Does the M1 pro chip good enough to run VM (Kali, Win10) comfortably to develop or PenTesting? [closed]

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 10:59 PM PDT

Deciding to go for the first time with MacOS with Macbook 14 M1 pro (80core CPU ver.) just discovered that the M1, in general, doesn't have SMT/Hyper-Threading so I was wondering if running a VM and doing any work back and forth between the macOS and the VM is possible with such a low number of cores.

Is it safe to delete other language lproj from apps?

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 08:46 PM PDT

I cannot speak any language besides English, so all the other built in languages in many apps (including built in apps) serve no purpose on my disk. Is it safe to delete them, or will the app try to find them for whatever reason and panic and break if they are not found?

Would it be safe to delete the selected files in Safari.app/Contents/Resources?enter image description here

Closed laptop mid-Monterrey update. Now I can’t install it or revert. Any way to save data?

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 08:44 PM PDT

I have a late 2019 16" MBP. Was on Catalina. Downloaded Monterrey. Had to check out of a hotel room to move to another room while it was installing so I closed my laptop for a few mins while moving rooms. When I reopened it seemed to continue. However it hung at the last part (black screen, apple logo, basic progress bar at ~90%). After waiting a couple hours I tried restarting f and signing in multiple times, same issue.

Tried safe mode, but it takes me to a flow that like when you setup your laptop the first time.

Then I called Apple Support who talked me through:

Cmd+R recovery, reinstall Monterrey. 4 hours later, same thing.

Then Cmd+Option+R internet recovery. Did first aid on all disks. When trying to reinstall Catalina, the disk selection is empty.

Any way to get this working, with any OS, and keep my data? I didn't back anything up.

Not able to use VPN since upgrading to macOS Monterey

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 08:29 PM PDT

As the title suggests, I upgraded my mac to Monterey today, and since then I am not able to use any VPN on it.

No idea why that's the case, I tried HMA (Hide My Ass) and Nord. In my networks, it says that VPN is connected, but the internet doesn't work.

I am using a 13" MacBook Pro 2018 if that helps

What is this bluetooth keyboard and how can I make its Escape and F-keys work?

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 10:29 PM PDT

I recently found this keyboard in hard rubbish. I really like the feel! I've had a lot of trouble finding a bluetooth keyboard that I like, so I'm motivated to try to make this one work.

enter image description here

enter image description here

There are absolutely no hints who the manufacturer is, what model it is, etc. It comes up in the Bluetooth settings as just "Bluetooth keyboard". It is powered by two AAA batteries. There is a battery/bluetooth indicator above the F11 key that goes green when turned on, and flashes green when pairing.

Underneath there is an on-off switch and a "connect" button. There is a very generic FCC compliance notice, and space for a serial number, but no serial number.

There are two major problems:

  • the escape key (marked as a rounded rectangle symbol) does nothing unless the Fn key is held down
  • the F keys all perform their second function (volume up/down etc), even when the Fn key is down.

And some real quirks with the F keys:

Key Without Fn With Fn
F1-F2 Screen brightness up/down Same
F3 (magnifying glass) Nothing Mission Control
F4 (flower in a box) Short press: nothing. Medium press: screen goes blank. Long press: prompt to shut down computer (!) Nothing
F5 "keyboard symbol". Nothing. F5
F6 (no symbol) F6 F6
F7-F12. Music controls, volume controls, etc. Same.
Lock key Lock Del.

So:

  • what keyboard is this? (EDIT Looks very similar to this )
  • how can I make the Escape key work even without Fn? (Showstopper...)
  • is there a way to fix the issue with the Fn key not providing access to the F keys?

Worst comes to worst, I'd probably be happy to buy a very similar keyboard to this one if it had the same feel but without the quirks. It feels like maybe this is a knock-off of some well-known brand, but it's actually pretty good (quirks aside).

Mojave vs Catalina on Mid-2012 Macbook Pro w/ upgrades [closed]

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 10:53 PM PDT

Not sure whether or not to upgrade for security reasons on my tricked-out behemoth I've got a 240gb SSD on it now as the main disk and 16gb of ram, it's more than enough My biggest concerns surround battery life so I'm not sure if a newer version would help with that

macOS - Need an app that will record all activity of every app on my Mac*

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 05:39 PM PDT

The reasons is when I wake up and find something fishy was going on while I was asleep I want to be able to look and see when an app was opened and all the times not just last time, what it was doing behind the scenes, how long it was doing it.

I have tried looking at apps like "timing", "usage", ect but they only track duration and that is about it.

Iterm2 dropdown terminal switches workspace to main when opened via hotkey

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 04:32 PM PDT

I'm struggling with making iterm2 to show it's dropdown terminal on the workspace I am currently working. It always switches to the main (the one which contains non-full-screen windows). It used to be working, and that behaviour appeared after not using it for a while so I cannot tell what has changed.

What I tried so far.

  1. Playing with Window->Space settings in my profile. Neither Current nor All gives changes the behaviour.
  2. brew uninstall iterm2; brew install iterm2.
  3. defaults delete com.googlecode.iterm2 followed by set up

Currently I'm on Monterey, my config dump:

Fully lost all documents after clearing trash

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 07:59 PM PDT

My friend lost all her documents, downloads, and desktop files. The thing is that she lost the entire folders. When I go into her users there are shortcuts to the desktop, download and documents folders, but they do not go anywhere. She emptied her trash bin and she thought it was 3 files in it, but she saw 1500 files being deleted. I think she accidently moved her 3 folders into the trash, and was just using the shortcut in the users to access them.

I tried using a disk recovery software but no files could be found. I think the index of documents has been deleted, but the files are still there. Time machine was not enabled, and icloud was not either.

I'm kind of hoping for a special case where you can recover permanently deleted folders if their documents or desktop

How can I obtain the backslash with a US keyboard configured with a Spanish (ES-ISO) keyboard layout?

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 09:03 PM PDT

I have a Macbook Air with the typical US keyboard layout printed in the keys, but I want to use the keyboard as if it were a Spanish keyboard because I'm accustomed to that layout and since I don't look at the keys while typing I don't mind the layout not matching the characters actually printed in the keys.

The layout of my keyboard looks exactly like this:

Macbook Air with US keyboard layout

I have configured the keyboard to behave as if it were an Spanish one, by going to Preferences > Keyboard > Input Sources and adding the "Español - ISO" layout.

That works fine, mostly, with one exception: The key at the left of the top "1" key (with the printed characters "`~") doesn't behave the same as the key in the same position in a Spanish keyboard, even after configuring the "Español - ISO" layout.

Instead of the key being "ºª\", which is the key at the left of "1" in the Spanish keyboard, it behaves as a "<>≤" key. Why is that?

So, since this is happening, I can't use those symbols ("ºª\"), of which I miss the backslash the most. How can I get the backslash with this layout without having to switch to US keyboard just to get the backslash character (below the "delete" key), and then switching back to Spanish layout? (which is a cumbersome process just to get a single character each time).

Edit: I think the problem is that the Spanish keyboard actually has an extra key that the US keyboard lacks (please note that the Shift key is shorter in the Spanish keyboard to accomodate the extra "<>≤" key). Spanish Macbook keyboard layout It seems that, for some reason, the key at the left of the "1" key is actually moved (including its keycode) down to the right of the Left Shift key in European keyboards, and a completely new key with a new key code replaces the key at the left of the "1" (in the Spanish keyboard it is "ºª\", while in other European languages it's a different set of symbols but the key code remains the same), so with a US keyboard I can't really have the full Spanish layout because of the missing key.

How to make the dialogue in the popup box on spelling errors in Microsoft Word appear again?

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 10:51 PM PDT

The popup box for spelling and punctuation errors on Word no longer shows the correction options for these errors. I found this feature very useful and quick for my academic writing compared to right-clicking or using two-fingers to check errors and would really like it back!

Does anyone know how I can fix this issue, please?

Connecting old & new MacBook Pros with USB

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 12:14 AM PDT

This might be a dumb question!

I'm waiting for my 14" MBP and I'm preparing to transfer many files from my old mid-2014 Retina MBP. I'm planning to use target disk mode on my old computer and transfer manually.

Can I use a regular old USB to USB-C cable (such as this: https://amzn.to/3mv4Arw) or would I need a different cable/adapter to connect the two computers using target disk mode?

Creating conditional script for softwareupdate command

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 01:35 PM PDT

Looking to create a script that runs a function if there are software updates available. Currently I am just using this:

softwareupdate -ia && myFunction

This creates my desired effect, but if there are no software updates available, myFunction should not activate.

Time Machine device with hostname changed: how to fix it?

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 01:57 PM PDT

I have setup a Raspberry Pi to be my Time Machine remote device. It seems to work properly since I have been able to do some backups.

In the meantime I have changed the Raspberry Pi hostname and so Time Machine is not able to find anymore the device in the network (since it is still looking for the old hostname).

In order to fix this issue I have tried to change the Time Machine setting file (/Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist), by replacing the old hostname with the new one in its raw content. However, after a reboot, the file in question is replaced with a new blank file and Time Machine results to be not configured.

Is it possible to tell Time Machine to find for another device in local network? If yes, how?

Windows Reopening When Mac is Rebooted

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 08:10 PM PDT

Having an issue every time I reboot my Mac.

Even though the "Reopen windows when logging back in" box is unticked and I've removed everything from ~/Library/Saved Application State and locked the folder, I end up with Spotify, Mail, Finder, System Preferences and Safari open in the foreground. I also have nothing in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items. I'm thinking of doing a clean install as it is very frustrating.

This is the thread I'm coming from: Disable OS X feature to reopen windows at login time

I've already tried everything mentioned there.

Any help is appreciated. 😊

App Store Sign-in Problem

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 08:35 PM PDT

I just got a MacBook Air, and because it's my first Mac, I set up an Apple ID and account while setting up my MacBook. However, I can't sign-in to the App Store. Here's what happens:

  1. Box that says "Sign in to download from the App Store." And I sign-in.

  2. Another box says "This Apple ID has not yet been used with the App Store. Please review your account information."

  3. I click on "review", a new box says "Sign in required for account creation."

  4. So, I enter my password, and the box that says "This Apple ID has not yet been used with the App Store. Please review your account information" comes up again.

  5. From here I encounter an endless loop.

From what I found online, setting up payment information should fix this situation, but I have entered payment information and this problem still persists.

Where does iCloud saves backups and documents? I can't find them

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 02:05 PM PDT

Please see the image below. I am using 5GB of iCloud space, it shows 966GB of backup of my old iphone in iCloud. The storage is the same the yellow in the horizontal bar. The problem is I cannot locate this on iCloud. I logged into icloud.com but it is not there. The same is the story for documents which is taking about 900MB space on iCloud but I cannot find it. The question how can I download them, where can I find them. I can delete it but I do not want to delete without backing it up first.

enter image description here

Adding a second screenshot, if I delete the whatsapp data, it gives me a message that it will be deleted from iDrive but the problem is I can't find it there hence can't back it up. enter image description here

Non-sudo alternatives to get the current time zone?

Posted: 31 Oct 2021 12:07 AM PDT

sudo systemsetup -gettimezone will return the current system set time zone to the command line but it requires sudo.

date "+%z" will return the offset (e.g. +0900) and date "+%Z" will return the time zone short code (e.g. JST).

Is there another way, either command, executable or API? My searches have turned up nothing. I'm writing a CLI terminal program (not Objective-C/Swift) within which it would be helpful to have access to whatever the system currently is set to.

Any help or insight will be much appreciated.

sshfs under autofs from Debian 10.9 to macOS 11.0 fails, but sshfs without autofs from and to same works fine

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 09:07 PM PDT

I am attempting to set up autofs to spawn an sshfs.

The autofs is on a Debian 10.9 system.

The remote sshd I want it to connect to is on a mac running Big Sur.

When I try to ls the intended (auto)mountpoint, I just get: No such file or directory

I can ssh in fine, without a password, both as myself and as root. I want the sshfs to use root.

I changed /etc/ssh/sshd_config to allow root login with a password. Other than that, the mac's sshd is untweaked.

Also, this works fine on the Debian system:

$ sshfs root@daniels-mac-mini:/System/Volumes/Data /mnt  $ ls /mnt  <files>

...making it even more weird that sshfs isn't working but only when attempted under autofs.

If I look in the mac's logs, I see a lot of:

comp.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (com.openssh.sshd...): Service exited with abnormal code: 255

And if I use launchctl to shut down the sshd on the mac, and then run:

/usr/sbin/sshd -d

...in a terminal, I get a lot of output, including (retyped, I don't have cut and paste happy yet) :

attempt 6 failures 5 [preauth] Failed password for root from 192.168.1.96 port 33336 ssh2 maximum authentication attempts exceeded for root form 192.168.1.96 port 33336 ssh2 [preauth] Disconnecting authenticating user root 192.168.1.96 port 33336: Too many authentication failures [preauth]

...which is strange, because it should be using public key authentication, not a password. I know passwordless is working fine in other circumstances between these two hosts.

I've tried a number of things in /etc/auto.mymount on the Debian system, from complex but well-explored-in-Linux-land to as simple as:

daniels-mac-mini -fstype=fuse,allow_other :sshfs\#root@daniels-mac-mini\:/System/Volumes/Data

Any suggestions folks? I'm about out of ideas.

Thanks!

iTunes restore error 4014

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 10:11 PM PDT

My iPad PRO (model with home button) has the black screen of death, holding down power+home buttons does not force a reboot, not does holding volume buttons and power button.

When plugged into latest iTunes, iTunes reports that the iPad needs to be restored. The iPad is detected with Serial Number as n/a.

enter image description here

When I proceed to restore the iPad, iTunes prepares the files, and tries to restore the device.

But then I get Error 4014.

What is this qemu-system-aarch64 process and why is it using almost 3 GB of RAM on my M1 Mac

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 02:07 PM PDT

I am on my M1 Mac mini(Big Sur 11.3.1) and got a message that I am running out of RAM and should close some apps. I saw this process called qemu-system-aarch64 that takes up to 3GB of RAM. I don't know what it does and cannot stop it either. What is it and why does it eat up so much RAM?

How can I make the draggable titlebar file icon always appear at the top of files in Big Sur?

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 02:12 PM PDT

I don't know the nomenclature for this, but there used to be always a little file icon at the top of say, a pdf or jpeg which could be dragged to put the file somewhere else (eg paste it into an email). It looked like this (I'm talking about the little icon to the left of the word 'gray's' in this screenshot):

little file icon

However, on Big Sur, the default behaviour for this little icon is hidden until I hover my mouse. So, by default, I see this (sans icon):

a picture without icon

I would like this little icon to always be present at the top of all files, like it used to be. Is there a way to do this?

(My apologies for not knowing the name for this little icon!)

Can I back up one external hard drive to a smaller external hard drive via Time Machine?

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 06:00 PM PDT

So I've just had an external hard drive (5TB Seagate Backup Plus Portable) fail on me, the 3rd such time in 5 years. This is not unexpected behaviour in my experience: each of these hard drives has been read & written from basically 24/7, has failed at a point with less than 10% free space available, and I am always adding more data to them.

I back up all of my data via Time Machine to a second external hard drive (8TB Seagate Backup Plus Desktop), which I've had for about 5 years now; it is still working, despite having run out of storage space on two prior occasions, necessitating some cleaning up of old backups. A checkup with Disk Utility reveals no problems.

I am looking at replacing the failed hard drive with a larger one, which will necessitate buying a desktop drive, since no manufacturer currently makes a 6TB+ USB powered hard drive (except LaCie, but that drive is USB-C powered, and I only have regular USB 3.0 ports). My plan is to purchase a 10TB desktop drive, as 8TB desktop drives are not available in stores where I live at the moment.

The question is:

  1. Can a 10TB drive be backed up via Time Machine to an 8TB drive if it is only partially full (in this case, roughly 4.5TB of data)?
  2. If so, how long can I expect the 8TB drive to last if it continues to be used almost entirely for backups? (In the best case scenario, I would need to be able to continue using it for 2 to 3 years until data needs force me to get a larger one.)

Does QuickTime automatically record stereo audio into mono?

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 08:01 PM PDT

I connect Zoom h4n Pro to my Mac via USB as audio interface. I then record audios with QuickTime.

The input of h4n is stereo; the right & left inputs are not exactly the same. But it seems that QuickTime automatically mixes the left & right channels; as a result, the generated audio file has same volumes from left and right.

Could anyone confirm me that it is true?

Reformatted Windows HDD shows up twice in Disk Utility

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 07:07 PM PDT

Had a 1TB hard drive in a Windows laptop that I replaced with an SSD. I've put the old hard drive in a USB enclosure so I can use it as an external drive.

I plugged it into my Mac and opened disk utility where I saw two new mounted drives:

WINDOWS RECOVERY

I clicked on the WINDOWS drive (981.9GB) and erased it to the ExFat format. However, the RECOVERY drive is still there (16.85GB).

I've tried unplugging it, using the MacOS format, etc. but they still show up as separate drives.

How can I merge these into one external hard drive?

How can I change the default programs that open Outlook email attachments?

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 03:01 PM PDT

On my MacOS Catalina I chose already to always open JSON files with VSCode. This works from Finder.

But from Outlook (for Mac v16.35), when I get receive an email with a JSON attachment, the file icon shows the Xcode icon and the Open context menu or the double click on the attachment open Xcode.

How can I change the default programs such that even Outlook opens it using my system default application for that file.

I tried and did not work:

  • restarting Outlook after making VScode the default application for JSON files

Can MacBooks run without a battery?

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 06:14 PM PDT

I have a MacBook Pro (2008). It is a secondary computer I rarely use, so it was easy to last that long with it.

Such a long lasting service turned me into an adept of Apple quality. I am looking forward to buy a new one except... nowadays the battery is harder to remove.

My concern is not "a replaceable battery", it is more of "a removable battery". As soon as the battery dies, I would like to keep using the laptop with a power cord. However I've seen all my batteries swelling and/or getting extremely hot. I might be paranoid, but in those cases I just wanted to remove the battery and keep using a good enough laptop.

Is this possible with new MacBooks? Can they work without a battery attached? Or can their batteries be ignored once they expire?

Not able to access localhost via local IP

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 11:01 PM PDT

I want to connect to my local Web Server (NodeJS server) which runs on my MacBook with my iPhone.

On my Mac I can access the server via http://localhost:3000/. Now all it should take is to replace localhost with my Mac's local IP address like this http://192.168.0.13:3000/. However, on my iPhone I cannot access the server this way and even when I try to open http://192.168.0.13:3000/ on my Mac there is no connection being established.

This is definitely a problem with my Mac and not with my program because when I run the server on Windows and try to connect to it with the local IP address it works just fine.

Also trying this in another Wi-Fi Network does not help or changing the port does not change anything either.

I am using Mac OSX 10.11.5 and my firewall is turned off.

How can I solve this problem?

Why can't Time Machine see shared drive?

Posted: 30 Oct 2021 10:36 PM PDT

I am having trouble setting up a Time Machine backup to a shared network drive. I have an external drive plugged into a MacBook Pro (MBP), and I want to use Time Machine to remotely back up a MacBook Air (MBA) to it. I followed the instructions in "Can Time Machine back up to an external HD connected to another Mac?" but Time Machine will not present the remote drive as an option.

  • The drive is formatted properly. I have an identical partition to which the MBP does a local Time Machine backup.
  • The drive is shared properly. In fact, the MBA can see and mount the remote drive. MBA mounting shared partition
  • However, the partition is not shown as a potential Time Machine drive. No TM disks available

Finder can see and access the drive, so why can't Time Machine? Is there a bit somewhere I can flip to tell Time Machine to see it?
