How can I disable/uninstall keychain access? [closed]

Posted: 13 Sep 2021 12:05 AM PDT

I don't want to use keychain access or any password managers for that matter. This is my first mac and I am completely stumped at this supposedly simple task.

My keychain access is not linked to iCloud as in the iCloud setting it's unticked. If I delete everything inside it, the moment I log into anything it starts storing them.

Please just tell me how to stop using keychain access. How can I disable or unistall it permanently.

Edit : No I can't just ignore it as it is storing passwords without asking for permissions and blocking me out from using multiple account on same service. This is outright shady, unethical and infuriating and there seems to be no solution.

Can Mac (Big Sur) System extensions collect data?

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 07:23 PM PDT

I've been meaning to install Blackhole or Background Music or other third party audio driver in order to record audio output while screen recording through QuickTime.

What I'm not sure of is whether these third party audio drivers (system extensions) collect any data or compromise privacy in any manner?

Couldn't find any policy on their GitHub docs about the same.

Can I stop Apple News from prioritising Covid news in my newsfeed all the time?

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 07:01 PM PDT

Every single time I open Apple News, it shows Covid-related news at the top. Every single time I have to scroll past all of them to start reading topics I'm interested in.

Doesn't look like Apple News have learned anything about my newsfeed preferences after months of using it. I keep ignoring those "top news" and scrolling past them every time, and it keeps showing them to me as "top news" again and again.

Is there a way to hide covid-related topics from my personal newsfeed once and for all? It is super annoying, and seems like I can't get rid of this noise at all, which makes the News app unusable for me.

How to optimize macOS and/or Parallels for exclusively running a Windows 10 VM [closed]

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 05:47 PM PDT

I have the following MacBook Pro configuration:

  • 2019 MacBook Pro 16" running macOS Big Sur
  • 2.3 Ghz 8 Core Intel Core i9
  • 32 GB 2667 DDR4 RAM
  • AMD Radeon Pro 5500M 4GB and Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB
  • 3 external monitors:
    • 1x DP via CalDigit TS3 Plus Dock
    • 2x HDMI via USB C to HDMI cable

For reasons out of my control I cannot install Windows 10 using Boot Camp so I am running Windows 10 in a Parallels VM.

I am not doing anything or running anything else in macOS. I turn the machine on, log in to macOS, and then start the the Windows 10 VM in full screen and all monitors.

Since I am exclusively using the Windows 10 VM I want to make it as fast/smooth as possible. So far I configured my VM like so:

  • 2 processors
  • 24576 MB RAM (24 GB)
  • Adaptive Hypervisor checked
  • 512 MB Graphics
  • Resolution = Best for external displays

Is there anything else I can set/configure/do with my macOS host machine or the VM to make my Windows 10 VM experience better?

How do I prevent zsh from suspending python script

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 07:08 PM PDT

Someone once told me that zsh is just a different version of bash because of some copyright thing, so I guess I ask this question here. I have a python script that's running in a terminal and for no reason it just stops. When I interrupt it says:

zsh: suspended python myscript.py

I dont think it's my code. I think this is a "feature". How do I prevent this feature from happening?

I read this: http://technosophos.com/2012/06/20/terminal-oops-resume-stopped-process-osx-linux-or-unix.html

but as there is no prompt when the script is running I can't type fg

There's also this for bash: https://superuser.com/questions/99247/stop-a-mac-from-sleeping-while-a-bash-script-is-running-then-allow-it-to-sleep/807193#807193

Is there a python version?

How can the internal bluetooth device not be found in macOS, yet is working perfectly in bootcamp?

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 04:48 PM PDT

Bluetooth on my MacBook Pro Retina 15" decided to make itself invisible to macOS one day. I've done all the usual, deleted the various associated .plist files, reset NVRAM & SMC, reinstalled the OS yet it remains undetected. I would at this point suspect the bluetooth module to be dead and need replacing, if it weren't for the fact that it appears to be working just fine if I boot into boot camp?

Any ideas?

How do I create a good DMG image? [closed]

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 02:21 PM PDT

I'm trying to help the developers of UPBGE compile for macOS on Apple Silicon. I'm trying to create a DMG image for their release but I am running into several issues. For one thing, I want to use this background.tif file for the background. I also want to set custom icon placements for the files. However, all the relevant answers I can find on here are from 10+ years ago. How do I set a custom image and DMG window size and icon placement?

Enabling Keyboard Media Key Events on MacOS

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 01:58 PM PDT

Environment: Fresh Install of MacOS 11.1

I wanted to disable Apple Music / iTunes from responding to keyboard media keys (previous, pause, start) so I ran the following line through launchctl:

launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.rcd.plist 2> /dev/null

However, this setting is preventing ANY application from responding to media keys.

I have two questions:

  1. Is there a way to apply this selectively for iTunes / Apple Music?
  2. If not, how can I re-enable this setting (for all applications)?

So far, I have tried:

# In launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.rcd.plist # Out # Load failed: 5: Input/output error # Does the response need to be loaded onto a stream? # In launchctl start /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.rcd.plist # Out # No Change, No Errors

How to create slow frame rate video from image sequence?

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 11:13 AM PDT

I made a set of timelapse .jpg images using a Canon Rebel camera & Magic Lantern. I want to turn it into an .mp4 video.

I understand that Quicktime v10.5 can do this, but the slowest frame rate is about 24 frames per second. I want frame rates of only 6 or even 2 frames per second. I used to use Quicktime v7 but it will not run on Catalina anymore.

What Catalina software will create a 2 frames/sec video from an image sequence?

My iPhoto Library.photolibrary will not copy to iCloud, shows a cloud with a slash through it

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 11:33 AM PDT

iPhoto Library.photolibrary file is 311GB (yes I still use and love iPhoto). Size shows on Disk but where shows iCloud, yet it is not visible on iCloud via other devices and shows cloud with slash so I know it hasn't copied to iCloud. iPhoto does pull up just fine, finds the library under documents folder.

Side note, it did show ineligible for a long time (after I moved it out of pictures folder to documents folder on iCloud). Now shows the 311GB (yeah) which is how I discovered I needed more iCloud storage so did that today (2TB) and expected to see the up arrow to show it moving to iCloud but it still sits with cloud with slash. I tried to drag and drop but nothing.

My hard drive is failing and my backup is old (shame on me) so this is critical for me. I can't seem to make a copy of it where it is at to another physical hard drive either. It is almost as if it is in limbo between cloud and hard disk.

Help, I don't want to lose this file!

Will I face a problem if I have a different email ID for Android and Apple?

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 10:39 PM PDT

I forgot the answers to my Apple ID security questions, and now, I cannot get my Apple ID back. So, I decided to use a new Apple ID for my brand new, and very first, iPhone.

Will I face a problem for having a different Email ID for Android, and one for Apple? Like, any app or say where I purchased a subscription that can be shared between Android and Apple devices ?

Detect macOS beta using script

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 08:14 AM PDT

In a shell script, how can I tell whether or not the script is running on a (public) beta version of macOS?

Preferrably, I would like to check this without matching a specific version of macOS, since even though macOS 12 Monterey, is beta right now, it won't be in the future.

AppleScript - "Close tabs to right of current tab" in Google Chrome

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 09:27 PM PDT

I managed to make this script work but I think it can be improved further.

Can anyone advise me

  • How it can be refactored?
  • Why I cannot run close tabs whose id is not in closeTabList. (It will return can't make {y, x} into type specifier error)

Here's the script:

tell window 1 of application "Google Chrome" set canCloseTab to false set closeTabList to {} repeat with t in tabs if canCloseTab then set end of closeTabList to id of t else if id of t = id of the active tab then set canCloseTab to true end if end if end repeat repeat with closeTabId in closeTabList close (tabs whose id is closeTabId) end repeat end tell

I tried using this script for Safari but it doesn't work on Google Chrome because AppleScript cannot get the index of the tab

A standard method to trace and log which software creates and accesses files on my system?

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 09:55 AM PDT

Is there a way to continually trace/log which software is creating and accessing files on my system? Does this already exist?

Would this overly tax the processor?

I see a bunch of dot files and no way to know what application or installation created these files.

For instance in Application Support ~/Library/Application Support/

enter image description here

I have tried using some Terminal commands to get information: od -tx1 file strings man info

The impetus for this question is the prevalence of malware, tracking software, caches, etc. How can a regular user know the providence of the files on their system? Is the system admin term for this process called Auditing?

I am aware that many software vendors store license info inside dot files on the system.

The process com.cisco.anyconnect.macos.acsockext hogs Mac CPU but cannot be killed or stopped from launching

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 02:02 PM PDT

MacBookPro16,1 running Big Sur 11.3.1 (20E241)

This job consumes huge amounts of CPU off and on (see attached image from my Activity Monitor), often causing my laptop fans to engage to cool the processor. This is generally when the App itself (Anyconnect) is not running. The program launches automatically and relaunches every time I kill it, restart, etc. I have tried fancier things like removing the Cisco elements from launch directories etc, but it does not have any effect.

There are several discussions online about this problem, but none of the proposed solutions have helped me:

Stop Cisco AnyConnect Secure Mobility Client from starting up automatically

https://dannyda.com/2020/10/28/how-to-disable-cisco-anyconnect-secure-mobility-client-autostart-on-macos-stop-cisco-anyconnect-start-on-boot-on-macos/

I've tried all the solutions I've found online (including those in the above links), but nothing stops it. Only uninstalling AnyConnect works, but I need the Cisco VPN to work remotely with my organization.

Anyone worked this out (for real?)

How to listen to old MP3 books on iPhone?

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 11:09 AM PDT

Macbook Pro Catalina - iPhone 7+

I have many old mp3 books on old hard drives. I do not understand the modern iPhone manager. It seems completely subscription oriented.

How do I move an old fashioned mp3 file to my iPhone and listen to it, and have it remember where I left off the next day?

Trying to login to Pokémon Go with Google and I get a Error 403 code?

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 03:00 PM PDT

I set up a Pokémon Go account for my 5 year old on an old iPhone and we've been using a hotspot so he can play. I also made him his own kids email account and Google account. A few days ago the app randomly logged him out and we can't get back into his account.

At first it said that I wasn't allowed to login because I don't have permission since it's a kids account. But now it's just giving me an error message. I'm at a loss, how can we get back in?

Which tools can I use to analyze memory dumps in macOS?

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 12:00 PM PDT

I am trying to analyze memory dumps from specific processes on the MacOS. I am using commands:

lldb --attach-pid 1041 process save-core "core"

And the size of the file core is 3.3GB. With the same application process on Windows I've go 150 MB and on linux 600 MB. Makes it hard to analyze it at that size.

What are reliable tools for the analyzing mem-dumps on MacOS, regarding looking for the sensitive data?

How to use Spyder keyboard shortcuts with Mac OS

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 01:01 PM PDT

I'm using the Spyder IDE to do Python development on macOS. This IDE provides some keyboard shortcuts I'm used to from other platforms, especially

  • F9 for running a line or selection of lines of codes.
  • F5 for running an entire Python script.

Unfortunately they don't seem to work. I found a suggestion to reset the shortcuts within the application by going to Preferences -> keyboard shortcut and restore the defaults. That didn't work for me, so how can I make these shortcuts work?

tmutil setdestination permission denied

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 05:02 PM PDT

I'm trying to force TimeMachine to point to an smb location. The smb share is on a Ubuntu server and I followed this guide (mostly - it's a little outdated) to setup the smb.

However, I do not see my smb in TimeMachine, so I'm running:

sudo tmutil setdestination 'smb://myusername:mypassw0rd@myserver/timemachine'

and I'm getting back:

The operation couldn't be completed. Permission denied (error 13) The backup destination could not be set.

How do I go about troubleshooting this?

Add delay or latency to audio device

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 12:28 PM PDT

My wife is streaming a fitness class and attempting to use Bluetooth headphones to listen to music and also feed the music into the stream using Loopback. This is working well but the stream gets 0 latency on the audio and her Bluetooth headphones have noticeable latency so she ends up doing things off beat.

Using Bluetooth explorer, I've tried forcing both her MacBook (2015) and my MacBook (2019) to use AptX with 0.0 latency but there is still latency. I also tried using a Bluetooth receiver that supports AptX and plugging that into the headphone jack on her MacBook but still had out of sync audio to the headphones and the MacBook speakers.

Now I'm wondering if I can add a delay or latency just to the MacBooks speakers, not to the Bluetooth headphones. Is there a way to do this just for the one audio source?

(I'm also open to other solution to this situation in general)

Resize APFS partition in Big Sur

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 11:39 PM PDT

Like many people online, I've been having issues with resizing my APFS Partition ever since Big Sur (11.1 BETA). There was a point in time where I had 500GB of unusable free space that I couldn't allocate to my functional partition of Big Sur!

Not too long ago I installed the Mac OS Big Sur Developer Beta on my computer. It was alright – a few issues here and there, but nonetheless not bad for a beta. After Big Sur was officially released, I wanted to get out of the Beta and remain on the public version of Big Sur. Of course, that's no easy task. So what I decided to do was partition my drive (500 GB / 500 GB), install the public version of Big Sur on the new partition, and then move all my files over – It worked! Now it was time to resize the new partition after formatting the old one so that my new partition was the full 1 TB of available space – and that is where this tutorial will help. For some reason, with Big Sur, I was unable to change the size of the Partition. I tried every single command-line google had to offer – I even went as far as using Recovery to run GPT commands. The furthest I got from that was the ability to recover the "Free Space" and use the 1st partition as a drive, but it was still considered separate from my main Big Sur partition.

What do I do to retain my entire storage in 1 partition?

Facebook messenger calls, show only short name

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 10:02 PM PDT

When someone calls me on my FB messenger I can only see their short name. I noticed this change after I updated my iPhone to iOS14. Does anyone know how can I change it back? I have multiple people with the same short name and it is very difficult for me to understand who is who.

I'm positive that I configured contacts properly like this yet messenger refuses to show full names.

Keyboard shortcut for right-click in current cursor position on OS X? ('Menu Key' on Windows)

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 04:00 PM PDT

On windows computers there is often a key for this. Called the 'Menu Key' enter image description here

There is also a keyboard shortcut in windows, when the key is missing. Shift + F10

A similar request was made here but the question was not sufficiently clear and the answers provided demonstrate how to make a right-click where the mouse pointer is on the screen, which is not useful.

What we need is a shortcut to make a right-click where the cursor is on the screen. The same as the windows functionality.
