How can I Use iMAC 2017 Retina 5k as external monitor for MacBook Pro m1?

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 04:52 PM PDT

I want to use iMAC 2017 as external monitor for MacBook Pro m1. I know that iMAC is new for target display but it is old to be used using airplay. Screen sharing is another option but as MacBook has limited resolution so I only see small window on iMAC.

I want to know what are other custom options? I am fine with remote access too if there is some remote access with less lag, local network and full resolution.

Longterm macOS user here. German system, never had any contact to any kind of russian language or so. Suddenly my "Data" HDD/SSD on 2019 16" MacBook has a russian name.

This looks totally shady to me, has anybody a clue what's going on?

Minecraft hasn't been working for a while now. I've just been getting the same response over and over. Mods or any other version of Minecraft won't work. I've tried deleting and downloading Minecraft, deleting and downloading Minecraft, etc. Any idea on how to fix? (If you need more information on it I might be able to try to send it.)

Install iOS app in mac without iphone

I want to install an iOS app in my Mac but I don't have an iPhone or iPad. Is there a way to install it using some software?

Apple ID locked and you locked him Out but it is locked now

Original:

How I can help you with! I have my iPhone 11 as old phone I have at home. Went to iCloud.com and use find my iPhone And it reads that pop up: do you want to sign in to iCloud.com with your Apple ID. Anthony bought new phone for him and transferred all data and it was a good phone for texting and calling and it does have cellular data. Long story short: went to appleid.Apple.com to try to sign in to your Apple ID account and it said his Apple ID locked due to password issues and the password is not working and I followed the password reset process at iforgot.Apple.com and it says this message: You will be able to reset your password in 2 days. I will wait for 2 days. Ok then and it's almost 10. Thanks

Codesign: The specified item could not be found in the keychain

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 02:18 PM PDT

I am trying to codesign one VST plugin in Terminal. I added a self-signed certificate to the login keychain. I try to codesign using the following command:

sudo codesign --force --deep --sign Ozone\ 9\ Exciter.vst

However, I get the following error: "error: The specified item could not be found in the keychain"

I even tried to force the identity by adding -s flag with my certficate's Common Name like this:

sudo codesign -s "Nikola Radosevic" --force --deep --sign Ozone\ 9\ Exciter.vst

However, I am still getting the same error

Charging pins stuck in AirPods Pro case

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 01:33 PM PDT

One of my AirPods in my AirPods Pro wasn't charging recently, so I decided to check out the charging pins in the case. I tried fiddling with them using a toothpick attempting to remove any dust in them. However, I overdid it and one of the charging pins is now stuck inside the case as shown in the following image:-

enter image description here (You can see one charging pin is out and the other is stuck inside)

I am unable to remove it by tapping on the back of the case and I've even tried using a magnet to attract it. The AirPods are out of warranty so I'm not really intent on repairing it at an apple store because I'm pretty sure they'll ask me to replace the entire case. What can I do?

Why can't I change the date or time on my MacBook Air?

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 01:40 PM PDT

I'm trying to change the date on my MacBook Air (2020, running MacOS 12.4). When I try to do so I'm met with this screen:

sys pref change time

"Set date and time automatically" is checked and cannot be unchecked, even after I've authenticated. The time zone tab looks like this:

set time zone

When I turn on location services for Date and Time it sets my time correctly, but then after a few minutes or hours that setting magically unchecks itself and I'm back to square one.

How can I fix this and either set my time manually or set my location correctly?

Can I designate a wifi network as "metered network"

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 11:40 AM PDT

On MacOS, is is possible to tell the OS that this is MiFi or shared internet from cell phone and the OS should "save" data as much as possible.

(like Android OS is capable of)

Really old messages appear on OSX Messages app

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 09:33 AM PDT

I heave couple threads from 4-5 years ago that I deleted from my iOS Messages app ( must've deleted at least a few years ago too)

About a couple weeks ago, I synced all SMS/iMessage apps to work with my OSX Messages app too.

Randomly, these two threads just appeared on my OSX App (but not my iPhone one).

Had it been EVERY thread in the last several years...then I'd chalk it to some bug where all cloud msg history just accidentally got synced...but, strange that it's just these two and that it's only on my Mac and not iPhone.

Any ideas? Ty!

TimeCapsule occasionally stuck for hours

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 11:42 AM PDT

Typically, the TimeMachine backups on TimeCapsule are fast and reliable.

But occasionally, the backup is just stuck for hours not backing up the data at all or just 10 MB can take minutes.

  • The connectivity is fine. It's fast and reliable. - There is plenty of space both on Mac and TimeCapsule
  • sudo sysctl debug.lowpri_throttle_enabled=1 didn't help
  • no THROTTLED entries in sudo fs_usage backupd
  • The Mac is doing next to nothing
  • backupd process eats all between 0 and 10 %, peaking at around 30 % of CPU occasionally (the % doesn't seem to influence the actual speed)
  • probably something related to Mac, because it got stuck in 2 TimeMachines
  • TimeCapsule was restarted

It didn't finish just 30 GB backup the whole day. Multiple unsuccessful tries on multiple days. Catalina (last version for Intel)

What else could be wrong?

EDIT: It got stuck on my second TimeCapsule (in different location) as well, so it is probably related to the Mac.

Boot login screen responsive only a second every minute

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 09:54 AM PDT

Description:
Out of nowhere, the boot login/decryption screen started to become unresponsive. Fortunately, the screen is responsive for about a second every minute (or so). This way I can still type in my password at 2 chars / min (*o*) and log in.

Once logged in, everything is fine. Non-boot logging screens are not affected. The same is the case when booting from an older Mac OS via USB. The closest related problem I could find was macOS Sierra boot problem related to Apple SD Card reader driver.

But the described behavior is not a perfect match. However, the last thing I did before the issue appeared was to copy a file onto a SD card I had never connected previously (I always have a built-to-fit SD card connected).

System:

  • Mac OS 11.6.7 (internal, last updated after appearance of bug) & Mac OS 10.15 (external, USB)
  • MacBookAir6,2
  • SSD exchanged for NVMe (not fully supported by hardware)
  • FileVault active

Full list of symptoms:

  • Time between boot sound and apple logo increased from seconds to minutes
  • Duration apple logo is shown also increased from seconds to minutes
  • Boot login screen unresponsive/frozen for about a min at a time
  • Boot login screen responsive for about a second after every unresponsive min
  • Text field caret frozen
  • Trackpad inputs during unresponsive time lead to expected update of the position of the cursor during the responsive second
  • Keyboard inputs only registered during responsive second (major issue as typing a long password then takes forever)

Attempted fixes:

  • Reset SMC
  • Reset PRAM
  • Disabling FileVault
  • Disabling Bluetooth
  • Fix disk in recovery mode (no errors found)
  • Connecting USB keyboard does not help (no power at that stage)

I am looking into possible offending kexts and SD card reader drivers at the moment but as rebooting takes at least 15 min, progress is slow and frustrating...

UPDATE: Rebooting without SD card gives a responsive login screen! So the SD cardreader is indeed the culprit. Now I only need a way to fix it on the sw side...

Do iOS and iPadOS alert you if the certificate of a network you’re joining has changed

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 03:06 PM PDT

So if you joined a network in the past and trusted its certificate while at it, and saved it on your iPhone/iPad.

Sometime later, if either:

  1. It's the same network but their previous certificate has expired and they're now using a new one

or

  1. Your device finds another network with the same SSID, which does not have the same certificate (has no certificate or has a different certificate)

Will your iPhone/iPad alert you or will it quietly join without asking you about anything?

Playing local (on device) music files

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 07:59 AM PDT

I have a sizeable CD collection, all of which I've ripped and converted to MP3. While connected to my home network, I copied many of these files from my Samba NAS share using IOS's built-in files app to the phone itself. I put all the files in a folder I created named "Music". The copy ended with an error message. But all the files appear to be there (and they are consuming space on the device).

Now, how can I play these? If I browse to the folder in the IOS Files app, and tap on an MP3 file, it just hangs. I also tried some 3rd party apps: "Flacbox", "Nota Player", and even good ol' VLC. With VLC, I can't even see how to access the files I copied. Both Flacbox and Nota Player hang when I try to import the files.

FWIW, I am new to IOS, having come from Android. This process was trivial on Android: copy files (no errors), and there was a great simple, free app I used called "Folder Player" expressly for playing local audio media. How can I achieve a similar result on IOS/iPhone?

NFS Mount Permissions on External Drive

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 07:18 AM PDT

I use Vagrant to manage Virtualbox instances and up until a few OS versions ago was able to sync drives from an external drive. (On 12.3.1 now.)

Other vagrant users are also struggling with this, and I'm seeing posts going back to 2013 that address NFS on OS X, some of which mention the /etc/fstab (File System Tab), which apparently doesn't exist by default doesn't seem to have a lot of Apple-specific documentation. Here's a (Linux) reference on How-To-Geek.

NOTE: I have added NFSD (and iTerm) to Full Disc Access in System Preferences > Security & Privacy.

An example of an OS X/macOS ftab file on github states:

# You can find the volume UUID in Disk Utility. Select the volume on the left # and then File->Get Info. See "Universal Unique Identifier". # # Options used below: # ro for readonly (can be omitted) # noauto to prevent auto-mount # noatime to skip writing last access times (performance thing, optional) # # Remember to set the filesystem type (hfs, ntfs, etc) too

There's also a comment mentioning a utility, vifs, specifically for editing the ftab file ($ sudo vifs). In my case this results in a warning:

Warning - this file should only be modified with vifs(8)

(What does the (8) mean?)

Between Disk Utility (for reference) and this terminal command: diskutil info -all |grep -e "Device Node" -e "Proto" -e "UUID" -e "Mount Point" -e "Type", I have:

Device Node: /dev/disk3s1 Volume Name: Oggun Mount Point: /Volumes/Oggun Type (Bundle): hfs Protocol: USB Volume UUID: C9AEED83-EB14-3C9F-97D5-D95A0252F9EF

Guessing that I need to add a line along the lines of:

# DRIVE with DIRECTORY to MOUNT via NFS UUID=0C9AEED83-EB14-3C9F-97D5-D95A0252F9EF /Volumes/Oggun hfs rw,auto

I think the third column, contains the "type" of drive.

Hoping someone more informed than me will be inspired to share with some real insight.

Voice memo only saving part of audio

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 11:02 AM PDT

I recently conducted a 1h30 interview using voice memo, but when trying to save the file the app froze and did not allow me to press any button. It showed that the interview was 1h30 long, though. I had to close the app, because it was completely frozen for 30 min, and it did only save 17 min of the audio. It was a very important interview, and I was hoping that there was a way I could recover the complete file. I later tested again, with another interview, an the same thing happened - an 1h long interview was reduced to 14 min.

I have already tried using recovery data software but none of them work (they are not even able to scan my phone).

Any help would be much appreciated!

Mac Mini mid 2011 - any way to keep the analog audio input out of power saving mode?

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 07:05 AM PDT

This machine (mid-2011 with 10.16 retrofit) is used as a HTPC/media player in a somewhat interference-rich environment.

As long as there is some kind of media playback active, even if it is video with a silent audio track, all is fine. However, a few seconds after no longer playing back anything, it appears the sound circuitry powers down leaving the output in a somewhat high-impedance state, leading to all kinds of noise being picked up by the analog wiring (ticking noises that appear to be from some SMPS in the system if not using an audio isolation transformer, hum injected into the same transformer if using one). Is there some hidden software option to simply keep the sound circuitry on line (actively outputting silence) at all times?

YouTube video quality

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 08:01 AM PDT

I have an iPhone 13 Pro that I just purchased.

Whenever I load a YouTube video in my browser, whether that is using Chrome or Safari, every video I come across is automatically played in 320p quality by default. Using the cog icon I can change the quality to a maximum of 720p, there is no option for higher quality. However, on other devices watching the same YouTube video I can watch in 1080p, 4K, and 8K quality.

The App Store YouTube app does not appear to have this problem, however it is annoying having to use a separate app instead of the browser.

No other phone or device in my house has this problem, and I have checked the speed of my fibre internet.

Update to clarify question - How to get higher than 720p YouTube video quality when using Chrome or Safari web browsers. Especially when many videos outright refuse to load in 720p.

How do you get rid of the notification to login to iCloud in Software Preferences?

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 04:03 PM PDT

If you want to login to MacOS to be able to get apps for example, but don't want (or can't due to corporate firewall, etc) to login to Icloud, how do you disable the red notification in system center?

Why is it difficult to drag with the Magic Trackpad 2?

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 09:08 AM PDT

I am using a Magic Trackpad 2. I do a lot of design, so I have to drag and move items several hours a day. I click with my right thumb near the bottom of the Trackpad, and I drag with my index finger. The trackpad is very close to the laptop, less than 8 inches away on the same table as the laptop, the battery is fully charged every day.

But the trackpad doesn't behave in a consistent way. Sometimes, when I want to click an object and drag it, the trackpad thinks I am scaling in or out, and scales the view on my page. So I have to undo the last action, and try again.

Other times, I click on an object and try to drag it, but nothing happens, my index finger just swipes the trackpad without anything moving on the screen.

And other times, the trackpad doesn't click when I press down on it, no matter how hard I press down.

I have been using trackpads for 20 years and it's the first time I find one so approximative and unreliable.

I am extremely annoyed and disappointed by this erratic behavior - I think it was much easier back when trackpads had a clickable bar, and a non-clickable dragging area. It makes me lose time and confuses me several dozen times a day.

Are there ways to make sure the trackpad understands what I am trying to do without getting confused?

Booting from a cloned Windows 10 installation

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 01:29 PM PDT

I have Windows 10 Pro installed on a external flash drive, I tried to install Windows via bootcamp but it is required to have more free space. I succeeded to install Windows 10 with VirtualBox on a SanDisk 32 gb flash drive and boot into Windows 10. The drive capacity is too small so I bought a Kingston Kyson 64 gb USB 3.2 flash drive, but it will not work with Bootcamp.

If I fresh install Windows with VirtualBox, the installation process will stop around 40% and reboot to EFI interactive shell.

If I clone SanDisk > Kingston from another Bootcamp machine, the clone drive will boot to Windows loading screen followed by BSOD.

If I clone SanDisk > Kingston from the booted Windows 10 drive, the clone drive will boot to Windows loading screen followed by Startup blue screen.

If I clone sector-by-sector, the clone drive will boot with BSOD 0xc0000225, 0xc000000e, Missing / Damaged Winload.efi.

How to return a captive portal page; e.g. Starbucks \ McDonald's WiFi landing page?

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 04:43 PM PDT

Normally, Safari provides a pop-up window for the public Wi-Fi's landing page: requesting the user to agree to TOS (Terms of Service).

Attempts to login to Wi-Fi were not successful because of the absence of the landing page:

  • ifconfig revealed an IP address (172.31.99.185) was assigned to the laptop's Wi-Fi adapter
  • attempts to ping 172.31.99.1 failed
  • browsing to http://172.31.99.1/ failed
  • browsing to http://www.google.com/ failed

Is there a Safari menu item or process that will call the TOS pop-up?

iPad doesn't display the captive portal login window after connecting to a WiFi network

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 04:31 PM PDT

I use a WiFi network that requires users to first go through a captive portal login window after joining the WiFi network. It works fine on my Android phone, but on my iPad no captive portal login window appears, and as a result I cannot use the WiFi network. What could the issue be?

Trying to reinstall macOS on a 2009 MacBook Pro

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 01:18 PM PDT

My dad gave me his old 2009 MacBook Pro yesterday. It was slow and clunky so I reformatted the drive. Now I'm trying to reinstall macOS through OS X utilities. It asks me to agree to Yosemite terms and conditions, and when inputting my or my dad's Apple ID and password it says the product is temporarily unavailable.

I tried creating a bootable USB for macOS Sierra from the Mac desktop we have in the house, however when booting from the USB the screen gives me a circle with a cross in it.

I believe I may have to purchase Yosemite for my profile before it will work, but I cannot find the item in the App Store.

If I buy Snow Leopard instead, will I be able to install it from the utilities? At the moment it tries to install Yosemite.

"Evernote Premium" text is hovering on my screen, despite Evernote app being closed

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 02:05 PM PDT

I have some text hovering over my screen, in all my spaces, for at least the past 2 weeks. I cannot recall when this started. And, unfortunately, I do not know how to replicate it.

Several attempts to contact Evernote for support have been fruitless.

This is what the text looks like :

This text is there whether I'm in a terminal window, running a VM through VMWare, or watching a movie!

I have uninstalled and quit Evernote, but I'm beginning to think this is not a problem of Evernote.

Exploring the files in a MobileSync backup

Posted: 01 Jul 2022 01:27 PM PDT

I'm trying to find if some movies that I had on my iPhone 5 might be hidden away in a MobileSync backup. The weird part is that iTunes → Preferences → Devices doesn't show a backup for this device in February, but there's a folder in the MobileSync backup folder that shows a Feb 10, 2013 last modified date.

What I'd like to do is find out what all is in that folder without having to restore a device. Honestly, I'm not sure how to do the restore anyway, since there's no entry in iTunes for it.

Is there any way to browse what is in each backup?
