App's permission and user's permission

Posted: 24 Dec 2021 04:49 AM PST

Do apps work within the permissions granted to the user running it? Or can it read files for which the executing user does not have read permissions?

DEP Enrollment with Virtual Machines

Posted: 24 Dec 2021 04:08 AM PST

I have a company-provided 2019 MacBook Pro that is enrolled in Apple DEP and has Jamf as the MDM provider. (OS Version is Big Sur, 11.6.2)

For a side project I created several virtual machines with Parallels and VirtualBox and it quickly turned into another kind of endeavour:

With VirtualBox, the OS setup never gets to the "remote management" step, just goes on like a generic Mac. But with Parallels, no matter what I do (in terms of configuration), it is always stuck at the "remote management" step. (Which I don't want.) I mean, I can opt into it with my VM but the setup won't let me go without it. This is never the case with VirtualBox.

This ingrigued me and I have been experimenting and researching about it. Because I am kind of new to the Apple world and want to learn more about it.

Questions:

  1. How is this even possible? How does the VM (in Parallels) get aware of its outside world and is able to introduce itself (specifically to my company's) MDM server and more importantly how come there is no way to isolate the VM from the company?

  2. Keeping the internet disconnected during OS setup actually lets me install the OS without DEP. This does not make sense either. The thing is heavily enforced but you can get around it simply by disconnecting?

  3. Under these circumstamces, is it true that if I create a new partition in my disk drive and install a new macOS without internet I would be able to get a generic macOS?

Some More Details:

  • I tried the OS installations with (what I believe to be) a clean ISO. Grabbed it from App Store and extracted the ISO using createinstallmedia utility through CLI.

  • In Parallels, actually, the VM is not readily able to grab the MDM profiles from the server. To obtain them, the machine must have a registered serial number and a correct device id, both of which are configurable within Parallels. During my research, I also verified this is really the case with Apple DEP. But this also means the virtual machine, by default, just has a generic serial number, yet it still able to identify itself with my company. (i.e. Requires the remote management step to be fulfilled.)

  • At some point, I suspected that Parallels itself may have been configured to act exactly like this by having its own profile set, enforced through my company. And there are indeed two profiles (among 30+) that is related to the Parallels but their descriptions do not seem to be related to DEP enrollment.

  • I also thought (just guessing), company proxy may have been forcing the VM to go through this DEP-enforcement but then, wouldn't it be the case with VirtualBox, too?

"The contents of this iPad could not be read" - error when connecting 2020 iPad Pro (iPadOS 14.8) to M1 Max MBP (macOS 12.1)

Posted: 24 Dec 2021 02:19 AM PST

As I can't update my iPad via its Settings ("An error occurred while checking for a software update"), I am trying to do so via Finder on my MBP. However, I'm stymied because of the error in subject. I've tried 2 cables, so I don't believe it's a problem with the cable - any ideas? I can't even back it up. What would cause such an error? How do I back it up if the contents can't be read? There are files on there I don't want to lose.

If the SSD is corrupt, what would have caused it? It's rarely taken out, has never been dropped, or subjected to rough handling, so I can't see what the issue would be.

Is there any way I can resolve this without restoring it? Are there any diagnostics I can run?

My Mac has no problem reading my older iPad Pro (2017).

If I look at 'USB' in SysInfo, I can see my iPad there, so the computer obviously knows it exists.

Thanks

Mission control keyboard shortcuts: add more desktops

Posted: 24 Dec 2021 02:28 AM PST

I've been using i3 window manager on my linux laptop. It's great and I am used to keyboard shortcuts to move to a specific desktop.

On MacOS I have been able to replicate this for the first 3 desktops but I usually have 4 or 5, sometimes up to 9. How could I add a shortcut for those other desktops? I only see an option for the first 3. enter image description here

Why does the text "Erase process has failed." Keep on popping up when I try to delete a ISO Image(I tried using terminal and it didn't work

WindowServer crashing intermittently on M1 macbook

Posted: 23 Dec 2021 10:25 PM PST

My M1 macbook air crashes intermittently, like 3 times a week and it's driving me crazy.

It seems there is no specific trigger to cause the crash. Sometime when I'm working with Intellij, sometime during a Slack video meeting, or browsing some websites, or even when it's idle.

There is IOGPUDevice::new_resource at the last of spin log stack trace. Could this be memory leak or something?

Why macbook always reboot or logout?

Posted: 23 Dec 2021 10:25 PM PST

I bought the AOC U27P2C monitor a few days ago. It is connected externally with MBP Type-C and can be charged in reverse at 65W. My MacBook Pro 15 inch is of 19 years.

There was no problem during use, but after I locked the computer screen, the computer will reboot (or logout? I'm not sure because it always reminds me that "you need to enter a password to use TouchID") automatically after a period of time. I thought it was a problem with the Type-C line, so I bought another line and tried it. There was still the same problem.

What's the problem? Is it the problem with the display?

Here is the system log:

M1 Mac Mini loses ethernet connection frequently

Posted: 23 Dec 2021 07:30 PM PST

I have a new M1 Mac Mini running the latest version of macOS Monterey.

I've connected it via Ethernet to a switch, using the native onboard Mac Mini Ethernet port. But the ethernet connection cuts out and drops connectivity every 20-30 seconds. The Wi-Fi connection does not have this problem.

If I leave System Preferences > Network open in the background, I see the Ethernet connection constantly dropping and reordering itself under Wi-Fi. After a few seconds, the Ethernet connection reconnects and again moves to the top of the list.

Ethernet Not Connected

What is wrong with this Ethernet connection? Why is it dropping? How can I fix this issue and hopefully turn off Wi-Fi on this Mac?

Console app shows some potential logging related to this, although I'm not sure what I should be looking for:

kernel | AppleBCM5701Ethernet [en0]: Link down (womp disabled, proxy idle)

Springboard | -[NWSystemPathMonitor updateFlags] Wi-Fi primary: false->true, Ethernet primary: true->false, VPN active: false->false

AppleScript to automate switching user not working in Monterey

Posted: 23 Dec 2021 09:01 PM PST

I have the following AppleScript that's supposed to automatically switch to the Administrator user. It worked in Big Sur, but isn't working in Monterey.

tell application "System Events" tell its application process "ControlCenter" tell its menu bar 1 click its menu bar item "barmar" end tell tell its window "Control Center" tell its group 1 set btns to its buttons repeat with btn in btns if name of btn = "Administrator" then click btn end if end repeat end tell end tell end tell end tell

It gets the following error:

System Events got an error: Can't get group 1 of window "Control Center" of application process "ControlCenter". Invalid index."
number -1719 from group 1 of window "Control Center" of application process "ControlCenter"

The list of users is popping up, but it's failing on "tell its group 1".

Enter password on macOS when smart card is available

Posted: 23 Dec 2021 02:38 PM PST

I have a Yubikey with PIV enabled and paired with my MacBook. I also use Touch ID to unlock when available. But Touch ID requires the password to re-enable from time to time (e.g. not unlocked for 48 hours, etc.). In this case, I can't enter my password without unplugging the Yubikey (I can enter the PIN to unlock, of course. But that won't re-enable Touch ID). Is there a way to enter the password instead of PIN without unplugging the smart card?

How can I keep a local folder that is also syncing with iCloud

Posted: 23 Dec 2021 02:57 PM PST

I have a local folder where I keep some projects, I want it to be syncing in an iCloud folder but still have it as a local folder.

I've tried symlinks but the problem is that the folder will be deleted from my local machine and then will only exists on the iCloud folder.

Is there any way to have a copy of that folder on ICloud and syncing?

Change shortcut for Shift+command+Q hotkey on Mac 12 Monterey

Posted: 24 Dec 2021 01:28 AM PST

I'd like to disable the default action of shift+ Command + Q hotkey so that I could set up a different shortcut for it in apps. This hotkey shows the below popup which I can't seem to override:

enter image description here

I tried this approach but didn't work for v12.1 Monterey.

And with menu title: https://i.imgur.com/JR1vcKM.png

I also tried BettertouchTool but that app globally disables this hotkey so I can't remap it to some app-specific shortcuts.

What is the javascript equivalent of the applescript run command?

Posted: 23 Dec 2021 06:07 PM PST

I want to create a script for opening an app in nonstandard location quickly. With AppleScript, the app can be started with:

tell application [app path] to run

I want to do the same using javascript cause I am more familiar. But Application([app path]).run() does not work. In fact, the Application object does not seem to have any attributes.

Deleted Recovery partition (T2 chip Macbook pro). Can not boot to recovery. Getting Error -2003f

Posted: 23 Dec 2021 09:43 PM PST

I have been trying for a few days, but I have not been able to get my mac into Recovery mode. I formatted the laptop and erased data from Mac utility also deleting macOs base system, the recovery partition. I bought the Macbook Pro 2019 used. Last time it had my iCloud id. I wanted to resell it. Now I have tried more than 20 times to get into recovery Command + R or Command + Option + R. I get error -2003f sometimes similar -1000f. 1005f (different number of same error) and it keeps failing after loading for few minutes. Tried with 2 different WiFi networks, but with the same issue.

Mac-error

I looked at Youtube videos and internet postings mentioned to boot via USB but can't boot, it displays a "stop" screen. In some forum its mentioned that boot through usb might be disabled. It's getting really frustrating. I have been trying for a week and no fix.

Does anyone have any Idea? I am in a country where there is no Apple store unfortunately. Any suggestion how to fix this?

New MacBook Pro will not allow for Bluetooth file push into it from other device

Posted: 23 Dec 2021 08:13 PM PST

I own two MacBook Pro computers:

  1. MacBook Pro built in 2012, running macOS Catalina Version 10.15.7.
  2. MacBook Pro built in 2021, running macOS Monterey Version 12.0.1.

I have a Bluetooth-capable Raspberry Pi running Ubuntu Linux. I am interested in using the OBEX Object Push service to push a file into both of the MacBook Pro computers. I can connect both computers to the Raspberry Pi: Complete collection of properly connected receivers to the Pi

BUT, even though my 2012 MacBook Pro allows pushing of files to it:

2012 allows files

The new 2021 MacBook Pro does not:

2021 does not allow files

Why?

I have checked that in both computers file sharing is enabled. I even wrote a script to explore services offered by the new computer:

import bluetooth  import sys    nearby_devices = bluetooth.discover_devices(lookup_names=True, flush_cache=True, duration=20)  if not nearby_devices:    print('Could NOT find any device. Exiting...')    sys.exit(0)  print(nearby_devices)    for device in nearby_devices:    print(device)    service_matches = bluetooth.find_service()    for match in service_matches:      print(match)

Script behaves weird... as in sometimes it finds the new computer and sometimes it does NOT. When it does find it, this is what I get:

$ python3 plain_file_transfer_obex_new.py  [('F8:4D:89:61:D1:60', 'Eduardo's 2021 MacBook Pro')]  {'service-classes': ['1105'], 'profiles': [], 'name': 'OBEX Object Push', 'description': None, 'provider': None, 'service-id': None, 'protocol': 'RFCOMM', 'port': 10, 'host': 'F8:4D:89:61:D1:60'}  {'service-classes': ['1106'], 'profiles': [], 'name': 'OBEX File Transfer', 'description': None, 'provider': None, 'service-id': None, 'protocol': 'RFCOMM', 'port': 15, 'host': 'F8:4D:89:61:D1:60'}  {'service-classes': ['1801'], 'profiles': [], 'name': 'GATT', 'description': None, 'provider': None, 'service-id': None, 'protocol': 'L2CAP', 'port': 31, 'host': 'F8:4D:89:61:D1:60'}  {'service-classes': ['1101'], 'profiles': [('1101', 258)], 'name': 'COM5', 'description': None, 'provider': None, 'service-id': None, 'protocol': 'RFCOMM', 'port': 3, 'host': 'F8:4D:89:61:D1:60'}  {'service-classes': ['110E', '110F'], 'profiles': [('110E', 261)], 'name': 'AVRCP Device', 'description': 'Remote Control Device', 'provider': None, 'service-id': None, 'protocol': 'L2CAP', 'port': 23, 'host': 'F8:4D:89:61:D1:60'}  {'service-classes': ['110C'], 'profiles': [('110E', 262)], 'name': 'AVRCP Device', 'description': 'Remote Control Device', 'provider': None, 'service-id': None, 'protocol': 'L2CAP', 'port': 23, 'host': 'F8:4D:89:61:D1:60'}  {'service-classes': ['110A'], 'profiles': [('110D', 259)], 'name': 'Audio Source', 'description': None, 'provider': None, 'service-id': None, 'protocol': 'L2CAP', 'port': 25, 'host': 'F8:4D:89:61:D1:60'}  {'service-classes': ['111F', '1203'], 'profiles': [('111E', 264)], 'name': 'Handsfree Gateway', 'description': None, 'provider': None, 'service-id': None, 'protocol': 'RFCOMM', 'port': 8, 'host': 'F8:4D:89:61:D1:60'}  {'service-classes': ['1200'], 'profiles': [], 'name': None, 'description': 'PnP Information', 'provider': None, 'service-id': None, 'protocol': None, 'port': None, 'host': 'F8:4D:89:61:D1:60'}

BUT, most often than not, it returns that it can't find any device, even though the new computer is connected. I noticed a difference between the old and the new and that is that the new has the AirDrop feature, which I have disabled, yet no luck. Also, I have tried all steps laid out here by the Apple Support team.

Is there any step I am missing to execute on the new MacBook that would allow this besides enabling Bluetooth file sharing on System Preferences?

Trying to reinstall macOS (after wiping HD) but can't get past Apple ID and Safari Help Page will NOT open iCloud to let me login!

Posted: 23 Dec 2021 02:24 PM PST

Basically what the title says. I have a 2009 MacBook Pro and recently wiped the disk to be able to start new. After wiping, I went to redownload Yosemite and of course got the "This item is temporarily unavailable" error after entering my Apple ID.

I did some internet searches and read that a lot of people have gotten past this error by restarting, clicking on Get Help Online, going to icloud.com and logging in with their own Apple ID. After trying again usually they were successful.

I've tried this multiple times in recovery mode and regularly, and every time it says Safari cannot open this page. 100% connected to my own WiFi, yet I don't know how to login and eventually get past this part because I can never open the web page.

Installed a password manager and now safari won't autofill

Posted: 23 Dec 2021 09:02 PM PST

I installed a password manager from the App Store and since then my autofill in Safari has stopped working. I cannot uninstall the application as I do not have root permission. Does anyone know how to turn my autofill back on?

I have looked at the autofill tab under safari > preferences but the options there are blanked out so I cannot turn them on.

I am using macOS Catalina

Can I transfer only a few things by using migration assistant?

Posted: 23 Dec 2021 11:06 PM PST

So, I just recently got an M1 MacBook. I'm currently typing this on a mid-2014 Intel core MacBook Pro that's running on Yosemite. I wanted to transfer all my files into the new MacBook, however, I realized that it would take way too long, and I have a lot of junk that I don't want on my new MacBook.

Is there a way to transfer only specific things that I want through migration assistant? Mainly some downloaded music from iTunes and some folders, not too many things (though it would probably be a few GB's.) but I don't want everything.

No option to send Photos to iCloud [closed]

Posted: 24 Dec 2021 03:03 AM PST

I want to backup the photos I have in an iPhone 8 (iOS 14.6) with iCloud, but I don't see the option anywhere.

In Settings -> Apple ID -> iCloud, I see a list of apps using iCloud, with toggles to enable or disable it for each app, but Photos doesn't show there. If I search "iCloud" in the search bar in settings, it shows "Photos | Apple ID -> iCloud", but when I select it, it shows me that same list that I mentioned above. If I go to Settings -> Photos, I also don't see any option to sync them with iCloud. And if I select any picture, it also doesn't show my any option to send it to iCloud. In icloud.com -> Photos, it tells me to go to iCloud photos in my device and turn it on, but like I said, I don't see that option.

How can I enable it?

View local IP for connected device on hotspot

is there a way in which I can view the local IP address for a device connected to the hotspot that I make with my iPhone? I want to do this because I want to view the desktop of a Raspberry Pi that I share my mobile data with using VNC Viewer (and I need its local IP address for this). Thanks in advance!

SD card not detected through a USB hub on a newer intel-based Mac

How can I avoid iTerm trying to scp a file when ⌘-clicking it?

Posted: 23 Dec 2021 02:01 PM PST

I am working with a developer setup so that I run my code in a docker container and be able to edit it locally (via volume). Local path is e.g. /path/to/my/project while inside docker container it is /app/source. Say I have a file relative to the project called app/models/team.rb.

On an error in the container I see an output like this:

/app/source/app/models/team.rb:13:in my_method...

iTerm seemed to be smart about the open on -click such that it underlined only the app/models/team.rb:13 (incl. line number) when I hover over the a of app (unfortunately only on the first character), and opened the local file in my editor (VSCode). That was already great.

I now added an iTerm profile that identifies when a session is running inside docker (greedy: auto profile switching checking for "&docker") and sets the hostname and path via Triggers and regex (besides colors etc). This also works fine.

However now when I hover over the filename, the whole path is underlined and when I -click, iTerm tries to download via scp (which fails).

How can I avoid iTerm to try to scp the file and make it realize again how to load the local file?

I already tried not to set the hostname, but this results in iTerm not providing anything anymore for opening. When I don't set the path then it's working like before of course, but I'd like to have this information of the docker container in the status bar.

Shortcuts-app automation to prevent iPhone screen from going to sleep

Posted: 23 Dec 2021 11:29 PM PST

I was recently playing around a bit with the new Shortcuts app on the iPhone.

Is there an action to "prevent screen from going to sleep". Ideally, I'd want to activate it when a certain app is running. While the condition is easy to set, I can't find any way to then assign a "prevent sleeping" action.

How to save sent messages in Outlook to the same folder as message being replied to?

Posted: 23 Dec 2021 06:04 PM PST

If I am replying to an email in Folder "TEST", how do I get a reply to automatically go to the Folder "TEST" as opposed to the Sent folder? This helps with productivity so that I don't have to move the responses to the folders they are in. If the message responding to resides in the inbox, the response will go to the Sent folder and can be moved to another folder at another time.

How to disable ellipsis autocorrect on macOS?

Posted: 24 Dec 2021 12:27 AM PST

Every time i write ... in a text editor like TextEdit or Coda, Lion has started replacing it with a single Ellipse character, which doesn't encode to HTML. This started after I upgraded to Lion and happens across multiple programs. This persists in the latest Big Sur betas.

Any idea how to stop it?
