Cannot pair iPhone with macbook using bluetooth

Posted: 15 Jan 2022 05:22 AM PST

I want to type on my iOS device (iPhone 12, iOS 15) with my macbook (2017, High Sierra) keyboard. I'm using Typeeto, which allows me to use my macbook as a bluetooth keyboard. However, the first step, which is to connect using bluetooth, failed. Pairing the macbook using the iPhone simply times out, while pairing the iPhone using the macbooj succeeded but only allowed network sharing and remains disconnected whatever I do (this is also not the supported way to connect).

How can I troubleshoot this issue?

Restore Documents folder

Posted: 15 Jan 2022 05:35 AM PST

I can't find any exactly similar situation anywhere:

After messing about with Dropbox for a minute, and then uninstalling it, including deleting the Dropbox folder, now my Documents folder has the "white piece of paper" icon and cannot be opened, nor copied files into.

ls -leO@d Documents

gives:

drwxr-xr-x 2 dth staff - 64 Jan 14 22:33 Documents

So it sort of seems to be a folder, but for example has not modification date. How can this be fixed, so it is a normal folder again?

What is the auto-save path in BBEdit 14?

Posted: 15 Jan 2022 02:18 AM PST

For BBEdit 14, what is the path where unsaved files are auto-saved (for re-opening when BBEdit is restarted)?

Many other[1] internet[2] sources[3] point to the path being ~/Library/Application Support/BBEdit/Auto-Save Recovery, however on multiple machines I use, my unsaved files still re-open despite the fact that the "Auto-Save Recovery" folder does not exist. I have even tried recursive-grep'ing my home directory for a unique string in one of my unsaved files, but I cannot find any match (grep never seems to complete, but that is a different issue).

"To improve reliability TimeMachine must create a new back up" leads to "there isn't enough space on xxxx" where xxxx has twice the capacity required

Posted: 15 Jan 2022 01:22 AM PST

So I clicked on the 'make new backup' button thinking it would solve the issue it was complaining about and now it tells me that "there is not enough space on XXXX" to do this.

My iMac has a 1TB drive, the NAS I am backing up to has a 2TB drive. It has been working fine for months.

I also have a second occasional back up to an external HDD with a 2TB and this has never had any issues.

What has happened and how can I fix it?

Partition drive becomes FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF after erasing Linux partition

Posted: 15 Jan 2022 04:37 AM PST

I have an internal SSD on my Mac and I have allocated 20GB of it for my Linux. I erased the 20GB Linux on disk utility and wished to free that volume for Mac main volume but the minus sign grayed out after erasing (formatting) the Linux volume.

When I restart the computer, it boots into GNU GRUB version 2.02 and gets stuck into a loop even with exit command. I try booting with option but there's only one available disk to choose from, which is EFI volume and it leads mot the GNU terminal.

I then boot into recovery mode and noticed the main partition is showing the FFFF… as contents and partition type. Please see the photos for reference.

I didn't backup (yes I'm dumb…) my drive before erasing Linux and really hope I can recovery the lost data on Mac. I don't care the Linux data at all.

I noticed there are some old questions similar to my problem but I'm unsure if the code/numbers are the same as most of them are few years old.

Thanks in advance!

Recents in Finder doesn't show any files on my M1 Macbook Air running Monterey

Posted: 14 Jan 2022 11:48 PM PST

I switched to a new Macbook Air M1 with Monterey. The Finder window's Recents doesn't show any files though I have just downloaded a few files, opened one, and edit-saved another too.

Finder's Recents is empty

When using my browsers (Safari / FF) and selecting files for upload, the Finder window that popsup also doesn't show recent files. What may be the issue?

Is there somewhere in the OS I can tweak what the default "Recents" shows in my Finder window? Am able to create a search, name it "Recent Files" and add it to Finder sidebar but the default recents macOS provides fails to work.

Changing the title of an alert button maliciously

Is it possible for a malicious developer to interchange ok and cancel in the title of an alert button? In other words, "ok" means cancel, "cancel" means ok.

Using cables, how do I mirror my macbook's screen onto an iPhone screen?

Posted: 14 Jan 2022 09:41 PM PST

It's nice that I can mirror my iPhone onto my Macbook using a simple lighting to USB-whatever cable, then open Quicktime but what about the inverse of this? I want to simply record my mac's screen booting up into recovery, or record it in places where you usually wouldn't be able to open up Quicktime and record your entire screen.

Do I need to use an HDMI cable from my mac going into an external monitor, then record the monitor or can I use a dongle and trick my mac into sending HDMI input to my phone? Simply put, it's like recording the screen of a virtual machine.

I have a Macbook18,3 running macOS 12.1 and an iPhone 11 running iOS 15.1. If you happen to bring up third party apps, try and keep it free

Boot Camp partition broken and can't be repaired in MacOS 12.1

Posted: 14 Jan 2022 10:50 PM PST

After a crash of Windows 11 in Bootcamp that doesn't turn off and cooked for a while in my bag, I lost the Bootcamp partition. I try to follow this question:

Boot Camp partition broken and can't be repaired in OS X 10.10.4

But probably I don't understand something. Now I will explain my situation. Device: MacBook Pro 16 1TB In Disk Utility, I don't see my partition

Disk Utility don't see partition

But if I right-click on the disk Apple SSD and go on to the partition, I can see 152GB Free Space where I can't create a partition.

Disk Utility Free Space

If I execute diskutil list I get:

TestDisk doesn't enter in write. I try to create a partition with gdisk following information of a discovered partition MSData, but was always corrupt. I'm waiting for the output of the TestDisk scan.

Why does "mail" fail when script is run by launchd?

Posted: 14 Jan 2022 07:18 PM PST

I have a very simple shell script which runs on an iMac (Big Sur) and gets UPS information from a NUT (Network UPS Tools) server running on a Raspberry Pi:

#!/bin/bash  log=/Users/mnewman/ups/ups.log  email="mine@mac.com"  echo `date` "UPS Check">> $log  bat=`/usr/local/bin/upsc apcups@raspsky | \  grep -E 'battery.charge:|input.voltage:'`  echo $bat >> $log  echo $bat | mail -s "UPS Status" $email  exit 0

The script, including the mail line, runs fine from the command line but fails when run via launchd. I have a number of other scripts run by launchd which include mail commands which run just fine, like this:

echo $ip | mail -s "New IP From Mr Muscle" $email

I can't help but thinking that this must be something simple that I'm overlooking, but I don't know what it is. I've tried using the full mail path (/usr/bin/mail) but that doesn't help. The launchd plist redirects both stderr and stdout to the log file:

    <key>StandardErrorPath</key> <string>/Users/mnewman/ups/ups.log</string> <key>StandardOutPath</key> <string>/Users/mnewman/ups/ups.log</string>

But there's nothing there or in the console log indicating why mail fails.

Any ideas? (Please tell me it's a simple typo somewhere.)

Yubikey stops TouchID from working

Posted: 14 Jan 2022 10:25 PM PST

I use a Yubikey Nano (USB-C) and it allows me to 2FA very conveniently.

When I plugged it in, my macOS gave me the option to pair it with my login account and use it as a way of logging in as well. I was happy to do that as it shortened the password at times when I needed to use it.

However, the side effect has been that my TouchID is no longer active, as I never get the opportunity to enter my macOS login password. And that is required for TouchID to do its thing.

I can trigger the password prompt by forcing scenarios that required TouchID to work (for example, triggering biometric auth in software like Bitwarden.)

I can also do the same by temporarily unplugging the Yubikey every time I reboot.

Is there a cleaner way of prompting TouchID to arm itself by asking me my macOS login password? A shell command maybe?

Increasing Docker resource limits

Posted: 14 Jan 2022 04:38 PM PST

I'm using Docker desktop on Monterey, on an M1 Mac.

Some commands in an Ubuntu-based container are running out of memory and getting killed by the system. I opened a second terminal window and launched top, and I can see the container running out of memory, then out of swap, and then the command gets killed.

I've already maxed out the Docker desktop settings at 16GB RAM and 4GB of swap. I'm happy to give it more swap space but the sliders don't go any farther to the right. Is there any way to let it use more of either of these?

switch back and forth between Chrome windows using Apple Script

Posted: 15 Jan 2022 12:39 AM PST

I'd like to have a script that gets some input on one Chrome window, switches to another Chrome Window to process it, and then returns to the original window.

I can get the Chrome window title from the original window, process on the second window, but I'm failing to return to the original window.

this is the working code to get the Window title:

my getCurrentWindowTitle() my returnToOriginalWindow() global frontApp, frontAppName, windowTitle set windowTitle to "" on getCurrentWindowTitle() tell application "System Events" set frontApp to first application process whose frontmost is true set frontAppName to name of frontApp tell process frontAppName tell (1st window whose value of attribute "AXMain" is true) set windowTitle to value of attribute "AXTitle" end tell end tell end tell end getCurrentWindowTitle

And this is the code bit which I'm struggling to tweak so I can return to the original window:

on returnToOriginalWindow() tell application "Google Chrome" to set index of window 1 where title contains windowTitle to 1 delay 0.05 do shell script "open -a Google\\ Chrome" end returnToOriginalWindow

Any insights on how to test, develop, fix this are really appreciated.

Cannot trigger an applescript by ssh to a network mac

Posted: 15 Jan 2022 12:25 AM PST

I face a vexing problem on my home set-up involving a Server mac advising a Client mac that a task (a back-up task) was successfully implemented. The purpose of this instruction is to trigger (through the Client mac automation software) the shut down of the backup disk power supply, to save energy. Both macs are running high Sierra and the Client mac must run the following applescript upon receipt of the appropriate instruction from Server (xtension.app is a home automation software having applescript interface but no shell script interface).

sPowerDownD2.scpt ("apple_script")

Tell application "xTension" execute script "TurnOffD2" end Tell

The above applescript, located in any directory of the Client mac, works when addressed manually and locally: I can trigger it (1) locally on the Client mac by hand on the applescript or (2) it works by a local manual command to a shell script located in a directory of the same Client mac the job of which being to trigger the applescript or (3) by the below line of command in terminal ("shellScript") .

osascript /path_to_apple_script/apple_script

To trigger the applescript from the Server mac (away from the Client mac), I have first tested a ssh shell script having root privileges on both machines

ssh -i /var/root/.ssh/jxxxxxx_rsa root@iMacdexTension.local

This script works when requested to execute simple tasks on the Client mac (like listing files seen in a directory), but fails when used to trigger the applescript above, directly using osascript or indirectly.

Example: any attempt to indirectly trigger the applescript through a shell script command fails.

ssh -i /var/root/.ssh/jxxxxxx_rsa root@iMacdexTension.local /path_to_shellScript/shellScript

ERROR MESSAGE ON FAILURE It fails with the error code : "execution error: An error of type -10829 has occurred. (-10829)

Second example: any attempt to directly trigger the applescript also fails.

ssh -i /var/root/.ssh/jxxxxxx_rsa root@iMacdexTension.local osascript /path_to_apple_script/apple_script

MY ATTEMPTS TO CORRECT

I have verified permissions on files and directories (tried different combinations as well)

I also have tried to correct possible privilege issues and, to do that, tried to use the recommended shell commmand

password "pswd" with administrator privileges

Whatever I do, the best I can get is the -10829 error message..

What could I do wrong ?

Thanks in advance for any suggestion or doubt.

Paradox's Stellaris won't run properly because it can't access a sqlite file

Posted: 15 Jan 2022 12:39 AM PST

Stellaris runs but gives this error:

Unexpected error occurred during database initialization. Please verify that you can access the file /users/gw/Documents/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris/launcher-v2.sqlite

Here's what I've done:

  1. I've set the permissions of this file and all its enclosing files (up to .../Documents/Paradox Interactive) to read/write for me/staff/everyone.
  2. I've done the same thing for the relevant files in /Users/gw/Library/Application Support/paradox-launcher/v2 and ...Application Support/Paradox Interactive/Stellaris.

I've just noticed that many files and directories in (1) and (2) have date-modified set to today. However, files launcher-v2.sqlite and game_data.jsn were not modified today, but rather have a date in 2021 around the time I bought the software through Steam. These two files are read/write for me/staff/everyone.

I've also tried turning off my Norton 360, which doesn't seem to help. So I'm mystified by what's causing these two files to not be read by the Stellaris game. Thanks for all answers, clues, or feedback!

Where are iCloud Shared Album photos saved in Finder in macOS Monterey?

Posted: 14 Jan 2022 06:00 PM PST

This question has been answered for older macOS versions, but not the latest release.

I am trying to locate where these iCloud Shared Album photos were saved to locate them in a backup so I can access the photos of an Album that was previously shared with me but no longer is.

What is the normal/base case configuration of system extensions found on Monterey?

Posted: 15 Jan 2022 05:25 AM PST

I'm trying to determine whether anything suspicious is going on with my mac.

I would like to know Monterey's typical system extension configuration for comparison.

  1. Upon initial install and typical use, what is the typical number of system extensions found in System Information\Software\Extensions

I am seeing at least 580 extensions. Is this normal? I was reading an online post that said the normal number was more like 15.

Also using terminal commands this article, I only apparently find 4 kernel extensions, and zero system extension.

  1. What are any and all folders that can contain system extensions?

I only know of the system/library/extensions folder, and the /Library/Apple/System/Library/Extensions/ folder.

  1. Can anyone attest to the existence of the following extensions on their system:

/Library/Apple/System/Library/Extensions/RemoteVirtualInterface.kext, Date Modified: 12/31/1969

Thanks.

How do I get touchbar settings on a macbook without a touchbar?

Posted: 14 Jan 2022 04:04 PM PST

I have a Macbook Pro on macOS monterey 12.1, and I have discovered through XCode.app that you can enable a touchbar that works as if you were using a 2016(4 USB-C/thunderbolt port) through 2020 model. I have also seen a post on Reddit where people are getting the option to customize their touchbar under system preferences > keyboard settings (Customize Control Strip) despite not having one.

How would I intentionally make the option to customize what options appear on the virtual touchbar (at least on XCode) under keyboard settings to show up, if not through: the command line?

In short; how do I get the 'Customize Control Strip' option on a macbook without a physical touchbar, but a virtual one?

How do I disable an app's display scaling for notch compatibility?

Posted: 14 Jan 2022 06:59 PM PST

I have a 2021 M1 Pro MacBook Pro with a notch at the top of the screen. The OS is macOS Monterey 12.0.1.

I've seen that there is a setting for scaling down the screen for compatibility with apps that don't account for the notch, but I don't know where this setting is. When I open TeamViewer and fullscreen the window with the remote computer's display in it, macOS automatically scales it for notch compatibility, meaning that the screen shrinks on the top, left, and right. However, the remote computer's display is 16:9 so it wouldn't go behind the notch anyway.

I would like to disable this compatibility shrinking such that I get to use the full width of my display for TeamViewer (or likewise for any other app). How do I do this?

Keychain Access is opening but will not display a window?

Posted: 15 Jan 2022 12:39 AM PST

I have a 2017 MBP. For the past couple of years, I've had a position that's provided me with a laptop, so my personal MBP isn't used much.

Over those years I've kept it updated periodically, but today I needed to get back on my old machine and open an old, secure note in Keychain Access.

The problem is that when I open the application... nothing happens. Well, it does open Keychain, and I see it in my dock bar. If I click on it's icon, I can see the menu at the top of my screen, but there is no window. When I right-click on the icon and go to "Show All Windows", there's nothing there.

What's happened to Keychain Access, and why can't I bring up the UI? Please note, I've also hunt-and-pecked the menu structure and I could see that I could create a new secure note but I can't open one. In fact, I did create a new one as a test, and after saving it, the UI never popped up. How can I get my Keychain Access back? Thank you.

Oh, and I'm using MacOS Big Sur (11.5.2 (20G95))

EDIT - Additional Information

One more piece of information that might be noteworthy is I have never setup iCloud for my Apple account, and I do not intend too. I do have an Apple account, and I use it to connect to the App Store on my MBP, but I'm not interested in syncing my data with Apple's data plan. I know it's quite useful for backing up personal settings and preferences, but as for the past many years, I've not needed it or wanted to give Apple that data.

I mention this because has something changed in the past 4 years where my data is now hidden/locked out and is tied to my Apple ID, rather than my login to my laptop? Is that fact that I'm not connected to iCloud preventing me from viewing my secured notes? If the answer is yes, is there any way around this, without cutting on iCloud?

Are messages included in iCloud System backup if iCloud Messages is disabled?

Posted: 14 Jan 2022 08:02 PM PST

With iCloud Backup, there are two ways data is stored: Apps Using iCloud and Backups.

The Backups portion is the equivalent of a full backup performed iTunes. Apps Using iCloud is app data written to the cloud storage, but accessible by apps and services outside of restoring your phone from a backup.

On iOS, it is possible to have your Photo Library backed up with the system backup while keeping iCloud Photo Library feature turned off.

When browsing the system backup options, Photo Library appears as an option but Messages does not. This leads me to believe that Messages could be excluded from the system backup.

If iCloud Messages as a service is turned off, are Messages data still included in the iCloud full system backup of the phone?

Is there a way to merge Safari history databases?

Posted: 14 Jan 2022 07:01 PM PST

Recently Safari had a glitch and wiped out my browsing history. I only discovered this after a couple weeks but had a backup that ran up to almost the day of the loss. I've restored the history from that backup, and would like to append the recent history since the loss. Is there a way to do that? Specifically is there a process I can used to take one set of backup files (History.db-shm, History.db-wal, and History.db) and merge them into another set?

Avoiding Spam attribution for video alarm notification in Mail.app

Posted: 15 Jan 2022 05:02 AM PST

I had been searching for years to avoid my own camera video alarm to be placed into spam by my Mail spam filter.

I finally understand the problem and have found a solution so I share it here.

The camera, an Axis model, can be configured to send mail by connecting to a smtp server.

The smtp server will send mail to an alias address that will be redirected to a final address.

Then the final address will be retrieved from the Mail app.

And in Mail app, the mail will likely not be stored online as the addition of images by these video will unnecessarily bite into iCloud storage plan (your mileage may vary)

The source of the problem is that Mail/iCloud won't allow you to force a message as "not spam" if it has decided otherwise.

My setup here is several MBPs backing up to an Apple Time Capsule. Backups are encrypted.

  1. I boot to recovery mode on the MBP I want to restore to (Cmd+R).
  2. Choose to restore from a Time Machine backup.
  3. Choose the Time Capsule in the list, and enter its network password. Works fine. I can now see the backups.
  4. Choose the particular MBP backup image I want to restore, and am prompted for its encryption password.
  5. Enter this, but it doesn't work. Wrong password, apparently. Tried repeatedly.

If I boot the MBP normally I can see in Keychain Access that the password I'm typing is 100% correct. No doubt about it.

I made sure to set the keyboard language correctly in recovery mode (it defaults to US English but I'm British). Still locked out.

I can browse the backup just fine when macOS is booted. I doubt the backup is corrupted but, like I say, in recovery mode I'm not even getting far enough to find out. The password for the encrypted backup image just isn't being accepted.

I've had this happen too in the past when I was utterly sure I had the right password, and I ended-up just abandoning the backup and starting with a fresh install. I can't do that here.

Anybody got a clue as to how I can access this backup? Why do I have a feeling I'm encountering one of those serious bugs that Apple knows about but brushes under the carpet?

Is it possible to turn off external displays when I close the lid of my macbook?

By default, when I close the lid of my macbook, the external display becomes the primary. It is annoying because I have to plug out the cable and charger to turn it off but I'd like that whenever I close the lid of my macbook, it puts the macbook to sleep and turns off external display? Is it possible?

How can I connect to one server using two user names - at the same time?

I am struggling to find a way to allow users to connect to two different shares on a server at the same time. It seems like it should be possible, but no matter what I try I am always forced to disconnect one user to connect as another.

I have tried using aliases like this:

afp://user1:password1@ServerName._afpovertcp._tcp.local afp://user2:password2@ServerName._afpovertcp._tcp.local

The first one connected works, and the second one ignores the name/password when connecting and just offers to connect as the first user again.

Is there a user friendly way to make this work?
