Why is my system running out of application memory when there is plenty of free disk space to swap?

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 02:28 PM PDT

I am running some extremely memory intensive calculations that can balloon to use a great deal of memory for a process (a java program). I have increased the maximum java heap size to 96 GB to allow for this. Java memory usage gets to approximately 75 GB, and then my system comes to a halt and I begin to get "out of application memory" errors.

Similarly, when one of my python processes expands to beyond 96 GB of memory usage, it is forcibly killed by the OS.

I have 16 GB of physical ram and >1.5TB of free SSD space for swap; why would I be running out of memory? Why doesn't swap expand further? I am running Monterey 12.3.1 on an M1 system.

Is it safe to use `trash-cli` on macOS?

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 01:43 PM PDT

Introduction

I would like to use trash-cli on macOS. Reading its homepage, it uses ~/.local/share/Trash/, while macOS' Trash is ~/.Trash.

I was thinking, I could create a symlink pointing to macOS' Trash. To test this, here is what I ran:

% cd ~/.local/share % ln -s ~/.Trash Trash % ls ~/.Trash % touch deleteme % mv deleteme Trash % ls ~/.Trash deleteme

So, it seems like this method works.

Testing trash-cli

Indeed, when I installed trash-cli, the command works (with the caveat of using a different format):

[nix-shell:/tmp]$ touch deleteme2 [nix-shell:/tmp]$ trash deleteme2 [nix-shell:/tmp]$ tree ~/.Trash/ /Users/redacted/.Trash/ ├── deleteme ├── files │   └── deleteme2 └── info └── deleteme2.trashinfo 2 directories, 3 files [nix-shell:/tmp]$ trash-list 2022-04-29 15:23:37 /private/tmp/deleteme2

However, when I tried running trash-empty, it showed that it would delete other directories:

[nix-shell:/tmp]$ trash-empty Would empty the following trash directories: - /Users/redacted/.local/share/Trash - /.Trash-501 - /System/Volumes/VM/.Trash-501 - /System/Volumes/Preboot/.Trash-501 - /System/Volumes/Update/.Trash-501 - /System/Volumes/xarts/.Trash-501 - /System/Volumes/iSCPreboot/.Trash-501 - /System/Volumes/Hardware/.Trash-501 - /System/Volumes/Data/.Trash-501 - /nix/.Trash-501 - /System/Volumes/Update/mnt1/.Trash-501 Proceed? (y/n) n

I believe these are all user trashes, as my user number is 501. However, it's still a bit worrying.

My question

Is it safe to symlink .Trash and use trash-cli as normal?

How to use `netstat' to show utun (socket) interfaces?

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 02:37 PM PDT

I've looked through help using help netstat and can't see a way to just show tun interfaces (or sockets).

I found one netstat option that isn't listed in the help, netstat -u which only shows "Active LOCAL (UNIX) domain sockets".

I can grep the results of that command for ".sock" but would like to only one command.

I am wondering if there are any more "unlisted" netstat options for the mac version of netstat.

Does Xcode have a graphic editor

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 01:40 PM PDT

ALL,

Looking for a way to create a cursor inside an Xcode.

Google gives nothing in this regards - it just produces a lot of un-useful links, even for SO.

I'm looking for something like a Resource Editor in MSVC, where you can create a bitmap/menu/cursor, save it and then later use it in your program.

If the answer is - Xcode doesn't have a graphic editor - then what can I use to create a cursor {custom} file

can't upload to TestFlight tab on App Store Connect

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 12:50 PM PDT

Problem: No builds in my TESTFLIGHT page.

Here's what I do...

  1. Create Xcode Swift project

  2. Create App ID on Apple Developer Identifiers page for project's Bundle ID

  3. Add new app to App Store Connect for project's Bundle ID (page spinner never stops)

  4. Upload/distribute Xcode project

App > Testflight page shows BUILDS "No builds"

Any problem moving custom domain to iCloud when my Apple ID already uses that custom domain?

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 12:02 PM PDT

I have a custom domain example.com I use for email with Google Workspace. My Apple ID is also on that domain.

I want to move example.com to iCloud+ but have seen mentions this is hard or impossible when the Apple ID that purchased iCloud+ is already on the custom domain. E.g. my Apple ID is user@example.com.

Before I start I would like to be sure the migration is likely to succeed.

Has anyone moved a custom domain to iCloud+ that they were already using as the domain for their Apple ID, successfully? Any pitfalls or tips?

Air Tag not showing on "Find My" on my Mac

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 01:38 PM PDT

I just bought an AirTag to be able to track my bike in case it gets stolen. Thing is, I have an iPad Pro, an MacBook Pro, but no iPhone.

I added the AirTag with my iPad which worked great. The tag is now showing in my "Find My" app as supposed to under "Items".

Anyhow, when opening the "Find My" app on my MacBook pro, I don't get the AirTag, or any other items in the "items" list.

  • MacBook Pro is from 2017, it runs Monterey 12.3.1
  • iPad Pro is a model "MLQ62FD/A" running iOS 15.2.1
  • Both devices are logged in with the same AppleID
  • Location sharing in the settings is set to "on" on both devices
  • "Find My" is "on" on both devices in iCloud settings

How do I fix this so that the AirTag is showing up in the Find My app on my MacBook pro?

MacBook Pro Panics Way More Than It Should

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 01:19 PM PDT

I've got a 16-inch 2019 MacBook Pro, 2.3 GHz Intel i9 and over the last few months it has started to panic now and then. Way more than it should.

I started with the usual things, making sure everything was updated, there was no unnecessary software installed, cleaned up caches, temp files and the like. Even starting in Safe Mode did nothing different. It would still panic once or twice a day.

So I backed it up, reformatted the SSD and reinstalled macOS fresh. I restored from Time Machine using Migration Assistant and only restored my user folder, no apps.

After running for a week or so I had cut back on the number of panics, I think it was just one that week. Over the next few weeks I slowly installed a few apps, one at a time waiting a few days or so between installations, to see if there was an obvious culprit. Just my needful basics: 1Password, TorGuard VPN, Brave, Firefox, etc. and I stated to get a few panics but the number was way down from before the reinstall.

As I use the Mac (general computing, word processing, web browsers, mail.app, VPN now and then) I continue to get the panics but the frequency is reduced, but when I do get a panic it's usually in Safari. So I switch to Brave and while a little better, not substantially so. Trying Firefox it remains about the same.

I continue to get the occasional (once or maybe twice a week) notification that the computer was restarted because of a problem, when waking the Mac.

So the frequency of panics is a little lower than before I did a clean reinstall it is still way more than it should be at 3-5 times a week. Unfortunately the panic log that is sent to Apple means nothing to me and I was wondering if someone conversant in panic logs might have a quick look and see if they see a culprit. The one below happened when I was in Firefox reading a web page. The system locked up, screen went black, displayed the panic screen and rebooted.

I am starting to think that this is a hardware issue and maybe I need to trade this beast in for a new MacBook Pro, sigh...

script menu keeps disappearing from menu bar

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 12:15 PM PDT

The script menu (and only the script menu) keeps disappearing from my menu bar (MacBook Air). It happens on my current Mojave, but has been happening through previous OS as well.

I know how to open the Script Editor and change the preference so that it reappears. I know that it stays on for some time; but I have no clue how long, and why it disappears.

I don't want to do dig into the SE preference every time I want to use a script. The whole thing is about to be saving time!

This community has been informative in the past, so I thought I'd drop this quick challenge here.

Linker command failed (clang-13)

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 09:55 AM PDT

I'm installing this software for my research, but I'm getting this macOS-related error (macOS Monterey 12.3.1) and I'm not quite sure if it is something I can handle myself or if I should contact the support team:

>> Building libDelphesNoFastJet.dylib ld: -rpath can only be used when targeting Mac OS X 10.5 or later clang-13: error: linker command failed with exit code 1 (use -v to see invocation) make: *** [libDelphesNoFastJet.dylib] Error 1

It's mostly tcl code with some c++ and I'm not sure how to decompose this error to dig deeper at a quick fix.

Any suggestions?

Keyboard shortcut to hide/show scrollbars?

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 07:55 AM PDT

I keep scrollbar visibility set to show only when scrolling. Nice and clean. Love it. Every once in a while, however, I need to grab a scrollbar.

Is there a keyboard shortcut to toggle the hide/show status of scrollbars? If not a keyboard shortcut, is there a quicker way to get the scrollbars to appear (quicker than going into System Prefs every time, that is).

(Yes, I know they appear temporarily when I'm scrolling.)

Pressing the "Opt" key to show Lauchpad

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 07:58 AM PDT

In KDE Plasma I was able to press the Win key and the overview menu has been shown with my apps, favorites, recent, etc.

I would like a similar behavior for my Mac - just because of the muscle memory.

So, I would like to press the Opt key and after the release it would show the Launchpad.

But at the same time I still want to retain the ability to use the Opt key in combinations with other keys to trigger shortcuts, etc.

Any idea how can it be done?

HomePod as a voice-activated dialing device

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 09:36 AM PDT

I would like to plant two listening devices (HomePods) in the house for dad, such that he can verbally call mom's iPhone or sister's iPhone. We are retiring dad's iPhone and the cellular service as he no longer uses it. Assume dad has lost use of his hands

Given the retirement of dad's iPhone, can the HomePod be configured to achieve said objective to verbally connect to mom's or sister's iPhone? Would this be confined to FaceTime audio?

Can an iPod or iPad be substituted for an iPhone if using FaceTime Audio in this exercise?

How to stop constant re-upload/re-download of my iCloud files?

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 11:59 AM PDT

I recently acquired a MacBook Pro (Retina), OS Monterey, and turned iCloud syncing on for Documents and Desktop. It had downloaded (made local copies) more than 200GB of files from my iCloud, then auto-deleted half of them (locally), "Optimise storage" is checked.

After about a day, it started a download of that large amount of files again, it took nearly 5 hours, although I hadn't clicked the download or remove download button near the files. It repeated; it happens once in about +/- 5 days plus the total size of files being downloaded is always different. The cache which is created by this process can be as large as I have 1 GB of the local storage remaining (totally I have 255 GB). The button X near the progress of download isn't clickable. I want to keep important files locally and download any other ones if they are needed.

In another thread someone suggested using this command killall bird && rm -rf CloudDocs, after removing them, it just starts re-uploading and re-downloading all possible files, which takes much time. Please tell me how to get rid of this auto re-download/upload, it is a useless process that eats system resources.

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 02:05 PM PDT

Google Chrome fails to load on Mac OS, with the following error:

Google Chrome error: "Cannot open. Cannot reach Citrix Workspace."

It says:

Cannot open. Cannot reach Citrix Workspace.

And there is a floating loading windowlet underneath, with a spinner that says:

Starting Google Chrome...

And it has a Cancel button.

I used to have Citrix Workspace from working with a client, which is a shitty VPN thing that nobody should ever use. It has since been deleted, but it looks like I'll have to do some digging to rip it out completely.

Does anyone have an idea for how to fix this?

Best compression format for backing up many MacOS files (7Z, GZIP, BZIP2, etc)? [closed]

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 11:44 AM PDT

I want to take a backup of the folder ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync which houses my iOS Backups on my MacOS computer.

To do the backup, I'm planning on archiving this folder with file compression, using the application Keka. However, I am unsure which file compression format is suitable for this (e.g. 7Z, GZIP, BZIP2, etc) – and what are the appropriate settings for the selected format.

My objectives are:

  1. To make the archive reliable for extraction in the future.
  2. To make it take up as little space as possible, however with reliability (1. above) being the most important objective.

What is the appropriate file compression format for backups of MacOS files – also considering MacOS metadata – given these objectives, and what are the appropriate settings – e.g. should I use "Solid Archive" or not?

NB: Keka currently seems to support the formats: 7Z, ZIP, TAR, GZIP, BZIP2, XZ, LZIP, BROTLI, ZSTD, LRZIP, AAR, WIM, DMG, ISO

Time Machine Backup fails from new apfs Volume

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 12:07 PM PDT

I had 11.6 Big Sur on an apfs volume, installed 12.0.1 Monterey on a different volume, deleted the first volume

Now Time Machine Backup fails:

Time Machine could't complete the backup to "…"
An error occurred while preparing the backup.
Button: OK
  log show --predicate 'subsystem == "com.apple.TimeMachine"'  2021-11-12 15:51:19.822567-0800 0x1ed985   Error       0x0                  230    0    backupd: (TimeMachine) [com.apple.TimeMachine:General] Backup failed (301: BACKUP_FAILED_PREFLIGHT_STAGE_DATABASE_GENERATION)  2021-11-12 16:34:53.380762-0800 0x1f0581   Error       0x0                  230    0    backupd: (TimeMachine) [com.apple.TimeMachine:EventCollection] No event store UUID for volume  '/Volumes/Recovery HD'

Key log output: No event store UUID for volume '/Volumes/Recovery HD'.

It seems Recovery HD has some storage uuid that is no longer available

What's the action?

How to delete a system file as an admin

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 02:49 PM PDT

I am an "admin" user on a Mac running Big Sur. I am trying to remove a symlink:

$ ls -al /usr/bin/python  lrwxr-xr-x  1 root  wheel  75 Jan  1  2020 /usr/bin/python -> ../../System/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/2.7/bin/python2.7

Now, I tried removing it with sudo but I get permission denied:

$ sudo rm /usr/bin/python rm: /usr/bin/python: Operation not permitted

How do I assume actual admin power on my mac? Do I need to be added to the "wheel" group?

Please note, I am well aware of workarounds with shell aliases as outlined here:

Unable to upgrade to python 3.6 from python 2.7

But that would only be a work around. I want to know what the root cause is, and what I can do about it.

How can I get accurate information about disk space used/available in Big Sur via the command line?

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 01:23 PM PDT

Summary:

I would like to be able to tell how much disk space I have used and how much I have available (in GB) in Big Sur in a simple format suitable for parsing in a shell script or similar.

Details

Finder reports that my internal SSD is 995 GB and has 568 GB free.

Simple math tells us that means I have used 427 GB.

So… how can I get 568 GB and/or 427 GB from the command line?

Hint: The answer is not df

If I do df -H / I will get this result (truncated for readability and to just the parts of the output we care about):

Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity /dev/disk3s1s1 995G 15G 528G 3%

15G might be how much the read-only volume takes up, but the "available" amount is off by 40G.

Of course we know that there's now a separate 'Data' volume. So let's check that using df -H /System/Volumes/Data:

Filesystem Size Used Avail Capacity /dev/disk3s5 995G 445G 528G 46%

445G used is relatively close to the actual amount of 427G but if you add up the "Used" (445G) and "Available" (528G) you get 973G.

There must be some way to do it…

I have noticed that other apps such as iStat Menus and MakeMKV are both able to display accurate information about the remaining disk space. So it's not as if the system is incapable of revealing this information.

If there is another tool besides df that can do this, please let me know.

Bonus points if it comes standard with macOS (bash, zsh, python, ruby, whatever), but if it can be installed via brew or similar, I'll take it.

What I'm asking for seems very simple, but I can't figure out how to do it.

p.s. - yes, I'm aware of macOS' features about "purgeable space" and all that. Not interested. I just want to be able to get the same numbers shown in Finder, iStat Menus, etc. from the command line.

how to ignore all the node_modules folders from time machine

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 08:13 AM PDT

How to add the node_modules folder paths to time machine ignore paths. These folders are like tmp data for backups. These are very dense folders and also slow down TM. Is there is a txt file which can be appended? Maybe a command line which can append to the config.

Mac: DRM removal for Apple TV-purchased movies?

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 09:57 AM PDT

I have the latest macOS (Catalina). Are there any DRM removal software that will work with the Apple TV app on my Mac? The most popular software (DVDFab, TunesKit, etc.) work with iTunes only, but iTunes only exists on iPhones. I downloaded my Apple TV-purchased movie to my Mac, which has a .movpkg file extension. I tried using TunesKit, but it won't even open the downloaded movie. I'm just looking to convert the file extension and play in VLC so I can take a screenshot from a movie scene.

I understand that Apple blanks DRM from screen recording and I still want to snap occasional still frames.

Is this technically possible?

Page Up / Page Down shortcut keys with moving keyboard cursor

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 11:22 AM PDT

I am trying to find an equivalent to Page Up / Page Down keys on a Windows machine. On a Windows machine if I press Page Up or Page Down in a text editor (such as Microsoft Word or notepad++) the keyboard cursor moves as well.

The closest I found on a MacBook is to use FN + Arrow Up or FN + Arrow Down. This does do Page Up / Page Down for viewing. However, it does not move the keyboard cursor. How do I get the keyboard cursor to move a page up or down?

How do I move a window whose title bar is off-screen?

Posted: 29 Apr 2022 11:00 AM PDT

I encountered a strange problem today. I downloaded FileZilla and on first launch the title bar was above my mouse pointer's reach. Making the window unmovable.

Here is a screenshot of my situation.

Is there a way to fix this? I've tried reopening the application and rebooting.
