How can I sync my Google Drive to my external hard drive without using the Google Drive app? It's incredibly buggy and keeps crashing.

Add iCloud account to Outlook calenders on iOS

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 06:26 AM PDT

I want to add my iCloud account to my outlook calendar on my iPhone 13 (software version 15.2). Note: My iCloud account is not registered via an @icloud.com mail address. I created an app-specific password for outlook but it still isn't working. Outlook still says that it needs an app-specific password even though I already created one.

Is there a way to disable the lock in System Preferences? [duplicate]

Simply put, I don't want to enter my password to unlock the padlock every time I need to make a change in the protected system settings.

While running macOS, randomly switches to Bootcamp [closed]

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 04:22 AM PDT

I have an Intel Macbook Pro with Windows 10 dual boot. It will randomly show the Windows loading animation (black screen with spinner) and try to start into Windows, which fails because something is broke.

Really wierd.

How to disable Microsoft AutoUpdate on macOS? [duplicate]

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 04:40 AM PDT

The Microsoft Autoupdate app pop-up is launching very frequently on my Mac and it's very annoying. There's no option to turn it off in the menu. I've searched up the web and this forum, but the only solution they suggest is to plainly remove the app from the computer. I don't want to use this method because I want to be able to sometimes manually look for updates using this tool. Microsoft AutoUpdate pop-up window

How to access special key symbols on Magic Keyboard UK layout used with Windows 10

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 08:38 AM PDT

I am using the Apple Magic Keyboard version for the UK using a Dell laptop running Windows 10. I am having the following struggles,

i) I cant seem to access the # (which is part of the key for 3 and which also has the £ symbol above it.) The # seems to be a third symbol available on the key but I cant seem to access it. I dont know what combination of keystrokes would acccess this special character.

ii) I have the same problem as i) above but for the symbol which is on the 2 key which has the @ symbol above it.

iii) On the 2 key there is the @ symbol above it but it's not correctly mapped. When I select it I get the " instead. The " and the @ seem to be the assigned the wrong way round on my system. How do I correct this please ?

Not sure if it's a good idea to represent 3 problems on the one post or if I should create 3 separate posts - one for each issue - its just they all seem closely related.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Install macOS Monterey.app does not appear to be a valid OS installer application

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 04:09 AM PDT

I tried to follow the existing guides explaining how to make a bootable install USB drive for OSX Monterey. However after downloading Monterey, formatting the USB, and running the following as root:

/Applications/Install\ macOS\ Monterey.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled/

I receive this error:

/Applications/Install macOS Monterey.app does not appear to be a valid OS installer application.

-- Other Notes --

  • I also tried running the installer all the way until the end, yet it still gave the same error
  • USB stick is formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and has 30+GB of space
  • My MacBook Pro has M1 chipset

Debugging phantom zsh process

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 02:32 AM PDT

Every once in a while (once a week?) I noticed that my mac's fans are spinning full speed. When I investigate my processes on activity monitor I notice a zsh process consuming near 100% on the cpu. Shutting down this process fixes the issue, as it doesn't go away on it own. The fans also continue to spin full power when close the lid.

I'm trying to track the source of this process and hopefully fix the issue. The zsh process's parent is launchd (PID 1). I've tried to find a matching daemons and agents file but nothing jumps out at me. Similarly I tired looking at the open file and ports to get an idea of what the process is doing but didn't lead to any insights.

I'm running macOS 10.14.6 on a 2015 Macbook Pro. My default shell is zsh despite the default being bash in Mojave. I suspect the issue is that something that is supposed to launch using bash launches with zsh and gets confused, but that's just a hunch.

I know this isn't a lot to go on hence this question has two possible goals:

  • figure out the cause/fix of this specific runaway process
  • recommend general tools for tracking and debugging such processes (so that I can figure it out/post more information here)

Sed command to replace values on custom lines

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 01:28 AM PDT

I'm trying to replace custom values in a configuration file using sed, but the changes should be applied for specific indexes of lines (e.g. first two lines only, line 3, etc).

For now, using this command will replace all of the matching values with the desired one:

sed -i"" -e "/PRODUCT_BUNDLE_IDENTIFIER =/ s/= .*/= ${BUNDLE_IDENTIFIER};/" ${CONFIG_FILE}

Here is how my file looks like:

**** more config **** **** more config **** PRODUCT_BUNDLE_IDENTIFIER = <to_be_replaced>; **** more config **** PRODUCT_BUNDLE_IDENTIFIER = <to_be_replaced>; PRODUCT_BUNDLE_IDENTIFIER = com.bash.sed.test; PRODUCT_BUNDLE_IDENTIFIER = com.bash.sed.test; **** more config **** **** config **** PRODUCT_BUNDLE_IDENTIFIER = com.bash.sed.test; **** config ****

I've tried adding /g2 line GNU sed, but this won't work on. Any ideas or workaround to do this using bash would help me a lot.

Thanks!

Create a shortcut for opening file paths

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 06:52 AM PDT

in my office we're using Dropbox as our file server and we're sending a lot of file paths all the time. I'm looking for a way to speed this up.

I know how to change the shortcut cmd + option + c so that it copies a relative file path instead of an absolute path. Now, I would like to create a keyboard shortcut, that works in every application, to open the path. I would like to be able to highlight a text (i.e. the path), and then the shortcut opens the finder, opens the go-to-window, pastes the path in there and opens the path.

Is there a way to automate this process? It is very important, though, that this works in every application that we use (Outlook, MS Teams, Signal for Mac...)

VLC suddenly not working correctly in Catalina

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 12:03 AM PDT

I dont know what happened but all of a sudden, VLC no longer properly works properly for me. While videos do play, they take anywhere from 60seconds to 5 minutes to load and freeze the entire app to the point while loading where if I change my mind, VLC must be Force Quit to close. Playlists do not run properly and you cannot change from screen to playlist without causing the app to seize up on MacOS. Additionally shifting to and from VLC can cause the entire app to lag and freeze.

I've tried DOZENS of files to test if there was a file corruption and they all load eventually but play flawlessly in QT. I have deleted org.videolan.vlc from my ~/Library several times, changed the file cache from 1000 to 60,000 and uninstalled and reinstalled VLC about 3 times but it's the same every time. Nothing seems to work and these suggestions are the only things I can find through search engines on how to fix this problem. I deleted all app data on uninstall and reinstall. I was told that doing these things would cause the program to reset and play normally. It did not and I have run out of ideas.

I just need help with the steps utilizing this application now. I dont know what else to do to fix VLC on my MacOS Catalina. I've run out of options on Google, they all keep suggesting I do the things I listed above. I'm out of ideas. I dont know where else to go. Please help? I'm getting desperate.

Find out which process creates a file/directory [duplicate]

Posted: 04 Apr 2022 11:53 PM PDT

There's a file and a directory that gets created semi-randomly and I'm struggling to find out which process is creating it. After deleting the file, it will get recreated later (more details about that below, but this question is supposed to be a generic question that also covers related questions).

Using lsof doesn't help, as the file is not open any more. What's needed is something that is able to observe a directory and tell me when a specific file is created, and by which process (this last part is very important!).

In my particular case, it's an Xcode project where some script is generating an empty file and an empty directory. The project is huge and all my attempts at narrow down the culprit were fruitless. The file and directory always have the same name. I need to observe which process is creating them to find out why they're created.

Preview changing default fullscreen view option to continuous scroll

Posted: 04 Apr 2022 11:23 PM PDT

I would like to open preview windows in full screen and I would like to see them in continuous scroll mode as default. I already changed opening for the first time to continuous scroll it works for small preview windows but when I go to full screen mode, it becomes 2 page view which is frustrating and every time I have to do cmd+1.

Is there any solution for this?

Is iPhone headphones sound warning legit when plugged into external speaker?

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 07:04 AM PDT

I plugged my iPhone SE into an amplifier and turned the iPhone's volume to maximum to get the best sound-to-noise ratio.

The health app says that my noise exposure was "Loud".

Did the health app measure the actual sound level or was it basing its warning only on the volume level?

How do I select the url bar with a keyboard shortcut?

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 12:32 AM PDT

On Big Sur and every previous version of macOS, I used Command + L to select the address bar in Safari. I actually do this quite frequently and on Monterey, it doesn't work. This is frustrating me way more than it probably should. Does it work for other people? Is there any work-around? I've tried searching through the menus and I can't find anything to assign a shortcut to that will do the same thing.

Organizing "Sent" mail

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 03:01 AM PDT

Operating system: macOS Monterey version 12.0.1.

In Apple Mail, I use Smart Mailboxes to organize incoming mail. I'd like to better organize Sent mail. Does any means exist within Apple Mail to organize Sent mail by directing sent mail into specific folders?

If possible, how do I do it?

Alternatively, does mail have any other capacity (such as Numbers ability or organize data by category) to address the issue.

How to sync Podcast playing across devices (iPhone, iPad, Mac)?

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 12:04 AM PDT

I've got an iPhone 11 running the latest iOS (15.1)

I've also got a MacBook Pro running Monterrey (12.0.1)

How can I sync Apple Podcasts across devices? I'd like to be able to listen on either device, and have the other know where I left off

Is this possible?

I've followed the directions here: https://support.apple.com/guide/podcasts/listen-to-podcasts-on-all-your-devices-pod5c911347/mac

Yet the library and current playback don't seem to follow that setting

Continuity doesn't seem to work for me, either (bringing my iPhone alongside my MPB and starting Podcasts from the iPhone-badged icon in my Dock)

How to delete burst photos stuck in Recently Deleted folder?

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 02:02 AM PDT

I have a known bug (outlined here, here, here, here, and here) where burst photos won't delete.

I suspect instructions here would help, except my problem is more complicated since the bursts are not in Photos, but in 'Recently Deleted'.

Also, I have Emptied 'Recently Deleted' many times, so the files are still there, but they appear blank, so I cannot tell which of the 25000 files are bursts (there are 17 sets of bursts among the 25000 files).

Attempts to 'Delete' the files from 'Recently Deleted' results in them simply reappearing after exiting and reentering 'Recently Deleted'. Attempts to restore them results in blank files going back into Photos, with no way of distinguishing the bursts from the regular photos.

Ensure emptying 'Recently Deleted' succeeds?

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 08:07 AM PDT

I have deleted ~25,000 photos and videos from iPhone. They're now in 'Recently Deleted', and I want them permanently gone so I can transfer the remaining contents of the iPhone to a new iPhone.

When I click 'Empty' from settings, it takes some time, but the photos don't go anywhere, and the storage level of the iPhone doesn't indicate deletion.

How can I be sure 'Recently Deleted' is emptied properly?

How to prevent Macbook from bluetooth reconnecting to lost connections?

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 05:06 AM PDT

I have an Macbook Pro mid-2017 and a pair of Bluetooth ear-buds.

When I turn bluetooth off and on again on the Macbook, the ear-buds do not reconnect automatically, but when I just put the ear-buds in its case, so they turn off and I take them out again, they reconnect automatically.

When I get home and take the ear-buds out they still do reconnect, but when I take them out on the next morning, they don't.

It seems like there is an timeout or something for "lost Bluetooth connections".

I already tried this command:

sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist DontPageAudioDevices 1

Like I described it works, when I turn Bluetooth off and on again, but not when I only turn the ear-buds off.

Find and delete duplicate mails in Apple Mail (Big Sur/M1)

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 09:03 AM PDT

How can I find and delete duplicate mails in Apple Mail (on Big Sur/M1)? Is there a (free) app or a script for that?

Problem was discussed here long ago: remove duplicate emails. However, the Araxis App and the bohemianboomer-link mentioned there, are not available anymore.

Also JollyRoger's free Remove Duplicate Messages AppleScript (Direct Download Link), which worked fine with Apple Mail on macOS Mojave, does not seem to work with Apple Mail on Big Sur (on my M1 MacBook Air at least).

Installing Ubuntu 20.04 on external drive with iMac running macOS + Windows 10

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 01:01 AM PDT

I have a late 2012 iMac running macOS High Sierra (10.13.6) and Windows 10 (Build 18362) through Bootcamp in legacy BIOS mode and I'd like to do a full install of Ubuntu 20.04 to this external drive and be able to boot it from the iMac when it's plugged in. I've seen guides that address installing Ubuntu either to a Mac + Windows system or to an external drive but not both at the same time. My guess is that the process is similar to this guide but if it's not, how would I go about doing this?

Sharing MacBook internet to iPad via USB

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 07:03 AM PDT

I was sharing my MacBook LAN connection to my iPad using the internet sharing feature. But after the most recent update, I cannot find the iPad USB and iPhone USB option to share the internet. How do I fix this problem?

Disk full; Terminal in Recovery mode won’t delete files; boot kernel panics

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 09:00 AM PDT

I'm in a pickle here. macOS Mojave, just updated the other day. I managed to fill my disk up while creating a .dmg, and the system froze. I rebooted. Kernel panic.

Boot to Recovery mode. Mount the disk. Open Terminal.

–bash–3.2# rm /path/to/large/file rm: /path/to/large/file: No space left on device

Essentially the same issue as this Unix thread from '08! https://www.unix.com/linux/69889-unable-remove-file-using-rm-disk-space-full.html

I've tried echo x > /path/to/large/file, no good.

It's borked. Does anyone have any suggestions that aren't "wipe the drive and restore from your backup"?

remove duplicate emails

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 04:00 AM PDT

I have, due to aborted imports, many duplicate emails. How can I find these duplicate emails and delete them, the best would be to archive them first, just to be safe.

I found http://www.nickshubin.com/articles/mac/remove_mail_duplicates.html - does Araxis still do the job? Also: Any experiences with the script at http://bohemianboomer.com/2015/02/free-how-to-remove-duplicate-email-messages-in-os-xs-mail-app/ ?

Any recommendations how I can solve this mess? I don't feel like exporting to a local imap server, using Thunderbird to delete duplicates and to re-import them.

Aditional info:

The duplicate emails are in my local mail folder, so no imap et al involved.

What I did so far:

  1. Switched of Mail
  2. moved the local filestorage out of the mail folder
  3. restarted Mail and deleted it from there again, as it was still there
  4. used Gemini duplicate remover to remove all duplicane messages (any other should have worked as well
  5. I did not touch the attachments!
  6. Will import the mail again and I hope that the duplicates are gone

Any comments to this procedure? If it works, I will post it as an answer.

Is it possible to configure finder in Mavericks to open new tab (by clicking plus sign or cmd+t) in the same directory by default?

Can retina display features be enabled on older (non-retina) displays?

Posted: 05 Apr 2022 09:42 AM PDT

I have an older iMac, without a true retina display. I want to be able to scale the user interface like the retina macs do, but I can't seem to find a way to do that. screenshot from Apple Support

Does anyone know a way to trick the computer into thinking it has a retina display, so the options are available in the Display PrefPane? That, or some utility that might let me access those settings.

Note, I'm not really talking about HiDPI mode, I've done that, it only has the option of pixel doubling. I want the variable scaling that is available on true retina displays.

I'm running mountain lion on a 2.5 GHz i5 iMac, about 1.5 years old.
