Weird Safari Search Bar Issues

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 11:13 PM PDT

Say for instance that I'm typing out a statement to search and I want to add addition words in the middle of that statement. The search bar would let me type the first letter and then the rest of the new word I would type would end up at the end of the statement instead of letting my continue type at my new insertion point in the middle. It only does this with Safari.

How can I install a Termux-like terminal app for iOS?

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 11:51 PM PDT

I would like an equivalent to Termux on iOS. It should in some way emulate a Linux command line with a full range of installable packages like apt and ideally even run Linux (as with Andronix), and be about as fast as the phone's hardware normally allows.

There is iSH but for some reason I find it quite slow, I don't know if it's built in some fundamentally different way than Termux.

Is there a good option for this (willing to jailbreak if necessary)?

Forward-delete with Logitech K380 keyboard on macOS

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 11:42 PM PDT

I am using a Logitech K380 keyboard with my MacBook Pro (13-inch, M1, 2020) running macOS Big Sur 11.6.

When I hold down the Function (fn) key while pressing the delete key on the built-in keyboard of the MacBook Pro, I get forward-delete action. That is, characters to the right (trailing) of the insertion point are removed.

On the K380, holding the Function (fn) key has no effect on the delete key. Characters to the left (leading) are always removed.

Why the difference is behavior? Is there a way to make get forward-delete with the K380? However, I would prefer not to install any software Logitech.

Correct packages installation without using Homebrew

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 03:24 PM PDT

I was reading this old post because I want to download a homebrew package without using brew : How to download a binary from brew without installing brew? but I'm stuck so I try to ask too.

I'm on homebrew formulae web page : https://formulae.brew.sh/formula/

So, I want to install the package tcl-tk to use Tkinter on my Mac (or any other package) so I search for it from search bar : https://formulae.brew.sh/formula/tcl-tk#default

My binary location on internet is written inside JSON file at : https://formulae.brew.sh/api/formula/tcl-tk.json

Now I need to download binary files linked in JSON file (3rd line in this case) :{"url":"https://downloads.sourceforge.net/project/tcl/Tcl/8.6.11/tcl8.6.11-src.tar.gz"

I think these must be placed somewhere inside /usr/local/Cellar/. For example I know that my binaries location should be something like : /usr/local/Cellar/tcl-tk/8.6...

Now, the question is : should I copy them there with a cp -R <package-name> /usr/local/Cellar/ or there is an installer somewhere that I can/must use? I think just copy them there isn't enough but maybe I'm wrong. Any suggestion?

MacOs Monterey having kernel panics occurring frequently

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 02:53 PM PDT

I am currently running MacOs Monterey Beta 8, and since updating to Beta 7, I've been having kernel panics almost everyday, where I put my mac to sleep and every time I wake it up it restarts. Even waking it up after 15 mins. I tried to boot it into safe mode but I didn't find anything wrong with and I don't get any error or crash reports. The last diagnostic Report I checked was

How to code sign hidden files?

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 01:55 PM PDT

I have a hidden dylib file that is preventing notarization. The LogFileURL indicates the file is not signed and does not have a valid time stamp.

I tried to sign the file separately using the path to the dylib:

--force --verify --verbose --sign "PFish (MyID)" /Users/fishbacp/Desktop/dist/My_App.app/Contents/Resources/sklearn/dylibs/libomp.dylib

which led to a "file not found error, not surprisingly, since the file is hidden.

When I enter

codesign --verify --verbose /Users/fishbacp/Desktop/dist/My_App.app

I'm informed

/Users/fishbacp/Desktop/dist/My_App.app: valid on disk

which I also find not surprising.

Is there a way to codesign a hidden file?

How to prefer displaying all chinese in kaiti instead of heiti

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 10:52 AM PDT

50% of all websites suddenly stopped working on my Mac

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 10:36 AM PDT

Today I restarted my Mac (macOS Catalina 10.15.4) and found that around half of all websites are not working.

How can I debug this further or even fix it?

Situation

Here is a short list of a few websites that are (not) working. I am not really seeing any pattern.

Working Not working
google.com stackoverflow.com
youtube.com github.com
wikipedia.org twitter.com
facebook.com amazon.com
microsoft.com yahoo.com

For the working websites everything is completely normal. For the not working websites my browser tells me ERR_ADDRESS_UNREACHABLE and nothing is loading at all.

The behavior seems to be the same for all working and not working sites respectively. So I am focusing on google.com and stackoverflow.com below.

What I have tried so far without any success:

  • different browsers
  • several restarts of my laptop
  • router restart
  • logging in as a different user
  • running the wireless diagnostics app, which claims that my connection has no problems
  • different DNS Servers (Google 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4, Cloudflare 1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1)

Further observations:

  • There are several other devices connected to the same wlan (even another Mac) and all can connect to all websites without any problems.
  • Earlier today microsoft.com was not working, now it is working.

Terminal outputs

I do not have too much experience with these command line tools, but maybe the output is helpful.

curl: working for some sites

curl is working for google.com

❯ curl https://google.com --output temp % Total % Received % Xferd Average Speed Time Time Time Current Dload Upload Total Spent Left Speed 100 220 100 220 0 0 1157 0 --:--:-- --:--:-- --:--:-- 1157

curl is not working for stackoverflow.com

ping: not working

ping is neither working for google.com nor stackoverflow.com. This confuses me a bit: I can access google.com in a browser, but not ping it.

Want to remove filevault prompt on shutdown/reboot

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 02:55 PM PDT

Whenever I'm logged in as a certain user and trigger a shutdown or restart, I get prompted to enable filevault. I have searched everywhere to find the hook that causes this prompt, but I can't find it.

I've searched all the LaunchDaemon and LaunchAgent directories I can find.

I've reviewed the output of launchctl find.

I've done other things in the past as well but I don't remember them all.

I have upgraded my computer and transfered my user account multiple times since this started happening. It seems to stick to my user account.

I believe this might have come from Symantec Endpoint Encryption that installed from my employer many years ago. But I've also tried all the uninstaller techniques I can find for that.

It appears after all the desktop stuff has gone away.

Any ideas for where else I can look for a hook that might trigger this?

Update: FileVault is not currently enabled on the disk and I do not want to enable it.

MacOS Big Sur does not accept SSH key

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 09:09 PM PDT

I am trying to perform a password-less access from a Linux system to a MacOS system using SSH private / public keys

I am generating the keys on the Linux system using

        ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096

and then copy the public key to my MacOS system using

        ssh-copy-id -i id_rsa <myuserid>@<apple-system>

Then I call

        ssh -v <myuserid>@<apple-system>

and I get different results when using Big Sur (Version 11.1) and Catalina (Version 10.15.7)!

On Catalina, everything works fine and I get access without a password prompt:

debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,password,keyboard-interactive debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Offering public key: /home/pi/.ssh/id_rsa RSA SHA256:MQmWsfb2P9X/LLeKfm2hG1QpnM2Fi9EaoWAnTKSSSck debug1: Server accepts key: /home/pi/.ssh/id_rsa RSA SHA256:MQmWsfb2P9X/LLeKfm2hG1QpnM2Fi9EaoWAnTKSSSck debug1: Authentication succeeded (publickey).

On Big Sur the same id_rsa failed:

debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,password,keyboard-interactive debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Offering public key: /home/pi/.ssh/id_rsa RSA SHA256:MQmWsfb2P9X/LLeKfm2hG1QpnM2Fi9EaoWAnTKSSSck debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,password,keyboard-interactive

I checked the file permissions on both system and they are identical und also the configuration file /etc/ssh/sshd_config is the same on both systems.

Is there anything else in Big Sur, which has to be changed to allow password-less access from a remote system? Any help is appreciated!

How can I enable “Sleep Mode” from iOS Shortcuts

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 03:06 PM PDT

I've got an iOS Shortcut that sets my alarm and turns off my lights but I also want it to turn on "Sleep Mode" on my iPhone and Apple Watch. This can manually be done by clicking the bed icon labelled "Sleep Mode" in the Control Panel (see pic below) but I can't for the life of me find how to do this using a shortcut. I can disable it in the morning with a shortcut when I cancel my alarm by turning off DND mode but turning on DND doesn't turn on the rest of Sleep Mode.

Anyone have any idea how to enable this from an iOS Shortcut?

How fix MacOS Mail so Gmail labels appear?

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 07:00 PM PDT

I recently bought a new MacBook Pro, and set up Mac Mail with my Gmail accounts. At first, when the mail was being imported, the labels for my emails listed in the list preview section of the Inbox / message browser appeared. Then, Mac ran an update for 10.15 (Catalina), and all of the labels for my emails listed in the list preview section of the Inbox / message browser disappeared.

I've ensured that the 'Show in IMAP' checkbox is ticked next to all of the labels I wish to see as folders in Apple Mail. It shows the mailbox but not the labels for the messages listed in the list preview section of the Inbox / message browser.

Any ideas on how to fix this? I've contacted Apple support, but they haven't provided any guidance.

What is "routined" and why is it eating my CPU?

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 02:58 PM PDT

After my fans started blazing, I checked top and found that a process named routined was using 60-70% cpu. Surprisingly, I found no information about this process via Google, other than a mention of it in relation to a keychain issue which doesn't apply to me.

Anybody know what this process is doing?

The process was owned by my user, but after killing it, it came back running as root. After a minute or so, the cpu usage droped to 0.

Not able to connect to DB(Deutsche Bahn) Wifi on ICE trains using Macbook Pro?

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 11:03 PM PDT

When I try to connect to WiFi on ICE using MacBook Pro, I am not prompted with a WiFi login screen. This is however not a problem on my iPhone and other devices but persists specifically on my MacBook Pro. I have also seen people asking the solution for the same problem on various websites/forums but in vain. I was wondering if there were any consistent solution or troubleshooting steps to follow to make it work?

iCloud reminders (web site) - missing features?

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 06:04 PM PDT

This Apple KB article implies that one can create new reminders lists, edit details of reminders set as alert time, change folders of reminders, etc.

https://support.apple.com/kb/PH12088?locale=en_US

However, I don't see any of these options. I can add new reminders and edit notes, but I can't do any of the other things it states.

Is the iCloud reminders web interface neutered now? I don't have the "+ at the top" the article refers to.

As far as I can see, the only things I can do on the iCloud web site are:

  • add remidners
  • add/modify notes on reminders
  • change list colors/appearance
  • show/hide completed

I don't think there are any other possible functions - ?

Was hoping to use iCloud on the web as an interim since the macOS desktop reminders app won't sync with iCloud until Catalina.

Here is a screen shot taken on macOS Mojave with Safari 13.0.1...looks the same in the current version of Chrome for macOS as well:

How can I install vpfit on a 64 bit macOS?

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 11:09 AM PDT

I am trying to install the Voigt profile fitting (vpfit) program on a 64 bit macOS machine.

I'm stuck on this. Kindly help if anyone had any luck with the installation.

Here is what I did:

*Port Install pgplot - https://guaix.fis.ucm.es/~ncl/howto/howto-pgplot (This part is working)

sudo port install xorg-server sudo port install pgplot sudo port -f activate libgcc9
  • • After the installation, make sure that the expected environment variables are properly set (at least PGPLOT_DIR must exist; PGPLOT_DEV is also quite useful). One can check this by executing: echo $PGPLOT_DIR echo $PGPLOT_DEV

Install Cfitsio - This part is working

sudo port install cfitsio +gcc7

Install VPFIT - THIS IS WHERE I'M STUCK

• Edit makefile

cfitsx = /usr/local/lib/cfitsio.a

pgpltx = /usr/local/lib//libpgplot.a

  • make vpmac

I am getting undefined symbols for architecture

Garage Band live transposing MIDI input

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 05:08 PM PDT

I have a MIDI instrument whose input I'd like to transpose live (ie. so the sound synthesized for it is transposed up a third from the actual input, for example).

I tried adding an AU Pitch Shift effect plugin to the track. This does allow me to do the transposition. But, since this effect works on the output audio signal and not the MIDI input (and does so in software) it is noticeably laggy (to the point where playing is annoying).

I did some investigation and found this article: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2426268. It's old (2010), but it discusses using MIDI Patchbay to create a fake virtual MIDI input with the transposition. The problem the OP faced there was that Garage Band still picked up the initial untransposed MIDI input (because it listens to all MIDI inputs for the current track; this seems to still be the case as I confirmed this by trying two MIDI instruments simultaneously). Since this question is older, do recent versions of Garage Band allow you to filter out certain MIDI tracks (making this approach possible)?

Ideally, I'd like to do the transpose live from within Garage Band. I also found in the editor (under score) the "Transpose" option (which for some reason is disabled under "Piano Roll"). However, this doesn't seem to have an effect on the live input.

tl;dr Is there a way to live transpose MIDI input that you are synthesizing/monitoring through Garage Band?

How switch Mac UK PC keyboard layout backslash \ and backtick ` to match normal UK PC layout

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 01:07 PM PDT

This is the normal UK PC Keyboard Layout:

enter image description here

We can see the backslash is on the left-bottom corner (right of shift).

But the mac configuration for UK PC layout, the backslash is on the left-top corner (left of the number 1), see the setting as follow:

enter image description here

So when I use both mac and windows together, this key always confuse me with different output!

UK layout keyboard is ISO standard and the Mac also detects ISO. The only issue is the key on the left of z is switched with the key on the left of 1.

The layout of the UK keyboard:

  1. the key on the left of z should be:\ and |
  2. the key on the left of 1 should be: ` and ¬

But mac switches them.

What is Apple's policy for supporting security updates on older versions of iOS?

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 04:00 PM PDT

Does Apple have a policy regarding how long they will continue to release and support security fixes for each iOS release?

I observe that many people complain about performance issues with iOS upgrades on their relatively "old" Apple devices. Therefore, before buying, I would like to foresee how long my device will be provided with security updates by Apple for its default iOS version.

I specifically wonder the date of end of security support for iOS 6 (its latest sub-version, probably 6.1.3).

Edit in 2019: I have came across a graphic showing Apple's support for older devices. This is not specifically about security updates, but still I think it is relevant and interesting.

Dig not returning authority section?

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 10:43 AM PDT

Digging wikipedia.com, on my Macbook Pro, returns:

$ dig wikipedia.com ; <<>> DiG 9.8.3-P1 <<>> wikipedia.com ;; global options: +cmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 40153 ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;wikipedia.com. I could swear, last week my computer returned an AUTHORITY SECTION + some additional sections.

Now, whenever I dig any site, I'm not getting the AUTHORITY SECTION.

I feel like something is broken, but I'm not sure what it is (if anything) and how to fix it.

Another example:

$ dig google.com    ; <<>> DiG 9.8.3-P1 <<>> google.com  ;; global options: +cmd  ;; Got answer:  ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 42853  ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 11, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 0    ;; QUESTION SECTION:  ;google.com. Last week, I'm pretty sure I was getting an AUTHORITY SECTION as well.

Any tips? Did I accidentally set a flag to limit what dig returns on my machine? If so, how I can revert back to showing everything?

Here's what I get when digging from my work computer:

$ dig wikipedia.com ; <<>> DiG 9.8.3-P1 <<>> wikipedia.com ;; global options: +cmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 5271 ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 1, AUTHORITY: 3, ADDITIONAL: 3 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;wikipedia.com. A part of me wonders if my home ISP (Comcast) or router is blocking something? Or, is my Mac at home set up differently than my Mac at work? Not sure how to test these theories.

Also, I could be mistaken that I ever did have dig working on my home laptop (I just don't remember for sure). Either way, I'm getting the results I want from my work Mac, and not from my laptop/home Mac. Why would the two differ?

How do I tell if the Flash Player Installer is a virus?

Posted: 10 Oct 2021 10:25 AM PDT

There's been a couple of trojans recently that imitate the Adobe Flash Player installer one of which is called OSX/flashback.A. (More info here) I've been wary of updating Adobe Flash Player due to this trojan. How do I tell if the installer is the real thing, or if it's just a trojan? Also, where does it come from? I'm pretty sure the DMG for the trojan downloaded automatically, opened the installer, and wanted me to install it.

I know that I can download the official installer from the Adobe website, and will probably do this. However, my questions remain.
