How do I get Disk Inventory access to the entire harddrive?

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 09:09 PM PDT

Following these questions, How can I figure out what's slowly eating my HD space?

I got Disk utility diskutility

However, after downloading it and opening it with the proper privs, it can only account for less than 20% of my entire disk usage. I have a 500gb drive, but the utility only shows 80gb of usage. Where did the other 420 gb go?

In case this is important.

How can we access/utilize mac build-in save to buffer feature?

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 08:13 PM PDT

Found this open source app where it helps capture gif (https://github.com/onmyway133/GifCapture), but it lacks one super useful feature, saving the captured result to the clipboard like the one in screenshot app.

Can use have apple script to achieve the same function, saving the captured result to clipboard?

Ps: there are some more updated and similar app (even more powerful) on github but I just found this one does the job. please share if you found an gif capture app that has saving to clipboard feature. please share.

Problem with Disk Warrior, repaired Timemachine backup won't copy

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 04:39 PM PDT

I have a corrupt Timemachine backup (.sparsebundle) diskutility is unable to repair.

Diskwarrior 5.2 (on Big Sur) was able to repair the image file and I was able to access the backups directory and see the files on the mounted preview disk.

However, I am having issues copying the files. I can copy the files from the disk in the finder.app but that takes forever for the image is 600+ GB.

In Diskwarrior itself copying the backups folder to another disk is not possible. It seems there is a permissions issue (foldericon). Pressing the copy button yields nothing. Its just dont doing anything.

I tried it also on a virtualbox (macos 10.13). There were no permission issues but when I try to copy the folder, it crashes.

Diskwarrior is able to restore my timemachine backup but I cannot copy the files. Did anyone have a similar problem and was able to solve it?

Low saturation and blurred fonts when using a 60Hz adapter vs a 30Hz adapter

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 07:00 PM PDT

I have a MacBook Pro 16", 2019. I recently bought a new screen (LG 27GP950) which I connected using an HDMI cable through an HDMI -> USB-C adapter. It worked fine, but the adapter was capped to 30Hz.

I bought a new adapter that was is capped at 60Hz, but now some applications have noticeably lower contrast for text and some coloured fonts (particularly red) are very blurry. An example application is Visual Studio Code.

I've used a 4K screen at 60Hz before with this laptop (LG 27UL850 connected through USB-C) which worked fine, so I don't think the laptop is struggling to drive it.

I have tried different cables, I tried replacing the adapter too to make sure it wasn't faulty. I've also tried another 16" to check it's not the laptop. None of these things worked.

Is anyone aware of what may be causing this and how I can rectify/troubleshoot it?

Here are some examples of the same app and text but using the two different adapters:

How can I reinstall the OS on macbook pro?

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 10:10 PM PDT

My macbook pro mid 2015 with high sierra installed started to behave strangely.

I can boot and login, and after less than a minute it completely freezes with the spinning wheel. Then the wheel disappears, and then the screen goes black, not the keyboard.

Tried to reinstall going to recovery mode, but it found no disk to install the system.

Tried to reset SMC but no help

Any ideas?

mac OS/iOS FindMy URL scheme: Possible to open a specific person/device/item directly?

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 10:42 AM PDT

Using the URL schemes

  • findmy://friend or friends
  • findmy://devices
  • findmy://items

opens the FindMy.app with the respective tab.

But has anyone figured out whether it's possible to also activate/mark a specific item (say: a particular AirTag) directly in the list of items via URL scheme, something like findmy://items?MyBicycleAirTag?

Big Sur Audio keeps switching to HDP codec from AADP when input and output is being used at same time

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 11:25 AM PDT

Title: Whenever I'm say, listening to music and talking to my friends over a voice chat platform, I'm noticing sound quality for both input and output drops significantly. Upon closer inspection it seems that the codec switches from A2DP to HDP whenever the mic is active. Why is this, how can I fix it (force aptX or A2DP all the time), and as a bonus is there a way I can use aptX?

Edits for context: I am using a BT headset that sounds quite fine when I'm just listening to music but when I try to use the mic, others have a hard time hearing me and I turn off my music because of how horrible it sounds.

Why no rich results from the web are shown in Spotlight on iOS 15?

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 12:41 PM PDT

After upgrading to iOS 15 on my iPhone 12 mini, I was expecting to see rich results from the web in Spotlight, as in this example from an AppleInsider article:

iOS 15 rich web results example

However, when I search for something that I'm sure should trigger such new rich results (like the full name of a president or a celebrity, including the "William Gallagher" query from the above example), I get nothing:

Screenshot from iOS 15 without rich web results

I have the Content From Apple settings enabled for Spotlight in the Siri & Search settings, to no avail:

Siri & Search settings

Since I have Siri, the voice assistant itself, turned off, as you can see in the above screenshot, I tried turning it on, full mode, with voice activation:

Siri & Search settings with Siri voice activation enabled

That has not helped (even after a reboot).

I have also made sure that I have all Siri-related settings turned on for Safari:

Siri settings for Safari

My iPhone configuration is not really unusual or esoteric in other respects by any means, either.

It doesn't seem to be a complete failure of rich results, too, as I get those from the Contacts app, for example. It is only the web search rich results that are missing for some reason.

Hence my wondering:

  1. What could be preventing rich web results from being shown for Spotlight searches?

  2. Are there any relevant settings that might prevent them from appearing?

Take Video shortcut fails to save the video if longer than 2 minutes

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 10:01 AM PDT

I've got an issue with saving a video if the video camera is started via a shortcut. The video is saved to Photos if the video is shorter than 2 minutes, but something fails to save the video if it is more than 2 minutes long. I don't know if it fails to save due to the shortcut or the video system itself.

I created a Shortcut that uses these commands:

  1. Turn Airplane Mode On
  2. Take Video with Back Camera
  3. Save Video to Recents
  4. Turn Airplane Mode Off

I run the shortcut and and video starts, and when I stop the video by touching the red button, the video can be saved with "Use Video."

For videos shorter than ~ 2 minutes, the video saves to Photos. With a video longer than 2 minutes, the video won't save. Saving appears to work when touching "Save Video", but the error message "There was a problem running the shortcut" appears a few seconds later on the home screen, the video hasn't saved, and Airplane Mode has stayed on.

This is on an iPhone 6S with latest iOS. Any ideas?

Preventing Relocated Items shortcut after every update

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 03:35 PM PDT

The Problem

My Mac has received a new Relocated Items folder after every OS update since March 8th, 2020. This was around the time I upgraded to Big Sur I think. If I delete the shortcut, it'll just come back after the next OS update.

I have seen several threads related to this issue, but none so far have been particularly helpful in solving the actual problem.

Most threads say this can be simply deleted and ignored. However, I am getting this Relocated Items after every update, which seems unusual since I'm not modifying the files between each update. If I delete the shortcut or folders in the parent folder, they will just reappear after my next system update. So far I have had to live with the shortcut always being on my desktop, which is particularly unhelpful as I'm no longer checking it to see if anything actually important will go there, it is just taking up space. I just checked and I now have 20 "Previously Relocated Items" folders, all with the same contents.

Therefore, I'm hoping to move beyond just ignoring the files, and instead actually resolving the underlying conflict(s) to stop this file re-creation from happening.

The Relocated Items

The folder tree inside the many Relocated Items folders all contains three files under Configuration:

  • /private/etc/groups.system_default
  • /private/etc/paths.system_default
  • /private/etc/shells.system_default

Using some research from other threads, I ran a diff comparison these three files to their matching files in /etc (without .system_default). The differences vary between the files.

Groups

Unlike paths and shells, the groups.system_default doesn't have any changes that I recognize. That said, this is also seemingly the most common file found in Relocated Items. The only difference between the two groups files is that the /etc/groups file doesn't have the _trustd:*:282:_trustd line.

Will adding this line into the /etc/groups file prevent this "Relocated Item" from happening on each update, and is it safe to do this?

Paths and Shells

The paths.system_default file is the same as /etc/paths, but /etc/paths also has another directory: /Users/<username>/platform-tools. This I recognize to be the Android platform tools that I installed at one time.

Similarly, shells.system_default is missing the /usr/local/bin/bash line, but that line is still in /etc/paths. I do remember after an upgrade having to switch from zsh back to BASH, so this makes some sense.

What I don't understand is that in both of these cases, the updated files are still in their normal locations (/etc/paths and /etc/shells), but the files in Relocated Items are missing the changes that I made. My understanding of Relocated Items is that it is a backup changes I made that were replaced by macOS, but this seems to be the other way around.

What should I do in this case to prevent these two unneeded Relocated Items files? I would like to keep platform-tools in my PATH, and also to continue using BASH. Do I need to remove those changes from the /etc/paths and /etc/shells, and re-add them some other way?

No list of all open Safari windows/tabs on other devices in iOS 15.0 or Safari 15

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 03:24 PM PDT

I used to be able to access all open windows on my Mac on my iPhone (or iPad) and vice versa (via the tabs button). Unfortunately, ever since I installed Safari 15.0 on my Mac and iOS 15 (and iPad OS 15), that doesn't seem to be possible anymore.

I also made sure that Safari is on in iCloud on all my devices. Was this feature dismissed by Apple or is it a bug? Are there ways to solve this issue?

Photos: Import All New Items doesn't work

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 02:03 PM PDT

I have over 30,000 photos on my iPhone 8 Plus. Photos Library on my MacBook Pro is currently empty.

I tried to import all photos from my iPhone to the Photos app but had a lot of problems. The first few times it was stuck at around either 13,000 or 15,000 photos, now the "Import All New Items" button doesn't work at all.

I tried restarting both devices (also in safe mode), deleting the Photos Library, and creating a new one, but nothing helped.

If anyone has had a similar issue, how did you resolve it?

MacBook Pro Retina turns off during Apple logo

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 07:03 PM PDT

I have a mid-2014 15-inch MacBook Pro Retina. I was using it half an hour ago, and everything worked perfectly. I turned it off and left it for five minutes or less. I turned it back on to check something I forgot, and now it won't boot. the little progress bar underneath the Apple logo fills in much slower than normal, and the computer turns off when the progress bar is about 2/3 full.

Battery is fine. The computer was plugged in before I turned it off, so the battery is full, and it's plugged in now.

I have a Windows partition I can boot from with no problems since the Mac problem started.

Trying to start in safe mode results in either a black screen indefinitely or the computer turning off when the progress bar is maybe 1/10 full.

Trying to start in diagnostics mode results in a black screen indefinitely.

Tried resetting the system management controller. Nothing changed.

Tried resetting the PRAM. What happened is the Mac kept restarting every five seconds or so while I kept cmd+alt+P+R held down and then returned to the above problem when I let go.

If it helps, the internal SSD is a 960-GB Aura drive with two partitions: 760 GB with Catalina and 200 GB with Windows 10. It is not the internal drive that came originally with the Mac, but the replacement was made several years ago and I'd never had a problem with it before.

Bootcamp Error "WIndows cannot locate the disk and partition"

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 07:05 PM PDT

I have a Macbook Pro 13 in. 2020 on Big sur 11.5 and am trying to get bootcamp again. I previously had it up until a few days ago when I tried to increase my bootcamp storage by creating a new partition. It was 60 gb partition formatted as MS-DOS (FAT). Easy, simple right? when restarted my computer, the bootcamp hard drive was no longer accessible on the startup disk. After restarting my computer and deleting the new partition, bootcamp no longer showed up at all. At this point, I removed bootcamp entirely.

I redownloaded the Windows ISO and used the bca to go through the process. Seemed the work just fine until i recevied this error message: "Windows cannot locate the disk and partition specified in the unattended answer file's setting. Make sure the setting references a valid partition and restart the installation"

After a going through multiple different reasons I narrowed the issue down. When bca creates the BC and OSXRESERVED partition to set up windows 10, bca would put the ISO and everything it needs to run bc on the OSXRESERVED partition. I reset the PRAM and SMC mutliple times and reran BCA as well. It's been a constant cycle over the past 3 days and I would appreciate any help.

Below is my diskutil list with the bootcamp and extra partition after my last attempt.

WiFi connection on my iPad automatically gets disconnected when the screen goes off

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 03:05 PM PDT

When screen goes off on my iPad, the WiFi gets disconnected automatically. How do I keep WiFi enabled? I just noticed this problem is only when the hotspot is made by a xiaomi mobile(which makes a connected chain symbol rather than normal wifi symbol) which is the same type as the hotspot by Apple devices. This problem is not when hotspot is created by other android devices.

What is the difference in the way PageUp/Pagedown keys are handled by Terminal.app vs iTerm2.app?

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 06:04 PM PDT

I had an SOF question about the ipython REPL handling of scrolling https://stackoverflow.com/q/65385315/1056563

Cycle through ipython "history" with one keystroke per item even when multiple lines

I discovered there is a difference in how the Terminal.app handles of PageUp/PageDown:

This turns out to be specific to the macOS Terminal app handling of PageUp / PageDown. iTerm2 instead has the desired behavior of scrolling the history using those keystrokes.

What are the differences between how those keys are handled between these App's? Can the iTerm2 behavior be replicated in the Terminal.app ?

Running a cleanup of icloud desktop on load

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 01:07 PM PDT

I have the following launchd saved as an agent in: /Users/my_name/Library/LaunchAgents

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>  <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">  <plist version="1.0">      <dict>          <key>Label</key>          <string>local.desktop.cleanup</string>          <key>ProgramArguments</key>          <array>              <string>zsh</string>              <string>-c</string>              <string>/usr/local/bin/trash ~/Desktop/Screen*</string>          </array>          <key>RunAtLoad</key>          <true/>          <key>StartInterval</key>          <integer>3600</integer>          <key>StandardErrorPath</key>          <string>/tmp/local.desktop.cleanup.err</string>          <key>StandardOutPath</key>          <string>/tmp/local.desktop.cleanup.out</string>          <key>KeepAlive</key>          <dict>              <key>NetworkState</key>              <true/>          </dict>      </dict>  </plist>

It runs a very simple program that moves, instead of removes, the selected files to the bin. I've only been testing the launchd's success with RunAtLoad and I cannot get it to work. I get the following error in my log file after each time I log in:

zsh:1: no matches found: /Users/my_name/Desktop/Screen*

My Desktop is actually one of those icloud folders that I suppose MacOS just has symlinked. My theory is that maybe these files do not exist locally at the point the program is run. If this is the case, or not, I would appreciate any ideas or solutions to make this specific use case work.

N.B. You'll noticed I left KeepAlive NetworkState in to show I attempted to delay the run until the network was "alive", however, this wouldn't account for downloading any files.

How can I debug an extremely slow login?

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 09:07 PM PDT

Recently, I poured water onto the keyboard of my MacBook 2017 (4 thunderbolt), and I forced shutdown it. After letting it dry for two weeks, I opened it and everything seems to work. It also passes the Apple Hardware Test.

However, login (login window, switching user, authenticating for root permission, terminal login) is extremely slow, taking around 20 to 40 seconds. After restarting a couple of times, the behavior does not change. After reinstalling macOS 10.13.6, High Sierra, (keeping application and data), the behavior persists. After starting up in Safe Mode and restarting, the time shortened a little bit.

To verify that this is not a hardware problem, I copied the system partition to another MacBook Pro (same generation) and I can see the same behavior, suggesting that this is a software issue.

Update: On the other MacBook Pro, I run chflags -R noschg, nosappnd, nouchg, nouappnd / and boot up the machine in Safe Mode (and rebooted). The issue was gone, but only for Safe Mode. Starting again in normal boot recreates the problem, and further Safe Mode cannot correct it.

Things I have tried on my other MacBook Pro that does not work:

  • Reinstall macOS High Sierra
  • Removing caches and user added filesystems/extensions/launchdaemons/launchagents
  • Upgrade to Mojave (login for login window is extremely fast, but terminal login is still slow. Plus it deletes all the files I have in root account (downloads, desktop, documents, etc.)
  • Partial copy done by Carbon Copy Cloner from my mac because it disconnected after a certain while in Target Disk Mode. System work and login is fast. But for some reason I forget I erased the system and did a full copy again.
  • Repaired home permissions using diskutil resetUserPermissions / 501 then 502, 503, etc.
  • Repaired disk permissions using https://www.firewolf.science/2016/07/repairpermissions-v3-now-supports-repairing-permissions-on-macos-mojave/

The output of dtruss login root is here.

The output of sample login as instructed here: here The main cause is semaphore_wait_trap, but I don't know how to debug it.

How can I troubleshoot this problem?

2017 MacBook Pro starts with a question mark folder when there is less charge and when it wakes up from sleep

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 04:04 PM PDT

My 2017 MacBook Pro reboots with a question mark folder when the charge is below 50%. When I connect my charger, it starts normally. I also noticed when the Macbook goes to sleep and wakes up, it shows the same problem. Also, it becomes really hot when i use heavy software like FCP and starts hanging. I went to the Apple Store and they asked me to reinstall macOS, which didn't work. The common issue with the question mark problem is the SSD, but in my case its not the SSD. I ran a speed test and the SSD is working properly. Do any of you guys have a solution?

How to send photos from iPhone to Windows PC without cable and Internet

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 08:47 PM PDT

I am trying to send the pictures (and videos) I have to my Windows PC, but don't want to upload them to any cloud services. I cannot use USB because there is a problem with the socket. I can only charge the phone. The phone has internet connection and I can download apps.

An option is to start a server and connect via wifi, but how?

What are the free solutions for that? Or what can you suggest?

Prevent Mac to sleep when lid closed on Mojave / Catalina

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 10:38 AM PDT

So I saw a lots of old discussion on this topic, but I'm trying to find out an actual solution that still works on Mojave / Catalina, without the use of external monitor/keyboard/mouse/with power adapter.

When looking up Amphetamine, they claimed that you can only do it when the 4 criteria are met, and cannot overridden it.

Amphetamine

But on the other hands, Anti Sleep provide the feature in their pro version...

enter image description here

So, which one gets the real deal ? Is Anti Sleep lying about it or Amphetamine (and all other caffeine app on the appStore) is out of date ?

I also heard about InsomniaX and built-in caffeine but it's really not user friendly, and appear not to be supported anymore...

Hard drive full with 200GB of used space that I can't find

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 01:20 PM PDT

All of a sudden I've run out of space. On my 250GB hard drive, 236GB is used up with only 13GB free.

I used Finder to find big files. Nothing significant.

I used tools like Disk Inventory X, OmniDiskSweeper and Purple Tree, but according to them I've only used up 40GB.

So somehow 200GB is used up, but I can't see where.

Time Machine isn't running (and never has). The disk has no partitions.

Slow login and Terminal loading time in Yosemite, possibly related to open directory

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 08:02 PM PDT

I have a problem with slow login times in Yosemite. Logging in is speedy after booting, but after a while (a few days usually) it slows down and can take 20-30 seconds. The time to load a new Terminal window / tab also increases. If I reboot, the problem is fixed...for a while. I tried the answers in this question and nothing seemed to work. I ran the profiling suggested here and this part of the output looks suspicious:

But further Googling hasn't turned up anything helpful for solving the problem. Any ideas on how I can further diagnose or fix this issue?

Disable Automatic Gain control in Google Hangouts

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 10:03 AM PDT

I'm using the latest version of OSX with Google Chrome and Hangouts. I'm having trouble with the Hangout's automatic gain control, in that I don't want to use it. The gain control is too dumb to understand that we're using a table top mic and that background noise isn't relevant.

I have found guides that tell you to edit com.google.GoogleTalkPluginD.plist, and I've followed them to a T, but they haven't affected the issue. It seems that hangouts is now separated from the Google Talk Plugin. All the information related to this issue was from 2011, and hangouts have changed vastly since then.

Is there any new settings file? It seems like the only option might be an inline level mixer. Thanks!

Is there a way to generate random passwords in Safari, without iCloud?

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 02:41 PM PDT

I know that iCloud Keychain has a feature where it offers to generate strong, random passwords directly in Safari. Some third-party password managers allow it, but I'd prefer to store the password in the OS X keychain, so I'm really just looking for a password generator, not full-blown manager. For other browsers there is addons that offer similar functionality. It's possible to do it in the regular non-iCloud Keychain Access app, but this is a bit cumbersome.

Is there any way of generating a random password directly in Safari, but without using iCloud keychain?

Mavericks lock screen doesn't show screen saver

Posted: 25 Sep 2021 12:04 PM PDT

Prior to upgrading to Mavericks, when I chose to lock my MacBook Pro's screen, it would do so with my screen saver options (rotate through images in a folder, and show a clock). However, when I go to lock my screen now, it's simply a black screen.

Is there a way to make Mavericks use my screen saver settings when I choose to lock my screen as with older versions of OS X?

How can I permanently add my SSH private key to Keychain so it is automatically available to ssh?

It seems that ssh-add -K ~/.ssh/id_rsa will load your key but will ask for the password each time you reboot.

I am looking for a solution that would not require me to re-enter the key password between logins.
