Speed up dragging text on mac os [duplicate] Posted: 02 May 2021 12:19 AM PDT I want to speed up the time it takes for me to be able to drag text in chrome. I have to wait for 2 or 3 seconds to drag text, or else I just end up selecting text again currently. Is there an attribute that controls the time it waits that I can modify in the terminal?? |
if I delete private/var/folders/zz to free up space will it cause any problem? [duplicate] Posted: 02 May 2021 12:18 AM PDT I am very new to mac. I want to upgrade to the latest version of mac but there is not enough space in my mac. After some digging, I found there is a folder called private that is taking more than 38GB of storage. I have given the screenshot below. But some forums on the internet say, I should not delete the private/var/folders. I am not sure what to do. I have no important data to lose. Now should i delete this folder? If yes what is the correct way to delete these huge files? |
How to setup Disk Quotas on macOS Big Sur? Posted: 01 May 2021 09:44 PM PDT Is there a way to limit a user's disk space usage in macOS Big Sur? I found this article to setup disk quotas from CNET, but apparently it is not working anymore with Big Sur. There are two problems that I discovered:

What is the best method of syncing photos from iPhone to (windows) desktop? Posted: 01 May 2021 07:17 PM PDT My parents use windows and iPhone, and I have to run tech support for them. The windows photo import tool fails, because the photo's arn't really on the device, and apple lies to windows saying that they are available for import, so it fails halfway. If I install iCloud for windows, will it sync photos to the laptop via photostream? or will it continue to delete photos after 1000 photos? If photostream isn't enabled, will it start randomly deleting photos older then 1000 days that my parents take, without them understanding what is happening? or will it give some sort of warning / clean up prompt? Or is this likely something they are already familiar with as (mildly tech illiterate) users. |
Mounting Sparse Bundle on NFS Share Posted: 01 May 2021 05:37 PM PDT Background I have a Seagate BlackArmor NAS220 running Debian. I would like to use the NAS as a target for Time Machine backups from my Mac (2020 Mac mini M1). I have used disk utility to create a 500 GB sparse bundle disk image (HFS+J). I can mount the sparse bundle on my computer no problem when it is stored locally. I then copy the sparse bundle to my NAS. Problem When I try to mount the sparse bundle on my Mac while it is stored on the NAS (by double-clicking on it) I get the following error: When I double click on it again I get this error: Attempting to mount via the Terminal using,

Macbook Air 13" (2017) keeps shutting down Posted: 01 May 2021 10:19 PM PDT I'm aware this has been asked before, but didn't find for my specific model. Anyways, the problem started a couple weeks ago when the battery was below more or less 50%, but in the last couple days this worsen and it turns off when the battery is at any level below 80%. When I connect the charger and start again, it shows a battery level of 60-70%, sometimes the battery level jumps weirdly from one level to another, like 42% to 64%. I'm aware that the battery has had a lot of uses, my cycle count is around 740 cycles, and system report notifies "Service Recommended". Nevertheless Apple page says expected life for this battery model is 1000 cycles, and really didn't expect to start failing this early and with this extreme behavior. Here comes my question, will a calibration of the battery hopefully solve this issues? (until obviously it reaches >1000 cycles). Tried resetting SMC (as here), didn't work (but also I'm not sure how to verify that I did the reset correctly). I purchased the macbook new in march 2019 in official premium reseller (since in my country Apple does not have direct representation). Also I know that I might have to replace the battery, but I live in an EME country, and do not know if this is going to be very expensive, so in the short term it's not an option. Thanks! PD, here's my battery system report: If helpful, I noted that "Full charge capacity" changes sometimes dramatically when I check it from time to time (this is the same symptom as the battery level jumping from one to another completely different, I think) Exact model: MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017) Running on: Catalina 10.15.7 |

Keyboard Shortcut for exposing current Spotify track? Posted: 01 May 2021 12:33 PM PDT I've been using a keyboard shortcut for 15 years to know what was the current track playing, preferably by also displaying the album's photo. What was easy when only iTunes existed, has become complicated with me also using Spotify Now that I am on Big Sur, there is a possible shortcut to bring the control center where an Itunes track playing is present (but not Spotify), there is also a menu item that can be accessed by the mouse, showing the current media stream (including Spotify) but as far as I know, there is no keyboard shortcut for it. So what would you do, preferably using Apple OS native features, to get it done ? (a Keyboard Shortcut for exposing current Spotify track playing, preferably with the album image) Thanks |

Can I use MacBook Pro's 61W power adapter to charge my iPhone 12 Posted: 01 May 2021 09:37 PM PDT I have bought a new iPhone 12 64GB. But because now Apple has removed the charging adapter from the box, I need to buy a new one. Limit Time Machine size in Big Sur Posted: 01 May 2021 11:00 PM PDT In setting up a new Time Machine, how can I limit how much disk space Time Machine has access to? I am only interested in answers relevant to Big Sur's change to AFPS for Time Machine.
I have no reason to expect this has changed, other than hearsay this summer. I am asking this question because I cannot find any sources that directly address the issue of limiting Time Machine's size in Big Sur. The change in file format seems like a big enough update that it could change how Time Machine operates. I am looking for an answer that "definitively" answers how to limit Time Machine in Big Sur. Even if the answer is the same as in Mojave and Catalina, that is still valuable information. With Time Machine's support of APFS destinations in Big Sur, how can I limit the size of Time Machine data on the external drive? |
Is it possible to limit the size of an APFS volume? Posted: 01 May 2021 11:03 PM PDT My understanding is that with APFS, volumes exist inside containers, and the volumes all grow as much as needed, as long as there is space in the container. But I want to limit the space for the volumes. I have a 2TB disk with two volumes - one for Time Machine and one for general storage. I don't want the Time Machine volume to take the entire physical disk. Sadly, there is no way (in macOS 11 Big Sur) to delete Time Machine snapshots, so I need to limit its space by limiting the size of the volume. |
Is there any way to write an automation or program on an iPad except Shortcuts? Posted: 01 May 2021 05:07 PM PDT I would like to build an interface - a set of menus, for example - which presents information from an app or a webpage and allows me to read and interact with it in a different way than it is presented or accessible in that app or website. I am working on an iPad, so I am considering trying to write some kind of web scraping Shortcut which returns information from the website. I was curious, is there any other hypothetical way to create an automation, on an iPad? Could there be any tool which could override, control and automate the iPad, even if Apple has made it very difficult to do so? |

Sending mouse to different monitors for all sides Posted: 01 May 2021 06:03 PM PDT So I have external monitors set up like this (one vertical) And as you can see I am only able to send a mouse to another screen via lower half of each sides. I want to be able to send mouse not just the bottom half but upper half as well. Is there a way to this? I understand there is a keyboard shortcut approach but I'd prefer to be able to move mouse straight to another monitor. |
Podcast artwork shows in Apple Podcasts and iTunes but not on iPhone Posted: 01 May 2021 01:31 PM PDT I submitted my first podcast to Apple Podcasts. How to disable or change an application's shortcut? Windows installation through bootcamp and SSD error Posted: 01 May 2021 07:06 PM PDT I have a Macbook Pro 2017, and I've been trying to install Windows 10 on it for quite a while through Bootcamp, but I was advised to purchase an SSD (Samsung T7 500 GB). However, that also did not solve my issue. Every time I try to install Windows, the first time the Mac boots from the external startup disk, I am faced with a BSOD error saying 'your computer ran into an error, please restart'. I have tried multiple Windows 10 ISO's 1909, 1809, 1607, and the current version 20H2 available on Microsoft (30th October 2020). I also reset PRAM before every installation. To install Windows, I followed this 9to5Mac tutorial, as well as the accepted answer to this question. Can someone PLEASE HELP ME :((( |

iMac display goes to sleep randomly during use -- how and why? Are there event logs? Posted: 01 May 2021 09:07 PM PDT Over the past month or two the display on my old iMac 27-inch ("late 2009", running High Sierra 10.13.6) would randomly and suddenly go to sleep (sudden dead black) while in use (while typing, mousing, scrolling, etc.), but only about once a week or even less. The first time I thought it had crashed (having the display go dead black while typing is very disconcerting) and I power-cycled it. The second time I realized the system was still running, and I logged in remotely with SSH to find everything "normal". I finally realized I could simply wake the display again with Control-Shift-Eject and then wiggling the cursor or hitting another key. These past few days it started doing this very frequently -- every few minutes, or even more often for periods. At first I thought it might be a software bug as it seemed to only happen when using the browser (perhaps a GPU bug). Then, because it seemed OK for a short while after being idle for an hour or more, I thought it might be something to do with overheating, and I played with fan speeds (to the great annoyance of my ears). At first this seemed to make some difference, but I never really could make any strong correlation. But then I realized it was probably being put to sleep under software control as apps were fully refreshing their windows upon waking the display (just as they do when returning from the screen saver, for example). Finally I tried changing the Energy Saver settings to "Never" let the display go to sleep. This seems to have worked! Now I've also quieted the fans, and so far (an hour or two of constant use) I have not had the screen suddenly go black since. Does anyone have any deep understanding of how exactly the system controls display sleep, and whether or not there's any way to see logging of the events controlling display sleep? |
Dock folder shortcut: Is it possible to change the sort order of files in subfolders? Posted: 01 May 2021 02:03 PM PDT I have a shortcut to a folder in the Dock. Here is how this folder is configured: This folder contains several subfolders. When I enter a subfolder by hovering the mouse cursor over a subfolder title, the files in the subfolder are, by default, listed in ascending order by Name. Changing the "Sort by" value in the above context-menu only affects the order of the items in the folder itself, not those in its subfolders. Is it possible to change the ordering method of the files in the subfolders (e.g., to descending order by Name or Date Modified)? Note: This question is strictly concerned with the order of files in the Dock pop-up mini-window in List view, not a proper Finder.app window. OS X El Capitan, version 10.11.6. |
How do I get Apple Hardware Test working on a refurbished Mac? Posted: 01 May 2021 07:38 PM PDT I recently picked up a refurbished "Unibody" Late 2009 MacBook, which arrived with a fresh Sierra (10.12) install. After going through the first time setup, I immediately upgraded RAM and HD. After that, I thought I'd fire up Apple Hardware Test for its memory test, since Apple describes Hardware Test as "built into your Mac" for this model (https://support.apple.com/kb/PH25696?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_IN). However, holding down d during a reboot just left me with a normal Mac OS X session. How do I get Apple Hardware Test working on this machine? |

error -36 on a brand new samsung 850 ssd drive Posted: 01 May 2021 09:37 PM PDT I after some advnature (as described here) I have successfully booted osx installation from a brand new SSD by Samsung (EVO 850). I am running osx 10.11.6 (trim is not enabled). My Mac is mid 2009 macbook pro. When installing, I have restored a Time Machine state. Now, whenever I try to access large files on the disk, they fail to be copied with an error message -36: saying that source file "cannot be read or written". I am able to successfully copy files from the backup disk or from internet to the SSD, but once there, they cannon be copied further (they can be moved, but this is just bookkeeping operation, no data is read then). So it seems the problem occurs when the OS tries to actually read something besides FS entries. The error persists both in Finder and Terminal. The SSD is brand-new. It has uptime of 7 hrs, and 41 power cycles. It comes clean with "disk utility" - no problems detected, but I guess this tool does not perform disk read/write integrity test, just checks FS entries. Am I right? So what options do I have here? |
Chrome prevents Macbook from sleeping Posted: 01 May 2021 12:46 PM PDT Chrome prevents my Macbook from sleeping. See screenshot: Some websites say it might be due to a chrome extension, but I've installed no new extensions in the last two weeks (I've only had this problem for two weeks). Neither did I update OSx, Chrome, or the Energy Saver settings. How do I fix this? |
No sound except with Headphones on MBA Posted: 01 May 2021 05:24 PM PDT The sound output is not stuck in digital mode, actually the output is stuck in "headphones mode". It works when the headphones are plugged in. Plugging in or replugging the headphones does not change mode from headphones to digital, it stays on headphones. It does not solve the problem either. There is no red light. Instead there is a white light. Blowing at it failed to work. |

cmd-tab behavior on Mavericks with multiple displays Posted: 01 May 2021 12:43 PM PDT I have a MacBook with Cinema Display, I have my dock on the MacBook screen side and my menubar is set to Cinema Display. In 10.8 this worked well, when I pressed cmd-tab to switch apps the task switcher would come up on the "main" Cinema Display. In 10.9, however, it's always on the MacBook's screen, very annoying. Is there a setting I've missed? |
