Can't type tilde on iterm2

I try to type the left option key and n for typing ~ on my iterm2 but it doesn't work. When I do the same with the right Option key I can type a ~. After it I can type ~ with the left Option key until I have press the spacebar.

I'm total confused and have no idea why it's not working :/

Folders disappearing from search result list after consulting them

We have a customer that is experiencing a strange behavior when he searches folders on his MacBook (Catalina 10.15.7, i7 2.2Ghz, 16GB Ram).

For example :

  • he searches for "2022-D00170" which returns a list of two folders and four files
  • he double clicks on the first folder named exactly 2022-D00170 and sees the files within, in the same Finder window
  • he then clicks on the back arrow of the Finder window to get back to the search results
  • the folder he went in is no longer in the results list, only one folder and four files show up
  • he does the same with the other folder and when getting back to the search results it is also gone
  • he then opens one of the four files, a PDF that opens with Adobe Reader
  • the PDF file also disppears from the Finder search results

If we close the Finder search and reopen a new Finder window, do the same search for "2022-D00170" we only get the remaining three files, the two folders and the PDF are gone from the results...

We forced quit (Relaunch) the Finder application, same result. Only rebooting the Mac will reset the search and the behavior starts again after the user searches again.

We did not reset Spotlight yet as it seems the files and folders are indexed correctly.

Anyone has an idea of what is going on and a fix or a workaround we could try? We do not want to have the user reboot his MacBook each time he needs to search for documents...

Is it possible to whitelist a specific url on iOS? (not just the entire domain)

I'd like to block all websites except certain URLs. For example, I want to only allow any url with the pattern reddit.com/r/math/*, but otherwise block the rest of reddit.com. Is this possible on iOS without jailbreaking? It appears screen time only lets you block the entire domain.

Good day, I am using Ubuntu often and it has l2tp newtwork manager, which allows me to connect via certain VPN. However, I use Mac more often and I want to set up the same mechanism and use VPN here.

Unfortunately, when I was setting VPN via Settings -> Network, there was no such option (Phase Algorithm) neither in Authentication settings nor in Advanced. Is there any way to set VPN without any other software, just using mac's VPN? Right now it doesn't work and I suppose that's due to the absence of the algorithms.

How to make ' and < map to the right keys (force change from ANSI to ISO)?

My separate keyboard (a Das Keyboard 4 Ultimate with ISO layout) has, to my annoyance, a different keyboard mapping than the MacBook's built-in. The difference is the ' and < keys. The built in laptop keyboard is like so (Norwegian locale, ISO layout):

While the separate keyboard behaves like so (ANSI layout):

This is not the correct layout. E.g. the Enter/Return button is wrong (1 row). It should be like this (again ISO layout):

Note that the Enter/Return button is 2 rows high here.

Unfortunately, the Mac setup does not fully recognise the keyboard:

Finally, on the Keyboard Setup Assistant intro screen, it is stated "Your Logitech device cannot be identified and will not be usable until it is identified" (Emphasis mine). While I have a Logitech mouse, the keyboard is, as described, from another manufacturer. I have never attached a Logitech keyboard to the computer.

USB keyboard detected but not working at all on MacBook Pro BigSur

I use a MacBook Pro 15" 2019 (running BigSur 11.6.5) supplied by my employer as well as a personal linux PC, switching between them with a KVM.

I've been using my USB keyboard (Fnatic Gear RUSH Red Silent) for nearly three years without issue on both systems, but 2 days ago the Mac has completely stopped working with the keyboard and I can't understand why:

  • typing any key on the keyboard has no effect at all, including all letters, numbers, modifiers, arrows etc
  • the keyboard is recognised by MacOS and shown in the Keyboard control panel (clicking on "Modifier keys" shows a dropdown selection for connected keyboards, including mine). It's definitely not a connection issue or a device issue, as it's clearly recognised as a keyboard
  • if I click the "Change keyboard type" button, the standard dialog asks me to press the key to the right of the left Shift key (as I did when I first connected the keyboard years ago), but now when I press the key, nothing happens
  • the keyboard works fine on other machines
  • I have to enter a boot password as the disk is encrypted; at this password prompt, the USB keyboard works fine. It stops working once the OS is loaded
  • I have tried direct connection (with a USB A to C adapter of course) to all 4 ports, as well as the connection I normally used which was never an issue before (through a USB dock and then the KVM which is effectively a USB hub)
  • I have tried disconnecting everything else and connecting only the keyboard, and it still didn't work
  • another USB keyboard connected in any way (direct through the same USB A->C adapter or via dock+KVM) works fine. It's a crappy dome keyboard and I would like to use my nice mechanical keyboard instead.
  • I have reset the SMC and NVRAM
  • I have culled basically any files that match ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.keyb and rebooted
  • the keyboard is still not recognised, even in Safe Mode
  • I normally use UK PC layout (not UK Mac). I have tried various layouts and they make no difference
  • I cannot and will not update to Monterey at this stage, because a) my employer doesn't fully support it yet, and b) this setup worked fine on BigSur until 2 days ago. I don't want to upgrade with everything that entails, on the remote chance that it might magically help (there's no reason at all why it should)
  • BONUS POINTS: the RUSH keyboard has a built-in USB hub. The other USB keyboard works fine through this USB hub, but keypresses on the RUSH still do nothing

I suspect this may have something to do with "mapping" keys to keycodes or something like that. As detailed above, I have tried setting different keyboard layouts but it's made no difference.

I have tried contacting Apple Support who couldn't solve the issue. If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate the help.

How to confirm alert box of specific terminal window id?

I am starting a new terminal window from a terminal:

osascript -e 'tell app "Terminal" to do script "myProgram.sh"'

Since the new process is not ending(it is basically a server), I want to be able to stop it at some point using AppleScript.

I was thinking of the best solution to just kill the process by id, but I have multiple instances of the program started(it is a node.js server) and I cannot differentiate them by name, therefore I cannot get the PID of the correct process instance using ps -ef.

If I do:

osascript -e 'tell app "Terminal" to close window id {windowId}'

I am getting the alert box "Do you want to terminate running process...?".

  1. Is it possible to get PID of terminal window id(I cannot execute any commands(like echo $$) inside the terminal window as there is a running process)?

  2. If not 1., is it possible to force close the window id?

  3. If not 2., how can I confirm this alert box using AppleScript?

Owner and group of an hdiutil attached disk image

It's known that a disk image attached with ignored owners (vsdbutil -c prints disabled) will have owner and group to match whatever user is accessing the disk.

However, the following bit from diskutil's man says it may behave differently:

The behavior is different when disk images are attached. With disk images, the owner of all files in a filesystem mount for which owners are ignored is the user attaching the disk image. The attaching owner is also used when creating new files.

I cannot replicate this. Despite the attaching user, owner and group are always set to match whomever is accessing disk's files.

Unable to charge iPad Pro 2018 from MacBook Pro

I have been connecting my iPad Pro to my MacBook Pro for years to enable sidecar and at the same time charge it. Suddenly it will not charge anymore. Not sure if it happened after an upgrade to either iOS og macOS. Charging the iPad using a power adapter works fine.

I also have a one-year old iPad Air that is charging without problems from the usb-c port on the Mac using the same cable.

Does anyone know if this is a known issue or if there is anything I can do to fix it?

Is there a file manager iPad app for the sole purpose of enabling USB transfers to MacBooks?

I'm using macOS Monterey 12.3.1 and iPadOS 15.4.1. iTunes has been deprecated. My files are locally on the "On my iPad" section in the Files app

After the "Trust MacBook" step on the iPad, I can navigate to the iPad from Finder as described in the help article.

However, I can't access the "On My iPad" section. I can only see the files listed under Chrome or other apps.

I don't have enough space on iCloud for this set of files and AirDrop would be too slow. It appears that the only way is to use a third party app into which I copy the "On My iPad" files, and then they will be visible in Finder:

Does the single quote on iOS have different value than on MacOS?

I notice that any of my passwords that has single quotes (') aren't accepted on some websites if I type it on Safari. If I use my Mac and Chrome for the same websites, they're accepted. Have anyone experienced this?

Mac OS 12.3+ /usr/bin/python requirement

As of macOS 12.3, Apple no longer ships Python 2

However, I am trying to install a program (.pkg installer) that depends on /usr/bin/python and it fails. In /var/log/install.log I see this error:

/usr/bin/python: bad interpreter: No such file or directory

I've already installed Python 2.7 on my system, but the root directory is now read-only so I can't symlink to /usr/bin/python. Disabling SIP does not work. I know there are workarounds for mounting the root system as writable, but that seems like a lot of work given that I need this for a one-time install.

So my question is, is there any other way that I can make the Python binary accessible to the installer via /usr/bin/python?

iOS Simulator gives 'You dont have permission error'

I am currently on macOS Monterey 12.2 and have started an iPhone 12 iOS 15.0 simulator. On this simulator, if I drop files from desktop or a folder inside desktop, I get an error saying, 'The file could not be opened because you don't have the permission to view it'.

However, if this files is moved to some folder inside ~/Builds/SampleFiles/*, the drag and drop copies the files to the simulator. Is something specific needed to be done to provide such an access to the simulator ? I can see that Simulator has 'Full Disk Access' under 'Security and Privacy'.

How does one find their DUID for IPv6 on MacOS?

I recently was setting up IPv6 on my home network and while setting up several nodes noticed that the DHCPv6 server was using these DUID strings to identify clients as it assigned IPv6 IPs to the various hosts.

NOTE: DUID is the following:

The DHCP unique identifier (DUID) is used by a client to get an IP address from a DHCPv6 server. It has a 2-byte DUID type field, and a variable-length identifier field up to 128 bytes. Its actual length depends on its type. The server compares the DUID with its database and delivers configuration data (address, lease times, DNS servers, etc.) to the client.

Where can I find this on the client side via the CLI on MacOS?

How to use 2 different iCloud accounts in Reminders app on iOS and macOS?

I use one iCloud account for my private use (mainly on my phone) and one for work (on my Macbook Pro with Monterey). I however want to use Reminders to use both accounts, so I could see all my working reminders on my private phone and all my private reminders on my working computer. I've already done the same for Calendar but for reminders it seems different. On my Internet Accounts settings page there is no Reminders. enter image description here

Am I missing something? Is there a way I can use 2 iCloud accounts in the Reminders?

How can I make my Mac automatically switch to a new speaker when it is connected, and back to my internal speakers after it's disconnected?

For some reason, when I connect my Sony Bluetooth speaker to my Mac, my Mac usually does not automatically set this Bluetooth speaker as my audio output device. Audio continues playing from my internal speakers until I manually click the audio icon in the menu bar and set "SRS-XB12" as my output device.

Furthermore, when I disconnect this speaker, my Mac sets the audio output device to my USB Microphone, rather than back to my internal speakers.

When I connect my Bluetooth speaker, I want my Mac to automatically start playing audio from that speaker. When I disconnect my speaker, I want it to play audio from the internal speakers. How can I make that happen?

Trying to Run Windows 10 on Flashed Mac Pro 4, 1 now 5, 1 Bootable USB Storage Error Bootcamp

I want to run Windows 10 on my flashed 2009 Mac Pro 5, 1 with Bootcamp.

Currently OS X 10.11.6 and the Nvidia GT 120 are present.

I am able to start the process to create the bootable USB drive but every time the progress bar stops midway and says that there is not enough space on my USB drive. The USB is 123GB and completely cleared. The Windows 10 ISO is around 6GB. I have also tried reformatting it to FAT32 and exFAT, with no luck. I have also disabled Time Machine and automatic backups.

Does anyone know a fix to this or should I just install Windows 10 via DVD?

Books on Mac won't download epubs from iCloud

I use Books on Mac (Big Sur) to organize my non-Apple epub library. Books successfully syncs across devices, and when I want to read a book on my Mac, I often need to click the cloud download button in the top right corner of the book cover to download the book.

At some point recently, downloading stopped working on Mac (only). When I click the button, the title is added to the 'download manager' ("Show Downloads" next to the "All Books" link), however the progress indicator spins endlessly and the books are not downloaded.

I have 15GB free on my 512GB disk, running Big Sur 11.2.3 on a Macbook Pro 2017.

Any idea why this might be happening and what I can do about it?

How do I update macOS App Store apps to the latest compatible version?

I have rather belatedly (March 2021) updated my macBook to Mojave. Because I depend on Aperture and other 32-bit apps I can't update to Catalina.

brew doctor tells me:

Warning: Your Xcode (10.1) is too outdated.  Please update to Xcode 11.3.1 (or delete it).  Xcode can be updated from the App Store.

But unfortunately trying to update Xcode or other out-of-date apps, including iMovie, using the App store:

  • The Updates tab (⌘7) says "No Updates. All your apps are up to date".
  • When I go to page for Xcode and click "update", it tells me "We could not complete your update. Xcode can't be installed on "Macintosh HD" because macOS version 10.15.4 or later is required." I get similar messages for iMovie.
  • The profile tab (⌘0) shows both Xcode and iMovie in the list of purchases, but the buttons next to each just say "Open".

    • Sometimes, if I wait a while, the button next to Xcode (but not iMovie) will change to say "update", and when I click on it I get a dialog that says "Download an older version of Xcode? The current version requires OS X 10.15.4 or later, but you can download the last compatible version"—but when I click "Download" the same dialog reappears again immediately.

Xcode 12.3 is not responding a few seconds after opening it

I updated to Xcode 12.3 on my MacBook Pro 2018 13" yesterday and face a strange problem right now.

Problem: Every time I open up Xcode, it will first work fine. However, after a few actions / seconds, the screen freezes and the circle loading indicator is displayed. The app does not respond anymore and I have to force close it.

More Information:

  • The freezing is Xcode specific. I can use all other Programs while Xcode is frozen and the circle is spinning. It doesn't seem like a resource problem.

  • This not only happens with existing projects. I created a new one and encountered the same Problem.

  • I alredy reinstalled Xcode, but that does not solve the problem.

  • I already deleted the ~/Library/Developer Folder (like a few other posts recommended) and installed the components on Xcode start again. Still the same problem.

Has anyone an idea on how to solve this problem?

Adding external wired NAS to Time Capsule

First, I have none of this equipment, so I can't just test it and see ..Yet. I Know I could hack a Time Capsule into a RaidBox via SATA/eSATA connector, But that's not the route I'd like to go.

If you plug in a NAS to a A1470 TC does acknowledge it's existence ? And Can you store to it? I want to get a TC A1470. replace the small drive with a larger TB unit. Use that for my Time Machine Backups. Then add a 16TB NAS (wired) to the ethernet on the TC. Like a Drobo 5-Bay DAS Storage.

Connect another mac as secondary display

I have two macbooks:

  • MacBook Pro 2012
  • MacBook Pro 2017 with touchbar

Recently I've got an idea to use 2012 as a secondary display. I don't completely understand whether it's possible or not, the only info I found on this is https://www.macobserver.com/tips/how-to/imac-secondary-display/ It's said that this is possible if your second mac has thunderbolt or mini display ports. My 2012 does have it (mini display port). So let's consider it's possible.

It's said I need mini display to usb-c adapter. It's ok but not quite cheap. So finally we reached my question. I already have minidisplay to hdmi adapter. Now I'm wondering is it going to work if I purchase usb-c to hdmi adapter (since it's twice cheaper) and try to connect both adapters to each other?

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15 inches, mid-2015) with a 2.8 GHz Intel quad core i7 processor, now running macOS Catalina 10.15.3.

Before the upgrade, I could do a search as follows. Press ⌘ + F to open a Finder window; select what I want to search (this Mac, recent files, etc); press the Plus Sign to add criteria (such as extension, title, type of file, etc). After the upgrade, there is no Plus Sign. All I can do is search all occurrences of whatever I type.

How do I add search criteria like I did before?

How to increase / decrease a priority of a macOS process?

I'm looking for a way to throttle up a macOS application or a process, specifically photoanalysisd. Ideally a Terminal command that would enable it to use all resources to the point, where any other app opened would slow down to a crawl.

Is that at all possible?

Slow read/write speed (40MBps) with USB-C external SSD on Macbook Pro

I had a Sandisk Extreme Pro 500Gb PCIe NVME M.2 SSD. I got an USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 Enclosure for it. I have tried it on 3 different 2017 and 2018 macbook pros and an iMac. The Max read/write speed that I can get is 40MBps. I thought the problem might be with the enclosure so I tried 4 different enclosures and still same result. I installed the SSD through PCIe to a desktop and read/write speed were astonishingly high.

I got a Samsung T5 External SSD and even with one I have the same problem. I have seen many reviews of T5 on youtube with Mac which all were satisfied. Am I missing something? Do I need some sort of Driver for it? I'm running a 2018 Macbook Pro with MacOS Mojave

Prevent iCloud Drive from removing specific folders

I'd like to use iCloud Drive to sync my documents + desktop.

However, many times it will remove projects while I'm still working on them (even small ones, like 10MB).

Is there some sort of flag that will tell macOS to sync a folder, but never remove it until I say so?

Mind that I wouldn't like to not sync a certain folder, I'd like to keep macOS from removing it to create purgeable space.

Why don't my arrow keys work in vim under iTerm?

They work just fine if I use Terminal and start a vim session, but under iTerm I have to resort to using H-J-K-L to do left-up-down-right movement.

In both Terminal and iTerm TERM=xterm-color. My .vimrc is quite lean and there are no key bindings set in there that would causing this problem.
