| More than one input to Automator shell script step? Posted: 13 Jan 2022 05:03 AM PST I'm trying to use Automator to create a "Quick Action" that will archive and encrypt a folder. I create a workflow that looks like this: The shell script gets the output of the previous step as an argument. But I need the output of both the previous steps. Is there a way to do that? The |
| Shortcuts for Homekit accessories in Control center not working Posted: 13 Jan 2022 05:00 AM PST I am having issues with the shortcuts for Homekit accessories in Control center, the accessories show as "Not responding". It does however show status changes from the 'unresponsive' accessories fast and accurately. If I turn off a light though the bridge or a button, it immediately changes in Control center. If I use the Home app, the status is also changed when I go back to Control center. The accessories do not show as unresponsive in the Home app or on my bridge. System info: |

| Posted: 13 Jan 2022 04:26 AM PST Every time I try to log into MS Teams from safari, it throws an error saying that "Teams is in preview for safari" and tells me to use the desktop application. It recommends disabling cross-site tracking in order to access Teams in safari, but I don't want to disable that option for obvious reasons. Is it the same for everyone or is there a fix for this? |
| macOS Focus: How to allow notifications from commandline apps Posted: 13 Jan 2022 01:20 AM PST I use a small utility to notify me when a commandline application finishes (in this case https://github.com/variadico/noti, but there are various solutions for this). I also use the new Focus modes. But how do I make sure these notifications are allowed? They show up in the notification center, but are suppressed. I can't find the app, nor the "Terminal" application to add to the list of allowed apps: Any idea how to allow this so I don't have to turn this off on my Mac? |
| Is it possible to remove mac os completely and install Windows on SSD rather than HDD? Posted: 13 Jan 2022 01:17 AM PST I've used my old iMac (iMac 17,1 late 2015) for about 6 years now, and I've got the new iMac now, so I have been trying to install windows on this old machine. However, when i use Bootcamp to install windows, it installs it on my HDD, making it unusablly slow and laggy. It literally takes 5 minutes to boot and 30 seconds to open a new program. But the most frustrating thing is that this machine has a SSD! Is there a way to erase MacOs completely and use the ssd as a boot drive for Windows? I don't care If i have to do a fresh install of windows. |
| Apple Cinema 20 Display on MacBook Air M1 2020: stop the flickering? Posted: 13 Jan 2022 12:15 AM PST I am trying to have my Apple Cinema 20 Display work as a second screen on my brand new MacBook Air M1 2020. Read this article and other videos and bought the following :
It works -almost- all right. The Cinema Display displays. But I get like parasites, like small zebras (like a bad rection on an old TV set) and the screen gets black for half a second to 2 seconds every now and then (from 3 seconds to a few minutes, no pattern). When image comes back, sometime there a sort of an horizontal line of raw pixels scrolling from top to down of the screen between older frame displayed and the refreshed one. Does someone know what could be causing this? And how to address it. It feels like I am almost there... but not. Thanks a lot to this community in advance. |

| Can you access the mp3 files of songs you've purchased on the iTunes Store? Posted: 12 Jan 2022 11:48 PM PST I'd like to purchase several mp3s to download to my Android phone on the iTunes Store on my Mac (due to the fact that I don't want to buy entire CDs for a single track or use an online service for them). However, I don't have the Apple Music app on my Android, and would like to be able to use the purchased mp3s on my phone nonetheless. Is it possible to download and copy the mp3 files of purchased songs from the iTunes Store? |
| USB file not showing on Mac Desktop Posted: 12 Jan 2022 10:42 PM PST I have a 4.0 GB USB formatted as NTFS that didn't appear on my Mac so I tried it on Windows and changed the format to ExFAT. I added files and tried it on my Mac, but it did not mount or show up in Disk Utilitiesl I can not figure out what the issue is. My plugs and ports are all working even the USB lights up so I can see that it is working and being used on the Windows PC and having files added I know it works. Can anyone help me figure out how to get my USB to show and work on my Mac. |

| Timemachine on MacOS Monterey-12.1 makes temporary volumes? Posted: 13 Jan 2022 12:58 AM PST I have timemachine backing up to two external USB disks. This mostly works OK: backups seem to alternate between disks. However, sometimes (there are 80 lines like this now, split between the two disks ( The number of these seems to go up and down over time, but I don't know what changes. My guess is that they are hourly backups that couldn't finish for whatever reason, and they stay around until that hourly backup would have normally been deleted. But some of them have dates going back 6 months or so; maybe those are the hourlies that were kept as a daily, then the daily kept as a weekly, and so forth? Is there a way to get these volumes written out or cleaned up, so that they don't clutter my |
| HTML on USB stick can not be rendered after editing Posted: 13 Jan 2022 12:57 AM PST I received a bunch of HTML files recently on a USB stick (FAT32), which were created on a Windows system, but with LF-line endings. I checked them in my browser (Firefox) on MacOS 10.14, and since on one of them I found a few changes to be done, I fired up my text editor and modified that file. After saving it, I tried to reload it, but Firefox refused now to show it and said that it has no permission to open this file. I checked the file from the command line, and found that I could display the file using fine and my changes were also present. I tried to restart Firefox, and even restarted the Mac itself, to no avail. Other browsers (Vivaldi, Chrome) also could not open the file. Looking at that directory Next I did a and found that all the "working" files (y, z, ...) showed their permissions as rwxrwxrwx (the unnecessary x-bit perhaps an artefact from the fact that the files were created on Windows), but the file x.html showed the permissions as rwxrwxrwx@. AFIK, the @ would indicate that the directory entry is in reality a link, but For experimenting a bit, I did a thereby creating a copy of those files. A also showed the @ in the permissions in the copied file. However the copied version, the version from Of course I now do have a fully working version in My best guess is that the problem is somehow related to the fact that FAT32 basically maintains files according to the infamous 8.3 naming scheme from MSDOS, and some shadow entry is used to store the "real" filename; but I don't see how this could explain the behaviour I experienced, because I never so far had problems when creating files on a USB stick on the Mac. Any ideas, how to explain the mystery? UPDATE: Following the comment given by gidds, who pointed out the the Probably that lastuseddate was set when I edited the file. I then did an While I can't say whether this value is reasonable, but since the same value is shown in both files, it does not explain why one file "work" and one of them doesn't. |
| How to Auto-switch Text-to-speech Voices on basis of language tags in text Posted: 13 Jan 2022 04:36 AM PST Is anyone aware of a TTS system for Mac which will automatically switch voices on the basis of language tags present in word processing or html text? For example, it would switch to a French voice to correctly pronounce a French word or text run in a longer English text. I'm looking for an extension or service that could speak a web page or email text coded like and switch from an English to a French voice for the last word. It doesn't appear that Apple's own text-to-speech system will do this, voices normally have to be changed by the user (except possibly when the languages are in different scripts, like English and Hebrew). I have found one app, Ghostreader +, which does the voice switching, but it requires using the app to add its own language tags and docs are saved in its own non-standard format. Something which works with tags already present for example in html would be a lot more useful. |
| Why does the orange dot persist after quitting Zoom on macOS? Posted: 12 Jan 2022 08:53 PM PST I've noticed that macOS (Monterey) is showing an orange dot in the status bar that is attributed to Zoom. I understand that this is a new security and privacy feature in macOS indicating that an application is accessing the microphone. When I quit Zoom, however, the orange dot persists. I'm wondering if Zoom, or a related service, is still running in the background after the application quit. I've checked the Activity monitor and did not see Zoom listed or anything obviously associated with Zoom. Why does the orange dot persist after quitting Zoom on macOS? |
| How can I let Edge ask for being the default browser? Posted: 12 Jan 2022 11:02 PM PST On my Mac I use Safari for private purposes and Edge for work purposes. When I'm working, it's convenient to have Edge as the default browser. Now I have to set it each day manually (after the working day I set it back to Safari, which asks for that). What I want is that Edge does ask for being the default browser. Is this possible? NB: Using a different account is not convenient for the way I work. |
| The max amount of tab groups (safari 15+) Posted: 12 Jan 2022 08:34 PM PST We know safari already has a max limit of 500 tabs total, and with the new iOS 15 update, the number of tabs you currently have open is nicely displayed. However, iOS 15 also introduced tab groups, which are synchronised across all devices. What is the amount of tab groups one account can have, max? |
| Preventing macOS Big Sur from automatically swtiching to Bluetooth audio device output Posted: 12 Jan 2022 10:40 PM PST I have a bluetooth headset that I use for an Android phone and a MacBook. It has the feature of being able to connect to both at the same time, and switch to whichever one is actively playing. There is no mixing, the audio is just "stolen". However, when some audio applications idle, they will "steal" the audio. So, if I'm using my phone, and the MacBook will come into range while Spotify is open (but not playing) it will pause playback on the phone and switch to the MacBook. This is because once the headset is in range, macOS automatically connects to it and then switches the default audio device to it. So far in Big Sur I've not found an option to disable it. This question has a solution that works for previous versions but not Big Sur. It will even switch audio devices if I have wired headphones connected! Is there some workaround I can use for Big Sur? |

| Posted: 12 Jan 2022 07:32 PM PST After waking from a long sleep Big Sur's UI is practically unusable. It's slow, apps don't draw properly, there's lots of redraws happening. It's like garbage collection isn't happening for UI elements. Examples include:
I've tried the following unsuccessfully
The only thing that works which I'd like to avoid is to restart the machine. The UI is usable enough to show the Apple menu and select Restart..., even though the menu highlighting is flakey. NB: I've tried all the suggested solutions at Big Sur - unable to focus any app or make mouse/keyboard inputs after waking from sleep?. Whilst it seems like a possible duplicate question, the accepted answer has had no effect. Edit: my system details:
Edit: 23rd Feb 2021 Tried the following without success:
Still finding the only solution is to restart the machine :-(. It seems to be related to the GPU somehow. |

| Chrome: full screen shortcut does not work Posted: 12 Jan 2022 09:27 PM PST Suddenly after using chrome for around six months on macOS, (first Mojave and then Catalina), the (very useful) Full-Screen shortcut (Ctrl+Cmd+F) has stopped working. Both, clicking the green button and selecting full screen from the view options work just fine, but chrome rejects to respond to the keyboard shortcut. The other shortcuts that I use on Chrome like forward and back work fine too. The full-screen shortcut also works on all other apps I use. Chrome version and macOS version: Is this a known issue on Chrome or macOS Catalina? Is there anything I can do to fix it? Rebooting the computer does not fix this and it is consistently reproducible on my machine. (MacBook Pro 2018) |
| Make all occurrences of string superscript Posted: 13 Jan 2022 05:03 AM PST I'm currently using Pages to write a rather long essay and have run into an annoying problem I can't seem to find the answer to. I have included a bibliography in my document and have referenced the bibliography elsewhere in the essay with
My intention is to format the sentence like this:
Whilst I understand you can select the text, click Format, Font, Baseline and select Superscript; this would take an extremely long time to do as there are around 100 places where I would need to do this. Is there a way to find and replace a string, e.g. [1] with [1], throughout the whole document? |
