Posted: 24 Jan 2022 01:15 AM PST ContextAfter writing some Bash code that installs a productivity setup on Ubuntu, I was trying it out on a Mac and got an error unknown (afaik) to Google and Stackexchange. Based on the error message, I assume it pertains to a basic configuration setting within Mac. Since I have no experience with Mac, and was not able to find a duplicate of the error, I thought I'd ask the question here. Error ReproductionThe following code tries to install a productivity setup. (It does not do anything without user confirmation, except show a prompt to ask what the user would like to install): Expected Output Actual Output (Error Message) System DescriptionI tested it on two Macbooks, I do not know their exact types, one was an old one (eg. 3-8 years old), the other was a newer one, (e.g. 2-5 years old). Both produced the same error. (Note, this error is particular to Mac only (afaik), the code works on Ubuntu 21.04 LTS). QuestionWhy is this error generated and how can I prevent it? |
VPN connection terminates: L2TP failed to set port-mapping for en0, errorCode: -65564 Posted: 24 Jan 2022 01:24 AM PST The following issue surfaced last week and I am not sure anymore if this happened before or after I upgraded to Monterey. I am using a VPN connection for work but since last week this connection only lasts for 60 to 90 seconds. In the first 60 seconds everything is working. The machine is connected and has internet. After these 60 seconds the internet connection stops working and around 30 seconds later the VPN client tells me that the VPN connection has been terminated. Now, after some trying around it was suggested to me to try to access the internet from another connection so I switched from my home router to a mobile hot spot. And there you go. With the mobile hot spot everything is working fine for hours. Clearly, this makes the router the main suspect but I have been working with it for months now and since I didn't touch it, I find it hard to believe that it is the cause. I've searched the internet for this issue but I couldn't find anything useful. Is there anything I can do? At least to get more information about where this issue truly originates from? Logging outputI took a look at the Below you can look at both entire sessions. Working (mobile hot spot) Not working (router)Router event logEstablishing the VPN connection, I can see these log entries in my router's event log: |
Posted: 24 Jan 2022 12:59 AM PST The Preview application has a Markup toolbar, which allows drawing over the top of an image. I was thinking about the possibility of using this feature to draw opaque shapes to redact sensitive portions of an image. My specific case is hiding names from a PNG screenshot. This is on a version of macOS prior to Big Sur, so the "Redact Selection" option is not available in the app. My intuition is that, as a raster-graphics image format, the resulting PNG wouldn't contain the redacted text even as non-visible image data. This differs from something like a PDF, where the data is still present in a layer behind the redaction, and therefore recoverable by examining the file data. Can Preview be used in this manner to irrevocably remove sensitive information from a PNG image? |
Host certain folder for public access via URL [closed] Posted: 23 Jan 2022 10:12 PM PST Hopefully I describe this in the way it can help me. With Docker, or any other service, is it possible for me to host a drive live on a website of mine, in which users anywhere, (not just my network), can access to watch/listen/play and download stuff from? I believe there was a proprietary application on Windows that had a similar approach to this goal, but I can't recall the name of it. Is this possible for MacOS devices? I think it's a unique idea, and I want to share some medias with friends in a different way. If not possible, are there any close alternatives? Thanks in advance! |
Reset Chinese Input Method candidate word frequency records? Posted: 23 Jan 2022 09:57 PM PST This issue happens for all macOS 10.x. For Chinese input methods like Sucheng, it has a feature that can "Adjust word frequency" according to the frequency of usage of each word. When I disabled the "Adjust word frequency", the word order remains the same, but no longer changes according to the frequency of usage. How can I reset the word usage count to zero? I tried to remove and re-add the input method, the word frequency remains the same. |
Is there any way to monitor Messages signed-in status? Posted: 23 Jan 2022 09:38 PM PST I'm not a Apple guy, but I use a Mac Mini for AirMessage - software that enables you communicate with iMessage peeps on other platforms. It works pretty darn well actually, except for when Messages periodically signs me out for whatever reason and I don't notice I've been logged out and I miss stuff. The problem is, as I alluded to, is that I don't actually use my Mac Mini. It's just on, no monitor, connected to WiFi, and passing messages around. Is there a way to monitor the Messages logged-in status? Maybe catch the log-out event and run a script? Can you tx/rx messages in a terminal? Anything really to help me notify myself that I've been logged out of messages. Thanks! |
Messages: is this Apple Support or a scam Posted: 23 Jan 2022 09:28 PM PST So, I had an issue with my phone and I decided to text Apple Support. I was going to call, but it was pretty late and they were not picking up calls, so I decided to text. However, after sending messages to the number (800)-692-7753, I had no clue if this was legitimate or not. After I asked them if they were legitimate, they actually used my first name so I don't know. I heard of phishing stuff in the past, and I could not tell if this was it. Messages claims it's verified, but I don't know if I can be sure. If someone could please verify this, it would be much appreciated. On iMessage if I click on the profile, it says:

Why does MacBook Pro 12.1 Monterey drop characters during password input? Posted: 24 Jan 2022 12:07 AM PST After wakeup from sleep, one user on a multiuser system is selected. When a password is prompted, MacBook loses several characters of a 6 character password. Upon attempting to carefully type the password, I discovered that at times after the first two characters are input the password prompt resets in the middle of typing and the first two characters are erased and the third and further characters are accepted as the full password, which of course fails. |
Loss of numerical keypad to enter alarm times Posted: 23 Jan 2022 08:18 PM PST For a while within the past year, I was delighted to find that my iPhone allowed me to enter an alarm time using a numerical keypad instead of the simulated dials. Now, it has reverted to the dials. I wonder whether it is because I recently upgraded from iOS 14.4 to 15.2.1. Was this in fact determined by the iOS version? I'm a fan of installing as few apps as possible, and relying on native functionality. Is there any way to get the numerical keypad back without installing an app? |
iPhone iMessage using microphone at random times Posted: 24 Jan 2022 12:07 AM PST So I was on iMessage when I noticed the orange dot all of a sudden go off, even though I was just typing. This was really strange, so I checked the App Privacy, and it appears every day in the past 7 days the microphone was used. For example:
I don't know why some times are just for two minutes and some times don't even specify the duration. This is really scary and I was wondering if anyone had any insight into this. |
How do you enter Recovery Mode on Mac OS X 10.5.8? Posted: 24 Jan 2022 12:07 AM PST How can I get my iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), to enter Recovery Mode? I've tried: Cmd+R Opt+Cmd+R I've tried while restarting and I've tried after shutting down and then Cmd+R after powering up. System returns to the home screen. |
switch between webcams on macOS Posted: 23 Jan 2022 07:10 PM PST I know that with (eg) the Logi Connect app I can switch between Logitech web cameras and feed that via the virtual camera driver to apps like Teams. If I want to do the same using just one external webcam (in this case a Logi C922) and the built-in MacBook Pro camera is there anything either within macOS or a 3rd party utility (hopefully more lightweight than OBS or similar) that I can use? The scenario is that I have the external camera mounted on my external monitor and that's fine when I'm looking at the external monitor on a call as the eyeline is natural, but I'd like to be able to switch to the MBP camera when I'm looking/working on the screen to maintain the eyeline on the call. |
Adding equations in Keynote using keyboard only Posted: 23 Jan 2022 06:16 PM PST I'm making a Keynote presentation with a lot of equations. To add an equation, I can press option-CMD-E, and then I can type the LaTeX code for the equation. However, to finish editing the equation and insert it into the document, I have to move the mouse pointer to the "Insert" button and click it. My question is whether there is a way to do this using only the keyboard, so that I can enter equations into the text without using the trackpad at all. Here's what I've tried:

How can I change the order of accounts in the iOS Calendar app? Posted: 23 Jan 2022 06:47 PM PST I have an iCloud and Gmail account set up in the Calendar app on iOS. The Gmail account is shown at the top, but I would prefer to have it below the iCloud account. Is there any way to change the order of accounts in the Calendar? I can't find an option in the UI. If there is some workaround (like removing/adding the accounts in a certain order), I would be happy with that as well. |
You may not install to this volume because the computer is missing a firmware partition Posted: 24 Jan 2022 12:23 AM PST I have a 13 inch MacBook Pro 2015 model. The Mac had Big Sur installed on the internal SSD. This internal SSD died and thanks to macOS Recovery over the internet (Option-Command-R), I managed to install El Captain on an external SSD drive. I am trying to upgrade to Big Sur, but the option to choose my external SSD during installation is greyed out with the message

MacBook Pro Retina turns off during Apple logo Posted: 23 Jan 2022 06:03 PM PST I have a mid-2014 15-inch MacBook Pro Retina. I was using it half an hour ago, and everything worked perfectly. I turned it off and left it for five minutes or less. I turned it back on to check something I forgot, and now it won't boot. the little progress bar underneath the Apple logo fills in much slower than normal, and the computer turns off when the progress bar is about 2/3 full. Battery is fine. The computer was plugged in before I turned it off, so the battery is full, and it's plugged in now. I have a Windows partition I can boot from with no problems since the Mac problem started. Trying to start in safe mode results in either a black screen indefinitely or the computer turning off when the progress bar is maybe 1/10 full. Trying to start in diagnostics mode results in a black screen indefinitely. Tried resetting the system management controller. Nothing changed. Tried resetting the PRAM. What happened is the Mac kept restarting every five seconds or so while I kept cmd+alt+P+R held down and then returned to the above problem when I let go. If it helps, the internal SSD is a 960-GB Aura drive with two partitions: 760 GB with Catalina and 200 GB with Windows 10. It is not the internal drive that came originally with the Mac, but the replacement was made several years ago and I'd never had a problem with it before. |
How can I debug an extremely slow login? Posted: 23 Jan 2022 09:00 PM PST Recently, I poured water onto the keyboard of my MacBook 2017 (4 thunderbolt), and I forced shutdown it. After letting it dry for two weeks, I opened it and everything seems to work. It also passes the Apple Hardware Test. However, login (login window, switching user, authenticating for root permission, terminal login) is extremely slow, taking around 20 to 40 seconds. After restarting a couple of times, the behavior does not change. After reinstalling macOS 10.13.6, High Sierra, (keeping application and data), the behavior persists. After starting up in Safe Mode and restarting, the time shortened a little bit. To verify that this is not a hardware problem, I copied the system partition to another MacBook Pro (same generation) and I can see the same behavior, suggesting that this is a software issue. Update: On the other MacBook Pro, I run Things I have tried on my other MacBook Pro that does not work:

Is it possible to change ringing sound of Skype for iOS Posted: 23 Jan 2022 09:46 PM PST Does anybody know how to change the default ringing sound of Skype for iOS? Slow login and Terminal loading time in Yosemite, possibly related to open directory Posted: 23 Jan 2022 07:04 PM PST I have a problem with slow login times in Yosemite. Logging in is speedy after booting, but after a while (a few days usually) it slows down and can take 20-30 seconds. The time to load a new Terminal window / tab also increases. If I reboot, the problem is fixed...for a while. I tried the answers in this question and nothing seemed to work. I ran the profiling suggested here and this part of the output looks suspicious: But further Googling hasn't turned up anything helpful for solving the problem. Any ideas on how I can further diagnose or fix this issue? |
Can't resize external hard drive partition Posted: 24 Jan 2022 12:30 AM PST I remember very clearly back when I formatted the drive, that I chose everything that St. Steve prescribed me to, GPT table, HFS+ partitions, even though other platforms can't write to HFS+. Now, surprise surprise, a year later when I have to partition the drive, Disk Utility says "This partition can't be modified", and diskutil(8) says "Volume format does not support resizing". It's not encrypted, there shouldn't be anything in the way. Unable to Resize Partitions talks in depth about resizing corestorage, which is irrelevant here. |
