audio confort how to regulate avergae sound level (any sources) : automatic sound volume adjustement

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 11:13 AM PDT

how to always have the same average volume of sound whatever the source can be (web/mediaplayers/games/etc...etc...) ?

I tryied to set /etc/pulse/default.pa referening to this troublshooting use-case list

I m runing Debian 12 (sid) currently, but it is just the same.

Doing that I just make a default volume starting level, but it is not what I need.

What I really need is exactly :

  • if sound is to high over an average decibel value, then reduce it.
  • if sound is to low below an average decibel value, then increase it.
  • ignoring the kind of source is (I need that to be system-wide solution, maybe use a script as a daemon ?)

To be honest my first Idea was to do a AGC (automatic gain amplifier) in hardware plugged in the audio output, but on audio-electronic specialized forums they said it will be a little hard to build one efficiently & it might be very expensive too. So I had to think about a software solution first

calling program looks in snap folder

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 11:05 AM PDT

I'm running ubuntu, and have just attempted to install john the ripper:

Nicolay@dom:~/Notes/TA/AppliedInfoSec/PassCracking$ sudo apt-get update Hit:1 http://dk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal InRelease Get:2 http://dk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-updates InRelease [114 kB] Hit:3 http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb stable InRelease Get:4 http://dk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-backports InRelease [101 kB] Ign:5 https://repo.mongodb.org/apt/ubuntu focal/mongodb-org/5.0 InRelease Hit:6 https://repo.mongodb.org/apt/ubuntu focal/mongodb-org/5.0 Release Hit:7 https://packages.microsoft.com/ubuntu/20.04/mssql-server-2019 focal InRelease Get:8 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-security InRelease [114 kB] Hit:9 https://packages.microsoft.com/repos/ms-teams stable InRelease Get:10 http://dk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-updates/main i386 Packages [550 kB] Get:11 http://dk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-updates/main amd64 Packages [1,294 kB] Get:12 http://dk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-updates/main amd64 DEP-11 Metadata [284 kB] Get:13 http://dk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-updates/universe amd64 Packages [866 kB] Get:15 http://dk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-updates/universe i386 Packages [642 kB] Get:16 http://dk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-updates/universe amd64 DEP-11 Metadata [362 kB] Get:17 http://dk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-updates/multiverse amd64 DEP-11 Metadata [940 B] Get:18 http://dk.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-backports/universe amd64 DEP-11 Metadata [10.4 kB] Get:19 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-security/main amd64 DEP-11 Metadata [29.0 kB] Get:20 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-security/universe amd64 DEP-11 Metadata [63.6 kB] Get:21 http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu focal-security/multiverse amd64 DEP-11 Metadata [2,464 B] Fetched 4,433 kB in 1s (3,345 kB/s) Reading package lists... so this looks like it works. But now when I try to invoke the program:

ask@Garsy:~/Notes/TA/AppliedInfoSec/PassCracking$ john bash: /snap/bin/john: No such file or directory

It looks in the /snap folder. Why can this be?

it might be worth noting that I previously had john the ripper isntalled via snap, but uninstalled it

speedtest-cli Error: No such file or directory - /usr/local/var/homebrew/linked/speedtest

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:58 AM PDT

I was using Ookla's speedtest-cli command line app just fine until recently when it started giving me an error: "ImportError: No module named speedtest". After a copious amount of research it led me to upgrade system files by doing a forced MACOS software update. Now the error when running speedtest-cli is Error: No such file or directory - /usr/local/var/homebrew/linked/speedtest

The folder is indeed there. Confirmation:

ls /usr/local/var/homebrew/linked/speedtest /usr/local/var/homebrew/linked/speedtest

Steps to install speedtest-cli were followed to the letter from Ookla's website

Steps to reproduce (with error):

MyMAC:Source_Code me$ brew tap teamookla/speedtest MyMAC:Source_Code me$ brew update Already up-to-date. MyMAC:Source_Code me$ brew install speedtest --force Error: No such file or directory - /usr/local/var/homebrew/linked/speedtest MyMAC:Source_Code me$

I have already tried to remove speedtest (brew uninstall speedtest --force) and re-install but with no success.

Cannot find/detect PS/2 mouse in old Debian. How to enable?

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:30 AM PDT

I'm trying to configure XFree86 3.1.2 on my Debian 1.1 (buzz) distribution, but after configuring XFree86, I receive the error: Fatal server error: Cannot open mouse (No such device) when trying to start the X Server with startx. The problem doesn't seem to be with XFree86, but Debian 1.1 not seeing the PS/2 mouse device. The Debian install manual does not cover mice, and the manpages (man mouse) only pertains to serial mice.

I am using a Microsoft Optical Mouse v1.1 (USB) with the official Microsoft USB -> PS/2 adapter that came with it. This works perfectly well as being recognised as a PS/2 mouse in MS-DOS 6.22 on the same system being used for Debian.

Serial mice are usually located at /dev/mouse but that does not exist (because I don't have a serial mouse). /dev/input/mice also does not exist.

/dev/psmouse exists and is symlinked to /dev/psaux, but when I cat /dev/psmouse I get No such device.

There is no gpm or gpm.conf that exists on this Debian version, and it's not old enough (June 1996) to pre-date PS/2 mice. The Linux kernel is version 2.0.0.

If MS-DOS 6.22 can recognise this USB-PS/2 converted mouse as a PS/2 device, then I'm certain Debian can also.

How do I enable and configure a PS/2 mouse to be recognised in Debian 1.1. (buzz), so that it can be recognised by XFree86?

How to set up an optional DNS service for my home network?

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 11:00 AM PDT

I have a couple of Windows laptops, a Raspberry Pi 4 running Ubuntu, and an x86 box also running Ubuntu. Using DHCP reservation on my WiFi router (Apple Airport) I have given them all static IP addresses. Then on each machine I edited the hosts file and entered the names and IP addresses of all machines.

I would like to improve that last part. I would like to run a DNS service on my Raspberry Pi so that I can avoid manually editing and updating the hosts file on each machine. I want to do it in such a way that if my home DNS service is down I can still access the Internet for web browsing etc. In other words, if my Raspberry Pi goes down it should not take my home internet with it. I also don't want to have to configure each PC to point it to the Raspberry Pi as the DNS service.

So basically I want to run a DNS service on my Raspberry Pi, such that if the Pi is up all Windows PCs and other Ubuntu boxes discover the DNS service and use it for resolving local names, and if the Pi is down, the only thing that won't work is local name resolution.

This seems like a need a lot of people would have, so hopefully someone has invented something to solve this problem.

Program will not uninstall

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:14 AM PDT

I have john the ripper installed on my ubuntu 20.04 machine. Originally, I simply installed it using apt-get.

But now I need to remove it from my machine. Currently when I type john I get this:

ask@Garsy:~/Notes/TA/AppliedInfoSec/PassCracking$ john John the Ripper 1.9.0-jumbo-1 OMP [linux-gnu 64-bit x86_64 AVX2 AC] Copyright (c) 1996-2019 by Solar Designer and others Homepage: http://www.openwall.com/john/

and this is the location:

ask@Garsy:~/Notes/TA/AppliedInfoSec/PassCracking$ whereis john john: /snap/bin/john

First i try:

ask@Garsy:~/Notes/TA/AppliedInfoSec/PassCracking$ sudo apt-get remove john Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done Package 'john' is not installed, so not removed 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 20 not upgraded.

' But this has no effect, john is still on my system. and then ask@Garsy:~/Notes/TA/AppliedInfoSec/PassCracking$ sudo apt-get remove --auto-remove john which has the same effect.

I also try sudo apt-get purge john with no effect.

I don't really know what to do, I can't seem to find any info about uninstalling john other than the stuff i have already tried.

How to change the passphrase in `pass` program without reinitializing a pass store from scratch

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:07 AM PDT

I'm using the pass application which I find really handy. I want to change the passphrase (mother password). I had a look at the man page there but i'm not sure what to do. Do I have to use the init command?. Is it possible to change the passphrase without reinitializing a pass store from scratch? If yes what exact command should be done?

What determines how files are ordered when using ls without sort?

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:43 AM PDT

The order when using ls with -U flag is the same order that I get when using dirent.h library in C and display file names in a loop. When I display d_off member of the dirent struct the numbers appear to be in ascending order.

Is the d_off the reason for the files' order and if so what is it exactly? I saw it being described as file offset but I'm not sure what that means.

Thanks in advance

I can't get "optirun intel-virtual-output" to work in my udev script

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 09:30 AM PDT

I have a thunderbolt 3 dock that I wanted to automate to automatically run a script once it is plugged in and plugged out. I am able to run my "plug out" script perfectly but my "plug-in" script does not work. I have test it manually and everything seems to work fine. But having udev run it doesn't seem to play nicely. I am unable to find any errors thrown by udev. Any helps works.

Tar's -r flag name meaning

Why tar flag used to append file to the archive is named -r?

Other flags' names have some explanations (-x for eXtract, -C for Change current dir to another for output, ..) but I can't get how to explain -r.

How to reset Pipewire settings?

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 09:50 AM PDT

I got a new microphone and was messing with all the audio settings in KDE, but now my old headset mic doesn't work (and my options are really messed up). On Pulse audio you could just delete ~/.config/pulse, but Pipewire's Wiki shows the configs in ~/.config/pipewire, which doesn't exist on my system.

How can I delete/reset Pipewire's config?

Copy directory recursively only if on target the file exists and only if newer than target

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 09:46 AM PDT

How can we copy file and/or directory only if on target the file exists and only if it is newer than on target, and for the directory case it must recursively copy with such capability
as

 $ ls -a ~/.config   gtk-2.0/                gtk-3.0/   SpeedCrunch/     $ ls -a /other/path/home/.config/   gtk-2.0/                gtk-3.0/   SpeedCrunch/      $ rsync -u --existing ~/.config /other/path/home/  skipping directory .

can't work.

I am trying to download fedora into my external ssd through virtual box however it says I do not have free space, but my SSD has 997gb available . It also gives me an option to reclaim free space however it does not let me do it (screenshots are posted). Could someone help me clarify why is this happening?

sed: how to add text to first x occurrences

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 09:22 AM PDT

I am trying to add text to the end of a line the first x times it occurs. I know how to do it globally and for the n occurrence. I can't figure out how to do it for the first nth occurrences. An example would be a text.txt file that contains:

This is a test junk This is a test More junk This is a test This is a test This is a test

And, I want to add a '.' at the end of the first three times that "This is a test" occurs. The output I am trying to get is:

This is a test. junk This is a test. More junk This is a test. This is a test This is a test

SED and REGEX for EXIF renaming

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 11:12 AM PDT

I was unable to comment on this old post,

How can I rename photos, given the EXIF data?

but it had a comment that seemed exactly what I needed so I started a new post, I hope not bad form.

I get what the code does, the piping from jhead through grep and SED...

for i in *.JPG; do j=`jhead "$i" | grep date | sed 's/^File date[^:]\+: \(.\+\)$/\1/'`.jpg echo mv -i "$i" "$j" done

I want a very similar outcome but I'd like to grunge the date a bit, ie. rename/output of: yyyymmdd-hhmmss but I can't figure out (translate) the SED regex. I tried

sed 's/^File date[^:]\+: \(\d{4}\):\(\d\d\):\(\d\d\) \(\d\d\):\(\d\d\):\(\d\d\)$/\1\2\3-\4\5\6/'

but all I get is

File date : yyyy:mm:yy hh:mm:ss

I would very much like to understand SED and the regex's that make it work, I realise it is quite powerful for stream editing. I particularly do not understand this part [^:] I think that sometimes the caret signifies BOL just as $ is EOL ... But, as I try to post this and I see other SED posts I learn (again?) that "^" is perhaps meaning "not" so [^:] means "match NOT :" .. ? But then just after that IS a :

anyway, lost I am.

Debian 11: Libreoffice crashes at once

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 09:21 AM PDT

I have installed Debian 11 from scratch (it is not a Debian 10 upgrade).

When I open Calc and push any one key, Libreoffice crashes and this also happens in safe mode.

I tried to gather some logs, but I am afraid that they do not contain enough information.

Update

This is the result of the command: strace libreoffice 2>&1:

mail: How do I mark an email as unread?

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:00 AM PDT

I am using mail from GNU Mailutils to read the contents of a Maildir. For emails that have already been marked as read, is there a way to mark them as unread in mail?

log in to a desktop manager using commands typed on a different tty

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:03 AM PDT

Say a computer is booted to its desktop manager (SDDM, in this case) and you want to send a command over ssh to make that computer log in as a particular user as if they logged in with the keyboard at the computer. I'm not talking about X forwarding.

The computer in question is a Linux desktop that I allow my kids to use for controlled time periods. I have it set up so I can set time limits and lock and unlock sessions (using loginctl) using commands over ssh from my phone. In order for them to use the computer after boot, my wife or I have to first log in locally at the computer. Only then can we control screen lock. I don't know that loginctl can be used to start a user session--just to switch, lock, and terminate them.

This problem is the same as asking "what command can I type on tty2 to make SDDM on tty1 log in as a specific user on tty1" (or it would also be acceptable to log-in to KDE on another tty as long as focus changed to that tty automatically.) SSH is actually irrelevant, I guess. SSH is just the implementation of the technique that I need, which could also be done locally.

Lenovo Y720 Keyboard backlight & Extreme cooling on Arch Linux

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 11:03 AM PDT

I installed ArchLinux on my Lenovo Legion Y720 laptop and I can't turn on Keyboard lights and Extreme Cooling as I could in Windows 10 using Lenovo NerveSense app. How can I access these on Linux? Is it even possible? I've searched everywhere and I couldn't find anything. Should I try coding a driver? Any literature on that?

Thank you!

How to resolve systemd (code=exited, status=227/NO_NEW_PRIVILEGES)?

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:14 AM PDT

I am trying to install the GitLab community package on a Debian Stretch system, but one of its dependencies, redis-server, fails to install when starting the service using systemd.

Complete log:

$ sudo dpkg --configure redis-server Setting up redis-server (3:3.2.5-4) ... Job for redis-server.service failed because the control process exited with error code. See "systemctl status redis-server.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details. invoke-rc.d: initscript redis-server, action "start" failed. ● redis-server.service - Advanced key-value store Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/redis-server.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled) Active: activating (auto-restart) (Result: exit-code) since Thu 2016-12-15 15:00:17 UTC; 31ms ago Docs: http://redis.io/documentation, man:redis-server(1) Process: 8764 ExecStart=/usr/bin/redis-server /etc/redis/redis.conf (code=exited, status=227/NO_NEW_PRIVILEGES) Process: 8761 ExecStartPre=/bin/run-parts --verbose /etc/redis/redis-server.pre-up.d (code=exited, status=227/NO_NEW_PRIVILEGES) Main PID: 24283 (code=exited, status=227/NO_NEW_PRIVILEGES) Dec 15 15:00:17 Serverdatorn-Debian systemd[1]: redis-server.service: Unit entered failed state. Starting redis-server by running the executable manually works perfectly:

$ sudo /usr/bin/redis-server /etc/redis/redis.conf $ sudo tail /var/log/redis/redis-server.log ... * The server is now ready to accept connections on port 6379

If there is any other information you want me to provide, please tell me.

EDIT:

I tried setting NoNewPrivileges to both yes and no in the redis.service file, reloading and starting it again, but no luck, same error. I did find that running journalctl -xe showed another message that might be helpful:

redis-server.service: Failed at step NO_NEW_PRIVILEGES spawning /usr/bin/redis-server: Invalid argument

Microphone volume on USB soundcard very low, snd_usb_audio options?

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:02 AM PDT

I have a C-Media USB soundcard installed on my Raspberry Pi: Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0d8c:0008 C-Media Electronics, Inc.. It is a USB cable with an XLR end on the other side, to which I have an XLR Microphone (a Sennheiser MD 427 if anyone is interested) connected: this is what it looks like

Connecting it to my Mac I can turn up the recording volume (it says "settings for selected device" and "input volume" in german) mac settings and I get a fairly ok recording from it (it's actually a stereo recording, but this shows the volume level): mac recording

Now, the same under Linux looks quite differently. The device is recognized ok, snd_usb_audio is loaded and alsamixer shows the new recording device and lets me turn up the "recording volume" all the way: alsamixer

Yet, the volume of what I can record using # AUDIODEV=hw:1 rec tmp.wav is abysmal at best: Linux recording

Now, is there a way to change the kernel module settings so that I can "crank the recording volume up" any more then what I am presented with? Or maybe any other settings I have forgotten about?

I can "soft-up" the recording using # AUDIODEV=hw:1 rec tmp.wav gain 20, but that also increases the noise and it is still below what the Mac records.

Apache server at new AWS EC2 instance is not reachable

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:06 AM PDT

I am not able to access my web server I recently set up on Ubuntu AWS EC2 instance:

client:~ user$ curl yyy.yyy.yyy.yyyy curl: (7) Failed to connect to yyy.yyy.yyy.yyyy port 80: Operation timed out

Apache is up and running at the AWS instance:

ubuntu@server:~$ sudo service apache2 status * apache2 is running

and the port 80 is opened

ubuntu@server:~$ sudo netstat -plunt | grep apache2  tcp6     0    0 :::80                 :::*                  LISTEN    2968/apache2

I am not that experienced in setting up web servers so far, but as I know Apache should be accessible right after it was installed. What might be wrong in my case?

proxy timeout, error

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 09:32 AM PDT

I am trying to set up a proxy and every time I try to use it it denies me or times out. I tried every thing. Tor is up and running properly. My system is fully updated and I'm on Kali Linux. Sometimes it won't even go through.

What exactly is a file offset in lsof output?

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:14 AM PDT

I was using lsof to track down deleted files that were still taking up space and I realized that I wasn't quite sure what an offset is with respect to a file. lsof's man page was less than helpful in this regard and searching around I couldn't get a clear picture of what it is.

What is a file offset and why is it useful to have that piece of information?

How to use ssh over http or https?

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 10:50 AM PDT

I have a linux fedora21 client laptop behind a corporate firewall (which lets through http and https ports but not ssh 22) and I have a linux fedora21 server at home behind my own router. Browsing with https works when I specify my home server's public IP address (because I configured my home router)

Is it possible to ssh (remote shell) to my home server over the http/s port?

I saw a tool called corkscrew. would that help?

opensshd and httpd run on the home server. What else would need configuration?

Booting without initrd

Posted: 23 Oct 2021 11:13 AM PDT

Is it possible to boot linux without a initrd.img ? I am planning to add default drivers as a part-of-kernel itself and avoid initrd completely.

What are the modules that should be made part-of-the-kernel instead of loadable modules ?
