Time Machine Error: "An error occurred while copying files" [closed]

Posted: 01 Apr 2022 02:07 AM PDT

I have an iMac(21.5-inch, Mid 2011) running macOS High Sierra, and I'm trying to back up all my data to a 1TB hard drive using Time Machine. When it backs up about 35GB out of 50GB, it says: "An error occurred while copying files. The problem may be temporary. If the problem persists, use Disk Utility to repair your backup disk." I don't see any option to "repair disk" in the disk utility. I'm newer to mac and can't figure out how to fix this issue. Can anyone help me?

Steam app data files using twice the expected disk space on Mac OS Monterey [closed]

Posted: 01 Apr 2022 12:39 AM PDT

My son wanted a game from steam, which said it required 40GiB disk space. Sure, done. Installed, but I noticed it was using 80GiB disk space, but didn't think much of it, until it decided to auto-patch and ran out of disk space.

Digging into the install, there's a single file, as reported by the Finder & ls, that is ~37GiB in size. It is using ~75GiB disk space according to the Finder and du.

sh$ pwd /Users/zz/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Tropico 6/Tropico6.app/Contents/UE4/Tropico6/Content/Paks sh$ ls -l pakchunk0-MacNoEditor.pak -rwxr-xr-x 1 zz staff 40001130623 31 Mar 17:12 pakchunk0-MacNoEditor.pak sh$ du -k pakchunk0-MacNoEditor.pak 78127216 pakchunk0-MacNoEditor.pak sh$ ls -lh pakchunk0-MacNoEditor.pak -rwxr-xr-x 1 zz staff 37G 31 Mar 17:12 pakchunk0-MacNoEditor.pak sh$ du -h pakchunk0-MacNoEditor.pak 75G pakchunk0-MacNoEditor.pak

Finder file info

Searching around, I see mention of timemachine snapshots (tmutil listlocalsnapshots shows none), sparse files (no, they generally show the opposite, large eof and small usage), APFS compression (stat -f %f pakchunk0-MacNoEditor.pak returns zero, and afscexpand does nothing).

What could this be? A bad fallocate(2) by steam (does Mac OS X even have that)? A copy of the file in another logical fork? Multiple write heads leading to some weird internal fragmentation? Something else? What weird thing has Apple managed to do this time?

Update: fwiw, a Duplicate+Delete+Rename in the Finder fixed this one file (ie. released 40GB disk space), and I assume thanks to the APFS clone functionality, did so without copying any data.

My backups are not showing up at all despite taking up space

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 11:27 PM PDT

I recently created a partition (APFS, Case-Sensitive, Encrypted) on a hard drive to use as a Time Machine backup for my MacBook (Air, 2020, M1, running Monterey 12.0.1). I then used Time Machine to back up my machine. The problem is that it doesn't seem like the backup exists at all.

This is what is shown on Time Machine in System Preferences:

enter image description here

This is what I see when I look at the partition from Finder.

enter image description here

(.Spotlight-V100 takes up 580 KB of space according to Finder, so it can't possibly contain the Time Machine Backup)

I did try running sudo ls -la but I got Permission Denied.

Despite this, something definitely was transferred. iStats showed that the partition filled up while I ran Time Machine:

enter image description here

I did try backing up again, and enabling Automatic backups. The amount of data that was transferred in both cases was about 300 MB (i.e. not all of my computer's data is backed up), but still nothing appeared in Finder and System Preferences still told me that nothing was backed up.

What can I do to resolve this?

How to terminate an unarchive process safely?

Posted: 01 Apr 2022 01:36 AM PDT

I was trying to unzip a downloaded Xcode xip file. The unarchiving has been running for hours so I tried to cancel it. Now it is stuck in cancelling.

I think it took such a long time was because I was running low of disk space. Is there any safe way to kill this process and reclaim any working space?

External Display Keeps Switching Refresh Rates After Waking From Sleep

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 05:56 PM PDT

I recently set up my new Mac Studio with my Samsung CRG9 external monitor, that supports up to a 5120 X 1440 resolution at 120Hz. I set my Mac Studio to run at that resolution and refresh rate, but for some reason whenever I wake my Mac from sleep, the refresh rate will switch to the "Variable (48Hz-120Hz)" setting. I don't want the variable refresh rate on this display, I would like it to just stick to the full 120Hz refresh rate at that resolution at all times because it makes moving things around the display a bit jittery when using the variable one. Not sure why it's switching back to variable after waking it from sleep but is there a way to prevent this?

Like I said, using a new Mac Studio running macOS 12.3.1, and a Samsung CRG9 external display.

Folder Action runs for no reason

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 05:26 PM PDT

I have the on adding folder items to event handler attached to my ~/Desktop folder. It works for what it does but, annoyingly, it also runs when I simply open my Desktop folder (i.e. press Cmd-Shift-D) or even leave my Desktop folder (Cmd-Up). This wouldn't be a big problem if it weren't for the annoying gear icon that flashes as a result in the menu bar.

I don't see why it would run when clearly files aren't being added.

Is there any way to (a) prevent these false positives or (b) hide the gear icon all together?

macOS core files: how can I enable them and can I enable them for specific applications?

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 08:50 PM PDT

I have found discussions on these sites about macOS core files but the ones I found are old and do not address a core file created by an application that is launched from Finder.

I would like to help in the debugging of Emacs. I have built it myself and I have it so it launches from Finder. If / when it core dumps, a Report dialog comes up but that isn't really going to help me or the Emacs developers but a core file would. The problem is, /cores is currently empty. I see reports in ~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Retired/Emacs-* but they are text files probably what is sent in the "Report" dialog.

I get that core files are big and ugly and raise customer's questions so I get why they are turned off by default. What I'd like to do is turn it back on. And, if possible, turn it on only for specific applications like Emacs to prevent /cores from filling up with useless grot.

TL; DR --

  1. How can I turn on core files for applications launched from Finder?
  2. Can I turn on core file creation for specific applications?

Swap text blocks in Notepad++ [closed]

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 02:10 PM PDT

Thanks for looking! Here's the problem:
So I work for a company that uses dictation software and over the years we've accumulated hundreds of macros for this software, many of my coworkers are in a similar boat with some even in the thousands of macros. The position we now find ourselves in is that the company wants to change the format of our reports, and while this is not unusual there is a specific change that makes this troublesome because they want to change the order of in our reports. Here is an example of one of my macros

{\rtf1\ansi\ansicpg1252\deff0\nouicompat\deflang1033{\fonttbl{\f0\fnil Arial;}} {\colortbl ;\red0\green0\blue0;} {*\generator Riched20 10.0.17763}\viewkind4\uc1 \pard\cf1\f0\fs24 CLINICAL SUMMARY:\par \par SITE:\par \par CYTOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION\par Slides contain moderate numbers of scattered individual and aggregates of lightly pigmented, superficial keratinized squamous cells. The background contains red blood cells, and scattered smudged/fragmented nuclei within a finely granular exudate. No evidence of inflammation or malignancy seen. \par \par CYTOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION:\par The cytological findings are consistent with a pigmented, keratinizing cyst. \par \par COMMENTS:\par Differentials should include; follicular cyst, intracutaneous cornifying epithelioma, trichoepithelioma and keratoacanthoma. No evidence of malignancy seen.\par \par

What I need to do is swap CYTOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION and the text below it with CYTOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION and the text below that so that their positions are inverted. Keep in mind there are usually 100 to 500+ swaps needed across all our macros, so finding a way to do this with automation would be very handy. To add to the complication the text below each is unique and can be multiple lines.

Is there an easy way to do this?

Thank you!

Portable USB-C Monitor locks up 16" Macbook Pro 2019

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 01:13 PM PDT

I just bought a small portable 1080p 14" USB-C Monitor to use with my 2019 16" Macbook Pro: https://www.amazon.de/ARZOPA-Tragbarer-1920x1080-Bildschirm-Telefon-Silber/dp/B09Q2WYRKD

For some reason, when it's plugged in, the monitor powers up, then immediately says 'No signal', then my Macbook Pro locks up where the mouse freezes, screen goes dark, then appears back much darker and is just frozen.

As soon as I unplug the monitor, the laptop is perfectly usable again immediately.

I recorded console logs and noticed a few errors that seem relevant:

default 22:03:10.708481+0200 WindowServer [WARN] - IOFBSetDisplayModeAndDepth: Failed to obtain mode info from IOFBGetDisplayModeInformation() default 22:03:10.708554+0200 kernel [3:0:0] [FB:0] AmdRadeonFramebuffer::getPixelInformation() !!! Invalid display mode: 0xc0003068.

Plugging it into an M1 Macbook Air works perfectly so it isn't a hardware/cable issue and both machines are running Monterey 12.3

/usr/local/Cellar is completely empty. I expected libraries

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 01:00 PM PDT

I have been using homebrew for some time now and have never had problems. Now I am wanting to link some libraries (GLEW, GLFW) for a C++ project. I was told to look in /usr/local/Cellar but is completely empty (ls -a yields only ., ..) I have looked all over the /usr/local directory for them, but to no avail. I have tried reinstalling them as well as restarting my computer.
If anyone has some tips on this, I would be very grateful. Thank you!

I can view folders on my external harddrive but not files

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 11:20 PM PDT

Using a Macbook Pro, 2015, system 10.14, I have an external harddrive and when I plug it into my laptop the folders will show up in the Finder but not the files. But this only happens some of the time. Usually what happens is the topmost folders will appear and yes, the files that are topmost, and then when you click on the folders nothing appears inside of them even though there are subfolders within them. I've tried repairing the disk with disk utility but I got the following error message: First Aid could not unmount the disk. Also when I try to view the files and open them with terminal, that also does not work.

Also, if I cannot solve this problem myself, do you recommend sending my harddrive to a company that specializes in data recovery?

Shortcut to switch to a given input source

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 10:13 PM PDT

Is there a way to create a keyboard shortcut for each individual input source, so that I can pick whichever input source I want, simply using the keyboard, without having to scroll through a whole list of them? Note that I use the application Ukelele to make custom keyboards, if that has any bearing on potential answers.

How to create a URL link in Numbers from a CSV file

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 08:22 PM PDT

I have a CSV file that I open in Numbers, I need one of the cells to be a URL clickable link though, and in the CSV file if I use something like this, it does not turn into a clickable link in Numbers:

=HYPERLINK("https://www.apple.com","Apple")

If I type in the above in a cell in the Numbers app, then it automatically turns into a clickable link with the words "Apple".

I am guessing if Numbers opens a CSV file, it does not support functions such as =HYPERLINK. Perhaps it has to be a Numbers formatted file for it to support functions?

Is there a way to "ask" Numbers to open a CSV file in Numbers format so that it can understand the HYPERLINK function?

Unusual errors with xcodebuild

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 02:24 PM PDT

I am getting the following messages when running xcodebuild from the command line:

xcodebuild[22187:279813] Requested but did not find extension point with identifier Xcode.IDEKit.ExtensionSentinelHostApplications for extension Xcode.DebuggerFoundation.AppExtensionHosts.watchOS of plug-in com.apple.dt.IDEWatchSupportCore

What does this mean, and how do I fix it?

I am running MacOS Monterey (12.3) on an Intel iMac. I have reinstalled Xcode, as well as downgrading from 13 to 12.3.1, and the behavior has not changed. Unfortunately, I can't do much more to troubleshoot at the moment, as I have no idea what any part of these messages means, and Googling has not been much help.

How to Edit a File in Folder Belonging to a User With No Login?

Posted: 01 Apr 2022 02:05 AM PDT

Pretty much as the title suggests. Is there a nice way of doing this? At the moment, I need to change permissions to the folder before being able to access the file.

Just to reiterate, the folder has no login capability, so I can't su to the user that the folder belongs to.

MacBook display stays on in clamshell mode

Posted: 01 Apr 2022 01:47 AM PDT

I'm running two external displays from a MacBook Pro 16 inch in closed clamshell mode.

I notice however that the internal display is still on as well: it is pictured as a third screen in System Preferences > Displays, and when I open the lid ever so slightly, I can see it.

When I use the laptop without external displays, the display turns off as it should when closing the lid.

I've tried to reset SMC and NVRAM but to no avail.

Older AppleTV 4K started having decoding artifacts a few months back. Factory reset didn't help. Is it just my device?

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 10:45 PM PDT

I have an A1842 AppleTV 4K (one of the first versions) that I have been very satisfied with and which functions as expected. A few months back I started noticing that the edges around persons in movies were ... strangely fuzzy when moving, but was unable to identify it closer. Resetting the device back then didn't change anything, nor resolution change, display update speed or anything else.

Now I found that the Disney movie "The Three Musketeers" that I bought from iTunes store showed this very clearly (on this device, all my other Apple devices are fine) and made a clip out of it. This screenshot shows an artifact in front of Goofys face.

screenshot showing artifact in front of Goofys face

The whole clip is at whole clip (I do not know how to add video to questions, please edit it in if you do).

Has anyone else seen this? If yes, is it a known problem, which can be fixed?

Unknown MAC address under Personal Hotspot usage

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 05:01 PM PDT

Context: Personal hotspot connection from iPhone 12 used on my MacBook Air.

Problem: Under Settings - Mobile Data - Personal Hotspot (iPhone), I see 2 data usage components:

1.5 GB - MacBook, and, 20.2 KB - A very suspicious looking MAC address: 4a:f1:1b:3a:7d:86

Further information: I changed password multiple times, but the issue persists. Sometimes, I also see "Other devices"...

What is going on? Is my security in danger? Could this be related to MAC randomisation?

Hard drive not showing in Recovery Mode despite reformat in HFS+

Posted: 01 Apr 2022 02:07 AM PDT

Same issue as related in this thread but I already did the following:

  • Re-created a new GPT (GUID) partition table (using GParted, Ubuntu)
  • Created an HFS+ partition specifically for my MacOS
  • Re-created an EFI system partition of +500Mb

And yet, when using the Internet Recovery Mode, two things happen:

  1. The wrong MacOS is being downloaded (Mac OS X Yosemite, instead of Monterrey)
  2. The HFS+ partition created does not show.

What did I miss?

A possible solution would be to reformat the hard drive using Diskutil (Terminal, Recovery Mode) but no idea how to target the correct hard drive.

This what my partition table looks like from GParted: enter image description here

And this is what my Disk Utility shows on Recovery Mode: enter image description here

Things to take into consideration:

  • I used to have an APFS hard drive before. But that must have been replaced by the HFS+ partition.
  • I did not use FileVault or encrypted the disk (have had a lot of problems in using that).

MacBook Pro Crashes When Switching from One Monitor to Two in Closed Clamshell

Posted: 01 Apr 2022 12:19 AM PDT

What I'm working with

  • MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015)
  • Processor 2.9 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5
  • Memory 8GB 1867 MHz DDR3
  • Startup is internal HD
  • Graphics Intel Iris 6100 1536 MB
  • MacOS 12.2
Situation

I started using my MacBook Pro in closed clamshell, desktop mode a couple weeks ago. On my desk I have two ASUS VS248H-P monitors where I have two HDMI switches plugged into them. On the other end of the switches is my MBP & a windoze machine (dell) for work. During the day, I normally run my right monitor (SCR2) on my MBP, left monitor (SCR1) on the dell. At the end of my day I would switch SCR1 from my dell to my MBP. Up until a couple days ago, I could flip the switches during the day, here and there, no problem, but all of sudden when I switch from the dell to the MBP on SCR1, (SCR2 has been on the MBP all day) SCR2 would dim but look like it's just hanging in space and is connected, waiting for SCR1 to pickup, and SCR1 would never look like it's making the switch. At this point I'd have to open the MBP and hold the power button down and reboot. I would then be able to work all night w/ both screens and no problems. Power is plugged in. Tried zapping PRAM.

A few things to note, MBP to SCR1 switch is a Thunderbolt to HDMI cable and MBP to SCR2 switch is HDMI. I have no other issues like this and did a clean reformat and reinstall of the MacOS two weeks ago before I set this all up - this screen issue only occurs around 5p when I switch SCR1 to the MBP. Currently plugged into the MBP, aside from the HDMI and Thunderbolt, is an Anker USB 10 port hub (one mouse switch, 4 ext HDs) and another ext HD.

Before I go too far and, I dunno, buy a new MBP, any ideas or thoughts on why this might be happening would be appreciated. I prefer to try and fix these things on my own and I'm stumped at this point. I did just send it in about a year ago to get the battery replaced.

Thanks,

andy

I cant get any apps to open anymore, how do I fix it?

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 02:01 PM PDT

I was trying to get apps to not pop up on the MacOS dock, even when they weren't closed and I found a thread with the same question as me. I looked through the answers area of the thread and this is what they said in the answers area:

This question references How to hide a specific active app on OS X (has to be reversible)?

This solution worked for me, but it might depend on the application in question. I tried it with a 3rd party app called "Burn" and it worked.

  1. Go to your applications folder and right click (control-click) on the app you wanna hide from the dock.

  2. Click on Show contents. You should now be able to see "inside" the app's files.

  3. Open the Info.plist file in the Contents folder with TextEdit (right click -> "Open with...")

  4. Go to the very bottom of the file and find the last two lines which should say:

</dict>
</plist>

  1. Now insert this before these two lines and save the file.

<key>LSUIElement</key>
<true/>

After this the app's dock icon will not be shown anymore. Keep in mind that you will need to use the Activity Monitor or Terminal (killall <appname>) to quit the app if you close the window.

If closing the window quits the app, you can press cmd + h to hide the window. This should make your app completely invisible.

To make it visible again, just remove those two lines again and the app should behave like before.

so, I was stupid and did this on almost all of my apps, without opening any of them in the process, and now they all won't open at all no matter what I do. I've removed the text, I reinstalled the apps, nothing worked.. Please tell me how to fix this, I need this laptop for work as it is my main machine.

Can't connect two monitors via elgato 3 dock

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 09:04 PM PDT

I've got a MBP 2020 with 4 thunderbolt displays and Intel Iris Plus Graphics + an Elgato 3 Thunderbolt Dock. I can't connect two displays (both Dell U2415) via the dock. I've connected one display via mini display to usb-c cable. This one works. I tried to connect the second one using an hdmi cable with an hdmi to usb-c dongle. This one doesn't work. The system doesn't register that monitor at all, like it's not connected. However, if I connect the monitor directly to the second thunderbolt dock of the computer, it works dine.

On a side note - I see that the dock isn't fully functional. There are 2 usb-a ports on the dock, but it looks like I can connect only one device to either of them. Tested this using three different docking stations and multiple monitors (same cables/dongles in all situations though).

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated :).

How does one activate a square bracket on a Spanish Magic keyboard?

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 10:07 PM PDT

I have problem on macOS Big Sur with an my square bracket on my Spanish magic keyboard

I need this to configure shortcuts for my Wacomb tablet and Photoshop.

I've tried changing keyboard language settings, pressing command + option together, option + button but so far to no avail. Can't copy or paste either.

Is there a guide or step for international keyboards to make code characters easier to type?

How can I highlight text on a screenshot using Markup in macOS?

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 12:18 PM PDT

When I take a screenshot in macOS Mojave, I get a handy screen with Markup tools to edit the screenshot. But I've never been able to get the "highlight" feature to work.

I want to highlight text on a page in yellow, similar to a highlighter pen. It looks like it should do it, but the highlighter tool is always disabled. Nothing I do seems to enable it.

Does this tool work? How can I use it?

How best to view the current time while gaming on iPad?

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 10:34 PM PDT

On iOS, in my case the iPad Air 2, games typically run in fullscreen, i.e. the status bar at the top is hidden. If I want to view the time, I have to pull down the Notification Center, which requires two swipes near the center of the upper edge of the screen, which in turn typically requires changing the grip on the device.

Is there any more convenient way to view the time during gameplay? Maybe even continously displaying the clock?

display partial file path on Finder tab title

Posted: 31 Mar 2022 06:05 PM PDT

Question

Is there a way to change the Finder tab title to include the name of the containing folder?

Problem

I work on projects that have the same standardized subfolder names (e.g., code), which makes it difficult to switch between projects without going through each tab to identify the containing folder.

Current state: ambiguous Finder tab titles for three different subfolders Ambiguous Finder tab titles for three different folders

Goal

I'd like to display the containing folder name as part of the Finder tab title. Extending the example, this would look like: projectA/code, projectB/code, etc.

Ideal solution (blue text only to emphasize the change): enter image description here

How to remove a user from staff group in macOS?

Posted: 01 Apr 2022 12:02 AM PDT

How on earth do I remove one of my local user accounts from the default "staff" group in macOS? I've tried many of the obscure commands in the command-line to no avail, i.e dscl, dseditgroup.

This is what I tried:

$ dsmemberutil checkmembership -U someuser -G staff user is a member of the group

Tried removing:

$ sudo dseditgroup -o edit -d someuser -t user staff

Checking membership:

$ dsmemberutil checkmembership -U someuser -G staff user is a member of the group

How come?

I want to remove a particular local account from the staff group so that it doesn't have access to the contents of home directories of other local accounts, amongst other things.

Any commands and/or GUIs that you can recommend for this?
