In Mail, replying to a listserve picks my wrong email address

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 07:21 AM PST

When I start a new e-mail or reply to an e-mail, the mail picks my default e-mail address.

But when I reply to a mail list, it fills in my AppleID e-mail address (which the mail list doesn't recognize). I have to remember to change it by hand.

This started when I created a new ID on my M1 iMac and deleted the old ID that had some problems after I converted from my old iMac.

I'm wondering if there is a setting somewhere that is specific to that list.

Why are many files and folders greyed out in Finder?

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 07:14 AM PST

When I navigate in Finder (or in File Save/Open windows) I often see various files and folders are shown in grey. I can navigate them as normal, so what does this mean?

Is there any way to find out the date and time of the deletion of a permanently deleted photo from iPhone?

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 10:00 AM PST

Is there any (theoretical) way to find out the date and time of the deletion of a permanently deleted photo (or video) from iPhone with iOS 15 installed? Does phone's operating system store such data?

Increase time/number of APFS local snapshots?

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 06:05 AM PST

I'm not using Time Machine on my laptop (don't worry, I have an alternative backup strategy in place); but I'm wondering if I could still save APFS localsnapshots.

I've created a LaunchAgent that runs tmutil snapshot every 24 hours, but the OS seems to get rid of the previous snapshot on a similar 24 hour cycle, so that there is only ever one snapshot. I can make additional snapshots within a 24 hour period, but they'll get removed whenever MacOS tidies up the snapshots.

Is it possible to increase the length of time that local snapshots are stored for? Or any reasons why that's bad/pointless?

(Most other questions on the subject are how to reduce the number/frequency...!)

Command + Click doesn't work right after moving mouse

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 04:59 AM PST

After setting up my new MacBook Pro, I realized one annoying behavior that I had never seen before. If I move my mouse via the trackpad and then command-click on anything (usually a link on a web browser, e.g. Safari or Brave), the click won't be invoked at all. It only gets triggered if I wait a second or two before command-clicking.

Moving the mouse via trackpad and then normal clicking on something works fine, however.

This does not happen with an external mouse. If I move my mouse and then command-click on a link, then the click is always triggered.

Is there any type of macOS setting that I perhaps accidentally enabled which is causing this problem to occur?

Kernel panic MacBook Pro Mid 2014

iCloud stuck on "uploading X items (Y of Y)" - Monterey 12.1

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 06:18 AM PST

I hope this can be an interesting topic also for those not affected by it. Some context first: MacBook Pro 2016 (15"), macOS Monterey 12.1, iCloud+ 200GB subscription. While it may happen from time to time for iCloud to get stuck during upload, this has been happening to me quite frequently ever since upgrading to Monterey. Syncing works normally, but iCloud seems to be processing an increasingly large amount of files which are marked as "to upload". Looking in Finder there is no dashed cloud, and I just see this: enter image description here enter image description here

Now, what have I already done? Restart Mac; shut down wait and boot; reinstall macOS; boot in Safe Mode; signed out of iCloud > restart > sign in (with the included pain of having to sync again 100+GB of data); nothing seems to have a definitive healing effect.

The only thing that seems to work around it, and that may lead to a cause is: Turn off Wi-Fi, wait until all system has gone offline Restart Mac, wait until all login items are loaded (and have realised there's no connectivity) Turn on Wi-Fi, wait and do not launch any apps, just launch Finder Here you will see the items count slowly but steadily declining until it all syncs back to normality. It appears to me that something has gotten stuck, or that something is keeping some files from uploading. I have used two utilities (Consolation and Cirrus) to browse the log and indeed when this happens iCloud seems to be stuck in a loop, but no relevant info is present there.

For records, I have a pretty fast WiFi (up to 600/250 Mbps), but I have also suspected the ISP doing something I have no idea how to check that is boggling my connectivity.

Has anyone encountered this issue, or does anyone have an idea of what could be going on here?

Is there an Apple-approved/recommended procedure to get out of it? Log out/in is no longer an option for me as it didn't solve it.

Thank you

Metadata not showing in Finder window for images on external drive

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 07:56 AM PST

I have two Macs: an Intel Mac mini (2018, running Catalina 10.15.7 I think) and an M1 MacBook Pro (2020, running Big Sur 11.6.1). I have an external SSD which I use for lots of work stuff.

On both computers, when I open a local Finder window (in Column mode) and select an image, the preview area on the right shows me a selection of metadata about any image I select: dimensions, camera make, etc. This is what I see on the MacBook for a picture on the local drive, for example:

On the mini, this also holds true for files on the external SSD – but not on the MacBook. On the MacBook, this is what I see:

No metadata. Doesn't appear in Get Info either. (There is metadata in this file; the preview area looks like this for all image files on the external drive.)

Essentially the same issue was troubling someone on Reddit three years ago, but that thread didn't seem to lead to any kind of answer. I can't seem to find anything else describing this issue.

Like the asker there, my external SSD is also not excluded from Spotlight, but unlike theirs, it has a different formatting: the internal drive is APFS, while the external one is exFAT. This is also the case on the mini where it works fine, though, so that doesn't seem to be the issue in and of itself.

So what might be causing metadata from not appearing for files on external drives and is there a way to fix it to get my metadata back?

Mac connected to iPhone but no internet

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 09:40 AM PST

My mac is connected to my iPhone through USB but I cannot access to internet. I've Googled on this subject but all I can find is very basic advice like "reset your connection" or "Have you tried to turn id off and on again".

How do I diagnose the connection ?

I'm looking for tools both on mac and iPhone that are able to show what's going when mac is trying to connect. It can be terminal commands. I can install terminal on iPhone if necesseray.

Mac cannot resolve DNS on WiFi, but works fine on cellular tethering

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 05:16 AM PST

I have consulted the questions/answers here. But it seems nothing is working.

  • I can ping 8.8.8.8, but I cannot ping www.google.com.
  • nslookup www.google.com 8.8.8.8 and dig @8.8.8.8 www.google.com is not working.
  • I have changed the DNS to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. It's not working too.
  • I have try to locate the file System/.../com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist. The file is there and nothing is wrong.
  • I have make sure that /etc/resolver has nothing (actually, the folder resolver isn't even there).
  • My iPhone, which is connected to the same wifi, can browse the internet just fine.
  • This Mac can browse from the same wifi yesterday just fine.
  • When I change my Mac connection to iPhone tethering 4G, only then it works fine (then I write this question).

How can I resolve this?

Unable to add apps to Security & Privacy Preference on MacOS Mojave

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 07:23 AM PST

Yesterday. I cloned my hard drive to my SSD for use. One of the essential apps I need to use is EVKey which works fine with no issue before.

After I boot up the SSD, I notice that I am not able to add it to Preference which is needed for it to work at all. This app works out of the box back on my Mojave installation on the hard drive so I'm confused on what happened.

I tried all tcc reset commands but none of them work, I even disabled SIP which then everything works but it immediately broke after I enabled SIP back. I tried to find the TCC.db file but such file doesn't exist on my mac. Can somebody help me with this? I'm confused as hell

Is there an alternative to whiptail for macOS?

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 06:48 AM PST

I would like to try out a shell script that makes use of whiptail, but I am on a MAC and whiptail doesn't seem to exist there. Does anyone know if there exists a drop-in alternative (like, for example exa for ls)?

This is the script I would like to test out (It's a WP-CLI script that would allow me to select local WordPress installs, using a dialog. Found it at the bottom of this page):

#!/bin/bash    WP_TOP_PATH="/home/"  MENU_TEXT="Choose an installation"  GAUGE_TEXT="Searching for WordPress"    declare -a MENU  WPS="$(wp --allow-root find "$WP_TOP_PATH" --field=version_path)"  WP_TOTAL="$(wc -l <<< "$WPS")"  WP_COUNT="0"    while read -r WP; do      WP_LOCAL="${WP%wp-includes/version.php}"        NAME="$(cd "$WP_LOCAL"; sudo -u "$(stat . -c %U)" -- wp --no-debug --quiet option get blogname)"      if [ -z "$NAME" ]; then          NAME="(unknown)"      fi      MENU+=( "$WP_LOCAL" "$NAME" )        echo "$((++WP_COUNT * 100 / WP_TOTAL))".  done <<< "$WPS" > >(whiptail --gauge "$GAUGE_TEXT" 7 74 0)    WP_LOCAL="$(whiptail --title "WordPress" --menu "$MENU_TEXT"  $((${#MENU[*]} / 2 + 7)) 74 10 "${MENU[@]}" 3>&1 1>&2 2>&3)"    if [ $? -ne 0 ] || [ ! -d "$WP_LOCAL" ]; then      echo "Cannot find '${WP_LOCAL}'" 1>&2      exit 100  fi    echo "cd ${WP_LOCAL}"

Can I have more than 2 outs on a Multi-Output Device

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 09:59 AM PST

I'm using a loopback audio device called BlackHole 16ch which has 16 ins and 16 outs and I have a USB Audio Interface with 2 ins and 4 outs. Here are the devices:

UMC204HD 192k

Blackhole 16ch

I want to create a Multi-Output device with my Audio Interface as the master device and the BlackHole device as a mirrored device, but when I create it, it is created with only 0 ins and 2 outs:

Multi-Output Device

I want to use the Blackhole device to route audio into OBS while being able to monitor Ableton Live Cue Out in my headphones from my USB device's outputs 3 and 4

It seems that Multi-Output devices are limited to a single stereo pair though, which is frustrating. Is there a good workaround?

I have tried Rogue Amoeba's Loopback Audio that is flexible enough to route in the way I want, but introduces quite noticeable latency to my Headphone monitors.

AppleScript extract before delimiter from result of shell script

I would like to extract name from text list.

Result from do shell shell command:

set Clist to do shell command "ls ./"

Is:

I need John Jane Doe Joe from that list in this format:

John, Jane, Doe, Joe

How can I achieve this?

Here is Full script.

If I display dialog theNames it shows as I expected. But I run with shell script echo theNames it shows nothing. I need to use theNames variable to curl post.

Can't find AirPlay on macOS High Sierra

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 06:02 AM PST

I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro with macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 installed.

I have just found out that my Smart LG TV with webOS has AirPlay incorporated so, I would like to mirror my MacBook Pro screen on my TV.

However I can't find AirPlay on my MacBook. Already searched for some solutions on Google but the only option that I found was to go to Screen Settings on System Preferences and turn on "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" which it is. However the AirPlay icon doesn't appear in the Menu Bar.

Does anyone know how to solve this? Is my MacBook too old to support AirPlay?

Is it possible to add the noatime mount option to /System/Volumes/Data?

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 03:18 AM PST

I run a server farm of Mac minis. For performance and SSD-longevity reasons, I have (≤ Mojave) partitioned the SSD in APFS and mounted the new partition with the noatime option, and confine builds to that partition. Now that Catalina and beyond have the /System/Volumes/Data partition as part of the OS, I am wondering if there is a way to enable the noatime option for that partition without digging into /etc/fstab, i.e. in an Apple-sanctioned way.

Finder does not open URL to file path

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 03:00 AM PST

in the past, I used to click an URL to a local file in any application (e.g., TextEdit) and the finder or Path Finder would open.

An example for such an URL is file:///Users/username/Library/Mobile%20Documents/com~apple~Keynote/Documents/hgs%20demo.key, that points in fact to a file on iCloud.

Now, when I click on such a link from say TextEdit (but also other software like in the notes section of a task in OmniFocus), nothing happens anymore. When I paste it into the URL field of a browser, the file does open however.

Is there a way on macOS to set applications that open certain kinds of URLs?

For example, OmniFocus "knows" / is associated with omnifocus:///...

→ Can I tell the Finder (or Path Finder) to be associated with file:///... (such that it would open a window with the associated path)? Or how can I re-enforce this association?

Thanks for your help.

MacOS Detects Aftermarket SSD But Doesn't In Recovery Mode

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 10:08 AM PST

I've been using a 2014 MacBook Pro on the latest OS (now Big Sur) successfully for awhile with an aftermarket SSD installed. I decided to clean it to give away/sell so I logged out of iCloud and iMessage, reset the NVRAM per https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208496, and booted it up into recovery mode to erase the drive but discovered that recovery-mode disk utility is not detecting the boot drive, just the recovery partition. The machine still boots up normally and successfully and disk utility in the OS displays the boot drive just fine...but obviously I can't erase it from within the OS!

When resetting the NVRAM, it played the startup chime 3-4 times or so in the span of me holding down the required keys for 20 seconds.

I've already run disk utility's "First Aid" on all containers listed but the same behavior persists.

Disk utility in the OS shows an APFS System Volume and a separate APFS Data Volume that both show the same full capacity as my SSD: A screenshot of a Disk Utility window

Any ideas on what I can do to get recovery-mode disk utility to recognize my SSD?

EDIT: This is an internal Kingston A2000 M.2 NVME SSD being used in conjunction with a Sintech NGFF M.2 nVME SSD adapter.

In the recovery environment, the terminal commands diskutil list and diskutil apfs list output:

-bash-3.2# diskutil list /dev/disk0 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: Apple_partition_scheme *1.3 GB disk0 1: Apple_partition_map 30.7 KB disk0s1 2: Apple_HFS OS X Base System 1.3 GB disk0s2 /dev/disk1 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: untitled *5.2 MB disk1 /dev/disk2 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: untitled *524.3 KB disk2 /dev/disk3 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: untitled *524.3 KB disk3 /dev/disk4 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: untitled *524.3 KB disk4 /dev/disk5 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: untitled *524.3 KB disk5 /dev/disk6 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: untitled *524.3 KB disk6 /dev/disk7 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: untitled *6.3 MB disk7 /dev/disk8 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: untitled *2.1 MB disk8 /dev/disk9 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: untitled *1.0 MB disk9 /dev/disk10 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: untitled *524.3 KB disk10 /dev/disk11 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: untitled *524.3 KB disk11 /dev/disk12 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: untitled *1.0 MB disk12 /dev/disk13 #: TYPE NAME SIZE IDENTIFIER 0: untitled *6.3 MB disk13 -bash-3.2# diskutil apfs list diskutil: did not recognize verb "apfs"; type "diskutil" for a list

Preview an archive contents without extracting it

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 05:01 AM PST

less command on Ubuntu allows to peek inside different kinds of archives from terminal. For example, all of these commands would show me the list of files in each of the four archives:

less archive.zip less archive.tar.gz less archive.tar.bz2 less archive.7z

On MacOS, I can use vim for this. However, this is less convenient, because Vim requires four buttons to be pressed to exit it (:q + return) instead of one (q).

Is there an equivalently fast way to see list of files in archives for MacOS?

Fixing Night Shift incompatibility with external monitors

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 06:55 AM PST

If you use an external monitor for your Mac of any shape or size and recently updated to macOS Sierra 10.12.4, chances are you've had some trouble with Night Shift.

Common issues include:

  • the inability to configure Night Shift from your external monitor
  • Night Shift being impossible to disable (as a result of the former)
  • a substantial loss of colour quality (as a result of both of the former happening at once on some connection or screen types, most commonly DVI-D to VGA, DisplayPort, and LCD screens of all kinds.)

How do you get past these issues? Is there a way to enable access to the Night Shift pane on any display?

How can I rename Desktops / Spaces in macOS?

How can I give each space a custom meaningful name?

What can I do when my Time Machine password is not accepted, although it's correct?

Posted: 28 Dec 2021 03:24 AM PST

Having troubles with a botched system upgrade on OS X 10.10.3, I tried to restore my MacBook Pro, 15" Early 2011 version, using an encrypted Time Machine backup made on an external USB drive.

The backup is in working order; I can boot from it just fine. However, when I try to restore from a previous backup version through the system restore feature, I am asked for my Time Machine backup volume, and when I click the external drive, and enter the password, there's a dialog saying the password is wrong.

But it isn't.

I am a hundred percent certain it's the correct password. It can't be copy-pasted, unfortunately, but I've typed it often enough to know it's correct. And when I finally got to boot the Mac after the – what I thought was – a botched update, I checked my Keychain to verify that the Time Machine password was actually the one I had used previously.

Has this ever happened to anyone, and is there any solution to this, apart from maybe creating an entirely new Time Machine volume and, gasp, not encrypting it?
