Did the Macintosh OS in 1997 really not have multitasking?

Posted: 26 Jan 2022 11:56 AM PST

In a notice in a local computer magazine from February 1997, they announce that "BeOS" is about to be launched for Macs (or already has been). It's claimed that this can "run several programs at once, so-called 'multi-tasking'" and that this is something that "Apple has never been able to do".

Is this really true? Could Macs in 1997 really only run one program at once? Or is this a misunderstanding? I vividly remember running multiple programs at once in Windows 3.1 on my IBM PC 486, yet "multi-tasking" was boasted as a feature of Windows 95.

Is there any way to modify the titles of opened PDFs displayed on the tabs?

Posted: 26 Jan 2022 11:53 AM PST

I used to work on Chrome but I am considering to switch to Safari entirely due to the horrible battery efficiency of Chrome. I noticed when opening PDF files, the titles of tabs all appeared as links which unfortunately means I can't see any difference between them:

enter image description here

Here you can see 1 website and 4 PDFs opened from it with these horrible url titles that make it difficult to know which is which.

Here's how it looks on Chrome:

WiFi Parental controls for Private Address feature in IOS 14

Posted: 26 Jan 2022 12:06 PM PST

I have setup parental controls for certain devices on my WiFi and all works fine on the MAC address. https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT211227

However, in iOS 14 there is a new privacy feature which changes the MAC address every day so it is randomized.

Any ideas how to ensure parental controls on WiFi is setup to handle this?

Otherwise I have to update the WiFi parental controls frequently which is a non starter.

How to change the file icon inside the folder in the dock

Posted: 26 Jan 2022 08:58 AM PST

I have a shell script inside my Applications folder to open an app via terminal.
To make it fancy I changed the icon of the shell script to the app logo.

My issue is that it doesn't work inside the folder in the dock:

Not working: that is what I want to fix

But it works if I open the apps folder directly with finder or if I put it directly in the dock.

Is there a way to change the icon also inside the folder in the dock?

homebrew installed librdkafka to /opt/homebrew/Cellar/ instead of /usr/local/Cellar/

Posted: 26 Jan 2022 10:34 AM PST

I'm on Mac Monterey (Apple cpu) and I've installed librdkafka:

https://github.com/edenhill/librdkafka

using homebrew. It has installed to /opt/homebrew/Cellar/librdkafka/

However, online sources suggest the default installation path on ARM (which Apple M1 is?) should be /usr/local/Cellar

Because of this I get compiler errors that our makefile/compilation cannot find the librdkafka header. I assume Homebrew should have installed to /usr/local/Cellar?

What has caused this problem/how can i fix the default installation path and how can I fix the librdkafka installation path?

SIMBL Agent crashing frequently

Posted: 26 Jan 2022 11:03 AM PST

I just replaced a MacBook Pro running High Sierra with a new MacBook Pro M1 running Big Sur, and migrated my applications and accounts using Migration Assistant.

I noticed this evening that ReportCrash is using quite a bit of CPU, sometimes as much as 25% in both my regular user account and my admin account. I opened Console and saw that there were lots of Crash Reports from SIMBL Agent -- every 20-30 minutes in my user account and even more frequently in the admin account.

I removed the directories ~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL and /Library/Application Support/SIMBL (they both just contained SafariSource.bundle), but this didn't solve the problem.

Then I checked system.log, and every few seconds it's logging

Aug 29 00:11:05 Barry-Margolins-MacBook com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (net.culater.SIMBL.Agent[29138]): removing service since it exited with consistent failure - OS_REASON_OBJC | Objective-C garbage collection is no longer supported. Aug 29 00:11:05 Barry-Margolins-MacBook com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (net.culater.SIMBL.Agent): Service only ran for 0 seconds. Pushing respawn out by 10 seconds.

I tried killing this launchd service with

sudo launchctl unload /Library/LaunchAgents/net.culater.SIMBL.Agent.plist

and got the error:

/Library/LaunchAgents/net.culater.SIMBL.Agent.plist: Could not find specified service
Unload failed: 113: Could not find specified service

What do I have to do to kill this?

Uninstall Anaconda from macOS Big Sur

Posted: 26 Jan 2022 12:03 PM PST

I've some question about uninstalling Anaconda from macOS Big Sur. I was wondering if someone can please help me figure it our what to do. I followed the instruction on the official website (https://docs.anaconda.com/anaconda/install/uninstall/) plus some other guides, but I'm note an expert and I didn't reach my goal. That's what I did:

1) conda install anaconda-clean 2) anaconda-clean --yes 3) rm -rf ~/.condarc ~/.conda ~/.continuum 4) rm -rf ~/anaconda 5) conda remove -n myenv scipy *PackagesNotFoundError 6) conda remove scipy 7) conda remove scipy curl *PackagesNotFoundError 8) rm -rf ~/anaconda3 9) rm -rf ~/.anaconda_backup 10) export PATH="/Users/MYUSERNAME/anaconda3/bin:$PATH
  1. At the end I've deleted the application throwing it in the trash and emptying it.

I'm not sure I did the right steps, maybe you can give me some advice. However, I didn't delete everything because I have still a folder in /opt path, /opt/anaconda3. I'm sure another folder was in /user/MYNAME, but I think I've deleted it, because I can't see it anymore, even in the hidden folders.

Then, if I run

conda list

lots of other packages are still available:

# packages in environment at /opt/anaconda3: # # Name Version Build Channel _ipyw_jlab_nb_ext_conf 0.1.0 py37_0 anaconda-clean 1.1.0 py37hecd8cb5_1 anaconda-client 1.7.2 py37_0 [...] zlib 1.2.11 h1de35cc_3 zstd 1.4.5 h41d2c2f_0

Also, conda still run in my terminal as I see (base) every time I open it, here an example:

(base) MYUSERNAME@MacBook ~ %

I also post the content inside .bash_profil, because maybe It can be related with "my terminal (base) problem":

# >>> conda initialize >>> # !! Contents within this block are managed by 'conda init' !! __conda_setup="$('/opt/anaconda3/bin/conda' 'shell.bash' 'hook' 2> /dev/null)" if [ $? -eq 0 ]; then eval "$__conda_setup" else if [ -f "/opt/anaconda3/etc/profile.d/conda.sh" ]; then . "/opt/anaconda3/etc/profile.d/conda.sh" else export PATH="/opt/anaconda3/bin:$PATH" fi fi unset __conda_setup # <<< conda initialize <<<

I just wanted delete all the packages and files related to Anaconda.

Thanks in advance

Recover auto-generated Time Machine password?

Posted: 26 Jan 2022 10:00 AM PST

I've reinstalled my 2015 MacBook Pro recently. Before that, I've created a full Time Machine backup to my local NAS with an automatically generated password.

Unfortunately, I cannot find this password anywhere. As far as I know, generated passwords are stored in the keychain automatically. Is there a way to recover that password?

I cannot find it in the keychain management app.

Photos.app is missing the All Photos view / Photos sidebar button

Posted: 26 Jan 2022 09:44 AM PST

This question I think is best served with a screenshot.

In Photos, the sidebar for a new library, basically looks like this:

enter image description here

Well, for one of my macbooks, it just literally doesn't have the "Photos" option, which is surprisingly annoying given that I don't really need it and can still search by date and place anyway. But it's driving me nuts. It's not a hidden menu option or account preference.

Other mac just starts at Memories:

enter image description here

I've tried many things, and I've narrowed it down to the machine itself:

  • I can open a .photoslibrary on one mac, and see Photos.
  • Copy the exact same .photoslibrary to this other mac, and not see it.
  • This happens on two completely fresh blank formatted Macs
  • The .photoslibrary is not tied to any account.
  • Same version of Photos.app and Mac OSX.

Please someone know this. This issue does not exist on the web.
