Posted: 20 May 2022 06:17 AM PDT a few weeks ago I got a notification on my iPhone that someone from Germany was trying to access and log in to my apple iCloud account and I think he was successful in figuring out my password, thankfully I had Two-Factor Authentication on so he couldn't do anything. So does Apple have a history of login attempts with information like(IP, Time, City, device type) because I may have very good idea of who that person was. I know this information maybe irrelevant but my password is very complex and lengthy not anyone can find it and the thing is when I was in Germany I got into a beef with some techy guy (a computer scientist and a web developer) |
Music App on macOS 12 does not save settings when closed Posted: 20 May 2022 06:20 AM PDT I recently upgraded my older iMac 2015 to macOS 12. Now I noticed the Music App does not save any settings I made while using Music, i.e. if I change the width of the left column this setting is lost when closing Music, the column is the same size as at last start. Or the last selected section/playlist will be lost too, Music starts at the same point every time on open. I assume there is a settings file or database where all those settings will be saved on closing the app, but I am not able to find this file. Is there anything I can do to have Music save the settings? Thanks in advance for all your ideas! |
Intermittent SMB/AFP connection issues after switching company network to VLANs Posted: 20 May 2022 06:46 AM PDT I need a little bit of help to troubleshoot our company network. We have 10+ Macs (different versions) and they are connected to a Mac Server providing a SMB/AFP network share. A few weeks ago, we enhanced our network and split some things up into different VLANs. The network of the Mac Server is now placed in a VLAN, keeping the same subnet. The VLAN is totally managed by switches/access points/firewall. Macs can connect to the server using an internal domain name like But, from time to time, users complain they cannot see the content of some folders and they need to reconnect or wait a few minutes until they can work again. Sometimes users also report that they don't see a file that other user put on the server a few minutes ago. It needs a network reconnect for the SMB/AFP to work again. These problems didn't happen before we split the network up in several VLANs - but the change shouldn't affect the connection between Macs and Server because they are in the same VLAN and subnet. The same problem occurs via SMB and AFP (so I think it isn't a problem directly with the network share ... but cannot tell it 100% for sure). I wasn't able to reproduce the issue. Everytime I tested it, it worked fine (via Wi-Fi or cable). I got one chance to make some tests when a user that was experiencing the problem told me directly. I made some pings to the Mac server and it turned out that, when this happens, the ping to the server takes around 20 to 200 ms and sometimes packets are lost. I don't know what the culprit is, because everytime I test it on different Macs or Windows/Linux computers everything works fine. Does someone have an idea where I can look for further troubleshooting or has someone had a similar problem and solved it? I would be very thankful for some hints that help solve this problem. Thank you for your help and best regards, Katharina |
How do I view the TLS certificate in iOS 15 Safari? Posted: 20 May 2022 03:39 AM PDT How do I view the TLS certificate in iOS 15 Safari? I tried every button on the tool bar, and still couldn't find the view cert option. |
Remove specific files from iCloud Posted: 20 May 2022 06:03 AM PDT I was just wondering how I can remove certain big folders from my iCloud Drive and have it only save on my Mac. I've got some folders filled with footage that's like 800gb that I don't need taking up iCloud space, but still need it saved on my desktop. appreciate any help, thanks. |
How to repair Time Machine error Failed to mount with dissenter { DAStatus = 49218; } Posted: 20 May 2022 04:07 AM PDT All of a sudden, my Time Machine backup, which is on a NAS, would not work any more. In the log, I find Time Machine retries a few times, then eventually gives up with Trying to mount the sparsebundle manually with What's the problem and is there any way to repair the backup? It's an M1 Macbook Pro on macOS Monterey 12.4 if that matters. Note: this question seems similar, but I think it's different as it refers to an external drive, not an image. |
Setup a Trojan VPN on macOS [closed] Posted: 20 May 2022 02:20 AM PDT I have this VPN URL with Trojan protocol: And on Android devices, I just paste it to Igniter client app and it connects, very simple. But I don't know how to connect to it on macOS. I read this one, and followed the instructions but failed to connect. Also tried some VPN clients like FortiClient, OpenVPN, Passepartout, and Outline, and none of them supports Trojan. How can I set it up manually? VPN client suggestions that support Trojan are also welcome. |
Use Apple APIs and Kits on a remote server Posted: 20 May 2022 03:40 AM PDT I'm trying to make a cross-platform desktop app for MacOS and Windows that needs to do music recognition, so I'd like to use ShazamKit by Apple. By the way, ShazamKit is only available on Apple platform. So in order to allow Windows users to use it I'd like to build a REST API on some remote MacOS servers, send audio to them and get a response from them. Do you think that this could be possible or I'm violating Apple licensing aggreements? |
Fill the unoccupied space near dock Posted: 20 May 2022 06:38 AM PDT My dock has 6-7 application icons, so there is space left to the right and left of the dock. How do I use this space? Why is my apple logo with light around it? [closed] Posted: 19 May 2022 09:01 PM PDT I see light spots in the Apple logo on the back of my MacBook Pro 2016. The display of this MBP has actually been replaced. Is it possible that it has been replaced with a fake one? Previously, the Apple logo of this MBP was completely black and like a mirror. It is still black but I can see some light around it when viewed at different angles, especially in the dark. Anyone who has experienced something similar? Is this normal for an Apple original display of an MBP or not? Please help! |
Universal Docking Station (USB-A) for 2019 Windows Laptop & 2015 Macbook Pro? Posted: 19 May 2022 07:53 PM PDT I'm interested in getting a docking station that works for both of these computers mainly to have multiple displays to work on:
I bought a Targus universal docking station on eBay that connected via USB-A 3.0 but found that it was only working for the Zenbook. I was hoping for a single connector/hub/docking station VS having individual cables setup for each computer (i.e. HDMI & USB-C for the Zenbook and HDMI & Thunderbolt for the Macbook). Based on the ports available on both computers I thought a USB-A 3.0 docking station would be my best bet. Is what I'm attempting possible? Do I just need an adapter or purchase a different docking station? Will the Mac only extend displays if it's connected via Thunderbolt? UPDATE I found that the docking station does work for the MAC, but I needed to download the DisplayLink program/drivers. After doing that the additional monitors instantly started working! |
macOS Monterey 12.1 - Disable MagicMouse horizontal scrolling Posted: 20 May 2022 04:10 AM PDT How can I disable the horizontal scrolling feature of the MagicMouse? I have tried with some terminal commands: but no luck. Some suggest a small app call MagicPref but that's unsupported and old software. Other than getting read of the not-so-magic mouse, is there an alternative? |
How to disable privacy notification (orange dot) while apps access your camera or microphone Posted: 19 May 2022 10:04 PM PDT The newest version of MacOS introduced a privacy feature that will show a small orange dot in the top-right corner when an app is accessing your camera or microphone. In general, this is a very useful feature. However, there are scenarios, where I want to - at least temporarily - disable this. For example when I'm recording my screen for a video and I don't want that orange dot to pollute my entire video. I'm perfectly fine with the security implications, but it would be great if there was a way to disable this feature (at least temporarily) through some mechanism. Is there any way to achieve this? I don't care if I have to sudo-script some stuff, I just want to get rid of this annoying orange dot while recording my screen. Unfortunately, the built-in screenshot app is not intelligent enough to hide this indicator for me. |
Orginal lightning cable works with only when pushing upwards - iPhone X Posted: 19 May 2022 11:09 PM PDT After I have run with iPhone X with Lightning Earpods in wet and cold conditions (it was raining, about 3°-2°) and I was probably applying force on the cable just in the connector area - (the iPhone was loose in the pocket) - my original lightning cable works now only when pulling the cable up (looking at the iPhone screen). The same holds true for the Lightning Earpods. The contacts pins of the lightning connector appear on the bottom of the port. So it makes sense that skewing a little upwards it might get contact - but it means that the pins are worn out. What are my options? Should I try to tinker with some small needle to try to pry the contacts pins up? Is it even feasible? Is my diagnosis correct or at least probable? PS: Interestingly enough the non-orginal lightning cable which might be a little bit thicker on the ending part - works without pushing the cable up. |
Printers & Scanners not showing scan tab for Officejet Pro 8600 Posted: 20 May 2022 05:18 AM PDT On my old Macbook Pro with macOS 10.14, Printers & Scanners under System Preferences would show: Now on my new M1 Macbook Pro with macOS 12.0.1, I see no "Scan" tab: I went to HP's site and installed the driver for this printer, which just gave me "HP Easy Start", but when I run that it just says "getting device information" and spins forever and never does anything..... Is there another way I can get the scanner for this to show up on OS 12? |
Posted: 20 May 2022 06:01 AM PDT When I open the "ringtone store" directly from inside the iPhone settings for ringtones, there is a special section available for alert tones, rather than ringtones (which will end up in the "alert tone" list in iOS if you purchase them, rather than in the ringtone list where ringtones will end up). But there are only around 50 such alert sounds listed there (and most are soundbits from contemporary movies and similar, rather than your classical alert and notification sounds), and I cannot for the life of me find any way to expand this list? To make things even worse, when using the search feature in this store, the results never contain any alert tones at all, only ringtones?! For a company that has seemingly locked down any possibility for users to add their own custom alert tones (or haven't they?), this seems even more crazy, so I'd be super happy if someone would tell me that I'm just blind and/or stupid, and that there is after all an easy way to both browse and search for lots of more alert tones in Apple's "tone store"? |
GDB Hangs after "New Thread" on macOS Posted: 19 May 2022 08:49 PM PDT I have built GDB from source on macOS 12.0 and codesigned it. However, every time I try to debug a program, I get this: and then GDB hangs. I have been compiling C++ programs with g++. Here are some things I have tried:
I do not get taskgated / Mach Port errors; only the New Thread message. I realize that this is a near-duplicate of this, but I didn't see a working answer on that question. For reference, here are my versions: |
Is is possible to get audio notifications working for subfolders for Apple Mail on macos? Posted: 20 May 2022 01:04 AM PDT I want to receive audio notifications for email that lands in a particular subfolder of the Inbox. I tried accomplishing this with a smart folder/mailbox but I'm not getting an audio notification for new email arriving in the subfolder. Is it possible to get an audio notification on individual subfolders? I can get audio notifications when the email lands directly in the inbox. |
Big Sur Bootcamp stuck partitioning Posted: 20 May 2022 03:07 AM PDT I have a 2016 MBP with Big Sur and 170GB of internal drive space free and when trying to use Bootcamp to partition the drive with an 80GB disc for Windows 10 and it is stuck in the partitioning phase at ~40%... Closing Macbook lid changes external screen to primary Posted: 19 May 2022 08:02 PM PDT I've recently got a new Macbook with Big Sur and I'm observing some different behaviour compared to my old Macbook with Catalina. I have an external monitor connected as a secondary display and I have a video player streaming on full-screen on it. When I close the lid, on Catalina my video keeps playing on the external secondary display, however on my new laptop when I close the lid the external display turns into primary, and I'm seeing my laptop's windows rather than the video. Any ideas what might be causing this? |
Posted: 20 May 2022 04:03 AM PDT I would like to share the internet connection on my MacBook Pro (a wifi connection) with my iPad Pro 4th generation via usb-c cable. The MacBook Pro is running Catalina 10.15.6. I followed the instructions in this post: System Preferences -> Content Sharing -> Switch ON and check "Internet connection". However, nothing happens on the iPad. I can't load any page. Any help with this? Is there anything I should do on the iPad side? Thank you very much! ps: if you wonder why I would do that: the iPad Pro 4th generation (brand new) has a horrible wifi reception... |
Posted: 20 May 2022 02:01 AM PDT Finder does not recognize all sharepoints available, opens only 1 that was previously mouned by default; runing macOS Catalina 10.15.5 acting as client connecting to AFP File Server running Mac OS Server Sierra 10.12.6) On my server (Mac OS Server Sierra 10.12.6) my sharepoints look like this: I should have 4 available sharepoints (shared folders) to my user jfb on the system: FAMILY-ARCHIVE, jfb, PHOTOS-ARCHIVE, and VAULT (the other two you see in the picture are not accessible by my user jfb) However, when connecting to this server from a machine running macOS Catalina 10.15.5 (*intermitant), my client machine bypasses the sharepoint selection screen and goes directly to mount a single sharepoint that I previously have mounted This happens even though I DO NOT have the username/password stored in teh keychain-- I just connected to this sharepoint earlier in this finder session with it. If I disconnect the sharepoint (using the "Eject" next to the sharepoint in any finder window) and reconnect, the same thing happens. *Please note that this worked several times before and I have seen this symptom be intermittant. |
How can I hyper customize the MacBookPro Touch Bar? Posted: 20 May 2022 07:05 AM PDT I want my Touch Bar to have:
I don't care if the buttons have to be squished to achieve this. I know you can do some customization through System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard, but it doesn't give you much fine control. Is there another interface or maybe even a config file one can use to hyper customize the Touch Bar? |
How to clear "bell" flag (icon, sound) in Terminal tab? Posted: 19 May 2022 08:58 PM PDT The Terminal tabs in OS X can sometimes trigger a persistent "bell" condition where a bell icon appears in the title tab, and every time I navigate to that tab using cmd-tab, the alert sound occurs, and the bell icon fades away, and then whenever I change tabs again, the alert sound occurs again and the bell icon reappears. Switching screens can also trigger the same pair of alert sounds. The upshot of all of this is that I can easily enter a condition where I'm hearing spurious alert noises many times per minute; it's irritating. Obviously, I can just close that particular tab, but this causes several problems--I many have long-running processes in the background of that tab, or a specific arrangement (the leftmost tab contains a particular job, for instance. EDIT: I think I didn't make it clear that I don't want to disable the bell sound; I want it to occur when a bad thing happens. What I don't want is for a given Terminal tab to have a permanent error condition where every change to that tab sounds the bell. Here's a movie: https://brinckerhoff.org/tmp/terminal-bell-movie.mov Unfortunately, these movies don't include the irritating sound--I think Apple doesn't want to make it too easy to capture computer audio--but you can see the bell icon disappearing and reappearing, and imagine the bell occurring for both of these. |
Problem with creating hotspot on macOS Posted: 20 May 2022 05:04 AM PDT I have a question regarding the setup of a hotspot on my Mac. I have a wired ethernet connection, which I connect to the computer. I would then like to be able to connect to that same connection (and the LAN) on my iPhone over wifi. I followed the steps here (https://www.maketecheasier.com/create-wifi-hotspot-using-mac-os-x/) which worked, however, there is a problem. Whenever I do this, the Macbook acts as a router, not allowing me to access any devices on the original LAN the Mac is connected to. I would instead prefer if it acted more like an AP, allowing communication to flow between my iPhone and everything on the LAN. Thanks in advance! EDIT: To clarify, the important thing here is that I can't access any devices that are already present on my LAN. I have an IKEA Tradfri hub connected via ethernet to my router. Also connected to my router is a powerline adapter. The second powerline adapter is connected to the Macbook I was talking about. So now, when I connect to the Macbook's wifi, I can't access the hub. (This is, however, possible from the Macbook - I checked via a ping request, there is no app available for mac as far as I know.) My Macbook is therefore acting as a router, where the ethernet cable is plugged in to the port which says Internet. I need it to act like an AP or a router where the ethernet cable is plugged in to a normal LAN port. I hope this clarifies the difference. Thanks again! |
