MacBook 2012 13" non touch bar not turning on after trying to replace SSD Posted: 19 Sep 2021 09:33 PM PDT I bough a new SSD (2242 type) along with an adapter to replace my existing Apple SSD 128GB. I removed the back cover, disconnected the battery connector. inserted new SSD. But Mac did not recognized the new SSD. Therefore, I decided to re-insert the old SSD. This time, when swap SSDs, I didn't disconnected the battery connector. But MAC was in shut down and swap was done quickly without any issue. After that, when I'm trying to turn on the mac with old SSD in it, It doesn't turning on. Can someone tell me what could be the issue? |
How to save more Time Machine local snapshots Posted: 19 Sep 2021 09:12 PM PDT According to Apple Support, there is no local snapshot saved beyond 24 hours:

How to update iPhone without wifi? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 05:31 PM PDT I need to update iPhone to get important security updates. I do not have access to a wifi connection, and even when I do, cellular is much more performant: in Australia, about 20 times better download on 5G than on broadband (250 Mbps vs ~25 Mbps). How an I work around Apple's archaic restriction that makes updating an iPhone impossible without wifi? |
My Mac can't recognise USB Volume as Start-volume Posted: 19 Sep 2021 04:05 PM PDT I would like to reset Catalina. The volume with the operating system has been deleted. However, it does not recognise the external USB volume where the latest Catalina version is loaded as a start-up volume. I have now tried to restore the system with a backup from TimeMachine from an external hard drive. Unfortunately, it does not react to this either. Can anyone help me? |
Dictionary.app forgetting custom labels Posted: 19 Sep 2021 03:00 PM PDT Long story short when Apple moved from Leopard to Snow Leopard they changed their Japanese dictionary provider and along the way lost access to some very useful tools (e.g. a Japanese thesaurus), so I've been importing them into every new installation of OS X ever since. For a few versions it had no problem letting me re-label the dictionaries (right click, "Edit Label") so I could tell which was which, but for a while now it's been forgetting the labels when the app gets closed (resulting in my dictionary bar looking something like: Japanese, Japanese, Japanese-English, Japanese-English, Japanese Synonyms). I decided to try editing labels again and seeing if Big Sur solved any of this. The current dictionaries remember their names, but the imported ones revert their labels as soon as the app is closed. I've tried updating the info.plist file inside each dictionary's file to change references that look like the default label to what I want it to be, but it hasn't changed the behavior inside the app. Is there anything I can check on that would fix this behavior? |
How to launch two terminal commands with delay thru applescript or automator? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 03:59 PM PDT I need to launch two terminal commands thru applescript/automator with delay between them. Absolutely don't know how to do it thru applescript, so I tried to do it thru automator and here what it says when i try to launch PRLCTL command: ***'sh: prlctl: command not found'. Commands: Launching them directly thru terminal is working. Can somebody help me with figuring out how can I save it in one file and launch these two comand with it. |
Can I boot an old El Capitan harddrive on my M1 Posted: 19 Sep 2021 06:42 PM PDT So, I have found some data on this question already but haven't been able to find a solution. I had a 2009 MacBook Pro running El Capitan. Something is wrong with the motherboard and it won't boot. It has software on it that won't run on a newer OS than Maverick (such as Photoshop CS6). Therefore, I still want to use the drive if possible. Minimum, I need to get a lot of data, photos, etc off that drive. I have a new MacBook Air with the M1 chip. I am able to mount the drive and look around and even run some applications but obviously not Photoshop. When loading the boot options at startup, the drive does not appear as a bootable option but can be seen when opening disk utility. Questions:

Nikon Tethered to iPad, iPhone on import, duplicate images appear Posted: 19 Sep 2021 04:57 PM PDT I am using a Nikon Z7 and Z7II. Connected via the Apple camera connection kit to an iPad Mini 5 (14.7.1) and an iPhone 6s Plus (14.7.1). As I shoot, the images will appear in the "import" screen of the Photos app. However, they show up duplicated. They are not duplicated on the camera. If I disconnect the camera and reconnect, they are no longer duplicated. Only new pictures taken while the camera is connected appear duplicated. This happens in multiple apps that import images directly from a camera. This makes it difficult to work on a shoot as the screen becomes cluttered by dozens of duplicated images. Connecting and reconnecting to clear the screen is not an option during a shoot. UPDATE: -This happens with both JPEG and RAW. -When I test on my Mac Mini, it works properly and only shows the single image in Image Capture. As it should. Any ideas? Thank you |
Posted: 19 Sep 2021 11:17 AM PDT I was looking through purchases members of my family made through Apple's Family Sharing feature, when I stumbled across a suspicious-looking app, "OneClick Cleaner Pro" (image below). This app's page has a lowercase "update" button, which is suspicious for 2 reasons: 1) normally the update button is uppercase and 2) as far as I can tell, this app is not installed on my phone (searching for it in the app library yields no results). This app does not show up in an app store search but "One Click Cleaner Pro" (with a space between "one" and "click") does. I believe that neither my own device nor my family member's device has been deliberately jailbroken. Any ideas what's going on? |
How to exclude the numbers written in two cells in Apple's Numbers app? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 10:50 AM PDT Hopefully someone can help me as this has me stumped all afternoon! I have a spreadsheet and I have two columns that are added up to get the average. The formula i'm using is this:
I want to add columns B, C, D, E, F, G & J together - skipping columns H and I (titled OR and RP). How can I do this? I keep getting a syntax error in column K, which is supposed to be the total of B, C, D, E, F, G & J. I have added a picture, so hopefully it will make more sense. |
iCloud Drive Preview folder shows persistent iCloud icon Posted: 19 Sep 2021 09:49 AM PDT The Preview folder in iCloud Drive shows a persistent dashed-line iCloud icon. It has been showing the icon for hours even though all the files have most definitely been downloaded. The folder isn't particularly big either: only 40MB. A reboot doesn't solve it. Any ideas on how to make it go away? |
Weird keyboard behavior re: holding keys down [duplicate] Posted: 19 Sep 2021 09:05 AM PDT On Big Sur 11.4. My keyboard has started behaving very strangely, and I'm not sure how to fix it. I have looked through other topics about how to toggle accented characters on/off and those suggestions haven't worked. This seems to have happened out of the blue -- not with any update or new software installation or restart.
I just want to go back to my original keyboard functionality as described in 1) above.. how do I do it?? |
ZSH conflict with Python setuptools extras and pip? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 08:46 AM PDT I have installed python 3.9.7 using pyenv. I am wondering what the message "no matches found" might indicate in relation to zsh? Is there a environmental setting that would confuse here is the full command history: |
How to list in Terminal only files visible in Finder? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 10:26 AM PDT I know how to view hidden files in the Finder. Instead, what I'd like to do is list files in the shell/Terminal by the same criteria that the Finder uses for files that are hidden. (My objective is to collect metrics using a cronjob/launchd script that are consistent with what appears in the UI.) This is proving to be more difficult than it sounds. Here is an example case of the ways I am aware of to hide a file from the Finder (Big Sur 11.6, Apple Silicon, APFS): This requres that The expected outcome of the command or script is one file, So far, my approach would be to loop through all files output by I suspect that the other options would be to manually parse the output of Edit: Since apparently some users' |

MacBook Air Battery capacity down to 93%! Should I worry? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 09:24 PM PDT I have MacBook Air 2017 (8/128). I've been using it since 2019 on an occasional basis, not as a regular machine. The battery backup is pretty good. But recently I noticed from coconutBattery app that the battery capacity has downgraded to 93%. Cycle count of battery is just 33 though. Should I be concerned about it? |
(iWork) Numbers: Cut and Paste, macros Posted: 19 Sep 2021 08:14 AM PDT Is there a way to "cut" certain cells and paste them to another cells or sheet without losing formulas with references to other cells (such as MS Excel does with command+X). Numbers does not support Excel macros at all? |
Posted: 19 Sep 2021 10:07 PM PDT So I have a friend, who has an iMac Pro with high specs at his home and I thought about accessing his iMac Pro from my Macbook Pro via some kind of remote desktop service. I would do some rather extensive video editing on that iMac Pro, for which my Macbook Pro is just too slow currently as its a rather old one from 2016. My question now is how i would be able to access that iMac Pro from my Macbook Pro, so I can basically do some kind of screen sharing and use Final Cut Pro installed on that iMac Pro. I tried downloading Remote Desktop from the store, but I can only make it work, when both of our devices are in the same network (we tried it on wifi), but I just wasnt able to make it work when we are not both in the same network, which would be the actual case at hand, because I would need to access his iMac Pro from anywhere. I have seen something with SSH, but isnt that only for servers and such? Either way I just wanted to ask, if someone knows how to best get this setup working. |
Connecting two MacBooks over USB-C for transferring video signal from one to the other Posted: 19 Sep 2021 09:08 AM PDT I have two MacBooks (a Pro and an Air). Both are modern and have USB-C. Is this possible without putting some converter in the middle? It feels like it should be... |
Apple iPad USB stick showing "External: open dir error, path = / " Posted: 19 Sep 2021 09:06 PM PDT Greetings dear community. I bought a 128 USB stick for my Gilrfriend's Mac which works solely with an app called LUV-Share. The USB was brand new and was supposed to store HD movies, which are above 4GB. This wasn't possible because the format of the stick was FAT32 so we formatted the stick to Mac OS Extended (Groß/Kleinschreibung/journaled), in order to be able to store bigger files. Now we have the movies in the stick but when opening the app and clicking the icon "External Storage" we get the following error: "External: open dir error. path = /" And this is where I find myself lost. Perhaps you could guide me to a solution for this matter. Thank you in advance for your help and have a good day. Sincerely, Irendur |
MacBook doesn't remember Screen Orientation Posted: 19 Sep 2021 08:26 PM PDT I've got at work two external displays + a MBP 13" 2017. (OS: Mojave 10.14.1 Beta) The monitors are both BenQ (GL2450), connected via HDMI to a Thunderbolt 3 port. (one through hub, one through plain adapter) Now I have rotated the left screen by 90 degrees and set up the Internal Display on the right, it all works fine. Until I come back to work after disconnecting everything for > 1h. Then all my screens rotation are messed up, the normally pivoted display is back to default, and the default display is now rotated by 90 degrees, though I did NOT switch Ports on the MBP or Adapters. Only way to fix this is to manoeuvre the mouse through messed up displays and go to the system settings and change everything back to normal. Problem there is, if I rotate the most left monitor (default -> 90), it asks for confirmation, and most of the times I can't reach it fast enough through the messed up displays. Interestingly enough, if I rotate the middle monitor first (90 -> default), it doesn't ask for permission. It's annoying to do this every morning I arrive to work, though I started to see it as kind of a challenge. No the OS is not the problem ... I'm in this situation way longer than Mojave was announced. EDIT: tried to narrow down the problem by plugging in cables at different times, rebooting, other monitors etc. nothing of that worked. I'm out of ideas. |
How to change FAT32 file attributes under OS X? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 11:14 PM PDT FAT and FAT32 file systems support file attributes like "read only". How can I change those under OS X? The standard chmod command does not seem to do the trick. How else can I do this? |
Prevent auto-pairing for certain devices (Bluetooth) Posted: 19 Sep 2021 10:16 PM PDT I have a Early 2011 Macbook Pro 13" running OS X 10.10.1 (Yosemite). At work, I have a Apple Magic Trackpad and an Apple Wireless Keyboard, both which use Bluetooth. When I get to work, my Mac automatically connects to both of them (if Bluetooth is on). At home, I have a Belkin F8Z492-P Bluetooth Audio Adapter hooked up to my stereo (sorry, no product page available). If Bluetooth is on, my audio will automatically be routed to the Bluetooth adapter (which is something I rarely want). How can I make OS X automatically connect to my trackpad and keyboard at work but not automatically connect to the bluetooth audio adapter at home? Currently, I shut Bluetooth off when I get home, but I'd like to avoid toggling Bluetooth when I get home/when I get to work, since it is quite annoying to start typing on the wireless keyboard and have nothing happen, or not have audio when I get home. If this is not possible, can I prevent OS X from switching my audio automatically when connecting to the Bluetooth audio adapter? |
Exclude sub-folders from Finder search Posted: 19 Sep 2021 09:32 AM PDT How can I force Finder to only search the current folder, ignoring the contents of all the sub-folders? How to know if Mac OS X machine is being remotely viewed? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 06:50 PM PDT Currently I have no way to know if my machine is being remotely viewed by our tech support, and would prefer to know, given the massive privacy breach that would entail should this be happening. I am running Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Running I know this service is running: My knowledge of administration of Macs on a network is limited, so I don't know what tools allow this. |
How to stop OS X from writing Spotlight and Trash files to memory cards and USB sticks? Posted: 19 Sep 2021 01:38 PM PDT When plugging a USB stick into a Mac, OS X creates a number of hidden files on the stick, including a Spotlight index and Trash folder. Example from the terminal for a USB stick "Untitled": It even does this on the xD memory card for my camera, so after having copied my pictures and deleted them from the card, the card is still full. Is it possible to turn this off for USB and memory cards, so OS X either writes these files to the primary disk or doesn't write them at all? |
