audio confort how to regulate avergae sound level (any sources) : automatic sound volume adjustement Posted: 23 Oct 2021 11:13 AM PDT how to always have the same average volume of sound whatever the source can be (web/mediaplayers/games/etc...etc...) ? I tryied to set /etc/pulse/default.pa referening to this troublshooting use-case list I m runing Debian 12 (sid) currently, but it is just the same. Doing that I just make a default volume starting level, but it is not what I need. What I really need is exactly : - if sound is to high over an average decibel value, then reduce it.
- if sound is to low below an average decibel value, then increase it.
- ignoring the kind of source is (I need that to be system-wide solution, maybe use a script as a daemon ?)
To be honest my first Idea was to do a AGC (automatic gain amplifier) in hardware plugged in the audio output, but on audio-electronic specialized forums they said it will be a little hard to build one efficiently & it might be very expensive too. So I had to think about a software solution first |

speedtest-cli Error: No such file or directory - /usr/local/var/homebrew/linked/speedtest Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:58 AM PDT I was using Ookla's speedtest-cli command line app just fine until recently when it started giving me an error: "ImportError: No module named speedtest". After a copious amount of research it led me to upgrade system files by doing a forced MACOS software update. Now the error when running speedtest-cli is Error: No such file or directory - /usr/local/var/homebrew/linked/speedtest The folder is indeed there. Confirmation: ls /usr/local/var/homebrew/linked/speedtest /usr/local/var/homebrew/linked/speedtest Steps to install speedtest-cli were followed to the letter from Ookla's website Steps to reproduce (with error): MyMAC:Source_Code me$ brew tap teamookla/speedtest MyMAC:Source_Code me$ brew update Already up-to-date. Cannot find/detect PS/2 mouse in old Debian. How to enable? Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:30 AM PDT I'm trying to configure XFree86 3.1.2 on my Debian 1.1 (buzz) distribution, but after configuring XFree86, I receive the error: Fatal server error: Cannot open mouse (No such device) when trying to start the X Server with startx . The problem doesn't seem to be with XFree86, but Debian 1.1 not seeing the PS/2 mouse device. The Debian install manual does not cover mice, and the manpages (man mouse ) only pertains to serial mice. I am using a Microsoft Optical Mouse v1.1 (USB) with the official Microsoft USB -> PS/2 adapter that came with it. This works perfectly well as being recognised as a PS/2 mouse in MS-DOS 6.22 on the same system being used for Debian. Serial mice are usually located at /dev/mouse but that does not exist (because I don't have a serial mouse). /dev/input/mice also does not exist. /dev/psmouse exists and is symlinked to /dev/psaux , but when I cat /dev/psmouse I get No such device . There is no gpm or gpm.conf that exists on this Debian version, and it's not old enough (June 1996) to pre-date PS/2 mice. The Linux kernel is version 2.0.0. If MS-DOS 6.22 can recognise this USB-PS/2 converted mouse as a PS/2 device, then I'm certain Debian can also. How do I enable and configure a PS/2 mouse to be recognised in Debian 1.1. (buzz), so that it can be recognised by XFree86? |

How to set up an optional DNS service for my home network? Posted: 23 Oct 2021 11:00 AM PDT I have a couple of Windows laptops, a Raspberry Pi 4 running Ubuntu, and an x86 box also running Ubuntu. Using DHCP reservation on my WiFi router (Apple Airport) I have given them all static IP addresses. Then on each machine I edited the hosts file and entered the names and IP addresses of all machines. I would like to improve that last part. I would like to run a DNS service on my Raspberry Pi so that I can avoid manually editing and updating the hosts file on each machine. I want to do it in such a way that if my home DNS service is down I can still access the Internet for web browsing etc. In other words, if my Raspberry Pi goes down it should not take my home internet with it. I also don't want to have to configure each PC to point it to the Raspberry Pi as the DNS service. So basically I want to run a DNS service on my Raspberry Pi, such that if the Pi is up all Windows PCs and other Ubuntu boxes discover the DNS service and use it for resolving local names, and if the Pi is down, the only thing that won't work is local name resolution. This seems like a need a lot of people would have, so hopefully someone has invented something to solve this problem. |

How to change the passphrase in `pass` program without reinitializing a pass store from scratch Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:07 AM PDT I'm using the pass application which I find really handy. What determines how files are ordered when using ls without sort? Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:43 AM PDT The order when using ls with -U flag is the same order that I get when using dirent.h library in C and display file names in a loop. When I display d_off member of the dirent struct the numbers appear to be in ascending order. Is the d_off the reason for the files' order and if so what is it exactly? I saw it being described as file offset but I'm not sure what that means. Thanks in advance |

SED and REGEX for EXIF renaming Posted: 23 Oct 2021 11:12 AM PDT I was unable to comment on this old post, How can I rename photos, given the EXIF data? but it had a comment that seemed exactly what I needed so I started a new post, I hope not bad form. I get what the code does, the piping from jhead through grep and SED... for i in *.JPG; do j=`jhead "$i" | grep date | sed 's/^File date[^:]\+: \(.\+\)$/\1/'`.jpg echo mv -i "$i" "$j" done I want a very similar outcome but I'd like to grunge the date a bit, ie. rename/output of: yyyymmdd-hhmmss but I can't figure out (translate) the SED regex. I tried sed 's/^File date[^:]\+: \(\d{4}\):\(\d\d\):\(\d\d\) \(\d\d\):\(\d\d\):\(\d\d\)$/\1\2\3-\4\5\6/' but all I get is File date : yyyy:mm:yy hh:mm:ss I would very much like to understand SED and the regex's that make it work, I realise it is quite powerful for stream editing. I particularly do not understand this part [^:] I think that sometimes the caret signifies BOL just as $ is EOL ... But, as I try to post this and I see other SED posts I learn (again?) that "^" is perhaps meaning "not" so [^:] means "match NOT :" .. ? But then just after that IS a : anyway, lost I am. |

log in to a desktop manager using commands typed on a different tty Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:03 AM PDT Say a computer is booted to its desktop manager (SDDM, in this case) and you want to send a command over ssh to make that computer log in as a particular user as if they logged in with the keyboard at the computer. I'm not talking about X forwarding. The computer in question is a Linux desktop that I allow my kids to use for controlled time periods. I have it set up so I can set time limits and lock and unlock sessions (using loginctl) using commands over ssh from my phone. In order for them to use the computer after boot, my wife or I have to first log in locally at the computer. Only then can we control screen lock. I don't know that loginctl can be used to start a user session--just to switch, lock, and terminate them. This problem is the same as asking "what command can I type on tty2 to make SDDM on tty1 log in as a specific user on tty1" (or it would also be acceptable to log-in to KDE on another tty as long as focus changed to that tty automatically.) SSH is actually irrelevant, I guess. SSH is just the implementation of the technique that I need, which could also be done locally. |
Lenovo Y720 Keyboard backlight & Extreme cooling on Arch Linux Posted: 23 Oct 2021 11:03 AM PDT I installed ArchLinux on my Lenovo Legion Y720 laptop and I can't turn on Keyboard lights and Extreme Cooling as I could in Windows 10 using Lenovo NerveSense app. How can I access these on Linux? Is it even possible? I've searched everywhere and I couldn't find anything. Should I try coding a driver? Any literature on that? Thank you! Microphone volume on USB soundcard very low, snd_usb_audio options? Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:02 AM PDT I have a C-Media USB soundcard installed on my Raspberry Pi: Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0d8c:0008 C-Media Electronics, Inc. . It is a USB cable with an XLR end on the other side, to which I have an XLR Microphone (a Sennheiser MD 427 if anyone is interested) connected: Connecting it to my Mac I can turn up the recording volume (it says "settings for selected device" and "input volume" in german) and I get a fairly ok recording from it (it's actually a stereo recording, but this shows the volume level): Now, the same under Linux looks quite differently. The device is recognized ok, snd_usb_audio is loaded and alsamixer shows the new recording device and lets me turn up the "recording volume" all the way: Yet, the volume of what I can record using # AUDIODEV=hw:1 rec tmp.wav is abysmal at best: Now, is there a way to change the kernel module settings so that I can "crank the recording volume up" any more then what I am presented with? Or maybe any other settings I have forgotten about? I can "soft-up" the recording using # AUDIODEV=hw:1 rec tmp.wav gain 20 , but that also increases the noise and it is still below what the Mac records. What exactly is a file offset in lsof output? Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:14 AM PDT I was using lsof to track down deleted files that were still taking up space and I realized that I wasn't quite sure what an offset is with respect to a file. lsof 's man page was less than helpful in this regard and searching around I couldn't get a clear picture of what it is. What is a file offset and why is it useful to have that piece of information? |
How to use ssh over http or https? Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:50 AM PDT I have a linux fedora21 client laptop behind a corporate firewall (which lets through http and https ports but not ssh 22) and I have a linux fedora21 server at home behind my own router. Browsing with https works when I specify my home server's public IP address (because I configured my home router) Is it possible to ssh (remote shell) to my home server over the http/s port? I saw a tool called corkscrew . would that help? opensshd and httpd run on the home server. What else would need configuration? |
Booting without initrd Posted: 23 Oct 2021 11:13 AM PDT Is it possible to boot linux without a initrd.img ? I am planning to add default drivers as a part-of-kernel itself and avoid initrd completely. What are the modules that should be made part-of-the-kernel instead of loadable modules ? |
