How to disable rogue extensions causing a late 2014 iMac 27 with 5k screen to go black when not in safe mode

I have an late 2014 iMac 27 5k that has a black sleep screen issue.

I got it refurbished, it arrived with BigSur installed, the screen would go black every time certain videos where been played (especially in safari browser)

I re-installed the original system that came with the late 2014 iMac (Mac OS X 10.10 (14A389) Yosemite) but because its as useless to even browse the net I went straight to testing Mojave, Catalina and BigSur aka BigBrotha, all which had black screens during video playback or multiple graphic images open.

My tests included reboots into Apple diagnostics and using Etrecheck, all which indicated NO PROBLEM as well as reset SMC, pram etc yet the black screen persisted.

The only times in which the black screen never happens is in safe mode or rebooting with the power button down before connecting the cable which results in a loud blasted fan in the background, so the screen works and I believe its some driver-extension.

Can anyone here advise on what I can do to isolate this issues and resolve it? Cheers

My Mac air mid 2012 and running on Mac Lion The AppStore cannot connect after many attempts to fix it. Failed I then went on YouTube to find ways to update to High sierra and Catalina on unsupported mac. Everything was going fine until when I have to do installation of installer. I always got this message. Error " check your internet connection and try again". Please help me out.

How do you use the open verb in Image Events using AppleScript?

According to the dictionary for Image Events, the open verb is supposed to return a document object. This is also how it's used in multiple online examples.

However, when I try to use it, the script correctly opens the file in Preview, and does not return anything. Even when I try the following example, from Apple's own documentation, I get a "Can't get properties of missing value." number -1728 from properties of missing value.

How are you meant to get an image object from an existing file in order to manipulate it with other actions from Image Events?

I'm on Big Sur 11.6.2 in case this doesn't affect older/newer releases.

I have an M1 Macbook. Is there any way to run a MacOS VM emulating an Intel processor, such that the guest OS basically behaves like an Intel Macbook?

Sidebar connected iPad crashes OS networking

I use Sidecar with a 2019 16" MBP (Monterey 12.1) and an 12.9" iPad Pro (iPadOS 15.2). The connection is over USB with an Apple USB-C Lightning cable. Lately, I've noticed that when the Sidecar connection is lost, either due to the display sleeping or the cable being bumped, all networking connectivity is lost. This happens about 50% of the time.

At this point, the iPad will no longer reconnect. Apps that have network connectivity begin to hang. The spinning beachball begins to take over. I've tried shutting down the network adapter in Terminal using sudo ifconfig en0 down but then Terminal hangs. The Mac requires a hard reset.

I've looked in the logs but I haven't been able to identify anything that could be related. I also don't know what the Sidecar system is called to refine my search for log entries.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this issue? Has anyone else encountered a similar problem?

Does anyone know of software that can set a mac's resolution to only part of the screen?

My macbook got knocked off the table ~6 months ago and landed on its corner and dented. A few days ago about 30 rows of pixels on that same side went dead.

It's not enough for me to want to rush out and get it fixed, but I'm wondering if I can somehow just turn those pixels off

iPhone connection to macbook reconnects over fifty times in about one minute then is steady

I have a 2015 Macbook pro and have not found any charger cable that can connect to an iPhone 6s without incident. The behavior is a rapid connect/disconnect cycle at about a one second cadence that lasts approximately sixty seconds. After that series of cycles for some reason a steady connection is established and :

  • charging starts normally
  • photos can be transferred

I have tried a half dozen highly rated cables on amazon; they all behave the same way. Also both usb ports on the macbook pro have the same behavior.

What might be happening here and is there any better fix than waiting the sixty seconds (which is actually acceptable now that I am aware of it) ? Note that the wifi network on the macbook pro is also affected: the internet gets reset each of those times as well.

update this last time was 124 reconnections in 120 seconds and then stable

Have I been hacked?! Mac terminal found open!

Please could someone help. I found a terminal window open with the below.

I ran /bin/bash -x and it looks like VMware was accessed and GPG tools.

It also added something suspicious to my login items... have I been hacked?! Also who is James

Automatically lock screen, but do not go to sleep, when lid is closed

In a similar, but not duplicate, vein to Listening to music with MacBooks lid closed, I'd like to be able to listen to music with my 2019 MacBook Pro's lid closed. But I can't accept the compromise of losing the automatic screen lock by simply having the MacBook not go to sleep.

In contrast, if I activate screen lock manually (I have it mapped to the Touch Bar, so through whatever mechanism that is), my music keeps playing. I can play/pause it using the touchbar or my Bluetooth headphones and control volume this way too. This is exactly the experience I want to have, but I want to be able to have it with the lid closed.

It would appear that pmset, which is what lets you disable sleep on lid close, is not the only family of tools I want here, because it is about managing power states and not about monitoring any hardware events per se. I don't really care what power state my MacBook is in when the lid is closed. (I mean I hope it's not hogging the battery too bad just playing some audio, but I don't have any hard drives I'm worried about being in use while moving it around or anything like that - it doesn't need to be asleep and I trust it to not burn itself up that way because this is a nice operating system.) I just want lid close to trigger a screen lock, basically, and also not a sleep.

Under Linux-y type environments this can be achieved (not sure how but I know there are lid events for dbus, which is part of the backbone of all modern Linux display managers), but I'm clueless as to how to achieve this particular thing.

Remap key combos to symbol characters

For my home workstation I use a Moonlander which lets you add different layer-shifting to any key, and define each of the layers with whatever character desired.

For example, I'd have a symbols layer triggered by holding the "f" key. From there, The "j" key would produce the "(" character, k would produce the ")" character, etc.

I realize that's the firmware on the keyboard doing the work there, but is there any way to get this type of custom behavior on the base laptop keyboard?

The minimum iOS SDK requirement for apps submitted to the App Store at present is iOS 14 SDK

Is there a minimum supported iOS SDK version in general for devices running iOS 15?

For example for enterprise apps not distributed via the App Store?

We have a current MBP 16" connected to a Dell monitor that is not providing enough power to adequately charge it. Is there any harm in connect both the monitor and the power cord, given they are both providing charge?

Is it possible to enable/disable Silent mode using Automation in Shortcuts on iPhone?

If not, is it possible to detect the position of the silent rocker switch?

I am not interested in toggling DND for this scenario.

I'm using the DisplayPort that came with the monitor, along with a USB C -> DisplayPort adapter that apparently supports 4k; however, I can't seem to choose any refresh rates when selecting the "Scaled" option in the Display properties. I've held down the Option key while selecting Scaled and, although it gives me more options, the Refresh Rate is still greyed out. Here's a screenshot:

What exactly am I supposed to do in order to "enable" 60hz? The monitor supports 240hz but I can't seem to get past 60hz here. I've even tried to select 4k since the adapter seems to only support 4k, but it still doesn't become available.

The monitor settings are using 240hz (can only select between 240hz and 120hz because 60hz is greyed out). Guessing I can't use 240hz on the Macbook Pro, but not even 120hz?

Mac Specs:

MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017 edition) macOS Big Sur Version 11.4

Cannot connect 2 different monitors through separate usb c cables

I've tried everything.

My setup is:

1 x MacBookPro 15" 2017

2 x Philips Brilliance 279P1/00

I'm trying to connect both of them through the USB C cables they came with. I can only connect one at a time.

Before you suggest, yes I've tried everything that can be found through google searches and searches on this stackexchange:

  • clicking on Detect Displays
  • turning the power on/off on external monitor
  • keeping my macbook through a separate charger
  • going in sleep mode
  • upgrade to Big Sur
  • not sleeping enough

Is it possible to long press on Apple Maps screen in CarPlay and get directions to that location?

Disabling Thunderbolt-related kernel extensions in the SSV on Big Sur (Random Crashes 2015 Retina MacBook Pro)

EDIT: Do not do this. This created a startup error that has now forced me to reinstall my OS from Internet Recovery.

I'm one of a number of MacBook Pro users unfortunately plagued by a longstanding issue apparently related to faulty power chips on the motherboard of my 2015 Retina MacBook Pro (most notably documented here as well as on a number of Macrumors threads and AD questions). It's my understanding that this issue affects the the 820-3662 and 820-3787 logic boards. For clarity's sake, I have methodically assessed and eliminated most other potential causes for the crashes, and when I initially diagnosed the problem, I went through all the typical steps including several fresh installs, EtreCheck, and an Apple hardware and software diagnostic (all unremarkable).

This problem has been reliably solved in the past by disabling several Thunderbolt-related kernel extensions on the SSV (and reportedly as well by this app, though I haven't tried it myself), which I've been doing every time I update the OS.

Probably against my better judgment, I updated to Big Sur, and after a bit of forum trawling (I am not a developer and much of this is over my head), my understanding is that Big Sur has, in the process of becoming more secure, made it much more difficult to write the SSV.

On advice from several threads and blog posts, including the following:

I've done the following:

  1. Boot into the Terminal in Recovery Mode (reboot holding Command-R and open Terminal under Utilities in the menu bar).
  2. mount -uw /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD (on my Mac, I understand nomenclature can vary).
  3. Navigate to the relevant folder with cd /Systems/Library/Extensions/
  4. Rename the relevant kernel extensions from the suffix .kext to .kext.BAK (disabling them) with mv AppleThunderboltNHI.kext AppleThunderboltNHI.kext.BAK, for example
  5. Repeating the above with each of the relevant kernel extensions - many users have been able to get by with just disabling the above, others have had to disable nearly all thunderbolt-related kernel extensions. Fortunately I don't actually use these functions on my MacBook. The list that I used this time comes from here and includes:
    • AppleThunderboltDPAdapters.kext
    • AppleThunderboltIP.kext
    • AppleThunderboltPCIAdapters.kext
    • AppleThunderboltEDMService.kext
    • AppleThunderboltUTDM.kext
    • and finally, the above-mentioned AppleThunderboltNHI.kext
  6. Disabled protections with csrutil authenticated-root disable
  7. "Blessed" the changes I've made in the snapshot I've been working with with sudo bless --folder /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/System/Library/CoreServices --bootefi --create-snapshot
  8. Rebooted into normal mode.

Thus far, seems like it's working (I've had no crashes) but I'll need to use the laptop for a week or so to tell - the crashes are fairly unpredictable.

I've posted this for two purposes:

  1. I hope that if this works, it's a useful resource for others that are less savvy, like myself.
  2. As mentioned, this is well above my head and I'm hoping someone can check my work and make sure I haven't done anything completely egregious. For example, do I need to re-enable the systems protections that I've disabled, or does that happen automatically when I reboot into normal mode?

iPhone works fine with car bluetooth for Playing Music but not working for Phone Calls

After upgrading to iOS 13.5, I am facing issue while connecting Bluetooth of my car. I am able to connect Bluetooth of car for music and phone calls but after 2-3 minutes Bluetooth for phone gets disconnected and only music is working. Please note I am able to play music continuously.

Please note this was working fine since last 1.5 years before upgrading iOS 13.5, I have upgraded to iOS 13.6 but I am still facing issue.

Also note that I haven't upgraded car music since the beginning, so I suspect that the issue introduced by iOS upgrade.

Macbook Pro fans spinning until I close the lid

TLDR : Fans randomly start spinning like crazy and calm down only if I close the lid.

Hello there !

At work, I have a MacBook Pro 15" mid-2015 (2,5GHz Intel Core i7, 16Gb 1600MHz DDR3). I have basically the same apps open all day long and it works fine with the CPU at roughly 50°C.

A few times a day, while I minded my business and doing nothing in particular, then fans start spinning very loudly (but the CPU temperature stays the same).

The first times it happened I thought there was something like the time machine working in the background but I checked and its not. Moreover, if I bear with it and don't do anything, they keep spinning like crazy for hours and never seem to calm down.

The weird part is : If I close the lid of my computer (which is plugged to another screen, so it doesn't shut down or anything), the fans calm down slowly. If I open the lid again while they're calming or when they're done, the problem doesn't come back immediately (but will eventually, a few hours later).

I've read about people having fans spinning WHEN closing the lid, but I don't know what to do about this problem in particular.

Any idea ? :D

How Can I view My local/offline Html file on Ipad

I have My HTML file saved in many locations on IPAD to try to launch it.

  1. In files. When i click on the html file, it shows a preview ( with an empty white page) since this step is not calling any links (js, css, etc) i tried to tap and hold to see if i can open it with safari also no luck, and i did some research about it. It says that you can not open html with safari or any other browser on ipad cause it will not call the links in the folder.

  2. I tried to open it in dropbox also. Again it shows a white empty page.

  3. I tried to launch it directly after downloading the file from we transfer (i sent it to myself) also no option to launch it. It only gives me the option to save it.

  4. I used to save it to files, icloud or dropbox. I previously downloaded an app called documents by readdle. Locate the file. When i used to click on it, it used to work perfectly fine. Within the app itself. No browser needed. But suddenly after updating the app all the html folders i have stopped working.

  5. I also tried documents pro app: no luck

  6. goodreader app: it opens the file but freezes and the app stops responding after.

  7. I also didn't find a way from safari to locate a specific file and open it.

so i reached the i "give up" phase. And i am searching for help 😅

If there is only the Macbook 12 inch USB-C charger nearby, can it be used to charge other USB-C devices, such as any Android phones that also use USB-C? (will it be "too powerful" and damage other devices?)

Vice versa, if there is a Quick Charge 2.0 or 3.0 USB-C charger from other devices nearby, can it be used to charge the Macbook 12 inch?

The main concern is about whether it could damage the device or battery.

Can Touch ID for the Mac Touch Bar authenticate sudo users and admin privileges?

I wonder this because I'm considering getting a YubiKey which can do string input to password fields, but Touch ID for Macs may render it unnecessary.

Bluetooth lagging when Magic Mouse and a bluetooth speaker connected

I'm having problems with my Bluetooth on my MacBook Pro Retina early 2013 OS X 10.9.3

It is constantly losing connection for a few seconds with my Magic Mouse and my Bluetooth speaker (Bose Soundlink Mini) occasionally even resetting the connection so I have to reconnect both.

I started having this problem just recently but it's not the speaker's fault (I've tried others) or the mouse's fault—I've tried disconnecting it.

I have also tried restarting the computer, freeing some memory and so on...

Any ideas?

How can I get the newest version of cURL instead of the old 7.24 that Apple provides?

How can I transfer large files from Linux to iPad over a cable or wifi?

I am looking for a way to transfer large files to the iPad without using iTunes or pushing to and pulling from a remote server.

I run an Ubuntu laptop as my only OS at the moment and want to be able to transfer movies to my iPad. I currently transfer most of my files by way of the dropbox app which works well for small files but is quite slow for larger files and eats up my bandwidth. Ideally I'd like to be able to transfer over a cable or through WiFi.

Thanks for any tips.
