| Problems with Finder and accessing newly created Macintosh HD volume since migration Posted: 08 Dec 2021 03:58 AM PST I recently bought a new iMac and migrated everything over from my old mac using Timemachine. The first thing I noticed was it created a second Macintosh HD volume (see screen grab). I'm also experienceing problems seeing newly created files in the finder windows. Anything I save doesn't show and I have to keep force quitting finder to see where I've saved things. I also use RemotePC to transfer files remotely to and from my work server (I'm home based at the moment) and I cannot 'see' the newly created Macintosh HD volume within the Remote software that I use so I'm unable to transfer files. I think all of these issues are because it's reading everything off the volume created? Any ideas how to solve this, is it a case of starting from scratch and deleting everything (I have my work backed up).

| Getting extra character when copy string to iTerm Posted: 08 Dec 2021 03:45 AM PST I'm using iTerm and when when pasting some string I've just copied from the terminal command prompt, I get some extra characters on prefix and suffix that match 00~ and 01~ respectively. I.e. I've copied the string: ./Build/Products/Debug/data.json
and it pasted the following output (same results when paste back in iTerm or in any other application): 00~./Build/Products/Debug/data.json01~
any idea who to avoid this? |
| External keyboard stop workin' [HyperX Mechanical Keyboard] Posted: 08 Dec 2021 03:38 AM PST I have an external keyboard plugged into my MacBook Pro [M1 2020]. Sometimes some keys stop to respond. But when I replug it, it starts work again. I am not sure what exact keyboard I am using. It is a mechanical keyboard from HyperX. How can I fix that issue? Thank you. |
| Instagram login issues Posted: 08 Dec 2021 02:25 AM PST I have had the same Instagram account for 8 years and never had to log in with the password. I got a new phone and it's been two weeks now and it keeps saying confirm your identity or device not recognised. It will not send me a reset to my email or mobile and I can't fill out the deactivation form because the account is still there it just won't send me a password reset. |

| Can't open ePub in Book "The operation couldn’t be completed. No such file or directory" report Posted: 08 Dec 2021 01:21 AM PST I have a bunch of ePub files a friend of mine gave me, but some of them won't load into Books (3.2). I'm running macOS Big Sur 11.6.1 The warning "The operation couldn't be completed. No such file or directory" appear when I try to double click the "bad" files or drop it directly into Books. 
Any idea why / How can I fix this ? |
| Change position of translation or add shortcut Posted: 08 Dec 2021 01:18 AM PST I have two mac and in 12.0.1 (21A559) and I see the translation option is not in the same place. On one of the macs it is at the beginning and the other at the end. Does anyone know how to change the position? Or even better, be able to put a shortcut with or without karabiner.

| Bug in Preview: How do I hide slideshow controls when viewing a full screen PDF? Posted: 07 Dec 2021 09:49 PM PST Preview has two distinct kinds of full screen mode: - The normal full screen mode that most macOS applications have (View > Enter Full Screen)
- Preview's special slideshow mode (View > Slideshow)
In slideshow mode, whenever you move your mouse, slideshow controls will appear at the bottom of the screen. They look like this:  However, since I upgraded to macOS Monterey, these controls also appear when I open a PDF in ordinary full screen mode. This is really annoying when I try to read and looks like a bug to me, as it wasn't there before. The problem only occurs after the mouse pointer has been hidden at least once, which automatically happens after a few seconds of not moving it. Is there any way to disable the slideshow controls in normal full screen?
Edit: In the meantime, I also noticed that the slideshow mode (that isn't particularly useful for PDFs but nevertheless exists) is now totally messed up: When you start the slideshow and press any key, Preview will end the slideshow, as can be seen in the View menu: The View > Slideshow menu entry is selectable again! I think this is related to the problem I asked about—the entire slideshow vs full screen logic is confused. |

The screen connects to laptops via USB-C and has a mouse and a keyboard permanently connected. When working on Mac, I prefer to use Magic Mouse and Magic Keyboard that I connect to MacBook Pro via Bluetooth. However, the ordinary mouse and keyboard also remain active as those are connected to the Mac via USB-C and USB ports in LCD screen. How can I disable those two devices without physically disconnecting them? | Music app shows a -x dB for some songs Posted: 08 Dec 2021 02:11 AM PST Similar to this question I have a few music files inside music.app that plays very quietly. After opening "Get Info" of the songs, the last tab shows a "volume" with - 3db (or less or more) 
But the "volume adjust" of the same song is set to 0% in the option tab 
How can I remove the -3 dB of the songs, and all the songs that may have this issue in Music ? (I have more than 40k songs so checking them one by one is going to take forever...) Perhaps another app can help me with that ? |
| How can I make my Mac automatically switch to a new speaker when it is connected, and back to my internal speakers after it's disconnected? Posted: 07 Dec 2021 11:03 PM PST For some reason, when I connect my Sony Bluetooth speaker to my Mac, my Mac usually does not automatically set this Bluetooth speaker as my audio output device. Audio continues playing from my internal speakers until I manually click the audio icon in the menu bar and set "SRS-XB12" as my output device. Furthermore, when I disconnect this speaker, my Mac sets the audio output device to my USB Microphone, rather than back to my internal speakers. When I connect my Bluetooth speaker, I want my Mac to automatically start playing audio from that speaker. When I disconnect my speaker, I want it to play audio from the internal speakers. How can I make that happen? |
| “Setting up iCloud Drive” just spins in the Finder Window? Posted: 08 Dec 2021 12:20 AM PST It freaks me out, iDrive doesn't want to work (to be specific: it's since 4 days like this). Here is a photo, click me! - https://i.stack.imgur.com/3jO7s.png I already contacted the apple support, they have no damn clue and forwarded it to the apple devs, this may take weeks. I don't have that time :( We already tried several things (with the support). rebooting, safemode, disconnecting apple ID, reinstalling big sur, and so on. Nothing works, it's really a problem on apple's side. I also read a thread on some apple board that is just a couple of months old, where a guy had the same problem, and the Apple Devs had to fix it, he had a Mac Mini M1. I have a MBP Mid 2015. iCloud Drive does work on the web and on my iPhone, but not with my Mac(book pro), we tried it with different users: no solution. I am really frustrated, I appreciate every help! |
| Books on Mac won't download epubs from iCloud Posted: 08 Dec 2021 12:02 AM PST I use Books on Mac (Big Sur) to organize my non-Apple epub library. Books successfully syncs across devices, and when I want to read a book on my Mac, I often need to click the cloud download button in the top right corner of the book cover to download the book. At some point recently, downloading stopped working on Mac (only). When I click the button, the title is added to the 'download manager' ("Show Downloads" next to the "All Books" link), however the progress indicator spins endlessly and the books are not downloaded. I have 15GB free on my 512GB disk, running Big Sur 11.2.3 on a Macbook Pro 2017. Any idea why this might be happening and what I can do about it?

| Stuck in a Review Account loop Posted: 08 Dec 2021 01:31 AM PST I just got my first iPhone and created my Apple ID. I tried to download some apps from the AppStore, but it keeps telling me this Apple ID has not been used yet, please review account to continue and asks for password, but then goes nowhere. It just keeps bringing me back to requesting the password over and over. I have tried to put in billing/shipping info in settings to no avail. Unfortunately I don't have a Mac, nor do I have a computer that has iTunes on it so I can't log in there. Any ideas how to resolve this issue? |

| Removing the “unread messages” indicator when messages were deleted by bug Posted: 08 Dec 2021 04:07 AM PST So, I recently experienced what seems to be quite an old bug in the default Messages app for the iPhone: while I was typing a text message, my phone's battery died, and when the phone was powered back on, my text message history seemed to have been entirely deleted. However, there's still the little number in a red bubble on the app's icon indicating unread messages, which I don't seem to be able to remove since I can't read the deleted messages. Is there any way to recover the messages so that I can read them (other than using a cloud backup I haven't made), or a way to reset the unread messages indicator to display the correct value for the messages it has access to? |
| Is there an iPad app which will let me use the orientation of my iPad to emulate a joystick on PC? Posted: 07 Dec 2021 09:21 PM PST I would like to be able to play games on my Windows PC using a joystick instead of keyboard and/or mouse as controls. However I don't have a joystick. I could buy one, but I want to see if I could use my iPad as a joystick. I want to be able to tilt the iPad and the angle of the iPad to be the joystick input to the computer. It should be possible to make an app like this; the question is whether anyone has made an app like this. There is an app called Custom Control Pad which works as a joystick input to a computer. However, it does not appear to have a feature to read the iPad's orientation - you can only use an on screen joystick or sliders. I've tried contacting the makers of CCP but their forum does not appear to be working. EDIT: A year later I again wanted to use an iPad as a joystick, so I created the program myself. Press ⌘ + F to open a Finder window; select what I want to search (this Mac, recent files, etc); press the Plus Sign to add criteria (such as extension, title, type of file, etc). After the upgrade, there is no Plus Sign. All I can do is search all occurrences of whatever I type. How do I add search criteria like I did before? |

| Switch between windows by name on OSX Posted: 07 Dec 2021 09:15 PM PST Is there a way to switch between windows by typing a portion of the target window's name? (like doing Spotlight search but for windows) I frequently have many windows open, and CMD-Tab & friends, and graphical utilities like Witch really don't cut it. I am looking for something analogous to the Emacs iswitch. https://github.com/nate-parrott/Flashlight apparently used to do this (and much more) in prior versions of OSX. |

| Can a 3rd party charger damage my macbook pro? Posted: 07 Dec 2021 09:07 PM PST I forgot my macbook pro charger at a friends place and I won't have it for a week. I saw that there are 3rd party chargers being sold for half the price of official chargers. Can 3rd party chargers damage my macbook pro? After I get my normal charger back in a week I will be mostly using that one and keep the new one as an extra, so I won't be using it fulltime. |
| How to get a clean install of Windows 10 to activate? Posted: 08 Dec 2021 03:13 AM PST I have Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit installed on my iMac (20-inch mid 2007). I have downloaded from Microsoft a free copy of Windows 10 Pro 64 bit. Microsoft did not ask me to do so. I decided since Window 10 is free, I would like to try it. I do not have a Product Key. During installation, I want to format my Windows partition and do a clean install of Windows 10. When finished, I what Windows 10 to be activated. Update 1: In response to bmike answer, I will add the following. My Mac's firmware will not boot the 64 bit Windows DVD releases by Microsoft. I have to burn a special DVD where the EFI booting is removed. The procedure is given here. I also have problems installing the Boot Camp Support Software 4.0.4033. The solution to this problem is posted here. So when Apple posts, basically you have to have a 2012 or newer Mac to run Windows 10, I would not believe this to be true. Microsoft has always incorporated the ability to use previous version drivers to run Windows. This goes all the way back to the days of OS/2. |
