How to mount internal disk that is not visible in terminal Posted: 27 Sep 2021 12:04 AM PDT I have somehow deleted/unmounted an internal disk drive from my macbook while wanted to freshly install macOS. I had bootcamp with windows before and then I deleted that partition. I boot from USB key with macOS install file to get to terminal. When I list the drives I get following (the same happened when I tried with internet recovery): The internal drive is missing. Also in disk utility there is no internal storage disk. This disk should have size of 1TB. If I do not use USB key with macOS install file or internet recovery there is just black screen. Is there something that I could do to mount the disk drive? |
How can I stop DropBox from being automatically added to the top of the sidebar in Finder? Posted: 26 Sep 2021 11:59 PM PDT What it says on the tin. No matter whether I reorder my sidebar items or remove DropBox from my sidebar outright, it always reappears at the top of the sidebar upon login. I haven't found anything in the DropBox settings related to this, and neither have I found anything on Google. How can I stop this unwanted and intrusive behaviour without uninstalling DropBox, which I use for work? Running macOS 10.15.7, if that matters. |
How to tell if M1 Mac has Rosetta installed? Posted: 26 Sep 2021 11:55 PM PDT ➥ On an Apple Silicon based Mac, how does one tell if Rosetta 2 has been installed/activated? I am trying to run only native software. So I would like to be able to monitor whether Rosetta is in use or not. I know I can sort on the Kind column of the process list seen in the Activity Monitor app to find a process currently running through Rosetta 2 or running natively ("Apple"). But I want to know if the Rosetta capability in general has been installed/activated in general on my Mac, even if no app is currently running that way. |

Mutliple spaces/desktops: Disable switching to other spaces when opening an app? Posted: 27 Sep 2021 12:35 AM PDT Not sure if I explained it well but you know when you have multiple spaces, you will still see the opened app on that other space on the app drawer on the bottom. I hate how it makes my desktop cluttered. There's a reason why I separated that space. I work multiple jobs so I assign different spaces for it. I want that space to act as its own desktop. Like if I open Finder, it will open a new Finder window on that space and not take me to the space where there's an opened finder app :( |
Creating a "virtual" dir that wraps two (external) drives Posted: 26 Sep 2021 03:46 PM PDT I was wondering if MacOS Mojave (the most recent version I can be on due to some very expensive 32 bit applications) has a way to set up a "virtual" dir, or even virtual drive, that combines two or more external drives and surfaces them as if they're one directory/drive. E.g. something that lets me say "create a virtual dir/drive called When both SSD are connected, or if one of them's not connected, show or depending on which drive's still accessible. Or a flatout empty dir/drive if nothing's connected. With the explicit intent that is the SSDs that house dirs that some applications rely on, then yes: those will throw errors. That's fine, and expected. I just want something that lets me surface a ton of data spread over multiple drives as a single dir/drive when they're all connected, with each SSD being "just a drive" that can also be connected to any random other computer that knows how to read/write the SSD's filesystem. |

Launching a video via VLC directly from MacOS command line without any playlist interaction Posted: 26 Sep 2021 03:29 PM PDT I posted this originally in Super User, and it was suggested that I post this question here, instead ... I'm using I want to run VLC from the command line in order to play I know I can do the following: However, when I do so, VLC does not start playing the video. Rather, it just displays the VLC playlist GUI window with a If I add If I run under Linux, I can use VLC to view the Is there a way with the MacOS VLC program to immediately launch a video directly via the command line, without the VLC playlist GUI popping up at all? Safari 15.0 error message: "A problem repeatedly occurred:" Catalina 10.15.7 Posted: 26 Sep 2021 02:30 PM PDT I have had no problems with Safari until recently on my home Mac. The identical Mac at the office does not suffer this error messageAttempts to visit certain websites ( banks, etc.) produce the error: Home Depot: Google returns articles and videos that suggest toggling settings or clearing caches (this does not work, nor did I expect it to), however, they do not provide for diagnosing the root cause of the problem with a procedure and a "litmus test" (observable evidence confirming root cause). How to force macOS to open https://t..me/ links with correct Telegram client Posted: 26 Sep 2021 10:50 PM PDT I have 2 Telegram clients on my MacBook ^ ^ Currently when I click a link, the first one opens. How to have the second one open instead? EDIT: By removing the .app for the first one (Telegram Desktop) from my /Applications folder, links now correctly open in the second one. However as soon as I restore it, links again open in it. Even changing the filename and moving it from /Applications to ~/Desktop, macOS still manages to find it when I hit ENTER on a link in Chrome. How to prevent this behaviour? Moreover can anyone shed some light on how macOS is able to track the movement of an app to any location on my filesystem in this manner? |
Cloudflare warp de-routes 127.0.0.1 How to return it? Posted: 26 Sep 2021 09:40 PM PDT I'm a web dev and pretty regularly use localhost/127.0.0.1 As you do. The problem is recently I started getting a problem where Cloudflares warp (Its a privacy VPN of sort, with caveats) causes 127.0.01 to stop responding. Even pinging doesn't work. I've tried the route -n flush thing , thinking that maybe its done something hokey to the routing table but even with multiple consecutive runs of it (as is oft suggested) it just doesnt work, and ends up making the internet flakey. I'm at a loss. It appears to be a common problem too, I asked on reddit and with no answer there where a lot of "me toos" all noting their problems starting around the same time mine started. No answers given. The only fix is usually to resetart the machine, which is an ugly solution when you have a nest of docker containers and other things that dont like to simply shut down. Anyone encountered this and have a possible soluton? edit: For folks in a hurry, the solution from the comments is See the accepted answer for a breakdown of why this works. |
Mac OS find out what your IPV4 address is used for Posted: 26 Sep 2021 08:04 PM PDT I was looking up my some information with the command To my confusion there I had two ipv4 addresses that both look correct. At first, I thought one was for my physical line and one was for wifi. But when I connected my physical line a third one that looks similar popped up. The wifi and the physical one seems to be beginning with 192... so the odd one out is the 169.254.89.196 is there any way I can find out what this is used for? I'm running a mac on Big Sur. |
How share folder in QEMU with plan9/virtfs between MacOS host and Linux guest? Posted: 27 Sep 2021 12:34 AM PDT I am trying to run a Linux Debian with qemu with MacOS Big Sur host. Vertically accessible 3-finger multi touch windows Posted: 26 Sep 2021 02:06 PM PDT MBP 15" user - 95% trackpad - LOVE the 3-finger swipe navigation. I assume Apple limits the potential of an app like this, but maybe not. Is it possible to add vertical functionality to the 3-finger swipe? To clarify: Saying "Swipe left/right/up/down" implies the end result of the movement, not the actual direction of my fingers. Swiping right means go to the window right of my current window. Swiping down displays all your windows/desktop background. Swiping up does nothing. Really all I want, is to be able to swipe up to Spotify from any window or have a second set of windows on a level above the current, 1-dimensional horizontal window set. Made a simple mockup as to what I am describing. Is there already an app like this? Would download in a heartbeat! |

How can I best configure this hard drive? Posted: 26 Sep 2021 07:08 PM PDT I have a Mac Mini with two hard drives inside. The 1st one has an OS installed, and the files I work from. But I wanted to have the second one be used partly for storage, and partly have an OS installed in case the first HD crashes. I'm imagining that if my main drive fails one day, I will be able to keep working uninterrupted by updating drive 2 with Time Machine. However in the meanwhile, I'd like to use Drive 2 for storage (while booting from drive 1). I found this article, but it doesn't really say if this scenario would let the user use the rest of the partition for storage if the computer is booted from another drive. Does this sound like a logical plan, and how would I format and instal the second drive? |
Kernel task takes about 500% CPU after connecting external monitor Posted: 26 Sep 2021 10:04 PM PDT I work with macBook Pro (15 Inch 2019, Catalina OS). I can't work with external monitor. 3-5 minutes after pluging in I have kernel_task that takes something about 500-900% CPU. I know there are some similar topics - the main suspect is overheating in such case. I have some changes in temperature, but it's hard to say for me if temperatures are still in ok spot. I have highlighted the biggest changes. |
Entire "Users" folder is missing when booted into Recovery Mode Posted: 26 Sep 2021 05:53 PM PDT I posted this in the Apple Discussions forums, but have yet to get an answer that applies to the depth of which this situation currently exists. My Mac's hard drive (running Mojave) suffered some corruption recently, and I found myself unable to boot into the system. I am able to boot into Recovery Mode, and my intent was to rescue the important data sitting in /Users/(my username), but to my surprise, the entire /Users/ folder is just not there when I try to access it via Terminal. Steps taken:
What I have tried:
I can only come up with two possible conclusions:
In the meantime, preparing for the worst, I have ordered an external drive enclosure so that I can pull the drive out of my computer and view its contents on another computer. I am very hesitant to reinstall MacOS right now, because IF /Users/ has been compromised in the corruption, I don't want to do anything further that will prevent it from being recovered somehow. In other words, I am trying not to write any new data to the drive at all. Thanks for any help or suggestions in advance. |
Trying to set a F8 pause/play dictation command Posted: 26 Sep 2021 11:06 PM PDT So I'm what one would describe as ridiculously disabled. I've recently taken a liking to using the dictation functionality due to only having the use of one hand and often having to lie on my back. I'd like to add the F8 play/pause key to the list of dictation commands, but unfortunately the dictation custom commands don't take single keypresses. It seems the solution is to create a workflow. However, upon trying automator to record the keypress I seem to have discovered that it doesn't recognise that key for some reason. Just as a note, I use this play/pause functionality for iTunes AND Chrome Youtube videos at the same time. For example, I'll start iTunes playing, then start the Youtube video. Since the Youtube video was the last to be interacted with the play/pause affects Youtube, and not iTunes. That functionality I would like to keep if possible. So I guess if you can't just do a simple keypress it'd need to check if Youtube or iTunes is the current/last interacted with active app and act accordingly. Does anyone have a possible solution or workaround they can think of? Thank-you |
Create new Apple ID solely linked to new @icloud.com email? Posted: 26 Sep 2021 06:09 PM PDT I am attempting to create a new Apple ID for use with an Organization Apple Developer Account. It seems to want an existing email address; it's not creating a new email address for me.

How to override DNS resolver ordering while connected to L2TP VPN Posted: 26 Sep 2021 09:05 PM PDT OS: Current network setup:
Output of This works fine. I can find However, the moment I connect to a L2TP VPN, my system gets reconfigured to use the VPN DNS servers to resolve hosts on my home search domain. The scoped queries configuration looks right, though: In my Network System Preferences, I have the VPN connection last in the Service Order dialog. If I move the VPN connection to before my ethernet connection, then my local DNS server doesn't show up in the resolver list at all (while connected to the VPN): What I want:Ideally, what I'd like to see when connection to a VPN is something like: This way I could resolve all I've tried changing the order of services in the Network pref pane, changing the local domain on the DNS/DHCP server, deleting and re-creating the VPN connection, nothing has worked so far. Is this possible? Or am I misunderstanding how this all works? |

Replace Text Edit as the default text editor Posted: 26 Sep 2021 09:59 PM PDT I've seen questions like this which don't quite solve my problem. I'd like to make Sublime Text 3 the default file viewer/editor for all files that currently use textedit. Most of these files can be command+i'd, but the ones that have no extension cannot. They give all sorts of permissions errors such as the ones in this image Is there any way to just never use textedit, and instead set sublime as the default editor for all files? |
