16GB M1 Mac running slow after couple days of usage [closed]

After a fresh restart, everything is smooth. During the next couple of days, the problem gradually increases, until it behaves like I demonstrate in the video here.

How to get back optimised photos and videos after signing out and signing back in iCloud Account

Posted: 30 Jan 2022 05:08 AM PST

I've signed out from my iCloud account recently from my iPad, and then I signed back in. I have enabled the Optimize Storage option for iCloud, hence low resolution copies of some of my photos are stored in my iPad before. However, after the signout and the signin, the photos that were optimised are no longer in my iPad, but still in iCloud Drive. How do I download these photos and videos in iCloud to my iPad, preserving the metadata(location, timestamp, etc.)

I have a Windows PC with iTunes installed in it(but I doubt I have a backup of the iPad). The iPad is an iPad 4, iOS 10.

Thank you!

How do I get env variables to load on terminal startup? [duplicate]

Posted: 30 Jan 2022 04:05 AM PST

It should be noted that I am on MacOS 12.0.1 and I'm looking to add some persistent environment variables.

I have seen posts about creating and adding to ~/.bashrc or ~/.bash_profile but I'm not sure which is which. That being said, anything I add there only works after I use . ./bash_profile or source ./bash_profile once the terminal loads. I have also tried adding source ./bash_profile to either bashrc or bash_profile but that gives me a open too many files error.

Thanks in advance

Is there a way to force fullscreen on apps that have fixed screen sizes? or to define screen size when launching the app?

Posted: 29 Jan 2022 10:21 PM PST

Can be done on windows by making a shortcut for a program and adding something like " -screen-width 1920 -screen-height 1080 -screen-fullscreen 1" to target in properties, looking for way to force something like this on macos

tried apple script from here, Set size of window to exact pixels, and place via x, y coordinates only seems to work on apps that can already be resized

How can I get Apple Maps and Google Maps to *always* show speed limits?

Posted: 29 Jan 2022 07:58 PM PST

I'm on iOS 15.2.1, and I've enabled the display of speed limits in both Apple Maps and Google Maps. Both apps show the speed limit if I'm using them to navigate somewhere, but if I'm just using them to show me where I am while I'm driving around, neither shows me the speed limit. How can I get them to show me the current speed limit, regardless of whether I'm using them to navigate to a destination?

Only a fraction of the iPhone messages are showing in macOS Messages app

Posted: 29 Jan 2022 07:48 PM PST

I put some Craigslist ads and am getting a pretty decent stream of Messages on the iPhone. But only maybe one out of three or four shows up on the Messages on macOS - even for ones that I responded to!

I can't discern a pattern on which ones are sync'ing and which are not. Note that iMessages sync'ing is enabled in both iOS and macOS

Note that I have followed the instructions on this page to ensure they should be syncing: https://osxdaily.com/2012/08/09/fix-imessage-syncing-between-mac-ios/

Why are most texts not showing up / syncing to the macOS Messages?

Impossibly large file in trash that I cannot delete

Posted: 29 Jan 2022 11:45 PM PST

I have a 2019 Intel Macbook Pro on the Monterey 12.1 Beta (21C5039b), and there's a file in my trash that I suspect has been causing me some problems. Its listed size in Finder is 8.32 EB (yes, that's exabytes) and I know that it was not originally that large. It's an application, and the problem appears to be a single file within the package whose apparent size has ballooned to this ridiculous number. I have tried multiple techniques suggested for force deleting files, and all simply return the classic "this file is in use" error. sudo rm -rf on the application returns the same error. Does anyone have a more foolproof way to delete a problematic corrupted file?

I have tried sudo rm -rf, sudo find ... -delete, and checked that the file wasn't locked. I have seen some mention of potentially needing to disable SIP or rebooting into recovery mode, but I have not tried these.

API for user-space systems?

Posted: 30 Jan 2022 01:45 AM PST

With Apple in the process of discouraging the use of kernel extensions, I am unsure what options they are now offering for people wanting to create access to a specific file system.

In the past there was MacFuse and MacFusion, but with the current road map this would likely rule this out as a solution, hence curious how we should approach something like sshfs on Monterey instead of Big Sur?

Application on data connected Iphone, requests LAN access

Posted: 30 Jan 2022 05:38 AM PST

I'm on the latest iPhone (13 Pro Max) (iOS 15.2.1) and connected to my carrier's LTE network. I opened an application, which then requested access to my local network.

I'm wondering how this is possible and what this means. How can an application request LAN access when I'm not on my LAN? Does anyone know what might have happened?

For context, I'm connected to Bell's network.

I factory reset my m1 macbook, it still contained my name =(

Posted: 29 Jan 2022 07:32 PM PST

I followed this article to factory reset my device https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT212749

The article itself basically says to factory reset using this method before selling your computer. I did it. Gave the computer to my friend, my friend created a new account. Opened up terminal and now he sees friend@Coltons-Air.

Should I be worried about any other info being left there?

Did the Macintosh OS in 1997 really not have multitasking?

Posted: 30 Jan 2022 03:58 AM PST

In a notice in a local computer magazine from February 1997, they announce that "BeOS" is about to be launched for Macs (or already has been). It's claimed that this can "run several programs at once, so-called 'multi-tasking'" and that this is something that "Apple has never been able to do".

Is this really true? Could Macs in 1997 really only run one program at once? Or is this a misunderstanding? I vividly remember running multiple programs at once in Windows 3.1 on my IBM PC 486, yet "multi-tasking" was boasted as a feature of Windows 95.

Using iOS “Shortcuts” app, once I define a shortcut, how can I call it from the automations tab?

Posted: 30 Jan 2022 12:30 AM PST

So basically what I have done is define a simple iOS "Shortcut" that has a name ("Ask the cleaning lady to come"). It simply cues up a short text message to a lady in my contacts and asks me if I want to send it before it goes out.

That's great, now I just need to create an Automation (same iOS app, but the center nav option currently) that will run "Ask the cleaning lady to come" every Monday at 10AM, let's say.

Right now, I can't figure out a way to do this other than rewrite all of the instructions inside of the Automation itself. I can't call the previously written "Shortcut". Even worse, when the automation is run, it's only telling me "Do you want to Send Message?".

I should be able to have it ask me if I want to "Ask the cleaning lady to come", while not making me rewrite the instructions, and hopefully I've just overlooked that capability. It seems so obvious that you could call your Shortcuts for Automations run from within from the same app

I hope I've made myself clear, thanks for your help

Monterey VM reboot loop and kernel panic in VirtualBox 6.1.32 (on Apple host hardware)

Posted: 30 Jan 2022 03:32 AM PST

Environment

  • Apple MBA 2020 MacBook Air9,1 / Intel / x86_64 machine
  • Host OS: macOS Big Sur 11.6.2
  • Host OS Build: 20G314
  • SW: VirtualBox 6.1.32 r149290 (also tried on VirtualBox 6.1.30 r148432)
  • Guest OS: macOS Monterey 12.1 (21C52)

Purpose

  • Upgrade VM from Big Sur 11.6.2 (fully functional with VB 6.1.32) to Monterey 12.1.
    OR
  • Installation from scratch a Monterey VM. Both have same final result: instability.

After the first boot with Monterey, the VM suddenly HANGS AND REBOOTED BY ITSELF, reporting "This system was automatically rebooted after panic". It seems it enters in a "reboot loop" because after some time, even doing nothing, a reboot still happen again and again, like in an infinite loop.

How to reproduce

  1. Open VB 6.1.32

2a. Start a VM upgraded to Monterey
OR
2b. Start a VM installed from scratch with Monterey
OR
2.c Start a VM with "Install macOS Monterey ISO" as only Storage added to VM (NO other Hardisk present)

  1. Just wait some time...

==> You'll see in 0-15 min Guest OS HANGS AND SUDDENLY REBOOTS by itself.
==> Then the console message is: "This system was automatically rebooted after panic"

Logs and info

I unfortunately continue to note the instability of Monterey as Guest with VB 6.1.32, even on Apple Hardware!

All config data, and a video are at disposal to have an idea, as well as VB Logs (see attachments).

Questions

I asked to VirtualBox forum here topic 104998 with hope of receiving helpful feedback, which has not been the case as yet.

I'm primarily interested in sharing to the community and finding other user experiences.

Does the same or similar behaviour happens to someone else?
Has anyone perhaps applied a workaround or found a fix?
Has anyone ever gotten a really stable and usable Monterey guest installation (on Mac HW) with VirtualBox?

Added later...

I just came back a few days later, just for a minor update on this topic.

I was wandering if something changed with Monterey (Host), perhaps hardware resources are managed differently in Monterey, or that more generally something has changed.

So I just repeated the tasks with the same VM, so VirtualBox 6.1.32 with Monterey (Guest) on Monterey (Host on Apple hardware)

Environment (revised)

  • Apple MBA 2020 MakBookAir9,1 / Intel / x86_64 machine
  • Host OS: macOS Monterey 12.1
  • Host OS Build: 21C52
  • SW: VirtualBox 6.1.32 r149290
  • Guest OS: macOS Monterey 12.1 (21C52)

I unfortunately note that the result is still the same: VM do a reboot loop and kernel panic.

Time Machine System Restore: Stuck in "Preparing to restore "Macintosh HD"" [duplicate]

Posted: 29 Jan 2022 08:38 PM PST

I am attempting to do a Time Machine System Restore in order to revert to a previous OS.

I have the full Time Machine backup on a Seagate external hard drive. (Update: I also tried with a SanDisk external SSD, but had the same issue.)

However, when I initiate the System Restore, the utility gets stuck on the screen that says "Preparing to restore "Macintosh HD"." I left it on overnight--and 24 hours later it was still stuck on this screen with no signs of progress.

I am running macOS 12.0.1 on a 2017 MacBook Pro 15".

Is there an app that creates a "virtual computer screen" in a window? (I want to maximize iOS apps in it)

Posted: 30 Jan 2022 02:06 AM PST

iOS apps on the Mac M1 can only be maximized or tiled left to right. I was thinking, if you can create a "virtual computer screen" and "maximize" an iOS app in there and resize the "virtual computer screen" to your liking, then you can resize any iOS app on the M1 however you'd like!

Perhaps there is certain tiling software that is capable of this?

I'm currently looking into Moom.

Edit: Moom doesn't seem to work.

MacBook Pro 13” mid-2012 iSight cable port broken

Posted: 30 Jan 2022 03:04 AM PST

I accidentally ripped the iSight display port away from the motherboard on my MacBook Pro during a display replacement. I'm fine with working without a camera since the quality is bad anyway. The system boots up fine as far as I can tell.

However, I read somewhere that the later models require the iSight cable to regulate temperature, overheating if the iSight cable is not recognized. Is this also true for this MacBook Pro model? What problems would I run into during use if I didn't fix this problem?

Time machine restoration frozen at "Preparing to restore "Macintosh HD"…* [duplicate]

Posted: 29 Jan 2022 08:34 PM PST

I am using Time Machine to restore a new MacBook Pro 16″. I am using an encrypted HDD that's connected with USB 3 for the restoration.

However, since about an hour the Mac is frozen at the step "Preparing to restore "Macintosh HD"….

Is this behavior normal? How long should a restoration take? Or should I restart the Mac?

Is it possible to download full iCloud backup for iOS 13?

Posted: 29 Jan 2022 11:02 PM PST

I remember it used to be possible to download the full iCloud backup. However, after trying a bunch of tools (Dr Fone, syncios, easeUS, iPhone backup extractor) online that claims to download iCloud backup, none of them actually works. Is there any way to do this currently?

Function keys function toggle

Posted: 29 Jan 2022 09:48 PM PST

Is there any shortcut for toggling what funtion keys (F1, F2, F3,…) do? I sometimes want them to do the special operations (eg. brightness) and sometimes use them for toggling things in Pages (you can set shortcut for Style etc.).

I am looking for solution without pressing fn key for one kind of functions. I know I can do some scripting and make little AppleScript app for toggling it but that's the last solution.

I have non Touchbar MacBook Pro running macOS Sierra 10.12.6, if that helps.

Time Machine restore stuck on “Preparing <destination disk>” for more than 24 hours, how can I diagnose the nature of the problem? [duplicate]

Posted: 29 Jan 2022 08:45 PM PST

Recently I got myself into quite a pickle that eventually required I format my Mac's dual-SSD RAID-0 array and restore from a Time Machine backup.

Unfortunately Time Machine has spent the past 24 hours stuck on "Preparing [destination disk]" and shows absolutely no sign of progress. (The backup is hosted on a Time Capsule-emulating Synology NAS.) There is no information on what is going on behind the scenes, just a solid pulsing blue progress bar that doesn't even initialize and start creeping rightwards. Before the process began there was some cryptic remark about encryption needing to be disabled subsequently re-enabled as FileVault once restoring is complete, and I authorized the request to erase the destination disk.

Quite suspiciously it asks me to acknowledge disabling encryption every time I restart the process, which might imply that some latent form of FileVault is lingering, but I have erased the disk several times and each time explicitly instructed the system to format as JHFS+, unencrypted and case-insensitive.

(Keep in mind that "disk" in this context actually means RAID volume, as the two physical SSDs each host slices of the unified striped RAID-0 volume.)

I tried dropping into the Terminal because I vaguely remember the

tmutil

commmand but it is not present in the barebones toolkit of the macOS installer.

Can somebody help me figure out what is going on?

Thanks.

(Tragic aside: while in a panic and desperately trying to unmake my unbootable APFS-formatted RAID array which I created and that got me into this pickle, I accidentally nuked my FireWire-attached CarbonCopyCloner backup, so I'm stuck using Apple's blunt instrument with no information whatsoever.)

How to get into Windows 10 Safe Mode on 2016 MacBook Pro?

Posted: 30 Jan 2022 05:38 AM PST

I'm told I need to get into Windows 10's Safe Mode running under Boot Camp, but I'm on a Mac Book Pro, 2016 model, which does not have function keys at start up.

How can I force Safe Mode for Windows 10 on the most recent MBP?

Can Touch ID for the Mac Touch Bar authenticate sudo users and admin privileges?

Posted: 29 Jan 2022 07:51 PM PST

  • Does Touch ID for the MacBook Pro Touch Bar support elevating admin privileges in macOS?

  • Somewhat differently, can the Touch ID give sudo access in Terminal?

I wonder this because I'm considering getting a YubiKey which can do string input to password fields, but Touch ID for Macs may render it unnecessary.

Can you disable toolbar by default in Finder?

Posted: 30 Jan 2022 04:54 AM PST

In Yosemite, opening folders in a new window by default is extremely difficult. You can press CMD as you click (not optimal) or right-click/option-click the folder to open in a new window (not optimal).

The solution that seems to work best for me is to hide the toolbar whenever I open / create a new folder, because folders inside windows that do not have a toolbar will always open in a new window.

But the toolbar always reappears whenever I create a new folder.

So, ideally, I would love to have it ALWAYS hidden by default, and on rare occasions when I need it (to look at external drives, or drag an item into the application folder for example), I would shortcut-make it appear, ta-daam.

What does a .app file actually do?

Posted: 30 Jan 2022 01:21 AM PST

I'm brand new to Mac OS X (coming from Windows), and I'm trying to understand .app files. In Windows, we had executables (.exe files). If you opened one, your program would run, and any other files it needed were located elsewhere. In Mac OS X, as I understand it, these .app "files" are really more like folders that contain not only the executable itself but also other files that the app may need.

My question is, what exactly do these .app files do? How is it different from drilling into them and running the actual executable?

Recently I was trying to get an app to run on OS X. I finally got it to work (seems like JAVA_HOME needed to be set). However, it only works when I drill into the .app folder and run the shell script that starts the app. If I double-click the .app file/folder, the app just bounces in the dock for a while, eventually stops, and nothing happens (other than the fans spinning like crazy). So clearly the OS is doing something different when it tries to run the app from the .app file vs. directly from the executable within.

I'd like to understand what exactly the .app is doing that causes this app to not run so that I can work to fix the issue. FYI the app is Oracle's SQL Developer.

Time Machine stuck on "Preparing Backup"

Posted: 29 Jan 2022 08:40 PM PST

I have a MacBook Pro from 2009. It came with OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) but I upgraded to 10.8 (Mountain Lion).

A few days ago, I tried to backup my files on an external hard drive, like I have successfully done many times before and after the OS upgrade.

The status on the Time Machine menu at the top of my screen said "Preparing Backup", instead of counting up like it usually does. It stayed that way for a few minutes, then I got tired of waiting and stopped the backup.

Last night, I tried it again and let it sit overnight for almost 12 hours. It is still stuck on "Preparing Backup". What can I do to make the backup work like it did before?

I tried Googling for this problem and the solutions I saw said to either wait longer (without any clear idea of how long) or to exclude the Backups.backupdb folder from my virus scanner (which doesn't apply to me since I don't have a virus scanner).

Edit on 2013-5-23: Here are all the things I tried that didn't work:

  • I tried waiting for the indexing to finish but that didn't seem to help. I let my laptop sit for about 36 hours and the status still said "Preparing Backup".
  • I found a folder on my backup drive named /Volumes/Time Machine Backups/Backups.backupdb/Elias Zamaria's MacBook Pro (2)/2013-04-30-182726.inProgress. I deleted it and that didn't seem to help.
  • I tried verifying my main hard drive using the Disk Utility and everything seemed fine. I tried verifying the disk permissions and got some errors involving iTunes (I think), and I fixed them by clicking the "Repair Disk Permissions" button. I also tried verifying my external hard drive and it seemed fine. I tried the backup again and it froze like before.
  • I tried looking at the website that @lgsancho linked to. I found some things that may look useful but I didn't try them yet.
  • I tried running tmutil status, without the backup running and got this result:

    Backup session status:  {      ClientID = "com.apple.backupd";      Running = 0;  }

I started the backup, waited for the status to change to "Preparing Backup", and ran the same command, and got this result:

    Backup session status:  {      BackupPhase = ThinningPreBackup;      ClientID = "com.apple.backupd";      DateOfStateChange = "2013-05-21 19:09:06 +0000";      DestinationID = "8BC5795A-0AAC-4976-B960-ECCE8F48842C";      DestinationMountPoint = "/Volumes/Time Machine Backups";      Percent = "-1";      Running = 1;      Stopping = 0;  }

The backup has been going on for about 45 minutes. I tried the command and got this result:

    Backup session status:  {      BackupPhase = ThinningPreBackup;      ClientID = "com.apple.backupd";      DateOfStateChange = "2013-05-21 19:09:06 +0000";      DestinationID = "8BC5795A-0AAC-4976-B960-ECCE8F48842C";      DestinationMountPoint = "/Volumes/Time Machine Backups";      NumberOfChangedItems = 483816;      Percent = 0;      Running = 1;      Stopping = 0;  }

It looks exactly the same, except the Percent has increased from "-1" to 0. The backup has been going on for almost 3 hours. The status still says "Preparing Backup" and tmutil status gives me exactly the same result as the last time.

Here are the things that have been suggested, which I am reluctant to try:

  • Emptying my trash. I don't want to do this because it defeats the purpose of the trash and takes away my ability to recover files that I may have accidentally deleted.
  • Deleting old backups. I may try this if nothing else I can think of is helpful.

Edit on 2013-6-1: I am unaccepting my answer because it is happening again. I will get sick of rebooting every time it happens. I just want it to stop. I am thinking of considering deleting my old backups. This is what I see in the Console from backupd:

Brightness on bootcamp is totally off [duplicate]

Posted: 30 Jan 2022 05:37 AM PST

So i have a MBP retina 15" that has a Windows 7 Bootcamp partition.
The other day I noticed my screen was a little dirty so I took the screen brightness all the way down (fn+ f1) and did this while Windows 7 was locked.
I now cannot get the brightness back up.

I have hard booted and it seems to get back to the Windows 7 login screen. I'm not 100% sure if it's there but if I press esc, I can hear the Windows ting error sound. So it seems that i am there.

Is there any way to "reset" the brightness for bootcamp?
