How to enable horizontal scroll in browsers on a mouse with separate horizontal scroll (logitech mx)? Posted: 03 May 2021 12:30 AM PDT It's really frustrating that in Safari, Chrome when i use the horizontal scroll it switches between tabs instead of scrolling the page. I've tried to go through the settings but found nothing on it. I would be grateful for advice. |
AirTag can’t be used recover stolen item if thieve has an iPhone? Posted: 02 May 2021 11:34 PM PDT The AirTag has a anti stalking mechanism, so than when an unknown AirTag moves with your iPhone you will get a notification. This would mean that a thieve with an iPhone will get notified that the stolen item is being tracked. The thieve can locate the AirTag with his iPhone and disable it. So for theft situations the AirTag seems to be pretty useless to me. Am I missing something? Is there a solution to this built in? |
How does AirTag calculates the relative position from an iPhone? Posted: 02 May 2021 11:19 PM PDT When looking for an AirTag, the iPhone shows the angle and distance to where the AirTag is located. The distance can be calculated from the signal strength. But how do they find out the angle in which the tag is located? Screenshot taken from MKBHD's Youtube video |
How do I force Photos to backup to iCloud when when it falsely says I don't have enough storage? Posted: 02 May 2021 10:37 PM PDT The Photos app on my Mac has refused to backup to iCloud for the past month, with the error "Not Enough iCloud Storag" - though I have 1.2 TB of free space on iCloud, with my Photos library taking up ~600GB of my 2TB plan. I even disabled and re-enabled iCloud photos on system preferences - though since I've toggled this setting, it now says 51,473 items have not been uploaded to iCloud (before it was only a few hundred items that refused to upload). My other devices have no issues syncing to my iCloud library. In theory the duplicate items shouldn't need to be re-uploaded, so I don't know why it is counting them. |
Activate FaceTime and Messages on Wi-Fi iPad with email address only? Posted: 02 May 2021 09:13 PM PDT Is it possible to activate FaceTime and Messages on Wi-Fi iPad using Apple ID's email address only? Someone has Wi-Fi Pad but doesn't have an iPhone. Although there is a phone number associated with the user's Apple ID, that phone number is not associated with FaceTime or Messages because it is not on an iPhone. When trying to activate FaceTime or Messages on the Wi-Fi iPad, the Apple ID email address is shown, but the Sign On option is greyed out and neither Facetime nor Messages can be activated with that email address only. |
MacBook Optimized Battery Charging doesn't work Posted: 02 May 2021 09:12 PM PDT I bought a M1 MacBook Pro 5 months ago and have been using it plugged in almost ever since, the battery is extremely rarely worked (probably once every few weeks). "Optimised battery charging" is turned on and working correctly for months, it would stop charging and be on this status "Charging On Hold (Rarely Used On Battery)". About 2 months ago, I had to take it somewhere for a day so I clicked the "Charge to Full Now" button, and optimised charging has stopped working ever since. The battery is always 100% charged, "Optimised battery charging" is still checked in System Preferences, macOS 11.3. How do I get it to work again? Note: "Charge to Full Now" may not be the cause, it's the most relevant thing I can think of that may have triggered the issue. |
How would I automate several delayed commands in AppleScript? Posted: 02 May 2021 08:59 PM PDT Let's say I want to automate the following tasks: Send the letter "a" twice every 2 minutes Send the letter "b" ever 30 minutes and send the letter "C" every 1 hour. If I make a loop with delays in it, then I won't be able to repeatedly send "a" - I can only send it once in the first 2 minute cycle, not every time. What can I do to put together all these commands? Do I just have to make several running scripts? |
How to install Mojave on a 2018 Mac mini that came with Big Sur? [duplicate] Posted: 02 May 2021 08:10 PM PDT I recently bought an open-box 2018 Mac Mini to replace a much older one before it dies. I wanted something that would run Mojave since I have some important, orphaned 32-bit software I need to run. Unfortunately (or not) the mini came with Big Sur installed and Recovery won't go back to anything earlier. My plan now was to install Mojave on a separate partition so Big Sur would still be around to fiddle with. I have been unable to do that. I used softwareupdate —fetch-full-installer etc. to get a recent, clean copy of the Mojave installer. I then used —createinstallmedia (with and without —download assets) to make a bootable installer on a thumb drive. It actually took me several attempts before it didn't give an error message (one or more of the BridgeOS packages couldn't be downloaded.) The resulting installer-on-a-stick boots, the apple logo comes up, and a progress bar starts. Eventually (maybe as long as a half hour) the bar gets to the end and it just sits there. No error messages, no nothing. Note: I did NOT wipe the mac mini's internal drive before trying to boot the installer. I'm willing to do that if necessary, but only if someone tells me they've successfully installed Mojave that way and couldn't do so without doing the erase. I took the fetched installer over to my 2012 MacBook Pro and it executed fine and I was able to install Mojave on a partition on an external drive and boot from it (on the MacBook Pro.) I also took the thumb drive bootable installer over to the MacBook and it booted fine; I quit before actually trying to install Mojave, but that at least showed that the installer on the thumb drive appeared to work. So, the installer's good and the thumb drive is good. I then tried making a Catalina installer the same way. That worked like a charm and I was able to install it on a separate partition on the mac mini so now I could dual boot into either Big Sur or Catalina. Whether relevant or not, I tried disabling SIP and Gatekeeper (spctl) on the mini, but that didn't help. Suggestions? It certainly should be doable since I understand that model Mac mini originally shipped with Mojave. I'm willing to completely wipe the Mac mini's drive if that's necessary, and guaranteed not to brick it, but I shouldn't have to do that, you'd think. There are some possibly relevant threads here that I've skimmed, but I didn't see any that described exactly this problem. I'm pretty Mac savvy, but when it comes to firmware updates and the T2 chip I'm afraid I get lost. So, let's restate the question. How do you install Mojave on a 2018 Mac Mini that came with Big Sur? (Either on a separate partition or replacing Big Sur.) You get extra credit if you can tell me why the installer hangs for me at the end of its boot. Has anyone else encountered this problem? I know you can "solve" it by using any of several Virtual Machine packages, such as Parallels, but that would be my last resort. |
Showing previously scanned page when scanning several pages Posted: 02 May 2021 07:49 PM PDT The scanner window allows us to combine multiple pages in a single PDF document. However, unless one clicks the Overview button before every scanning, the last scanned page is not displayed on the left hand side (the blank area in the image below). When scanning a big document, say 40 or 50 pages, it's easy to lose track of the progress (in that case, the solution is opening the PDF in Finder and checking its last page). My question is: is there any settings or any way to show the last scanned page, or is this a limitation of the program? As an additional info I'm using Catalina and AirPrint (but using the scanner's drivers gives the same behaviour, no difference). |
How to color code individual data points in line chart Posted: 02 May 2021 05:47 PM PDT This is a question about using charts in Numbers and color coding individual data points in a series. I have two series of data (blood pressure readings) that I plot in a chart. The series may contain multiple readings made at different times on a day, or there may be a single reading. Is there a way to color code the data points in each series to indicate which part of the day the reading was taken? e.g. 6am-10am = purple, 10am-2pm = orange, 2pm-6pm = blue, etc. The reason I want to do this is to distinguish between readings taken before and after taking medication. |

macOS Keynote, Pages, Numbers, and Microsoft Office apps will not open [duplicate] Posted: 02 May 2021 04:04 PM PDT From time to time out of the blue all these apps stop open. How to get all GNU tools on MacOS 11? Posted: 02 May 2021 03:13 PM PDT I already know about binutils brew install binutils , but it is missing a specific command I need: ld , as mentioned in this other question of mine: MacOS equivalent for Ubuntu Linker (ld) command? I am aware that MacOS Command Line Tools contains ld , but it does not feature the options and parameters that my specific case requires. Thank you. |
T2 Mac with empty internal storage won't boot from install USB Posted: 02 May 2021 03:43 PM PDT Every year or so I like to do a fresh install of Mac OS on my machines. The method I've always used is to download the OS from the App Store, create an installable USB with Terminal, boot into the USB, format the internal storage and then install. This has not worked on my most recent Mac, which is a 2018 Intel Mac mini (the only one I have with a T2 chip). It first wouldn't let me boot into the USB due to a security restriction, so I rebooted into recovery mode and formatted the internal storage there. Before restarting I attempted to restart to the USB with Target Disk Mode, but it wouldn't pick up my USB within about a minute of waiting (maybe I should've waited longer) so I just restarted it normally and tried once again to boot to the USB on startup. Every time I select the USB device on startup, it falls back to internet recovery mode. The yellow USB drive icon just instantly turns into the globe and prompts me to connect to WiFi. I've tried this method a few times but it sounds like any blip in the connection causes it to give up, and this has happened to me 4 times now. Is there any reason why a T2 Mac with no OS would not boot to a USB device? Is there anything else I can do besides retry internet recovery until it finally downloads everything in one go? Thanks! UPDATE: I did eventually get Internet Recovery working. See my answer below |

MacOS equivalent for Ubuntu Linker (ld) command? Posted: 02 May 2021 03:05 PM PDT I'm following some tutorials from 2015, and in it you run this Linker command: ld -T linker.ld -melf_i386 loader.o -o kernel.elf I get this error: ld: unknown option: -T I tried to replace it with ld --script=linker.ld -melf_i386 loader.o -o kernel.elf , but this error: ld: unknown option: --script=linker.ld After now looking through man ld , it seems neither of these are options. This tutorial was designed for Ubuntu, what would be the MacOS equivalent? If it matters, I am on an Intel Big Sur machine. |
Why does user authentication via OpenLDAP work everywhere except for MacOS 11 login and Time Machine? Posted: 02 May 2021 05:47 PM PDT I have an OpenLDAP directory on an Ubuntu server that I am trying to use for user management, authentication and various other goodies. I can use this directory and its authentication information to: - log in to Ubuntu machines
- mount NFS volumes from Synology on Ubuntu machines
- mount NFS volumes from Synology on MacOS 11 machines
- authenticate iOS and iPadOS devices with Radius
- authenticate on MacOS in Directory Utility' Directory Editor
- ...
So I have done something right. However, the following are things that I cannot do, and I would be grateful for any wise words or advice that would help me: - on MacOS use an SMB/APFS disk exported from another Mac as a Time Machine backup disk
- log in to a MacOS machine
(Edited below after a weekend of trial and error.) When I try to select the SMB disk from another Mac to use for TM backup, I select the disk, put in the user's name and password, and hit "Connect". After a couple of seconds the window wobbles to indicate that the authentication has failed. In my logs I see the following default 02:03:58.332679+0200 digest-service digest-request: uid=0 default 02:03:58.332710+0200 digest-service digest-request: init request default 02:03:58.340797+0200 digest-service digest-request: have no nodes with signing default 02:03:58.342099+0200 digest-service digest-request: init return domain: S-MAC-CW server: S-FMAC-CW indomain was: <NULL> default 02:03:59.323723+0200 digest-service digest-request: uid=0 default 02:03:59.334501+0200 digest-service digest-request: authentication failed default 02:03:59.334522+0200 digest-service digest-request: od failed with -1561745586 proto=ntlmv2 default 02:03:59.334815+0200 digest-service digest-request: user=S-MAC-CW\steve default 02:03:59.335592+0200 digest-service digest-request: kdc failed with 36150275 proto=unknown default 02:03:59.335618+0200 digest-service digest-request: guest failed with -1561745590 proto=ntlmv2 "steve" is the login name and the associated data is stored in the LDAP directory. "s-mac-cw" is the name of the machine I'm trying to log in to. The crux of the matter seems to me to be that he Mac is trying to authenticate the user S-MAC-CW\steve. There is no such user. S-MAC-CW is the MacMini, the domain is HOME so the Mac should be trying to authenticate HOME\steve. Noting the reference to NTLMv2, I have ensured that NTLM is one of the supportedSASLMechanisms recognised by OpenLDAP. I have also switched off SMB signing on the server and on the client. Unable to understand the instructions for building a symlink Posted: 02 May 2021 11:11 PM PDT I am not able to solve my problem using the instructions below: Change the default Quicktime screen recording cache in OSX Mojave to be on an external flash drive instead? I'm trying to change where QuickTime saves its temporary recordings. I'm pretty sure I have the symlinks set up correctly and still when I do a screen recording, the space on my hard drive decreases quickly and the space on my external hard drive stays the same. VirtualBox slows down when I move the window on a secondary monitor. How can I fix it? Posted: 02 May 2021 11:14 PM PDT HOST MACHINE: Macbook Air 2017 GRAPHICS: Intel HD Graphics 6000 1536 MB MACOS: Big Sur 11.2.3 and later VIRTUAL BOX Version 6.1.19 and later Intel HD Graphics 6000: Type: GPU Bus: Built-In VRAM (Dynamic, Max): 1536 MB Vendor: Intel Device ID: 0x1626 Revision ID: 0x0009 Metal Family: Supported, Metal GPUFamily macOS 1 On my primary display, every VM runs very well. But as soon as I move the window on the secondary display, every VM becomes very slow and unresponsive sometimes. If I unscale the resolution of the VM, let's say I set 800x600 => the VM becomes responsive even on the secondary monitor. If I close the laptop lid and use the second monitor as the primary display, I can use the VM with no problem even at maximum resolution (in my case is 1920x1080x32 @0.0) I tried different software to emulate VMs and the problem seems to be correlated to VBox only. MOST IMPORTANT 5) If I go to Display settings -> Arrangement and switch the menu bar to the other display, the second display becomes responsive and the primary becomes laggy. What could be the problem and possible solutions? I tried to unscale the resolution, use different settings for the VM (different video adapter, memory size, processors...) but with no success. Furthermore, I also tried to monitor the CPU, GPU, memory usage both on the host and the guest machines and nothing appears to be abnormal. I tried all the possible VirtualBox version macOS Big Sur compatible and even software to use the iPad as a secondary display and the situation is the same. Please, any help would be very appreciated! |
Whats the difference between backing up my photos on iPhone and storing them in iCloud? Posted: 02 May 2021 04:07 PM PDT If I go to settings -> iCloud -> manage storage There are 2 categories: - Backups (118 GB)
- Photos (18.3 GB)
In my backups, there's photo library (109.25 GB) I'm confused, what's the difference between storing my photos in iCloud and backing them up then storing them in iCloud. What happens if I click on " turn off and delete" the backup for my photo library? |
My keychain passwords gone after upgraded to High Sierra Posted: 02 May 2021 11:42 PM PDT My keychain passwords disappeared after I upgraded to High Sierra. I have 130+ entries made in secure notes of Keychain Access. How do I restore them? In detail: After upgrade to MacOS 10.13 from 10.11 my login keychain is out of sync and I lost all my 133 Password Entries I saved to secure notes. I can only temporarily restore them via Terminal commands. I see that my old key database was renamed to login_renamed_1.keychain-db. If I rename it to login.keychain-db and open /Applications/Utilities/Keychain\ Access.app and my Password Entries are there again, but everytime I log out of my User Account (both after restart or after logging out) a new file named login.keychain-db is created and my Passwords are gone again. Here is what I do in Terminal: bash$ security default-keychain "/Users/myself/Library/Keychains/login.keychain-db" bash$ security set-keychain-password "/Users/myself/Library/Keychains/login.keychain-db" Old Password: New Password: Retype New Password: This puts my keychain back in sync (password is set), but I still miss my PW Entries in secure notes. So I am also setting a Password for the old keychain database (lines beginning with '//' are comments, thus no Terminal input ): bash$ security set-keychain-password login_renamed_1.keychain-db Old Password: New Password: Retype New Password: bash$ sudo mv login.keychain-db login.keychain-db-out // renaming the current keychain-db to "*-out" bash$ mv login_renamed_1.keychain-db login.keychain-db // renaming the old keychain-db to the name of the default keychain When I open Keychain Access.app after this my Password Entries have returned, but only for so long as I do not log out or restart my Mac. Upon login or startup a new login.keychain-db file is created and the old one is again renamed to login_renamed_1.keychain-db. At this time the only way I can retrieve my Password Entries is to open each entry, copy the contents of the secure note in a Text file, which I would have to repeat 133 times. I would rather keep my old databes instead, as you easily may imagine. Does anybody of you has a solution for this? Thank you in advance for your patience reading this and – hopefully – for your help. |
Why one can Control+Option+U to edit a cell on Numbers? Posted: 02 May 2021 10:04 PM PDT It has been noted there are two ways to edit a cell on Numbers, Option+Enter seems to do the job. But still there is Ctrl+Option+U , why? |
Are there iOS apps for taking notes with Apple Pencil in color, grid, and with pages to print? Posted: 02 May 2021 09:07 PM PDT I am searching for an app, in which I can take notes during lectures. To be more specific I would like to find an app which extends the default notes app in the following ways: - Creating a color palette (eg. I would like to have darker colors, but it seems like I can only pick one color at a time)
- Changing grid size (I would like to make the grid a bit smaller, so it fits my handwriting better)
- Option for pages (Ideally I would like to be able to print my notes, but the $\infty$-paper cuts my handwriting in half)
Other features (like pdf annotation, text recognition etc.) are not important for my use case. The recommended apps I was able to test (Notes, INKredible, Nebo, Sketches, Paper, Quicknotes) didn't fulfill these requirements. Due to cost I could not test Goodnotes or Notepad+. I hope there is an app satisfying my needs, to specially to vouch for a paid app if that's the only fit for my requirements. Can any app do some or all of my requirements? |
iPhone XR's screen triggers other devices Posted: 02 May 2021 05:04 PM PDT Recently I bought a brand new iPhone XR. When its screen is activated by some application (not necessarily a GSM call or a Wi-Fi thing), it affects other speakers or headphones around it. All of them sounds exact same 4 "buff" like sounds consecutively. It reminds me of the way old mobile phones affected the speakers around them. Is there anyone knows why it happens and how to prevent it? It annoys me and I really need a solution. |
How to leave the Rename Printer dialogue without renaming the printer Posted: 02 May 2021 11:37 PM PDT In Catalina, when I try to rename a printer but then change my mind and try to close out of the screen, one cannot. Here's what I did: - Go to rename an existing printer (System Preferences > Printers & Scanners > Right click > Rename Printer)
- When the rename printer dialog opens, then change your mind and don't rename the printer.
- Or, perhaps just rename the "Location" and leave the printer field the same.
For me, macOS Catalina always responds like this, even when there is no other printer that has a conflicting name. Is there a way to cancel the Rename Printer dialogue once one enters it without renaming the printer? OR, if this problem does not show up on other people's computers when they try to replicate this problem, what might be causing my system to do this? This seems like one among many bugs in this frustrating release of the operating system. |
Determine source of ⌘⌥\ being an alias of ⌘C Posted: 02 May 2021 11:54 PM PDT TL;DR, somehow ⌘⌥\ has become aliased to ⌘C on High Sierra (possibly earlier). I cannot for the life of me determine the source of this. I first noticed this when invoking 1Password Mini began producing a system bell tone. I finally started to dig into the problem today. In the Keyboard preference pane, there are no conflicts with the ⌘⌥\ shortcut. So I disabled the shortcut in 1Password Mini. Tested, and system bell still sounds. When I attempted to re-add the shortcut, I get the following: To be clear, this dialog displays when I carefully type ⌘⌥\ — I am not typing ⌘C. So something has apparently aliased ⌘⌥\ as ⌘C. I have tested this further. If I highlight text, click on the Edit menu, and type ⌘⌥\, I briefly see the Copy item flash, and text is copied to the clipboard. Any ideas? This is driving me nuts. I've quit all other applications, including menu items. I've checked the Keyboard Shortcuts preference pane for conflicts. And everything has come up short. Update: I've installed Key Codes from the App Store, and even this application indicates I'm pressing ⌘C! However there's some slight differences that might provide useful information for debugging: ⌘⌥\: ⌘C: Update 2: As additional information, this happens with both an external Apple Wireless Keyboard as well as the internal keyboard on the MacBook Pro. Update 3: This is the full log from Key Codes, including modifier keys being pressed, up to and including pressing the \ key. It indicates immediately after the \ key is pressed (which it identifies as the c key), the c key is released and a modifier change is made as well (despite no keys actually having been released). |
Reduce the minimum iPhone volume (bluetooth speakers) Posted: 02 May 2021 06:01 PM PDT When connecting my iPhone (4S or 6) to a JBL Flip 2 bluetooth speakers, the minimum volume is too loud. Under that, it mutes. It is not a problem of the speakers, as the volume using another, non-Apple, phone, can be reduced much more. Is there a way to get finer decrements of the volume than those of the side buttons? Moving the slider suggests so, but it is difficult to control in such small space. I tried using a volume cap as suggested elsewehere, but there seems to have no effect on the volume precision. Any ideas? |
