FaceTime video calls with audio work fine, but WhatsApp video calls do not have audio

Posted: 17 Jan 2022 03:49 AM PST

I have seen a very strange problem on an iPhone SE: audio not working during video calls via WhatsApp, but Facetime works fine on the same device.

Also, audio calls via WhatsApp do not support speaker audio.

I am assuming the problem is related both to software and hardware (because this phone was repaired a couple of times), but since Facetime works on the same device (audio + video) I would assume WhatsApp should work too.

Is there any way to make WhatsApp video calls work with audio work?

Use magsafe and USB-C display with charging capabilities

Posted: 17 Jan 2022 03:31 AM PST

I've a m1 macbook pro 14" and a LG 27UK670-B display connected via USB-C to the mac. Connecting via USB-C leads to the macbook charging it's battery (taking power from the display). I'd however prefer using the original magsafe charger while keeping the USB-C for simplicity. Can this be accomplish or should I drop the USB-C connection and simply go for the HDMI option? TYVM.

Does a Code-Signed application require security permissions?

Posted: 17 Jan 2022 03:34 AM PST

I am contemplating whether to purchase a Personal Apple CodeSign certificate, for 99$/year. I have a medium-sized user base, and an app that is installed multiple times a month by each user. Upon installation, the user is required to allow 6 permissions in their Security Settings, for the app to function properly.

If I am to code-sign my app with an Apple certificate, would this eliminate the need for my users to perform this lengthy step each time they install the app? If not, what other approach can I take to eliminate this installation step?

iPhone SE 2 changing between portrait and regular mode, what exactly is happening and how can I reduce my visual confusion/distraction?

Posted: 16 Jan 2022 08:36 PM PST

I just upgraded from an iPhone 6 to an SE-2 and when I unlock my phone with the camera app running and bring it up to take a photo it usually switches between portrait and regular mode mid-swing.

I don't have any problems actually taking the photo, but that visual discontinuity as the image on the screen changes during the mode change still momentarily confuses/distracts me.1

Is there any way I can set the phone so that when I unlock it (with the camera app running) it comes up in regular mode and doesn't need to switch modes every time?

1It's great if it doesn't confuse/distract you, perhaps I'm your neurological inferior. But it does me so please no answers of the "What's wrong with you is..." variety, thank you!

The Highlight Colors have disappeared from the System Preferences of my macOS Catalina

Posted: 16 Jan 2022 11:22 PM PST

When I select text in a document, there is no highlighting color. I can't verify what I have selected. In System Preferences > General, where you choose Highlight Color, all the little rectangles that display the chosen color are white. If I choose Other, I get all the many ways to choose color but whatever I choose, when I go back the little rectangle is white. What should I do?

Pages change the words after exporting as PDF

Posted: 17 Jan 2022 03:47 AM PST

As we know, most companies have their NLP applications to analyze the resumes they receive. I recently noticed that if you export your PDF using Pages, the actual content will be changed after exporting to PDF.

For example, I have "Computer Software Engineering" on my Pages; you can see in the PDF file it is the same. Still, if you want to copy this sentence, it will be "Computer SoCware Engineering." after you paste the content in a text editor. So it will confuse pdf processor NLP application when you want to find a job.

How should I stop pages from making changes like this to my pdf files? please don't tell to use Microsoft word

How to move iTunes library from High Sierra Mac to Monterey Mac

Posted: 16 Jan 2022 05:53 PM PST

I'm setting up a Mac for someone who previously had files scattered across several separate computers. I upgraded the destination to Monterey and have been copying over files successfully.

Now I'm dealing with iTunes. She had her iTunes library on a Mac running High Sierra. I copied over the iTunes folder into ~/Music on the new Mac. It looks like I can't just tell Music (app) to use the iTunes folder. I tried selecting that folder (preferences/files) and her music didn't magically appear inside Music (app).

Is there another way to do this? Do I need to "import" in Music to pull her music in? If I do that does it create copies of the music files? This is important at present because she's got about 80GB of music and only 50GB of space left on the new Mac (for now - I plan to clear out more space).

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

BigSur and up: How can you stop the Music app from starting to play once bluetooth is connected without disabling System Integrity Protection?

Posted: 16 Jan 2022 10:38 PM PST

How could the Music app's auto play on the connection of a bluetooth speaker be disabled or sidestepped so that

  1. you could not hear music playing;
  2. you could not hear music playing and the app would come to the foreground;
  3. it would start playing; and/or
  4. it wouldn't even launch in the first place;

without having to disable System Integrity Protection?

One or more similar questions were addressed in connection with sub-BigSur MacOS without System Integrity Protection, and the answers typically required took advantage of the lack of it.

Can system extensions be removed after they're approved by the user?

Posted: 16 Jan 2022 11:22 PM PST

Does anyone know whether Apple has resolved this → problem?

When you install a third-party application that includes a kernel extension, the system will block the extension until you approve it in Security & Privacy Preferences. When you approve it, a stub copy of the app containing the extension itself is made in /Library/StagedExtensions.

If you later try to remove the application, deleting the app itself does not delete the stub, and since /Library/StagedExtensions is restricted by SIP, it cannot be removed manually either. Is there any way to fully remove these leftover system extensions?

How can I set a poster frame for a video in Photos.app in MacOS Monterey?

Posted: 16 Jan 2022 05:58 PM PST

I'd like to set the poster frame for some of my videos to make it easier to see what they are at a glance. As this answer describes, this used to be possible using the gear menu and then later using a pop-up on the timeline in edit mode.

In MacOS Monterey, neither of these options seem to work. The timeline editor still behaves the same way, but the popup to set the poster frame doesn't exist: Photos.app timeline editor with no poster frame popup

Sometimes if I drag the start time around and then exit the editor the poster frame changes, but it doesn't seem to happen reliably or predictably.

How can I set the poster frame for a video with Photos.app in MacOS Monterey?

M1 MacBook runs out of battery while sleeping

Posted: 16 Jan 2022 06:13 PM PST

My MacBook(MacBook Pro M1 Max 16-inch, 2021, Monterey v12.0.1) runs out of battery while sleeping. When I run

pmset -g log

the following log appears repeatedly while sleeping.

I unchecked Contact in iCloud settings. But this didn't work.

Every Monday the battery is completely drained again.

What is the cause and how to fix it?

Since then, the log has been changed as follows. It still seems like something wakes up every minute though.

Calendar events created by Eventbrite disappear after 1 second

Posted: 17 Jan 2022 02:02 AM PST

The Eventbrite app allows you to "Add to Calendar" on any event. I made sure that it has permissions to access my calendar under privacy settings. However, after adding an event to the calendar, it disappears after 1 second.

I think this may be related to my deleting of the Eventbrite calendar in the past. I was hoping it would try to recreate it, but alas it doesn't. Any suggestion for how to get this feature to work again? I tried searching, but nothing comes up.

Disk is no longer encrypted?

Posted: 16 Jan 2022 06:04 PM PST

I swap between two external drives for Time Machine backups. I swap every few weeks. I just swapped back to a disk that used to be encrypted but it isn't anymore. The backups are working but I no longer have to enter my password. I just checked now and the other disk is still encrypted. I also checked to see whether I added the password to the keychain and I can't find it.

Here's some information about the two drives. The "Top" volume is not encrypted but the "Bottom" one is. Interestingly, the encrypted drive is a logical volume and the unencrypted drive is a physical volume. I'm not sure it's related to my problem, though.

Disk Info from Disk Utility

I have enabled FileVault on the system drive since I last used this "unencrypted" drive. Could that have caused this? Do I have to reformat and re-encrypt to reenable encryption? Is there any way to encrypt in place like I did with the system drive?

I noticed there are some questions already about similar topics but they seem to be really old. This is for Big Sur.

How do I choose which Subway line maps uses?

Posted: 17 Jan 2022 03:07 AM PST

If I use Apple Maps for transit directions, oftentimes one of the steps will say something like this:

enter image description here

If you then tap on the row that says to take the A, C or E trains, you'll be taken to a screen like this:

enter image description here

Notice how the previous screen mentioned I could take A, C, or E trains, but this screen only shows me information about a random train it chose, the E train.

How do I change which train it's displaying information for?

For example, I'd like the same level of info about "Upcoming departures" for the A or C trains. However, no matter which element I tap on, or what swipe gestures I try, I can't seem to find a way to get information about one of the other trains.

Is there any way to do this in Apple Maps, or are we stuck with whatever Apple randomly chooses when there are multiple trains that can take you somewhere?

Update: To be clear, my question should not be confused with the initial screen showing you which route to take. I do see an option to choose many different routes:

enter image description here

My question is about once I hit "go" next to the first route in this list, which has options to take 3 different trains, how do I see information about the other 2 trains?

Airpods battery life

Posted: 16 Jan 2022 07:03 PM PST

I just got my Airpods gen 2 a couple of weeks ago. However the battery life is nowhere near the 24 hours Apple says.

I took notes, and got 9½ hours of listen time, before the Charging Case was empty (5%; no longer charging the Airpods). Once the Case is empty, the Airpods slowly discharge, inside the Case, at around 6% per hour. This appears to be the case for others, but this would mean they would be empty within a day.

I exclusively use them when walking the dog, so 4 times a day, for about 30 minutes. I get only 4 days of use out of them, before I have to recharge them.

My question is; Is it normal to get so few hours out of them, with my usage pattern? Or should I have them checked out, by the store, under warranty? I know the 24 hour they promise is under ideal conditions, but getting around half that seems odd. Other than this, I'm really liking my Airpods.

Some additional info:

  1. My volume is always below 50%
  2. I have them connected to my iPhone 8 (which supports Bluetooth 5 AFIK)
  3. "hey siri" is disabled
  4. I only listen to podcasts (Overcast App)
  5. After walking for half an hour, the Airpods charge is around 90-93%, which is about right (10% of 5 hours = half an hour). When I put them in their case, and wait for them to charge up again, the case looses 6-8%. One would expect this to be only 2-3%.
  6. I measured charging only the case with a generic Charger Doctor, and got 326mAh of current usage (5% -> 100%).
  7. One would expect the case to add 19 hours of usage (i.e. 24h total - 5h for the Airpods themselves). So I get exactly halve.
  8. I tried looking this up, but everyone is only talking about the battery like of the airpods themselves (5h), not the case (or both combined).
  9. (I don't live near a Apple store)

Is there a way to fix QuickLook bugs

Posted: 17 Jan 2022 01:39 AM PST

I'm experiencing multiple bugs with QuickLook since Catalina. They are still present on Big Sur 11.1.

1°) Reversed slideshow

To reproduce:

  • select multiple pictures
  • press space bar
  • the slideshow order is reversed: the last picture is displayed instead of the first, and we have to use the left arrow to display the next picture

It also happens in fullscreen.

2°) Alt key no longer zooms to 100%

Previously we could press the alt key to zoom at 100% (one pixel of the picture = one pixel of the monitor). It was perfect to see quickly know if a picture is sharp or not.

Now we have to press MAJ-CMD-0 to zoom, MAJ-CMD-9 to unzoom. And in Preview.app, it's not MAJ-CMD-9/0, but ALT-CMD-9/0. o_O

3°) Two-fingers double-tap to zoom does not go back

To reproduce:

  • select a picture
  • press space bar
  • execute a two-fingers double-tap on the trackpad (or one-finger double-tap on a Magic Mouse) -> it zooms to 100% (or 200%, see #4 below)
  • do it again. We'd expect it to unzoom, but it instead zooms to 200%, and we can't go back to see the entire picture with that gesture. The only way is to execute a pinch, which takes much more time to do.

4°) HiDPI monitors are not correctly supported

To reproduce:

  • use a HiDPI monitor (say a 27" 4K monitor)
  • select a photo (say a 1600px * 900px picture)
  • press space bar
  • the picture is displayed at twice its size (like if it was 3200px * 1800px), making it pixelated. When using the MAJ-CMD-9/0 shortcut to zoom/unzoom to 100%, it instead zooms to 200%, making the feature useless to know if it's sharp or not.

5°) Scrolling no longer works in fullscreen index sheet view

To reproduce:

  • select many photos
  • press alt-space to start QuickLook fullscreen
  • open the index sheet
  • try to scroll having your cursor above the background, it does not work. If your cursor is above a picture, it does.

The problem does not happen if we're not in fullscreen.

6°) There's a weird flickering when opening the index sheet view

To reproduce:

  • select many photos
  • press alt-space to start QuickLook fullscreen
  • open the index sheet
  • the animation is broken: the thumbnails first appear above the image that was displayed fullscreen, then that image comes back above the thumbnails and is animated, and finally the thumbnails are back.

Does someone managed to fix at least a few of them?

Thanks

Can I disable font antialiasing in Terminal.app on Big Sur?

Posted: 17 Jan 2022 12:05 AM PST

10pt Monaco looks amazing

I'm slightly addicted to how 10pt Monaco renders with antialiasing turned off in Terminal.app.

On upgrading to Big Sur, that checkbox in Preferences doesn't do anything.

toggleing antialias

Well, it does something, but it doesn't turn off antialiasing. It seems to just make the bold font less bold.

Does anyone know how to get Terminal.app to render without any antialiasing at all?

"Wake on LAN" my Mac Mini from my PC?

Posted: 17 Jan 2022 01:08 AM PST

I would like to be able to use the Wake On LAN feature to wake up my Mac Mini from my Windows PC, and I have tried two different programs (Solar Winds and NirSoft) but it is not working.

  1. I have already enabled "Wake for Network Access" in the settings on my Mac Mini.
  2. I have Mac Mini connected to my (Linksys) router with an Ethernet cable.
  3. I have a Windows 10 PC connected to the same router over WiFi.
  4. I can use VNC to screen share and control my Mac Mini from my PC. This works really well.
  5. I can ping the Mac Mini (when it is on) from my PC and it responds.

Any ideas on how to close the loop on this?

Is this display problem of my MacBook Air a GPU issue?

Posted: 16 Jan 2022 11:04 PM PST

I have a 2019 MacBook Air and sometimes, this problem happens when I try to open the laptop; it glitches. I think this happens because I restored the Mac and deleted all my old files last week.

But this really only happened a few times in the past week and only happend twice. I don't know if I have to fix it or if it's covered under warranty.

Force keyboard re-identification in Catalina MacOS

Posted: 16 Jan 2022 10:01 PM PST

I switched from a Logitech keyboard to a Mac external keyboard on my macbook pro with Catalina MacOS. Every time I hit capitol M it types MZ. It could be the case that the keyboard is malfunctioning, but before I replace it I thought of trying to re-identify the keyboard and see if it helps.

MacOS user guide says this:

  1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Keyboard.
  2. Click Change Keyboard Type, then follow the onscreen instructions.

However I could not find Change Keyboard Type in that interface - see screenshot below. I also tried this sudo command but it didn't work.

How I could force a keyboard re-identification?

How Do I Type with IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet)?

Posted: 16 Jan 2022 09:16 PM PST

How Do I Type with IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet)? I need to type in Phonetics, but I cannot find a keyboard. I tried the IPA Unicode 6.2 keyboard, but it did not work. It installed, but when I selected it, I could only type the normal english-latin characters. I cannot use copy/paste sites like This, as I need to type a lot.

Prevent Open/Save dialog from solliciting external hard drives

Posted: 16 Jan 2022 08:07 PM PST

I have several external drives, which I don't use constantly, and so they spin down, and rest.

Unfortunately for me, every time I have the "Open..." or "Save..." dialogs, Mac OS X spins these hard drives back up, even if the currently displayed folder does not belong to those drives, and even though nothing of those drives appears anywhere (no treeview on the side, no folder from those drives in the sidebar). I don't have Spotlight enabled.

Obviously a solution would be to disconnect/reconnect those drives, but that is something I would like to avoid.

Is there a way to tell Mac OS X not to eagerly/preemptively fire up the drives?

How do I quickly find large files and folders on my mac?

Posted: 17 Jan 2022 03:17 AM PST

I need to free up space on my Mac and know there are a ton of hidden files that are eating up space (Logic for example downloads a lot of instruments... somewhere).

Is there any way I can create an interactive (or non-interactive) treemap of my hard drive?

Here is an example of a treemap from Wikipedia

Task Switcher moves to non-primary display on Mavericks-Catalina

Posted: 16 Jan 2022 07:27 PM PST

I'm running OS X on a computer with two displays that are not mirrored.

One of them is configured as the primary display using the menu bar location in Displays System Preference, pre-Mavericks style. (Although both displays actually have the menu bar.)

Problem: cmd + tab Task Switcher sometimes appears in secondary display instead of the primary. Once it starts appearing on the secondary display, it might soon move back to the primary, too.

Questions:

  1. Why does this happen? I have seen it more than once but haven't yet figured out the pattern.

  2. How to configure the task switcher to appear only on the primary display?

According to this similar question, How to choose on which display Application Switcher shows?, the behavior depends on which display has the dock. Follow-up variant question:

2'. How to configure the dock to appear only on the primary display?

This also happens on all later releases through at least Catalina.
