How to fix the Dock folder list view when Dock is set to auto-hide? Posted: 12 Dec 2021 03:18 AM PST I have stumbled upon an inconvenience when setting the Dock to auto-hide and using the list view for a folder on the Dock. My Applications folder is on the Dock and is set to list view, sorted by name: The list is larger than the screen, so applications starting with an The following screen recording show this behaviour.
In the left situation, the list jumps down. In the right situation the list stays in place. How can I configure my Dock such that the list does not move down when I navigate to an element higher up the list? |
Posted: 12 Dec 2021 02:10 AM PST i am having an issue with the mac ports implementation of curl. so - this shows that the mac-ports installed version (7.80.0) isn't able to connect to the server. It can connect with other servers. But the system installed version of curl (7.77.0) does connect to the server i did try to force-rebuild curl with : This error causes an issue for my development copy of apache/php and in particular the guzzle library. this was working before the update - any ideas how to fix? |
On macOS how do you make an smb volume mounted at boot Posted: 11 Dec 2021 11:55 PM PST I have a Mac running Monterey connected to a network that has a NAS (Synology, I want my Mac to mount that smb share so that I do not want this mount to lazily require a keychain UI interaction, I do not want this mount to lazily time out and is be unmounted after some time. I want this smb share to be seen as the same thing as a local disk and cause errors in the same scenario that a local disk would. Is there a way to do this? There is no I can write some apple script to "open" the smb share in Finder upon login, but this is after other stuff has run and is too late. On macOS (Montery and later) how do I automount an smb volume that is on my network at boot time and keep it mounted forever? |
Cannot proceed with Boot Camp Assistant Posted: 11 Dec 2021 11:28 PM PST Right after Internet Recovery finished installing OS X Mavericks (10.9.5) on my Late 2013 27-inch iMac, I run Boot Camp Assistant. A window pops up with this message: While I'm 100% sure about it, I run Disk Utility again and see that the entire 3TB space of my ST3000DM001 disk is allocated to a single, Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition. So I google that message and find HT209102 which tells me to:
I still see that message and can't proceed with Boot Camp. What I'm supposed to do now? |
How to export iCloud Photos without a Mac? Posted: 12 Dec 2021 12:35 AM PST how can I export iCloud Photos without a Mac? Online on iCloud.com I can only export a .jpeg and not the original file including the Live Photo. On a Mac I could export it with the Photos app but I don't have a Mac anymore. EDIT: I only want to download a subset. |
How does one build macOS software without Apple hardware? Posted: 12 Dec 2021 01:10 AM PST Do you have to buy Apple hardware to develop macOS software? I tried to find a way to run a macOS VM or cross-compile to macOS, but hit dead ends. They all seem to involve development environments that only run on macOS. Hopefully I just have terrible investigative skills. |
Sapping command and control only in iterm2 with karabiner Posted: 11 Dec 2021 10:13 PM PST So I'm new to Karabiner, and I'm trying to swap the command and control key only when I'm in iterm2. Here's the json file I came up with. Currently it swaps the control key to a command key but does not switch the command key to a control key. Thanks |
Call Forwarding with non-call-enabled sim Posted: 11 Dec 2021 09:33 PM PST Long story short: I have dual sims: one is a data only plan (i.e. it cannot receive calls, it is not connected to the phone network) and the other can receive calls. I used the data only sim for all my contacts for years (using facetime and message), and now just got the second sim, but don't want to have to transfer all my contacts over. Is there some way to forward any calls to my old number to my new, even though it cannot receive calls? I don't think the traditional call forwarding works; I get an error message of failed activation. |
How can I control my HomePod from a script on my Mac? Posted: 11 Dec 2021 09:21 PM PST I would like to at least start and stop music on my HomePod, and preferably also select what music to play, and control the volume. Is this possible? I want to use any script or app that can be controlled from (e.g.) Alfred or BetterTouchTool. I really don't care if it's a shell script, AppleScript, Javascript, or something else. But I would strongly prefer that I not have to run Music.app on my Mac to accomplish this. I find that app to be extremely heavyweight and awkward. Homepod works fine without Music.app (e.g. through the Siri interface) so why would I want Music.app running all the time as a useless intermediary? It just wastes space in my field of vision (by putting another item in the control-tab menu) and wastes resources on the computer. If at all possible, I want to control the HomePod directly from the script. |
iCloud drive not showing files and folders Posted: 11 Dec 2021 08:00 PM PST This started with my iPad and now my iPhone. iCloud drive was not syncing so I went to my iCloud settings, disabled iCloud Drive, then turned off and turned on the device, enabled it and checked the Drive - it now shows a blank screen and at the bottom says '0 items, X GB available on iCloud'. Creating a new folder just says 'waiting'. How can I fix this? |
Posted: 11 Dec 2021 06:14 PM PST I'm curious, and M1/ARM64/Apple Silicon MacBooks are incredibly efficient, so I am exploring using smaller power sources like my (genuine Apple) 10W/2.1A iPad AC charger. But I wonder: Why is it reported as supplying only 5W when powering my new M1 MacBook? Also, I have some (brand name) USB-C cables I'd like to use with it but I hear that folks have problems with non-Apple power sources (presumably eBay chabuduo 'brand') frying M1 Macs, so I'll be testing them with other USB-C equipment. |
What could be breaking Keynote Live? Posted: 11 Dec 2021 06:54 PM PST Keynote Live seems like a very useful feature. I thought I would try it out using Keynote.app in advance of a presentation in January. No matter what I do, it always tells me to wait for the Keynote to upload: However I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that this dialog box is false. I shared the presentation through iCloud with other people and they were able to download it. This proves it is ON iCloud. What could be going wrong? |
My iPhone cannot "see" all the books on my Mac via Mojave iTunes Posted: 12 Dec 2021 12:02 AM PST I have 18 books in Books.app on my Macbook Pro running Mojave. When I open iTunes and look at the Books on my phone, it shows 5 books. Changing the iTunes radiobutton from "All books" to "Selected books" lets me select among those 5. As far as I can tell, the other 13 are invisible to it. Any clues where to look, what settings to change, what to reboot (again), or whatever? Please don't tell me to upgrade my OSX, I have too much expensive 32-bit software to make that attractive. Thanks. |
Dock Dual Thunderbolt 2 Laptops with dual hdmi out / dual screen sharing? Posted: 12 Dec 2021 02:00 AM PST I have a 2013 Macbook pro and a 2015 Macbook air. The pro has a busted screen but works fine otherwise, it has two Thunderbolt 2 jacks. The air is fully functional, it has one Thunderbolt 2 jack. I like to make electronic music. I have some stuff on one Mac and some on the other. I have two displays I want to use. One is a older LG flatron with hdmi input, the other is a 4k uhd smart tv. I also own a 2tb time capsule. In my head I'm thinking of a setup with the pro kinda always docked, maybe closed if possible, and always using the two displays, and a Bluetooth keyboard and trackpad controlling it or both, then I could just add the Air to the docking station whenever I wanted to and share files, monitors. I was thinking I could use one for like VST and plug ins and the other for my DAW host software. That way I could get the most computing power possible. Not sure if that's possible. For a minute I was looking into DANTE or AVB but then that wouldn't solve my dual display needs. I thought there has to be a dock that I can hook up both laptops to via Thunderbolt 2 and share data at high speed, with 2 hdmi outputs that I can also share between the computers. But so far I'm not finding anything. All I can find are dual monitor switches for mini display or Thunderbolt 3 / USB 3.1 docks with dual display but no dual hdmi. (I don't need to power the screens with hdmi). So, I'm needing some help! I would like the added ports that a dock offers, I would like to quickly file share from laptop to laptop, and i would like to be able to, if possible, share dual external screens for editing and etc. Does anyone know how i can accomplish this? Any help is greatly appreciated! |
Mirror iPad Pro screen to my Windows 10 PC via USB Posted: 12 Dec 2021 05:01 AM PST I need to mirror my iPad screen to my windows 10 computer without wifi (via USB). Is there a modern software solution that does not involve very low framerate or high latency ? |
Convenient Way to Turn an Apple Note to EPUB Posted: 11 Dec 2021 11:03 PM PST Recently I have converted one of my iCloud notes into an EPUB by first copying and pasting its content to Pages (by parts, since the entire content was not willing to be copied for some reason), then by manually designating all the headers as Pages headers (to get the table of contents working), and then by using the Pages "Export to EPUB" option. This was a lengthy and unpleasant procedure. Is there a better way to turn a note into an EPUB? By the way, I specifically need to have all the images from the note in the resulting EPUB document. |
Find which files are shared in iCloud Drive Posted: 12 Dec 2021 04:13 AM PST This seems obvious, but can't figure it out. How can I find which files are shared to other people in iCloud drive? Finder shows individually a text under each shared file, but I would like to see a list of all shared files. See more information about file share functionality (add people) on Apple Support Pages under Share files section where it says:
If I share hundreds of files, after a while it will become hard to find and unshare files that no longer need to be shared. I'm questioning the auditability of the share functionality. |
Best app to switch between all open windows Posted: 12 Dec 2021 04:56 AM PST After 4 years of being a Mac user, there is only one thing that I still miss from the Windows world, and that is being able to switch with a single keystroke between all open windows in the computer. What is the best app or utility, free or not, for accomplishing that? I've used Witch, but I never was completely satisfied with it. It's a bit slow and the switcher UI is not very pretty. Do you know any alternative? EDIT (2016): This question keeps getting views and upvotes after 6 years. When I asked this question in 2010 I was still transitioning from being a Windows user. Eventually, I got used to Mac OS X UI and nowadays I don't use any third party utility for managing app windows, just Mission Control and the native keyboard shortcuts. So, although this question is no longer relevant for me I hope it is useful to new Mac users making the switch (Including this comment). |
