GNU Emacs on Big Sur acting as if Control, Option keys sticky Posted: 02 May 2022 01:37 PM PDT I'm a longtime GNU Emacs and macOS (and GNU Emacs on macOS) user, on a US Gov't owned MacBook Pro (16-inch, 2019) running macOS 11.6.3 (Big Sur). For the last few weeks, GUI versions of Emacs are acting as if the Control or Meta key was being held down for a few seconds after it was released. Needless to say, this makes editing particularly painful. This has happened with both the MacPorts and emacsformacosx dot com builds of Emacs 28.1, and with older Emacsen running in Linux virtual machines! Emacs running in the macOS Terminal app is not affected. The problem does not affect other Mac apps, unless I am switching context from Emacs to some other app. Does this sound familiar to anyone? How can I chase down the cause of this problem? |
What is the process to replace a hard drive in a Mac Mini? Posted: 02 May 2022 11:58 AM PDT I have a 2011 Mac Mini whose hard drive I would like to upgrade, because it's a bit small, old and slow. I got a 2TB SSD drive and would love to clone my current HD that has my OS on it and everything onto it, then swap them. I looked around online but I'd rather ask here since the Mac Mini is a bit old. What is the exact process to do that? Will the data cable in the Mac Mini be fast enough or do I need to replace them as well? Can I do the copy with Disk Utility? |
iPhone tracked but cannot play any sound Posted: 02 May 2022 10:56 AM PDT I dropped my iPhone 11 yesterday. Unfortunately, the person who found it decided not to give it back to me. I am trying to make my phone ring by playing a sound on Find My. I pressed the button 15 minutes ago and the sound was "pending" waiting for the iPhone to be connected to the internet. The sound is still pending even though the iPhone was active 5 minutes ago. How is it possible ? I am pretty sure the sound was not played as I didn't get any mail. |
Is there a command that I can run in Mac terminal to allow notifications for a specific app? Posted: 02 May 2022 09:46 AM PDT Is there a command that I can run in Mac terminal to allow notifications for a specific app? For example, I am trying to allow notifications for both Podcasts and Stocks but I do not see those apps in the list in System Preferences > Notifications & Focus (screenshot below). I ran those 2 apps multiple times and was not asked to enable notifications for them yet. I am using a 2021 Macbook Pro M1 Max with macOS Monterey. My goal is to see those 2 apps in the list and have the ability turn on notifications for them. |
Debug MacOS optimized battery charging Posted: 02 May 2022 08:04 AM PDT I have an issue with the optimized battery charging in MacOS. Namely: Around two months ago, while travelling, I anticipated I would need 100% of my battery and requested my Macbook charge to 100% via the "Charge to Full Now" option in the battery menu bar. Ever since, across multiple chargers, I have not seen it fall back to 80% anymore, and it spends the vast majority of its time plugged in. Is there a way to debug this feature, so I can get an idea what's wrong? Or perhaps reset its state completely? |
Macbook Pro with ATI damaged - Recover installed windows and external monitor Posted: 02 May 2022 07:36 AM PDT I have a late 2011 Macbook Pro, which recently damaged the on board ATI graphics, and I'm currently trying to recover everything I have installed to a manageable state so I can carry on my work until I can replace it. I have installed Windows 10, in legacy BIOS mode to be able to use it's hardware properly (well, the ATI gfx card at least), and OSX High Sierra in the same SSD drive on two separate partitions in a non GPT disk, in order to have Windows 10 legacy bios install. I also have an external SSD on USB where I have a linux installed that I use quite often. I managed to disable the discrete graphics on OSX and Linux, and have them use the Intel only, but, I failed doing so in Windows 10. After painfully being able to boot in safe mode, I disabled the ATI hardware in device manager, but still, when booting into windows it crashes, any idea what I should do besides disabling the hardware and uninstalling the drivers (which I also did) ? Also, I read in several places that by disabling the discrete graphics card (ATI) I wouldn't be able to use an external monitor (through it's thunderbolt port to hdmi/dvI/vga adapter) but windows 10 only showed up in the external monitor before I disabled the graphics card, and on safe mode, never could switch it to the laptop monitor, only when I disabled the ATI, it crashes on the main laptop monitor, but, safe mode still uses only the external monitor, does this mean that there is still a possibility of using and external monitor and the internal laptop monitor when the ATI card is disabled ? Thanks for the help. |
How to clone SSD with 2 systems (Mac and Win10) to larger SSD with increasing Windows volume? Posted: 02 May 2022 11:13 AM PDT Some years before, I created both a system SSD disk with Windows (Bootcamp) and macOS (Macintosh HD). After that, I forgot about the way how I did it and now I need to migrate from the old disk to the new. I have a Samsung SSD (256GB) disk with macOS and Windows 10 onboard (128 on macOS and 128 on Windows 10). I want to transfer all systems from Samsung to a new Gigabyte (480GB) disk. And I want to increase the Windows space. So, the result I'm waiting for should look like that - (macOS 128GB, Windows 10 352 GB). I'm using AOMEI Backupper Professional on a different Windows PC. But when I copy the whole Samsung to Gigabyte in one try, increase Windows size, macOS becomes ready to use, but Windows system doesn't (in Mac Disk Utility I still see both values, but Windows value is not acceptable in [alt] boot mode). How can I clone my working windows 10 too? (I don't use Bootcamp assistant to clear installation of Windows because I lose audio connection in Windows after Bootcamp assistant installation). P.S. I hope there is a f2p decision because don't want to pay 50$ for WinClone utility for macOS, which I'm not 100% sure works ._. |
"Now Playing" icon will not go away in Monterey Posted: 02 May 2022 07:13 AM PDT This image says it all. As you can see, I have turned off Now Playing's "Show in Menu Bar", but it's still there. Yes, I have closed and opened the control panel, clicked various controls in an attempt to "save" the setting, and so forth. I have also tried command-dragging the icon out, which works for about 0.1 seconds and then it reappears at a new location (the one seen here, it was previously further right). Any suggestions? |
automount is broken after upgrading MacOS Monterey Posted: 02 May 2022 09:28 AM PDT I'm having issues with automount with my NFS shares after upgrading to MacOS Monterey 12.3.1. /etc/auto_master: /etc/auto_mounts Any ideas? Linker command failed (clang-13) Posted: 02 May 2022 11:59 AM PDT I'm installing this software for my research, but I'm getting this macOS-related error (macOS Monterey 12.3.1) and I'm not quite sure if it is something I can handle myself or if I should contact the support team: It's mostly tcl code with some c++ and I'm not sure how to decompose this error to dig deeper at a quick fix. Any suggestions? |
How to *permanently* set OSX to the default boot drive when using a Bootcamp partition? Posted: 02 May 2022 09:00 AM PDT I have Windows installed in Bootcamp, I use it like 2-3 times/month to play some games. The other 95% of the time I'm using OSX. However, every single time I boot into Windows it resets the startup disk to Bootcamp. I then reset it to OSX when I'm back in OSX, but it's getting annoying. Is there any way to prevent windows from resetting it all the time? I've tried setting the default boot drive from within Windows, but Windows doesn't see the OSX partition, so I can't. |
How to disable autocorrect for correctly spelled words? Posted: 02 May 2022 07:04 AM PDT Is there a way to stop autocorrect from altering words that I spell correctly? While still keeping autocorrect on for incorrectly spelled words. I have tried turning off Autocorrect in Settings > General > Keyboards; but this disables autocorrect completely. The words still pop up above the keyboard but it no longer autocorrects just by typing. It can be quite frustrating to have iOS randomly change your sentence to something that doesn't make sense because it thinks the grammar might be wrong or it's trying to second guess what you're typing, when I've typed something completely valid. Adding endless lists of words that iOS constantly wants to "correct" into the Keyboard Text Replacement option is not a solution in my opinion. The list of correctly spelled words that iOS likes to alter is vast. Also I already use the Keyboard Text Replacement feature extensively so I don't want my own list polluting with this nonsense. Surely there is a way to not autocorrect correctly spelled words? If not is there any app or Shortcut that bypasses this somehow? Some examples off the top of my head, but there's plenty more stupid stuff it does:
(it thinks I mean a person called Will)
(who knows!)
(a city near London)
(✅ vs 🎟)
(Totally wrong) Is it "learning" these somehow? It seems to go through phases of changing certain words for a while until I correct it enough times. Here are some different examples. I have 2 keyboards installed - English and Dutch. With the English keyboard selected, it does this: (meaning "I" in Dutch)
(meaning "that" in Dutch)
(meaning "huh?" in Dutch) I must say, since switching from Android to iOS, I prefer it; but the keyboard is absolutely awful in comparison! |
Fix/restore "Print to PDF" to preset location in Big Sur Posted: 02 May 2022 08:01 AM PDT Recently updated to Big Sur. Previously in Catalina (and prior) I was able to open a print dialog box, select the PDF drop down and choose a preset folder I had saved (Dropbox/Receipts folder) where macOS would then generate a PDF of whatever I was trying to print and drop it into that folder.
I've read some stuff about PDF Services changing in Big Sur but no conclusive answer how to bring back this essential function where I can print anything to PDF to a preset folder with like 3 clicks. |
Posted: 02 May 2022 11:05 AM PDT I use localhost to develop Wordpress websites locally but since upgrading to BigSur, I cannot get localhost to show my local websites. My set up is MacBook Pro with Big Sur v11.4. I use MAMP software v6.3 for my local server environment I have tried to open local websites on Safari 14.1.1 and Chrome Version 91.0.4472.101 There's been brief intermittent success in an incognito Chrome Window and in Safari when I first tried to use localhost:8888 but that was only when I was able to use http and not https (when unsuccessful it redirects to https: and fails). With MAMP running... When I type 'localhost' in either browser - I get "it works!" 'https://localhost:8888' returns On Chrome: "This site can't provide a secure connection localhost sent an invalid response. ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR" On Safari: "Safari can't open the page "https://localhost:8888" because Safari can't establish a secure connection to the server localhost" I try to type in http only but it always redirects to https: in both browsers When I use an incognito window in Safari - the website displays as expected but In Chrome incognito - it returns "This site can't provide a secure connection localhost sent an invalid response. ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR" It seems like it's https: causing a problem but I don't know if that's a correct assumption or how to fix it. Can anyone help to identify the problem and how to fix please as it's really impacting my ability to work. I have asked Apple for support but as it's not clear where the issue lies they haven't really taken this on as their problem. |
Very slow time machine backup to NAS (small files?) Posted: 02 May 2022 09:29 AM PDT [Nb. more-or-less identical question posted to ServerFault.] I am backing up my 2019 15" MacBook Pro to a Synology DS416 NAS. The NAS is wired to my NetGear Orbi router, correctly showing 1000 Mbps, Full duplex, MTU 1500, formatted as ext4 with SHR (Synology Hybrid Raid). The MBP is connected by wifi (I don't think that is the bottleneck but it is actually difficult to check because of the physical setup of my network). Time Machine backups are extremely slow — many hours at best even for just a few GB, and almost always with a long time after the backup has actually reached its nominal 100% mark where the prefpane just shows a slowly-increasing amount backed up. Sometimes the full backup ends up taking days. After examining speeds with TheTimeMachineMechanic, I think this might have to do with small-file performance of copying to the NAS: speeds drop precipitously when dealing with many small files. I can't seem to do anything to fix it. I have tried the I have had this setup for a while — originally with a very old Apple Time Capsule, and for a while with a combination of the Time Capsule and the Synology, but now just the Synology; originally with AFP and now with SMB; originally with a different router. I don't think it has always been this slow (although, on the other hand, AFP would fail catastrophically every few months and force me to restart backups from scratch, so this is an improvement over that). Also, FWIW, backups are not encrypted since I've been doing this since before that was an option, although I know I probably should... (I assume that wouldn't increase the speed?!) Any ideas, or at least others with similar issues? Update (~two years later): soon after this question, I gave up and just started using an attached disk (a bit of a pain on a laptop that is frequently attached and detached from power, and which uses a monitor which can supposedly act as a usb hub put in practice that doesn't work with hard drives — but all this is a separate issue!). But a while later, after a couple of macOS and Synology upgrades, I decided to start again — from scratch — on the NAS. And whadya know? It worked! Backups are fast and efficient, not much slower than the usb-attached disk. I don't know if this is due to macOS, Synology's DSM (which did have some significant SMB upgrades), or if it's just that my previous Time Machine backups had got into a bad/buggy state. I'm curious, but not complaining (and trying not to be superstitious about jinxing it!). |
How to upgrade Homebrew itself (not softwares/formulas installed by it) on macOS? Posted: 02 May 2022 07:53 AM PDT I have homebrew installed long before the OS is upgraded a few times to 10.12.3. Now that How to properly upgrade to newer version, say 1.1? didn't work. |
Messages not delivered. No "send as text" option Posted: 02 May 2022 11:57 AM PDT I am not able to send or receive messages on iphone. I get "not delivered" then "try again" but no option to "send as text". Worked fine until two days ago. MMS and SMS are on. |
Equivalent of cmd+down in Numbers Posted: 02 May 2022 11:54 AM PDT This is the key combination I would use in MS Excel to jump to the last contiguous cell in the current column. Similarly, cmd+shift+down would perform the same jump while selecting all the cells along the way. Is there any way to do the same on Numbers through the keyboard? I am on a MacBook and don't have a numeric keypad on the extreme right of my keyboard. P.S. Please DO NOT suggest links. I need a solution that works. So please be sure you have SUCCESSFULLY tried it YOURSELF before you post a solution here. The following link, by the way, is full of anomalies and discrepancies and obviously didn't help: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14849?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US As an illustration of this source' unreliability, check out this example:
Two different functions for the same key combination? Not very reliable, is it? |
