How to enable flashlight from an apple watch complication

Posted: 31 May 2022 09:24 AM PDT

Using an Apple Watch SE series 44-mm (Model: A2352), is it possible to set the flashlight function as a complication?

Maybe using built in functions, Shortcuts or Watchsmith?

I'm using the Infograph Modular face.

Renaming tabs in Safari using AppleScript

Posted: 31 May 2022 06:42 AM PDT

I followed the given answer here, but I want to make this interactive and take input from a dialog box to get the tab number and new name. Here is what I have so far:

set tabNumResponse to (display dialog "Tab Number:" default answer "" buttons {"Give Up", "Set Tab #"} default button "Set Tab #" with title "Tab Renamizer") set tabNameResponse to (display dialog "Tab Name:" default answer "" with icon caution buttons {"Give Up", "Change"} default button "Change" with title "Tab Renamizer") tell application "Safari" do JavaScript "document.title = (text returned of tabNameResponse);" in tab (number of tabNumResponse) of window 1 end tell

This runs, but it refuses to actually change the tab name. If I run it as the linked answer above that uses absolute values it updates the tab name as expected, but I cannot get it to work with variables. Any help is really appreciated.

Throttling MacBook Pro 16inch(late 2019) even though CPU/GPU temps are not high [duplicate]

Posted: 31 May 2022 06:39 AM PDT

Lately it's becoming impossible to use my Mac, it always throttle, I thought it was getting too hot, but I checked the temps and while it was throttling, with Kernel_task at 1000% CPU use, the temps were pretty normal. I was only running Shadow, which is a gaming streaming service. I tried rendering a video earlier to see if it was a shadow only issue, but same thing happened.

I tried resetting SMC and nvram multiple times, didn't help. Is there any fix without needing to install anything sketchy?

Edit : I tried all the solutions of changing the charging port form left to right, right to left, using in closed clamshell mode, low power mode, even not plugging a power cable at all, nothing works.

Apple Music Smart Playlist not adding to iCloud Music Library

Posted: 31 May 2022 06:16 AM PDT

I created a smart playlist on Apple Music to sort one of my playlists. The smart playlist was successfully created but when I tried syncing it across all my devices, it showed an error saying that "The playlist "XYZ" can't be added to your iCloud Music Library. iCloud music library playlists can only include music from your iCloud music library. This playlist can't be uploaded because it includes other media kinds or songs that are not eligible." But all the songs added to this playlist are from Apple Music itself.

Under rules for smart playlist I have selected "Playlist is ABC(the original playlist whose songs I wanted to sort) and selected by most recently added"

Is there any way to upload this to iCloud music library?

Japanese speech to text to use kanji for numbers by default?

Posted: 31 May 2022 04:11 AM PDT

I use speech-to-text to practice Japanese. When I say numbers in Japanese, it inputs Arabic numerals for the number parts of the words instead of kanji.

For example, if I say "one" in Japanese, or "ichi", I get 1, but I want to get . Similarly "futari" gives me 2人 instead of 二人.

Is there a way to set it up so that speech-to-text uses kanji for numbers?

How to pass command line options to Google Chrome App / Shortcut?

Posted: 31 May 2022 04:15 AM PDT

I have created a Chrome Shortcut following this answer:

https://apple.stackexchange.com/a/329655/460176

Now I want the app to open in full-screen mode every time I launch it. I know I can open the app's package contents through Finder by right clicking on it. I don't understand where I could edit anything to pass any CLI options.

The folder structure is as follows:

<app> └── Contents ├── Info.plist ├── MacOS │ └── app_mode_loader ├── PkgInfo └── Resources ├── app.icns └── de-DE.lpoj └── InfoPlist.strings

My Adobe Illustrator often froze because of sandboxd

Posted: 31 May 2022 05:01 AM PDT

The problem just started today. When using Illustrator, it starts to randomly freeze with the rainbow icon (mouse cursor).

When I check Activity Monitor, "sandboxd" used 93 to sometimes 100% of my CPU.

How can I fix this?

Unable to see Macintosh HD, error 69770 on Running First Aid

Posted: 31 May 2022 07:00 AM PDT

I have deleted Ubuntu partition from my main drive by deleting it in Disk Utility tool, not knowing it changes partition to "FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF". I have tried to change it by using suggestions here, but with no success, my partition does not resemble anything it was before.

I honestly only care about few files inside it, which had not been backed up. I only care to get them and recover partition to default state/erase it.

Provisioning profile is not an "iOS In House" profile

Posted: 31 May 2022 06:45 AM PDT

I am building .ipa my application for distribution. And here is he error I have got:

Encountered error while creating the IPA: error: exportArchive: Provisioning profile "xxx.xxx.xxx" is not an "iOS In House" profile.

Here, looks like I have found the solution of my problem, but, in list of profile creating options I just don't have this iOS In House.

enter image description here

So, then I have found out, that this is because I didn't enroll Apple Developer Enterprise Program (but I have paid for apple developer account).

PS. Here is certificate and profile I have now:

  1. Certificate Type - iOS Distribution
  2. Provisioning Profile - App Store

So, is there a way to change this profile?

Can the iPhone reliably detect fake batteries or are there ways around it?

Posted: 31 May 2022 07:50 AM PDT

I'm a resident in a developing country with lots of fake products. There's also no Apple store except in the capital, and the 'authorized resellers' may actually still have fake parts. Now I need to replace the battery in my iPhone SE 2020, but I want to make sure it's not a fake and dangerous battery. If I have the battery replaced here and the iPhone does not warn me that it's a fake battery, is that actually reliable and can I trust on that to not have the battery explode in my face?

How can Siri be instructed to set smart light color temperature automatically?

Posted: 31 May 2022 02:06 AM PDT

Apple's "Home" system is capable of setting compatible smart lights, including Philips Hue and others, to a mode which adjusts the color temperature automatically based on brightness and time of day.

enter image description here

However, while I can easily instruct Siri to set these lights to one of any number of named colors, I don't know how to tell Siri to enable automatic color temperature mode.

How can this be done?

How does file access time updating work on macOS?

Posted: 30 May 2022 11:13 PM PDT

I have a volume on my 12.3.1 M1 Macbook Pro, /System/Volumes/Data, which has attributes apfs, local, journaled, nobrowse, protect but not noatime. I would assume, then, that any access of a file in this volume will update the file's access time (which I get with stat -f '%Sa' /path/to/file). However, when I run cat /path/to/file, I don't see it being updated, nor when I do a simple open/read/close in C. What's going on here?

'bird' out of control -- how do I diagnose in Big Sur?

Posted: 31 May 2022 01:15 AM PDT

The bird process is out of control on my machine, running 80-100% of cpu nonstop. Rebooting did not settle it down.

I know this runs iCloud. This page suggests it should be possible to use brctl log to find problematic files causing the process to be wedged.

https://appletoolbox.com/bird-process-high-cpu-usage-mac/

But the page recommends a command

brctl log -w –shorten

that does not seem to work in Big Sur -- neither "w" nor "shorten" flags seem to exist any more.

Does anyone have a useful prescription for reining in iCloud when it goes out of control?

Where are the default icons stored on macOS Monterey?

Posted: 31 May 2022 12:07 AM PDT

Running on macOS Monterey v12

I recently learned that if you create a folder called Developer in your home directory, you can drag it to the sidebar in Finder and it will display with a tiny hammer icon. However, if the folder is anywhere in iCloud instead, e.g. ~/Documents/Developer it will not have the hammer icon, nor will it show up as a hammer on the sidebar.

I tried creating ~/Documents/Developer folder and copy&pasting the DeveloperFolderIcon found in System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources. That works but I notice that those icons are actually different from the ones macOS natively uses.

The one found in Resources:

enter image description here

The one natively created:

So my question is, where are these "native", newer icons?

Screen Sharing changes resolution for no reason

Posted: 31 May 2022 09:15 AM PDT

I'm using the built-in Screen Sharing client in macOS to connect to a Mac Mini 2020 M1 by running Connect to Server in Finder and choosing the vnc://machine-name.local link.

The connection works fine, except for one thing: It keeps changing resolution approximately every 10 seconds. The effect is that what is shown in the client window changes between the whole screen and a fraction of the screen.

If I open the Displays setting through VNC it just shows the ordinary settings for the ordinary display. I can set it to Scaled and specify a certain resolution, but that does not help.

The Screen Sharing Preferences has a few options that seem related to the display, e.g. Show full size and Show the screen at full quality. I have changed them in all combinations that I can think of. Nothing has made any difference.

There is also the Scaling toggle in the toolbar of the Screen Sharing app. Again, it doesn't seem to do anything (what is it supposed to do?).

I have also tested connecting with the RealVNC vnc-viewer, it had the same issue.

The Mac mini is not really headless, it does have a monitor connected to HDMI, but the monitor is mostly turned off.

Remove Fn shortcut for switching input language

Posted: 31 May 2022 05:36 AM PDT

Ever since updating to Monterey, pressing the Fn key switches the input source (language/character set). I normally press Fn+F11/F12 to change the volume, and now every time I change the volume I also change the keyboard input source, which is super annoying:

Keyboard input source switching popup menu

Going to System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts, I don't see the Fn key mentioned anywhere, and in particular nothing suspicious is listed in the Input Sources shortcuts (I have a single custom shortcut active there):

Input Sources keyboard shortcuts; "Select the previous input source" is set to ^F12

How can I disable using the Fn key to switch the keyboard input source?

Date is wrong by months when set to automatic on 12.1 Monterey (MacBook Pro 14)

Posted: 31 May 2022 08:25 AM PDT

Upon booting up by machine (2021 MacBook Pro 14 on 12.1) after fully running out of battery for the first time (I've owned the machine for a couple months) I noticed the date and time were completely wrong by a number of months. The offset is consistent and displays today's date as 25th September 2021, it is currently the 8th of January 2022.

date and time preference pane

I've tried resetting the SMC, restarted the machine a few times, have checked all date and time settings as normal and appropriate - unchanged from when I first set it up.

alex@Alexs-MacBook-Pro ~ % ntpdate -q pool.ntp.org server 188.125.64.7, stratum 2, offset +9088877.936268, delay 0.07085 server 162.159.200.1, stratum 3, offset +9088877.930845, delay 0.05722 server 162.159.200.123, stratum 3, offset +9088877.932137, delay 0.05659 server 85.91.1.180, stratum 2, offset +9088877.938617, delay 0.05498 25 Sep 06:35:35 ntpdate[1630]: step time server 85.91.1.180 offset +9088877.938617 sec

Running the following command resyncs the date and time perfectly, but after about a day when left in automatic mode or by unchecking and rechecking the box it resets back to the massive offset.

sudo sntp -sS time.apple.com

I noticed a user with a similar problem in the forum but was unable to use any solutions provided:

Why does `Finder` give me the incorrect size information of a folder?

Posted: 31 May 2022 07:10 AM PDT

When I open the folder Library/Containers in Finder, I see the following information:

enter image description here

It gives me the impression, the folder com.docker.docker uses 64GB.

But when I run the following command

du -d 1 -m Library/Containers/ | sort -n

I get the output

2806 Library/Containers//com.docker.docker

So why do I get these very different results? Does this folder use 64GB, or just under 3GB?

In addition, there is a file com.docker.docker/Data/vms/0/data//Docker.raw for which ls tells me that file has a size of 64 GB (i.e. 63999836160 bytes). But the whole folder (according to du) occupies less than 3 GB. How can that be?

How to cleanup "Library/Containers/com.docker.docker" on a Mac?

How do I disable language switch popup?

Posted: 31 May 2022 05:11 AM PDT

I'm a new member of apple products community and I'm learning how to setup a process I've got used to. One of inconveniences is language switch. When I'm trying to change language I get a popup with language list (see pic below). The problem is it introduces a small delay before change actually applies (which meh but I can live with it) and the bigger problem that if your mouse is around screen center then mouse pointer overrides language selection and you can stuck with one language unless you move the cursor somewhere

enter image description here

I wonder if there is any way to workaround it with OS X built in tools. I'd really like to not install any 3rd party tools or assigning switch to another key - this one works just fine, the only problem is this pop up.

How do you disable Command + Tab (App switcher) in Monterey so that window switcher shortcuts from other applications can replace it?

Posted: 31 May 2022 08:29 AM PDT

I'm trying out Raycast app without any prior experience of its kind such as Alfred. To my astonishment, it has a built-in Switch Windows functionality which I can assign a hotkey. I am trying to replace the hotkey for Mac OS' App Switcher with that of Raycast's Window Switcher(CMD+Tab). However, it seems (CMD+Tab) is not an overridable shortcut.

I seriously hate how app switcher works and would love to adopt a more reasonable window switcher without additional applications. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

How do I run a sudo command at login/logout on macOS

Posted: 30 May 2022 11:38 PM PDT

I'm trying to run a command at login/logout which requires sudo. I've read about LaunchDaemon and LaunchAgent but as I understand it, LaunchDaemon will run the command at startup with root permissions, and LaunchAgent will run it at login but with the current user permissions, which won't always be an administrator.

Alternatively, is there a way to run my command without the need of sudo? I'm trying to wipe all files in the home directories (Desktop, Documents etc.) on user login/logout so am currently using sudo rm -rf /users/randomuser/Desktop/* etc. Similar to how a guest account works, but without the account being guest and with a little more control. I'm pretty new to this kind of thing so please explain like I'm 5. More than happy to try out another solution if required. Thanks!

EDIT - Thanks for the help so far. Here's a bit more detail about the use case:

I have a mac that will be used by myself (admin) and a few other people (second account). I don't want data to persist between logins on this second account, similar to how the Guest Account works. The problem with the guest account is, it resets applications placed in the dock between logins as well as resetting the desktop wallpaper (which I would like to keep the same throughout logins). My solution was to set up a standard account, lock the dock using defaults write com.apple.Dock size-immutable -bool yes and set the wallpaper manually. As for the data, I would like all files that have been downloaded or transferred by the user to be wiped when the user logs out (or equally, when the next user logs in). Alternatively, If there is a way for the Guest Account to not reset the dock and wallpaper on logout, this would also work. Thanks again!

Can I patch arbitrary apps to add Speak Text accessibility to macOS apps that don’t support it?

Posted: 31 May 2022 12:03 AM PDT

In many (if not, most) Mac apps that display or edit text, you can select text and have it spoken out loud, via a right-click or the Edit menu:

enter image description here

Note: I am aware of the Accessibility setting that assigns a keyboard shortcut to speak text… but it doesn't always behave as you'd expect and sometimes reads text from the page that is not highlighted.

Some apps that you would expect to have this ability, don't… which is a pretty big accessibility issue for lots of folks (myself included).

Is there any way to forcibly get this functionality into uncooperative apps?

My PC has over 200 GB of free storage but iTunes won't back up my iPhone with 64 GB

Posted: 31 May 2022 06:33 AM PDT

Why am I getting the message that there's not enough space when I know I have plenty on my laptop?

AppleScript to rename Safari Tab

Posted: 31 May 2022 06:31 AM PDT

There is an option in Keyboard Maestro to rename any tab on safari with the name you want

I'm trying to do the same using AppleScript but is this even possible?

I have nothing so far, I'm guessing JavaScript would be the way to do it

tell application "Safari" tell front window to make new tab at after first tab with properties {URL:myLink} -- need to rename tab here tell front window to make new tab at after second tab with properties {URL:myLink} -- need to rename tab here tell front window to make new tab at after third tab with properties {URL:myLink} -- need to rename tab here end tell

Microsoft Sculpt Keyboard becomes unresponsive intermittently on mac

Posted: 31 May 2022 06:11 AM PDT

I have a macbook pro running OS X v10.13.6 and am using the microsoft sculpt keyboard with it. The keyboard works but would become unresponsive intermittently. This is the setting I see in System Information:

enter image description here

I did some search and found some related links but:

  • This one says its completely unresponsive which is not what I am experiencing
  • This one also does not help
  • Over here I can see 10.13.6 is not listed but am guessing that's just because its outdated and the info needs to be updated
  • This does not help
  • This too did not help

I have listed above links as sometimes I would get a downvote saying what have you tried - so listing them to show I have done some due diligence and unable to resolve the issue.

Further I have turned bluetooth off on my mac to avoid any interference (not that it should matter)

The Keyboard System Assistant (system Preferences -> keyboard -> change keyboard type...) shows this:

Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Thanks

Error while changing the default application with which we open a file

Posted: 30 May 2022 11:02 PM PDT

Recently I've tried to change the default application with which a file is opened, by doing the following:

  1. Right click on the file

  2. Get info

  3. In "Open with", change to the application you want your file to be opened with.

  4. Click on the "Change All" button which is found under the "Open with" label

in the last step, i.e. when I click on "Change All", I receive the following message:

enter image description here

then if I look at the default application that opens this file, it's really the application I've just chosen, but when I click on the file to open it, I've the following error message:

enter image description here

Yes, I was trying to open a Makefile for a C program.

Any ideas of why this is happening and how to solve it?

Screen capture utility no longer saves to Desktop

Posted: 31 May 2022 06:11 AM PDT

In the last few weeks, screen capture stopped working on my MBP. Well, partially.

I can still capture to the clipboard with command + control + shift + 4, but if I try to do a standard capture to a file, my Mac plays the screen capture sound but nothing gets saved on my Desktop.

I'm running OS X 10.9.2. The issue has survived a reboot.

Any suggestions?
