of python I use is 3.11 (I know only 3.10 is the most recent version. But I have accidentally downloaded a pre-release. It's the sixth of the seven alpha releases.)

Password protect recovery mode apple silicon with new Recovery Lock Command

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 03:05 AM PDT

I am trying to restrict the ability for my child to access recovery mode on mac to keep filtering software in place. On intel macs you can set a firmware passcode that is separate from the admin user account passcode (which I do want child to have access to).

Apple seems to have started to address this missing feature with M1 Macs here: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/devicemanagement/set_recovery_lock_command

My question is, can someone help me figure out how to actually implement this on an individual machine without an MDM server?

Or alternatively - I'm mainly wanting to restrict the ability to boot into safe mode specifically. So if anyone has any ideas on how to do that - that would be helpful as well.

Cursor Lag / Stutter & Media Blacked Out

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 08:03 PM PDT

Wondering if anyone has a solution to the HDCP issues with external monitors. I'm fairly desperate for a solution.

I have a 2019 MBP 16, and I'm having cursor lag/stuttering, and media is blacked out on my new LG 4K monitor. Seems to be very, very common and yet I haven't found a solution anywhere.

Things I've tried:

  • Reset smc and pram.
  • All different cables (currently using usb-c to DP).
  • All different resolutions and refresh rates.
  • The "detect displays" trick.
  • Safe mode (no problem in safe mode).
  • Toggling the auto graphics switching.
  • Disconnecting all other usb peripherals, and tried every port.
  • Resetting everything on the monitor.
  • Downloaded LG's OnScreen Control, and Screen Manager; neither has any firmware update available or solution

Weird things:

  • Worked fine for about 2 hours after first hook up.
  • Works fine for about 1 minute after turning the monitor off and on.
  • Older monitors work great.

I'm working on a graduation project from a programming boot camp, so reinstalling OS or upgrading to Big Sur is a little too risky right now, plus I've read it actually gets worse with Big Sur.

I spend 12hrs a day working on this laptop, so if anyone has any input, I would be very grateful. It sounds like a common problem, and I find it hard to believe people are living with the mouse lag day to day.

Thank you!

Trash moved to Other, wasn't removed

How can I disconnect my profile from a dead OSX Server?

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 09:06 PM PDT

I had a mac mini server with OSX server. The profile I user on my iMac was created on the server, and some groups where on the server, which was also a server for TM backups. For now, the user on the iMac is Admin, Managed, Mobile. The server died recently (in fact, with the different downgrades of the server App by Apple, at the end it was just serving files), but the user on the iMac is still locked to it.

For example, I can't change password anymore...

What can I do to transform the managed account into a normal independent account on the iMac?

Make FileVault password different from user login password?

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 04:02 AM PDT

In macOS Catalina, I want to specifically set a different (and longer) password for unlocking FileVault (e.g. when I first turn my MacBook Pro on) vs. a shorter password to use in more casual contexts like unlocking after sleep or when prompted for the admin user password.

Is this possible?

Usually, people have wanted the opposite. But in Catalina I've tried changing it to be different in both System Preferences > Users & Groups > Change Password... and System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Change Password... and it makes them both sync up in either case.

I remember in older versions of macOS I would have to enter a different password for FileVault vs. your user password (if they were different). I'm wanting this distinction back.

My user account is the default and only administrator in the system.

Is there a Terminal command to specify user password as distinct from FileVault password?

How to sync iPhone Voice Memos to the Mac via USB without using iCloud?

Posted: 28 Apr 2022 11:07 PM PDT

I have no interest in iCloud for syncing sizeable data like Voice Memos. It is quickest for me to just connect my iPhone to my Mac via the USB cable and do my syncing that way.

Many changes have occurred in recent times, with iTunes now completely replaced on the Mac.

On Catalina 10.15.2 and iOS 13.3, this is what it currently looks like:

There are many Voice memos on my iPhone:

enter image description here

But on my macOS Finder I do not see a mention anywhere of Voice Memos being present on my iPhone:

enter image description here

enter image description here

Similarly, in my Mac's Music.app there is simply nothing showing up as detected on my iPhone:

enter image description here

As for Voice Memos.app, there appears to be no connection to the iOS counterpart whatsoever, it is empty:

Has Apple abandoned USB transfer functionality between the iPhone and the Mac?

How can I do this? Do we now have to use third party tools like AnyTrans despite these both being Apple devices?

How switch Mac UK PC keyboard layout backslash \ and backtick ` to match normal UK PC layout

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 05:33 AM PDT

This is the normal UK PC Keyboard Layout:

enter image description here

We can see the backslash is on the left-bottom corner (right of shift).

But the mac configuration for UK PC layout, the backslash is on the left-top corner (left of the number 1), see the setting as follow:

enter image description here

So when I use both mac and windows together, this key always confuse me with different output!

UK layout keyboard is ISO standard and the Mac also detects ISO. The only issue is the key on the left of z is switched with the key on the left of 1.

The layout of the UK keyboard:

  1. the key on the left of z should be:\ and |
  2. the key on the left of 1 should be: ` and ¬

But mac switches them.

Change Mac Keyboard Identifier after keyboard replacement

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 05:36 AM PDT

I replaced my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013) keyboard. The U.S keyboard layout is mapped incorrectly now. It seems to be a problem with the keyboard identifier ID (maybe its Bundle ID). It looks like to be Japanese now but I need to change it back to english (I can't achieve this by changing input source and keyboard layout).
