"Doubleclick to minimize enabled" prompt on Mac - how to disable it? Posted: 22 Jan 2022 02:38 AM PST In my Mac settings, I enabled doubleclick on window title to minimize. And it works. But, randomly I get this incredibly annoying prompt asking me if I want to revert to default: NO, I don't want to revert, I enabled it - because I wanted to. How to disable this prompt? It just starts popping randomly :( |
Homebrew Apache errors after upgrading to Monterey, how to solve error 256 Posted: 22 Jan 2022 01:21 AM PST So, this seems to be a relatively common problem, but following the steps other users used to resolve the issue don't seem to be working for me. I recently upgraded OSX to Monterey on my early 2015 MBP. Currently running the Running Currently running
I've tried reinstalling, but after completing the process starting httpd errors with Which is a fairly opaque I then did I uninstall deleting the suggested directories, following a reinstall it goes back to the So, this is where I have ended up, a borked Apache install and not being sure where to go next... |
Posted: 21 Jan 2022 10:17 PM PST In order to get some idea of my sleep hours without buying an Apple watch, I'd like to take advantage of the fact that my laptop is (usually) the last person I see at night and the first person I see in the morning. Is there a simple, free, secure and forever unconnected to the internet way I can get a table or view of the beginning and ending nighttime periods when I don't use my laptop, except for a click or two in the middle of the night to see the time or to play or restart some music that was already playing from the browser? |
Posted: 21 Jan 2022 09:57 PM PST I would like the freedom to power my laptop from an external battery to avoid very frequent cycling between 100% and 90% (say 2 or 3 times a day) due to my unique work/travel habits. I would also like the freedom to want to do this and to ask here about it without that one particular user arguing that I should not want to do this nor should I want to have an answer to this question. Thank you! I've never bought an external battery large enough for a laptop; so I have no experience using them. Googling finds plenty of material on units that can recharge a laptop, but I am not sure if they recharge a laptop running at full power, say doing a numerical calculation while watching YouTube via USB hotlinking to 4G with my iPhone which is also being recharged via USB. Of course the above scenario is the worst case, but it could conceivably happen on a long train ride after a busy day. I am often moving around a lot and even on public transportation and simply can not plug in to mains power as frequently as I would like.

How to adjust screen resolution so image is crisp but larger on an external monitor Posted: 21 Jan 2022 06:29 PM PST I use an M1 MacBook Air connected to a Lenovo external display. The display is 24". Currently, everything is super tiny on the external display. If I change its resolution, things will get larger but they don't look as crisp. On some monitors, when changing the resolution, I get something like a slider that gives me options to get either more content on the screen on more space. But on this external monitor I don't get that. When I get to the resolution configurations, I see the following for the external monitor: I would like to get this slider: Is there an easy way out? What am I missing here? |
Posted: 22 Jan 2022 01:56 AM PST I made another admin account in my MacOS Monterey for my programming job. Then I had to change ownership of Homebrew directories to make it work. When I came back to my main account, Homebrew doesn't work. so I decide to to delete the new account and change the ownership of directories back to my main account. the problem starts when I ran the following command and I need to revert it back. after that sudo command doesn't work and shows following exception: here is the sudo permissions: I activated the root account to change permissions but it doesn't work. I also reinstalled the OS but there is no success. I tried to replace /usr directory with my friend /usr directory with the same OS but the directory and it's file are read only. I could not change things in Recovery Mode Terminal. Please advice. |

Installing macOS on an external SSD fails (m1) Posted: 22 Jan 2022 01:29 AM PST When trying to install MacOS on an external SSD, the internal SSD is always booted when restarting. When I select the external SSD in the bootloader, it only shows that the installation is corrupt. In the MacOS installer there is an option to select the disk on which you want to install MacOS. I just selected the external SSD. There is also a menu on M1 macs where you can decide from which SSD you want to boot from. Just hold the power bottom for like 15 seconds until it shows up. You can also configure a standard startup disk in your MacOS system preferences or in the mentioned boot loader. I watched some YouTube videos about it and it worked for them. They are able to install MacOS on multiple drives and select from which there wanna boot. I want to archive this to because of my work I need different installations. Can anyone help me installing MacOS on a external drive? Do you think there is a solution or is this more of a Mac bug? |
Can I clone an external hard drive bit for bit, incrementally? Posted: 21 Jan 2022 02:50 PM PST I have an external USB hard drive with many encrypted APFS volumes on it. I have a second identical external USB hard drive. Is there a macOS program that lets me clone the first to the second without mounting the encrypted volumes, and in a incremental way (e.g. subsequent copies only copy the changes)? I think all macOS based back up programs are like rsync in that they operate on the files (not on disk's). Disk Util has "Restore", but this copies a lot of data if I have only changed a few bytes. |
MBP with Separate Bluetooth Module Posted: 21 Jan 2022 08:22 PM PST I have a MacBook Pro 13.3" - Mid 2017 (A1708). I've been told by my local Mac repairer that this model has a separate bluetooth module (from the main wifi board) & that it's near impossible to fix or replace & would be 'horrendously expensive' to do so. This essentially means the value of my MBP has dropped considerably (I was in the process of selling it to upgrade). I know you can use a bluetooth dongle but that doesn't help or improve the sell price. Very disappointed as it's my first Mac. Not sure that I want to buy another Mac now. |
Does the Magic Keyboard with Touch ID work like a regular keyboard with T2 chip Macbooks? Posted: 21 Jan 2022 11:43 PM PST The Magic Keyboard with Touch ID requires Macbooks with Apple Silicon to exploit the Touch ID feature but does the keyboard work like a normal keyboard with an T2 chip Macbook? The idea is to buy it to use with an Intel Macbook and future proof it in case I purchase an Apple Silicon mac in the future. |
How do I reset/clear my external display settings(refresh rate) Posted: 21 Jan 2022 07:18 PM PST I set my external display's refresh rate from 60Hz to 25Hz(In the state of closing the MBP). Then when I connect my external monitor, the external monitor shows that the input is not supported.Since nothing can be displayed, I don't know how to reset the refresh rate. macos Catalina "Cannot connect to app store" popup Posted: 21 Jan 2022 03:56 PM PST I see this general issue has been asked about a number of times, but none of them appear to be exactly the same as in my case. The problem enters if I try to use a link to Apple One services, such as one.apple.com. If I do that, I get the popup below and I don't know what else to be looking for here. 2018 MBP running Catalina (10.15.7). I've tried every "solution" I can find online. All other network functionality is normal. No other Apple services seem to be impacted. Music works fine, iCloud seems fine, In fact the store itself even seems to work fine, I see no problems. Things I have tried/verified:
These seem to be the same "solutions" everyone lists everywhere but none have helped me. Does anyone know how to fix this? |
Chrome on macOS fullscreen shortcut unexpectedly changed Posted: 21 Jan 2022 11:52 PM PST I know for sure I didn't change it but somehow my Chrome browser's shortcut to enter or exit fullscreen mode has been changed to this combo (instead of Ctrl+Cmd+F). I've looked and found some answers but I don't want to set a custom keyboard shortcut like the answers suggested. I've restarted my Mac, reinstalled Chrome but the problem persists. It seems like there was an operation or app at some point changed the shortcut without my knowledge. macOS 12.1 |
Apple Mail not deleting mail off cPanel server Posted: 21 Jan 2022 10:01 PM PST My cPanel mail account has maxed out at 20GB (yep). I've spent half a day trying to work out what's clogging it up. I've gone through and purged thousands of emails, so my Trash is empty on the MacBook and also on the Roundcube web interface, but I can't for the life of me see where there are 40K emails that Roundcube/cPanel reckons is there. I've done the Mailbox > Erase Deleted Items thing and that hasn't done anything. I rang up support who were useless and just explained the obvious back to me. Any other ideas? Its driving me nuts. ps. I've just hit the Rebuild option and now its downloading 40K messages. I'll leave it on overnight and see what garbage it downloads but its just a complete mystery what is behind it, and I have to see what the 40K is so I can deleted it. I do get an enormous amount of spam that I delete regularly but I suspect the deleted mail is not being cleared from the cPanel server and remains hidden from view in the backend somewhere. |
Is there a medium power adapter for MacBook chargers? Posted: 21 Jan 2022 08:09 PM PST Apple's power adapter allows you to change the "input" from either the default 1-inch "short" attachment: ... or a "long" 1.8m Power Adapter Extension Cable: I'm looking for something in between these two:
Are there any 3rd party (or Apple-made) attachments like this, or are these two our only options? Note that even if the cord length is as short as 6 inches, it would likely fit the solution I'm looking for. |
How to connect 2nd monitor to iMac 2020 without usb-c? Posted: 21 Jan 2022 06:27 PM PST My iMac 2020 reboots when 2nd monitor is connected via USB-c. I've been through apple support so many times! I gave my iMac to Apple Genius etc. Nobody at Apple is willing to admit that iMac has a malfunction. I've been struggling with it for over 8 months and I know for a fact that it reboots only when I connect any 2nd monitor! Apple thinks I should go to the monitor's manufacturer or to Adobe (since I use Photoshop). I know that this monitor works great with other computers and it's not the only monitor I tried with my iMac. But only my iMac reboots. So support essentially is useless for me and I have to deal with it by myself. So I wonder is there any other way I can use a second monitor apart from connecting it via USB-c? Is it possible to use a Bluetooth dongle to my second monitor? Are there any other ways? Here is one of the crash logs: |
Using command line to activate Switch Control Posted: 22 Jan 2022 12:02 AM PST To activate Switch Control in Settings, I click the checkbox located in Accessibility -> Switch Control -> Enable Switch Control (at least in Catalina). If I want a program to open Switch Control and automate that process, I have to navigate through the System Preferences app (which I could do with AppleScript). It would be nice if there were a command I could run in the terminal to directly open the Switch Control Panel application. I couldn't find one in my research. What I tried: I followed the instructions in this answer. If it had worked as I wanted it to, I could have changed the "Switch Control" setting by editing its corresponding .plist file (sudo defaults write). When I tried this approach with the example provided in the answer (changing "Display Login Window as:" from "List of users" to "Name and password") it worked well. It didn't work when I tested it by changing the "Enable Switch Control" setting. Following the instructions, I made a copy of the preferences folder and the enclosed plist setting files: After changing the Switch Control setting and exiting System Preferences, I made a new copy: Next, to see which files changed, I tried: which doesn't return any "Binary files differ" messages. I then tried to use the Activity Monitor to find out what programs run when "Enable Switch Control" is on. I found a running application named Assistive Control (AssistiveControl in Activity Monitor). I ran When I try running the command with Switch Control off in System Preferences, it doesn't do anything. When I try the command when Switch Control is on, I get this error: How can I use the command line to activate Switch Control? It would be great if someone could help me out or give me suggestions. |
iOS 14 how to use "Open Wallet" and "Open Apple Card card" in automation and script Posted: 21 Jan 2022 06:04 PM PST Does anyone have an example or some pointers on using iOS 14 automation, shortcuts and scripting to open the wallet app and retrieve data from Apple Card? |
Prevent Safari from opening minimized window Posted: 21 Jan 2022 09:53 PM PST When I'm doing research for a project I'll have one window with lots of tabs. When I'm doing other work, I like to minimize that window to save it for later. What bothers me mightily is that I now have to always keep another Safari window non-minimized so that the minimized window(s) won't suddenly be maximised again when clicking a link in another application or wanting a new Safari window by clicking the app icon. I want that minimized project window to always stay minimized unless I actively bring it forward. Is there a way that Safari can treat that minimized window as "locked" in the dock? That it won't be maximized when I click a link in another application or click the Safari dock icon? I like this way of working with multiple windows, but I hate the fact that I can't really close the active non-minimized window I'm now working in because it will make the minimized window reappear at some point. |
Face time in a middle east version of iPhone in India Posted: 22 Jan 2022 12:48 AM PST I am planning to buy an iPhone 12 pro for my brother who is in Dubai now. But after a few months, he will go back to India. Middle East version of the iPhone doesn't have face time installed by default because it is not supported in UAE. But, If he takes his iPhone to India, can he install and use the face time in India? We buy only the unlocked version. I checked with the iPhone customer care. They say, "it is completely based on the carrier you are using". If I ask my service provider they are asking me to check with iPhone support. Any suggestions? |
Apple Watch pinged a phone that is not mine. Why, how do I replicate, and how do I avoid? Posted: 21 Jan 2022 05:02 PM PST This morning I used my Apple Watch to locate my iPhone. Swipe up, tap the phone icon, and somewhere in the caverns of my couch a phone chimes. After flipping cushions and digging through crevices, I disassembled the entire couch with a sawzall and found my wife's phone. (Which made me question whether my hearing was off, so I pressed the button again, and it chimed again.) Her phone repeatedly responding to my watch. I picked up her phone and started rummaging around again for mine. Decided to try pinging it again, and my phone finally did beep, in the kitchen.

Gather all windows of an app to one screen Posted: 21 Jan 2022 11:07 PM PST I have a two-monitor setup. I use one monitor as "primary" and other as "Reference" i.e I do active work using primary monitor and the secondary monitor has the windows that I refer to while doing my work. Over a period of time, multiple windows of the same app (Outlook, Excel, Word, PyCharm, etc.) end up distributed on different windows. I need a shortcut/ third party app which on a keystroke or option from a menu that "gathers" all the windows that belong to the current active app into a single screen (primary screen or an option to select which screen). Essentially I need the functionality of the "Gather Windows" option present in the Display Preference extended to all apps. I looked at this question: Trigger 'Gather Windows' programmatically (or other quick way) but that operates only on Display Preference window. If not possible out of the box, third party apps are fine as well. |
external monitor won't go full screen with MBP 13" 2020 Posted: 22 Jan 2022 02:03 AM PST I searched but couldn't find anything relevant. I have a 2020 Macbook pro 13" that's updated to the latest OS. I got a secondary external monitor AOC 24B1H 24" LCD Monitor (1920x1080 @60Hz). I connected it thru a vava usb-c Hub and found that the image on the external monitor would only expand to about 90% of the screen, leaving a black boarder that's not being used (but can be used). I tried connecting it thru a different Anker usb-c hub and still got the same issue, that the screen is only 90% full with there being a black boarder that's not supposed to be there. I even used a friend's monitor with both hubs and found that the same issue came up with that monitor as well. Both monitors work well with other laptops and connections, showing the image at full screen using 100%. I'm thinking it's an issue with the 2020 MBP 13" but can't seem to resolve the issue. I even tried to use switch res x and didn't manage to resolve the issue. Does anybody have any ideas? |
Posted: 22 Jan 2022 01:05 AM PST I have several encrypted APFS volumes, some of which have their passphrases stored only in specific users' keychains so they can unlock and mount automatically for those users. However, when the user logs out, the volume remains mounted. While this isn't strictly a problem (as I set mount points inside the user's home folder, and have volume ownership enabled), I would prefer for the volume to unmount and lock again automatically. This behaviour differs compared to mounting an encrypted disk image, which is mounted as a specific user (when viewing the output of Is it possible to replicate the same behaviour with APFS volumes, i.e- mount automatically for user with the passphrase in their keychain when they login, and then unmount (and lock) automatically when they logout? *I say normally, as macOS Catalina appears to have bugs related to cleaning up user processes when a user logs out, resulting in many processes still running for logged out users. This currently includes disk-image-helper, so it no longer unmounts automatically as it did under Mojave. I'm happy to accept any answer that replicates the disk image mounting/unmounting behaviour with the caveat that this currently doesn't always work for Catalina, on the basis that it should work if Apple ever fixes these bugs. Update: I've tried doing the following in a script triggered by launchd, but launchd's kill signal doesn't appear to reach it: The idea was that when the user logs out, If anyone is interested in using the basics of this script, note that you will need to have an entry in your keychain for the volume (you can do this by mounting with Disk Utility and choosing to save when prompted for the password), and must make sure that |
Logitech MX Ergo Scroll wheel doesn't work Posted: 22 Jan 2022 12:13 AM PST Whether or not I have scroll direction "natural" checked or not, when I use my mouse wheel to scroll nothing happens. I can scroll with two fingers on the trackpack but turning of the mouse wheel of the MX Ergo that I linked via bluetooth gets ignored. I have installed Logitech Options and can successfully map actions to mouse buttons with it. Is there anyway to get mousewheel scrolling on my MacBook Pro 2018? |
Is it possible to use an older Canon Scanner with OS 10.11 El Capitan? Posted: 21 Jan 2022 07:02 PM PST My Canon LIDE 600F scanner is old but still worked very well. When I upgraded to OS 10.11 my computer no longer recognized the scanner. Does anyone know of a workaround? |
Torrent clients for Mac other than uTorrent Posted: 22 Jan 2022 01:18 AM PST Can someone recommend a good torrent client for the Mac, other than uTorrent?
