Problem on keyboard function keys Posted: 16 May 2022 01:40 AM PDT My keyboard is from iqunix. The function keys on my keyboards(e.g. F1, F2) is remapped to media keys, so when I press F11 my volume is turned up, although I wanted to open up the developer console in my browser. Even if I am pressing FN+F12 it's still turning up the volume. I have also tried to press FN + Caps Lock . It doesn't work for me neither. |

Which Fedora should I use on VirtualBox? Write a bootable image of system into an internal disk, without removing a data partition Posted: 16 May 2022 02:01 AM PDT I have an internal HDD like partitioned like this: [---- 100 GB unused ----|----------- 800 GB data ------------] - 100 GB of unused or "to be deleted" old partitions
/dev/sdb1 , /dev/sdb2 , /dev/sdb3 - 800 GB NTFS important data partition
/dev/sdb4 (I have backup) I also have a 10GB ubuntu.img image of a disk containing Ubuntu installed (it is not an "installer disk" image). This image can be run from VirtualBox, or can be written to an external USB HDD with dd if=ubuntu.img of=/dev/sdc , and then I can successfully boot this external USB HDD. When I start this image with VirtualBox, inside the VM, lsblk says this: Question: how to write this image ubuntu.img into my internal HDD (on /dev/sdb? sdb1?) such that: - I can boot on it
- /dev/sdb4 is not erased
? On the one hand, if I dd if=ubuntu.img of=/dev/sdb , the partition table will probably be erased and /dev/sdb4 will be lost. On the other hand, if I dd if=ubuntu.img of=/dev/sdb1 , it probably won't be bootable, is that correct? |
Language icon is missing from the Cinnamon settings! (Debian 11 installed with Cinnamon) Posted: 16 May 2022 12:36 AM PDT Working in a multicultural environment, I recently needed to switch the language displayed in my computer GUI (Debian 11 installed with Cinnamon). And I did not manage to do it easily! I have been searching around for a while to find out how to add an additional language to my new Cinnamon installation. Obviously, reading from the internet, there should be a Languages icon in Cinnamon System Settings panel. But this icon does not exist on my installation. Where did it go? How can I have it back? The workaround I used: - Close the Cinnamon session and open a Gnome session
- Go to the Gnome system settings, choose the Country and Language menu, and select the language.
- Then go back to a Cinnamon session

2>&1 | tee cannot get full output log Posted: 16 May 2022 01:27 AM PDT I'm using the timeout command to call my application in timeout duration. And I also use 2>&1 | tee to write the log in my application to a log.txt file. The command: timeout 20 my_application 2>&1 | tee log.txt But when the timeout happens, I cannot see the full log in the terminal and in log.txt also. Then I tried to call only: timeout 20 my_application (without 2>&1 | tee.log ), and I can see the full log from my_application on the terminal. Can you help explain why this happens, and how can I fix it? Thanks so much |
How to turn the screen total/pitch black in GNOME? Posted: 16 May 2022 03:14 AM PDT Use case / Problem I wanna hear music in the night with my laptop/device and as such I want the screen to be black, as I don't want to get dazzled in the night. Tried workarounds/"solutions" As such, …: - I cannot put it into standby for obvious reasons (music playing stops)
- I cannot close the lit without going into standby (I know I can adjust this in
gnome-tweaks , but really… I don't wanna disable and re-enable this each time I want to do this, because I usually want to keep the default and very sensible behavior of getting into standby when the lid is closed) - I could try any physical solutions to the problem, like closing the lid partially, wearing sunclasses or eye masks or placing the device facing me away or even putting some light-blocking object between me and the device.
However, this would cause other downsides like needing to reverse the workaround when you want to pause the music or skip a track or so (access to keyboard could be limited in these scenarios). Also, it's really inconvenient. (but closing the lid is e.g. sth. I instinctively do as a workaround, and it's not perfect due to the light reflection.) - One solution that partially works, even though it may not be obvious at first, is: Lock your screen! This does not only prevent from cat pictures (or similar) appearing on your screen, but also actually fade the window to black in recent GNOME versions. The problems with this solution/approach are:
- Any keypress will wake the screen up, even if it is just the keyboard button for pausing music or skipping a track.
- Worse, any notification will wake your screen up. (Again I could circumvent this by enabling "Do not disturb" mode, but really, do I want to do that just for that? Again very inconvenient.)
- Also, there may the inevitable "This system will go to standby soon" notification (at least in GNOME 41), which will wake-up your screen,
- Now, worst though, after your screen woke up once and you are now at the login/lock screen, if you wait the screen will not turn black again automatically. The only workaround I found for this is logging in and, yet again, re-locking it. Do I need to say another time this usability s………eems to be not the best?
An "old" solution I had was one: - Another laptop I used had a special Fn button, which would just turn the whole screen black. It looked as if it was not a hardware thing, but somehow GNOME really interpreted that key correctly.
Now, I desperately miss that key or that feature in general. Solution wanted I want to have a keyboard shortcut/hotkey or something equally easily accessible that just turns the screen black. Pitch black, so I am not dazzled. It, thought, must not turn the device into standby. (Music players usually have a lock on that, so GNOME won't do that by default anyway, but one could always trigger standby manually of course.) How can I do that? System GNOME 42.1 Fedora 36 (Silverblue) Cross-posed to Fedora Ask. Feel free to submit your answer there, too, if you have one. |
Transfer large files with rsync Posted: 16 May 2022 01:07 AM PDT I am currently trying to optimize an transfer process from an internal disk to a USB drive. The files that I am trying to transfer are in the range of 10-30 GB. The USB mounted disk is with a USB 3 interface and a Samsung solid state disk. I would like to have progress of the complete transfer, so I can monitor the process. Currently I have attempted these commands: rsync -AW --info=progress2 --no-compress /home/user/rosbags/*.bag /media/upload_disk/ rsync -aWAXE --info=progress2 --no-compress /home/user/rosbags/*.bag /media/upload_disk/ The transfer works but the speed is rather slow after a few seconds. It starts at 300-400MB/s and after a few seconds ends up at 30-50MB/s. I have attempted to find a way to set blocksize for rsync, but this does to seem to work locally. What other methods could I attempt to speed up the process ? |
Rocky 8.5 - Alternate repo for sshpass, removed from EPEL Posted: 16 May 2022 02:31 AM PDT BACKGROUND: I am developing a Kickstart file to install Rocky (8.5), and I have included EPEL as a repo in order to install Ansible. Yesterday, when trying to install from my Kickstart file, I received a message that "nothing provides sshpass needed by ansible-2.9.27-1.el8.noarch" A quick search yielded this page: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2020679 Since Red Hat just released RHEL 8.6 a few days ago, it seems that sshpass was removed from EPEL. Since Rocky will naturally be a little behind RHEL, I am expecting that I will not be able to get this package from Rocky's repos until they release 8.6 in a week or two or whenever. QUESTION: Until Rocky 8.6 is released, what repo should I add (temporarily) to my Kickstart file to get past this dependency issue? |
Copy on write for directories? Posted: 16 May 2022 02:06 AM PDT Some file-systems notably XFS and btrfs support Copy on Write at block level for files. This is done by reflinking where the underlying blocks are shared between files until they are modified. Since a directory is essentially an associative array mapping file names to inodes it should be straight forward to do something similar for directories. Have any filesystems been developed which can support this on Linux (or any other Unix-like system)? Presumably it would need kernel support just like use reflinking does. That is a call like copy_file_range() which works with directories. Is anyone actively working on this? Is it simply that no-one has wanted to do it yet or is there any reason why this is a bad idea or unecessary? Are there any particular technical obstacles that need to be overcome? See also https://serverfault.com/questions/129969/is-there-a-way-to-create-a-copy-on-write-copy-of-a-directory which does not really answer this question. |

unix pass - passing passphrase with the usage of PASSWORD_STORE_GPG_OPTS Posted: 16 May 2022 03:32 AM PDT Here's info on the pass: https://www.passwordstore.org My key point is, that I would like to pass the passphrase key at the command line. However, the topic and solutions related to this question that I could find, are not working in my case. When I have examined the code of Pass, I have found a parameter called PASSWORD_STORE_GPG_OPTS. As far as I can see, it should be possible to use it to pass --pinentry-mode=loopback --passphrase "<password_here>" to gpg executed by Pass. The code fragment that executes it is here: #Line 9 GPG_OPTS=( $PASSWORD_STORE_GPG_OPTS "--quiet" "--yes" "--compress-algo=none" "--no-encrypt-to" ) #(...) #Line 387 pass="$($GPG -d "${GPG_OPTS[@]}" "$passfile" | $BASE64)" || exit $? However, for some reason, this is not working. So the question is, would it be possible to use this parameter to pass passphrase to gpg and use pass without prompt? If not, then are there any other ways to do so? EDIT: As @they suggested, here is info on what I'm doing: Set variable: export PASSWORD_STORE_GPG_OPTS="--pinentry-mode=loopback --passphrase '<password_goes_here>'" Remark: Password contains only small and big letters and digits - no whitespaces nor other characters. Then, execute the pass with: pass address/to/some/password Outcome is: gpg: decryption failed: No secret key |

How can I block access to certain websites on Ubuntu? Posted: 16 May 2022 01:00 AM PDT I would like to block certain websites to improve productivity and avoid distraction. I have found BlockSite (Brave browser extension) to be a very good tool but it has one fatal flaw in that it can be disabled very easily via the taskbar at the top. I would like a more sturdy solution. I initially used the method outlined here but I found that this method did not emulate the functionality of BlockSite, the latter of which would block every page on Facebook or Twitter (for example), this method of editing the /etc/hosts file only ended up blocking twitter.com and not all pages associated with Twitter (I could still access, for example, Joe Biden's or Donald Trump's Twitter pages) What is the best way to completely block certain websites on ubuntu in a way that makes it difficult to unblock them? |

All TLS requests giving Peer's certificate issuer has been marked as not trusted by the user Posted: 16 May 2022 02:01 AM PDT When I try an https request to google.com, I just recently started seeing [root@ip-172-31-47-76 ~]# curl -I -v https://google.com * Rebuilt URL to: https://google.com/ * Trying 216.58.193.78... * TCP_NODELAY set * Connected to google.com (216.58.193.78) port 443 (#0) * Initializing NSS with certpath: sql:/etc/pki/nssdb * CAfile: /etc/pki/tls/certs/ca-bundle.crt CApath: none * Server certificate: * subject: CN=*.google.com,O=Google Inc,L=Mountain View,ST=California,C=US * start date: Feb 20 14:17:23 2018 GMT * expire date: May 15 14:08:00 2018 GMT * common name: *.google.com * issuer: CN=Google Internet Authority G2,O=Google Inc,C=US * NSS error -8172 (SEC_ERROR_UNTRUSTED_ISSUER) * Peer's certificate issuer has been marked as not trusted by the user. * stopped the pause stream! * Closing connection 0 curl: (60) Peer's certificate issuer has been marked as not trusted by the user. More details here: https://curl.haxx.se/docs/sslcerts.html This is affecting my ability to update the system as yum update requests fail as well. I've tried reimporting my certificates using the instructions on this page: https://access.redhat.com/solutions/1549003. I've also tried manually adding Google cert using the instructions here: https://curl.haxx.se/docs/sslcerts.html. Neither worked. I'm not sure if it's related but I tried troubleshooting further with the certutil utility but that can't be run [root@ip-172-31-47-76 ~]# certutil certutil: /usr/local/firefox/libnss3.so: version `NSS_3.30' not found (required by certutil) Not quite sure what happened here but I would appreciate any help. This is using an Amazon Linux image. |

How to check umask for all users under Linux? Posted: 16 May 2022 03:20 AM PDT Under AIX I can check the umask for all users with: cut -d : -f 1 /etc/passwd | while read ONELINE; do lsuser -a umask "$ONELINE"; done But how can I check the umask setting for all users under Linux? (su to every user and then umask command? Are there any better ways for it?) UPDATE1: It's not the best to su to all users, because on some RHEL servers the default shell for a few user is halt/shutdown..: shutdown:x:6:0:shutdown;asdf;asdf;F:/sbin:/sbin/shutdown so if I su to the user... then the server shuts down? UPDATE2: I created a bounty for a non-su based answer. |
