Manjaro with KDE takes a long time to wake up after sleeping Posted: 10 Oct 2021 09:59 AM PDT I've been a long time user of Cinnamon, which I always thought was super fast, but recently switched to KDE. My experience has been pretty good on all fronts, except that I've noticed my laptop takes a long time to wake up after I close the lid (which makes it go to sleep). It takes about 15 seconds, which seems like a long time compared to my previous experience with Cinnamon, where it was pretty instant. I don't know if it matters, but booting and shutting off also take long. Although the thing that bothers me specifically is the waking up after sleep. Not sure what's going on. 'I'm not sure how to interpret it, but here's a journalctl output. It seemed like a good place to start Sep 26 17:47:52 yoga6 avahi-daemon[459]: Withdrawing address record for fe80::2358:caa7:fb14:e96b on wlp2s0. I specifically need to remove the fifth character from linux filenames using 'rename' Posted: 10 Oct 2021 09:23 AM PDT I've been going round in circles! I specifically need to remove the fifth character from filenames using 'rename' in Kubuntu linux. That character appears elsewhere in the names so searching for the char will fail. I've seen the following: rename 's/-.*\././' -- *.mp3 *.mp3 But examination of the rename help file does not has s or its function described Thanks |

How to easily abort unattended-upgrades or configure it so that it gets aborted automatically once apt-get is used to upgrade? Posted: 10 Oct 2021 10:21 AM PDT On Debian11/KDE when trying to upgrade packages (and earlier sudo apt-get update as well) it displays the following error message: Cannot get the exclusive lock on the package backend. Please close any other legacy packaging tools that may be open. E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend. It is held by process {id} (unattended-upgr) W: Be aware that removing the lock file is not a solution and may break your system. E: Unable to acquire the dpkg frontend lock (/var/lib/dpkg/lock-frontend), is another process using it? In the process manager (KSysguard) the process-tree is like this: apt.systemd.dai->apt.systemd.dai->unattended-upgr->unattended-upgr->unattended-upgr When I try to "End Process" in KSysGuard it just gets restarted (and that wouldn't be the solution anyway). The process finishes after a while but there are still security updates that haven't been implemented so I'm not sure what it does / how it's useful. I also had this problem after a dist-upgrade. How to abort unattended-upgrades or configure it so that it gets aborted automatically once apt-get is used to upgrade? I think it should be as easy as possible (by default) to update packages and something blocking the update could be a problem for people who just started using GNU/Linux or aren't interested in spending time to solve this problem of updating suddenly not working for unknown reasons. Some people recommend to manually (via commands) temporarily stop (even requiring a reboot) or permanently remove the unattended-upgr package. Concerning permanently removing unattended-upgr I think that upgrading packages in the background would be useful but is unattended-upgr actually doing so? In any case if this isn't a bug or a problem of Debian's default configuration of it, it currently seems to decrease user-friendliness / convenience / UX. |
How to remap CapsLock to Esc in Vim, installed on Ubuntu (console only, no Desktop Environment)? Posted: 10 Oct 2021 08:05 AM PDT The goal is to remap CapsLock to Esc in Vim, installed on Ubuntu (console only, no Desktop Environment). This Ubuntu system is installed on Virtual Private Server. I'm logging to this server using Putty, from my home laptop with Windows 10. And everybody are talking about mapping this CapsLock key to Esc in Vim, but I was unable to find actual line, that needs 2 be written in $HOME/.vimrc file. This is what I've tried myself, but none of this works, except for the first line adding row numbers: set number inoremap <Caps> <Esc> inoremap <Caps_Lock> <Esc> inoremap <CapsLock> <Esc> The goal is to remap CapsLock to Esc only in Vim, not the whole Ubuntu server. I've checked and CapsLock works fine in Vim, and makes UpperCase when locked. I've searched so many places like: https://vim.fandom.com/wiki/Mapping_keys_in_Vim_-Tutorial(Part_1) all 3 parts of this guide and here as well. Like everything is written there: mapping "ii", "jj", "jk", "jw" different Ctrl and Shift combinations. Everything except CapsLock to Esc remap. ??? Why ??? Why is it so hard to remap CapsLock to Esc in Vim? It's almost my question, but unfortunately on Windows OS. From the comments below my question I gather that mapping CapsLock to Esc is impossible in Vim alone. I've also read this thread: How to use CapsLock instead of Escape in Vim? And the answer that's accepted states: "For remapping in the console, if your distro uses systemd , you can use a custom keyboard layout in /etc/vconsole.conf as described on the Arch Wiki." I guess Ubuntu uses systemd , so I'm ready to accept the answer that's going to map CapsLock to Esc key in whole Ubuntu installed on my VPS, providing my home, Windows machine key mappings, remain unchanged. I've run this: michal@localhost:~$ localectl status System Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8 VC Keymap: n/a X11 Layout: us X11 Model: pc105 What should I do next? I think I don't have this file /etc/vconsole.conf on my Ubuntu VPS. Should I create it myself, or should it be there by default? |

Right syntax of dictionary of key/value pairs Posted: 10 Oct 2021 09:54 AM PDT I read through the docs here and here. My goal is to configure a ip-sec VPN connection from nmcli only. I run Ubuntu 20.04 Server without X Server. I already have a connection file on another machine, so I have all the information needed: [connection] id=myVPN uuid=blabla-blabla-blabla type=vpn autoconnect=false permissions=user:mark:; [vpn] IKE DH Group=dh2 IPSec ID=myID IPSec gateway=myGateway IPSec secret-flags=1 Local Port=0 NAT Traversal Mode=natt Perfect Forward Secrecy=server Vendor=cisco Xauth password-flags=1 Xauth username=myUser ipsec-secret-type=save xauth-password-type=save service-type=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.vpnc [ipv4] dns-search= method=auto [ipv6] addr-gen-mode=stable-privacy dns-search= method=auto [proxy] Here my first try: sudo nmcli connection add connection.id myVPN connection.type vpn connection.autoconnect false connection.permissions mark vpn.data {"IKE DH Group"="dh2" "IPSec ID"="myID" "IPSec gateway"="myGateway" "IPSec secret-flags"="1" "Local Port"="0" "NAT Traversal Mode"="natt" "Perfect Forward Secrecy"="server" "Vendor"="cisco" "Xauth password-flags"="1" "Xauth username"="myUser" "ipsec-secret-type"="save" "xauth-password-type"="save" } vpn.service-type=org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.vpnc It fails with the following error: Error: invalid <setting>.<property> 'IPSec ID=myID' I understood it wants the . instead of the = to assign the key/value pairs. Here my second try: Error: failed to modify vpn.data: '{IKE DH Group.dh2' is not valid; use = Now it says the opposite: it wants the `= sign. What is the correct syntax to set those key/value pairs? |
Can git clone be used with code storage services which are not github? Posted: 10 Oct 2021 08:39 AM PDT Can git clone be used with code storage services which are not github? How to extend partition size without losing data? Posted: 10 Oct 2021 08:31 AM PDT How do I extend the size of /dev/sda5 using the unallocated space on the top? I've tried using the resize/move option directly but can't do that because the partition is mounted and it can't be unmounted since it is the only partition. I tried swap-off and then increasing the size of swap. And it didn't work either. |
DNS names on virtual machines don't work Posted: 10 Oct 2021 08:38 AM PDT I have a problem with my virtual machines: I have three machines. VM5 has connected to internet network via NAT. It can ping both 8.8.8.8 and google.com. VM1 and VM2 ping 8.8.8.8 but can't ping google.com. Is it some problem with DNS? The VM5 has POSTROUTING MASQUERADE. UPD: UPD 2: I have 2 networks: - 192.168.1.0/24 is red ellipse on the picture.
- 192.168.2.0/24 is green ellipse. VM5 has NAT to get access to Internet Network.
I use debian OS on all machines. UPD3: VM5: |
Linux: How to merge identical named folders with different case from the CLI (BASH preferred) Posted: 10 Oct 2021 07:24 AM PDT I have on my Linux NAS miscellaneous folders with identical names, except for case, like this: - /data/libraries
- /Data/libraries/presets
- /Data/Libraries/presets
- /Data/Libraries/Presets
- /merged/readme
- /merged/Readme
- /merged/ReadMe
- /merged/README
- etc.
This is ok-ish on Linux, even though not desirable, but because this is on a NAS that services Windows PCs, the client PCs get confused and only actually show the content of one of the folders, despite showing all the variations... There are so many, that I want to automate merging these folders together. What capitalization we end up with is really irrelevant, although a format of 'Capitalized First Letter Of Each Word' would be preferred, if remotely possible, the ultimate goal is to just have one of each folder name. (NOTE: I am aware that there may be conflicts in the file names contained in these folders as well, but after discussing, I'm willing to take the risk that there might be identically named files with different content, simply because currently a lot of the content isn't even readily accessible anyway!) Are there any ready-made CLI tools (or BASH scripts) to do this? |
Script doesn't work with shebang "/usr/bin/env sh", but does with "/usr/bin/env bash" though sh points to bash? Posted: 10 Oct 2021 06:53 AM PDT I have a shell script which logs the performance of various programs passed to it as arguments, to help me choose the most performant one. The relevant snippet: #!/usr/bin/env sh function cal_perf () { real_t=0 user_t=0 sys_t=0 for (( trial=1 ; trial<=$3 ; ++trial )) ; do shopt -s lastpipe /usr/bin/time -f '%e:%S:%U' $1 $2 |& IFS=":" read real sys user real_t=$(echo "$real + $real_t" | bc) user_t=$(echo "$user + $user_t" | bc) sys_t=$(echo "$sys + $sys_t" | bc) done real_t=$(echo "scale=2 ; $real_t / $3" | bc) user_t=$(echo "scale=2 ; $user_t / $3" | bc) sys_t=$(echo "scale=2 ; $sys_t / $3" | bc) printf "%s\t%d\t%.2f\t%.2f\t%.2f\n" $2 $3 $real_t $user_t $sys_t >> timings_$(date '+%Y%m%d') } # main printf "program\t#trials\treal_time_am\tuser_time_am\tsys time_am\n" > timings_$(date '+%Y%m%d') translator=$1 shift while [ $# -gt 1 ] ; do cal_perf $translator $1 ${!#} ; shift ; done It's supposed to be run on the command line as follows: perf <translator_progam> <list_of_programs_to_compare> <number_of_trials> ...for instance: suppose I want to compare the performances of xip.py, foo.py, bar.py, bas.py, qux.py --the net content of the working directory--and run them each for 50 times before generating the stats; I'd invoke the script as: perf python *py 50 I think I am missing something obvious here, but when I invoke this script as bash $HOME/bin/perf ... everything works as intended. However, the following two invocations fail (error attached): perf ... - or even placing it in the working directory and invoking as
./perf ... changing the shebang to /usr/bin/env bash solves this problem, but /usr/bin/sh points to /usr/bin/bash on my system. |

Exit sh script if condition is met Posted: 10 Oct 2021 06:52 AM PDT Maybe this is a rookie question, but I am fairly new to sh scripting and I have to wait about two hours to make sure my logic is right, so I just wanted to ask here. I have a sh-script which should get the number of lines on a specific file; the whole sh script should be exit/stopped as soon the condition is met if [wc -l "$file_data" -lt 2000]; then echo "does not meet minimum requirements" exit -1 I don't know if I should go with exit 0 or exit 1 or exit -1 ? |

Firefox seems to need “catchup time” after unlocking screen (using light-locker/lightdm) Posted: 10 Oct 2021 09:56 AM PDT (Possibly related to After unlocking light-locker, screen remains blank proportional to how long it's been locked) I've recently switched from xscreensaver to light-locker because of an annoying bug that hit me during the upgrade to xscreensaver 6.00). Am very happy with the switch except for the following issue: when I unlock back into my session, it appears that browsers were somehow suspended or maybe just lost network, because: - Electron apps show that they are reconnecting (Not really an issue)
- Firefox appears to be doing CPU intensive work for ~2 minutes (for an overnight lock) and is unusable during that time frame. I assume it's catching up with everything it missed?
The 2 minutes of inoperative Firefox are a real hassle. Things that narrow it down: - This is on a desktop box that has continuous network access. (Not a laptop that loses wifi when lid closed etc.)
- I've observed that other apps (launched from the command line prior to locking) have network access while the session is locked. (They continue serving data).
- I've sshed into the box during lock and using ps/top, I've determined that firefox wasn't "kill -STOPed"
So my best guess is that something tells browsers to discontinue their use of network while the session is locked. Any idea what that might be? Maybe something systemd related? It doesn't sound like such a terrible idea to suspend browsers while session is locked, but then is there any way to understand what Firefox is doing during these 2 minutes? (Trying to go to about:performance doesn't do anything because Firefox is just too busy to even answer that). Update (10 Oct 2021): It looks like light-locker invokes loginctl lock-session ... and I think that's what's driving the behavior of the browsers. This answer by @user1686 suggests that loginctl sends a "lock" signal to all the apps and so I guess what I need to do now is find out how Firefox responds to this and why it hangs as a result. |
How to disable Ctrl+S in terminal applications started from file manager or via shortcut? Posted: 10 Oct 2021 06:51 AM PDT I've successfully disabled Ctrl +S in terminal using instructions here. However, if I launch a terminal programs (namely terminal vim) from "outside the terminal", Ctrl +S still freezes the screen. What I mean by "outside the terminal": - Using a keyboard shortcut to run something like
kitty -e vim to open vim in terminal - Using vimserver to launch terminal vim from the file manager, which in the end pretty much does the same as above
Is there a way around this? (Other than unlearning the habit of constantly saving with Ctrl +S ;) (There are reasons I cannot and don't want to use gVim. Running stty -ixon from inside vim doesn't work, and I'm sure there are good reasons why not – I'm not really familiar with stty yet...) |

11. However, when I try to add another condition with an if statement (only substitute if the line contains "MNO" string) the script still substitutes all occurrences after line 5. How to transfer Windows 10 and Linux Ubuntu to SSD Posted: 10 Oct 2021 09:04 AM PDT I have a Windows 10 and Linux Ubuntu PC Layout over 2 HDDs as below: HDD 0 = 30Gb / 7.5Gb / 154Gb Linux Partitions, plus 740Gb Vol K Windows 10 BU/data. HDD 1 = 20Gb Recovery Z / 249GB (135 used) Windows 10 C: / 100Mb BDEdrive / 660GB Windows data files. I am not too sure what the Z: and BDEDrive actually do in this set up ( I have another very similar Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro upgraded PC and these drives are not present but 100Mb System Reserved and 450Mb Recovery are!! The Windows 10 C: drive is a wholly owned Win 7 Pro free upgraded to Windows 10 Pro and contains a number of applications including Adobe CS Master Suite which I would rather not reinstall. The data files are all in volume K and BU's etc on volume J:so C: is purely OS/Applications equalling 135Mb. The Linux install currently has no valuable data or apps installed. I wish to move Windows and probably Linux to a Crucial 275Mb SSD. I have already secured the Windows 10 using Macrium. Plan overview - (gleaned in my ignorance by checking a mix of web sources). My Questions are at steps 5, 6 and 8. but any other advice is welcome Create bootable USB with media creation tool. Reboot from USB. Run bootrec.exe /fixmbr Restart without USB to go straight into Windows. Delete Linux??. Do I simply unallocate the Linux partitions - I do want to reinstall Linux later. Clone Windows C: drive to 200Gb of SSD, leaving 500Mb of the remainder for a system reserved need (is that sensible? but if so how do I apply it?). Do I also need to clone the Z: and BDEDrive? Any Recovery files can go onto an HDD. Once all running OK I then hope to reinstall Ubuntu Linux with the Linux data partition on an HDD. Do I do this using about 35Gb of the SSD leaving a small reserve on the SSD for Win 10 O/S extension / usage? Or simply put it all on an HDD? |

But I really don't know what to do. |
Wifi with WPA2-EAP MS-CHAPv2 authentication (username and password) during Debian installation Posted: 10 Oct 2021 10:07 AM PDT I am currently attempting to install Debian on my laptop computer. During the network configuration stage, I am prompted to "enter a passphrase for WPA/WPA2 PSK authentication". Unfortunately, I am on my school's network which requires both a username and a password, with the MS-CHAPv2 authentication protocol. What should I enter at the prompt? I have an Ubuntu computer which can connect to this network. Here are the contents of /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/NetworkName : [ipv6] method=auto [connection] id=NetworkName uuid=3e728a68-a877-4681-bc0e-1e64b2ff6434 type=802-11-wireless [802-11-wireless-security] key-mgmt=wpa-eap auth-alg=open [802-11-wireless] ssid=NetworkName mode=infrastructure mac-address=84:A6:C8:A9:67:DA security=802-11-wireless-security [802-1x] eap=ttls; identity=username phase2-auth=mschapv2 password-flags=1 [ipv4] method=auto Curiously enough, the password I enter to connect to NetworkName doesn't appear anywhere. How can you get ping to print human readable timestamps? Posted: 10 Oct 2021 10:25 AM PDT Ping can print you a timestamp on every line but its in unix date format :( ping -D localhost PING localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1) 56(84) bytes of data. [1415629479.482938] 64 bytes from localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.057 ms I'm looking for a simple pipe command that can convert them on the fly to something like this: [Sat 14 Feb 2009 01:31:30 SAST] 64 bytes from localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1): icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.057 ms Also I want it to run continuously, it shouldn't wait for the command to terminate before printing results. |
Debian Kde Iceweasel/Firefox: setting custom protocols handlers Posted: 10 Oct 2021 07:01 AM PDT I recently switched from Ubuntu 10.04 gnome to Debian wheezy Kde. Everything's work fine, except to the Iceweasel/firefox custom protocols! I added komodo.protocol in my ~/.kde/share/services with: [Protocol] exec=python /path/to/my/script.py "%u" protocol=komodo input=none output=none helper=true listing= reading=false writing=false makedir=false deleting=false This works for chrom(e|ium), but not for firefox. I've read about firefox should use the gnome configs even under Kde, so I tried: gconftool-2 -s /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/komodo/enabled --type Boolean true gconftool-2 -s /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/komodo/command 'python /path/to/my/script.py %s' --type String that used to work when I was on ubuntu, but it doesn't on kde. Any idea? EDIT An example link: komodo:/var/www/app/0/Modules/Controller/Node/Controller_Node.class.php:1202 And if I run the command komodo /var/www/app/0/Modules/Controller/Node/Controller_Node.class.php:1202 from the terminal it works correctly; my python script simply check few things and then runs this command - but with firefox/iceweasel it never gets triggered. |
